A Plymouth-based commercial insurance broker, having recently celebrated its first anniversary, have moved to larger premises to cope with an ever-expanding client portfolio and a tripling of staff numbers since opening their doors 12 months ago.

artners&, whose ethos is to work in partnership with clients to help them understand the insurance they have and why they have it, has grown from two members of staff to six and have moved into their larger Riverford House offices. The team is putting their success down to a town hungry for sound advice and personal service in the commercial insurance, and particularly the cyber security risk and protection market. Client Partner Darren Butcher said, ‘We’ve been delighted with the welcome we’ve had from businesses in Plymouth and it has been our pleasure to bring the Partners& style of advice-led insurance to the town. The clue is in our name, Partners&; we very much see our clients as partners and go to great lengths to get to know them and the sectors they work in, to ensure we offer them the very best advice available. Businesses in 2021 don’t want the cheapest deal, if they did they’d go straight to the internet. Today they want the best advice that they can rely on, to protect their business, and we’re here to offer it.’

Phishing attacks remain one of the most common methods of penetration; once inside a system a hacker can redirect emails, divert invoice payments and steal confidential data, generally without being detected for many weeks. Robust, bespoke cyber insurance is essential to ensure protection against potentially catastrophic losses.’

Partners& leads the way in Cyber Security In response to the exponential increase in cyber attacks, Partners& has launched a comprehensive cyber risk management offering in collaboration with some of the UK’s leading cyber experts including CFC underwriting, CPP Group and Mitigate Cyber. The advice led insurance adviser believes that in these times of remote working, connected devices and smart gadgets, the risk of cyber-attack is on the rise and here to stay. In the UK this year alone, almost half of businesses (46%) and a quarter of charities reported having a cyber security breach. (www.gov.uk)

Jack Bellingham Considered to be the most recommended company in the South West, GASJACK Plumbing and Heating Ltd. puts the relationship of their customers at the top, together with the welfare of the team. By creating a tight-knit, professional unit that enjoys the work they do and truly care is noticed and greatly appreciated by their customers who never have a bad word to say about them. Maintaining a good reputation is something owner and founder, Jack Bellingham feels very strongly towards and can only be reached by making sure all aspects of his business are running smoothly and of the highest standard.

G

ASJACK was founded by Jack in 2014 as soon as Jack became fully qualified in plumbing and heating. He split ways with his previous employer, became self-employed and ventured into London with his van. After a few months of doing various jobs in London, he decided that he needed to return to Plymouth in order that he could be with his wife and watch his children grow up.

mind into the world of business and taught him everything he needed to know. Whilst learning about business, he was also learning more about the trade by working with Plymouth Community Homes and specialising in boilers and heating. After the threeyear contract was up, he took to social media and put GASJACK Plumbing and Heating Ltd. on the map. The more he promoted GASJACK, the busier it became until he was faced with a tough choice, to either keep fighting professionally as a boxer or continue to grow his own business. As much as Jack would have liked to have done both, he realised very quickly that there were not enough hours in the day and he felt the safer option for his children was to grow his business. Although it was the safer option, it wasn’t necessarily the easier option however, Jack has never looked back since.

Jack started boxing when he was 14 and eventually progressed to a professional level where he obtained a record of 4-0 before deciding to pursue his business aspirations full time. At the time, Jack was coaching a young man whose father was a very clever businessman. He invited Jack to work alongside him once he had proved himself worthy by installing a central heating system. Impressed by Jack’s hard work, he offered him a three-year contract and promised to enlighten Jack’s

GASJACK deals with everything plumbing and heating related but they specialise in boiler repairs, installations and heating.

Their services include • Boiler Installation • Renewables • Heating installations • Plumbing services • Bathrooms • Commercial • New build installations • Wet rooms GASJACK has a close-knit team of 5; Lee, Sam, Jack himself, Maria and Chloe. Lee is known in the team as the “guru in boiler repairs”, he has so much knowledge in the industry and believes that every boiler can be fixed, it just depends if the owner works it out to make financial sense. Sam is a thirdyear apprentice trained in installations and will soon be qualified in both installations and repairs. Jack primarily does installations and has trained Sam through his three years as an apprentice within the company. Maria works in the office, organising the team, fetching quotes over the phone and booking jobs. Chloe, Jack’s wife helps with the admin as and when she can and pops in with their two children once in a while. The small, yet organised team means that Jack can trust everybody to maintain the highest standard of work in any job they do. Since last year, they were a

team of 12 however, the pandemic made it clear to Jack that it doesn’t matter how big your team is, it’s all about maintaining a good standard of work and ensuring a healthy work-life balance. Last year, Jack was working tirelessly, managing the whole team whilst booking in jobs and completing a lot of the jobs himself. He found himself struggling to balance family life at the same time as maintaining their reputation therefore he stripped the company down to 5 team members and hired Maria to take care of the admin. Because of this change in dynamic, they are now the most recommended company in the South West. Since he made the decision to scale down his company, GASJACK has been able to identify his favoured clientele to be domestic customers. Jack finds the best thing about his job is to see the joy on the homeowners face as they appreciate the before and after results and how much it means to them. It’s also very satisfying for Jack to see the transformation after he and the team has completed the job. Jack added, “It’s always nice to have a cup of tea and have a chat with the customer too!” The relationship between the team and the customers are always positive and can be seen by the many exceptional testimonials on their website and social media. They like to go above and beyond to satisfy the customer and will follow the job through to the end to ensure they are happy. They even like to leave personalised ‘GASJACK Plumbing and Heating Ltd’

hand towels or bathmats for the customers as a thank you! GASJACK’s quotes are always honest and fair, and the service that comes with it is exceptional. They will reach out to anywhere in the South West. The team are well presented with GASJACK uniforms and are always prompt, they get the work done with no hassle and leave the customers happy at the end of the day. Jack has been known to have helped out the community free of charge for example, in the winter of 2020, a local NHS nurse had no hot water and couldn’t afford a new boiler at the time, so Jack personally bought and fitted her with a brand-new boiler. After that, other companies followed suit as they saw the growth that GASJACK had benefited from the good deed however, Jack never helped the lady for the recognition. GASJACK is trying to change the way people see the trades industry as he feels it can be very ruthless . GASJACK are simply honest people who genuinely care about their customers and the community. They also sponsor local football teams and boxers to give back to the community. Jack believes very strongly that if you give then you will receive. Not only are they thinking about the community but also the planet. As we know, gas isn’t very sustainable however, GASJACK are eager to make their company more environmentally aware and are excited about the positive changes within the industry. Renewable energy sources are becoming

01752 659458 info@gasjack.co.uk www.gasjack.co.uk 10

vastly more popular and readily available on the market and GASJACK offer a range of renewable alternatives. When the technology has progressed, Jack will make the switch and hopes to rebrand the name, swap to electric vans and offer more renewable products. We asked Jack where he’d like to see the business in 5 years and he replied with “Honestly, I’m happy with where the company is. Of course, I want it to grow but I’d like to do it slowly to be able to keep the team organised and the customers happy.” The team at GASJACK Plumbing and Heating Ltd. truly care about their clients and will always strive to impress them with the finished results. The changes that Jack has made to the company in the past year has changed the way they think about business by always putting their relationship with the customers first. To book one of their services you can give the office a call or email them and Maria will book you in - See details below.

SUICIDE PREVENTION DAY 2021 World Suicide Prevention Day is taking place on Friday 10th September 2021.

S

uicide is a terrible waste of human potential. It is a tragedy that a person cannot see his or her own worth as a person. It is heartbreaking that someone is unable to see their value to humanity. Every day, in Britain, a man takes his own life every two hours. For women it’s every six hours. And although these numbers have gone down slightly in recent years, they are still far too high. It seems likely that, following the pandemic and the inevitable changes that will follow it, they will only get higher. In every war since Vietnam, the death toll from suicide has exceeded the death toll from violence in the conflict. Throughout the world today, in spite of the dreadful conflicts which we see on the news screens every night, men under 50 are more likely to die from suicide than from violent action or warfare. In University counselling services across the UK, two thirds of the clients are women. And yet we have seen that men are in most danger of suicide.

Trying to find an identity is very tough in the 21st century. Women are leaving behind a subservient, “less than”, place in society and are moving on to something different. It can be a struggle to work out who they are going to be, once the old models of mother and housewife are put to one side. On the other hand, men find themselves with an old-fashioned view of a tough guy who is in charge, which is completely out of date in modern society. As a psychotherapist, I am used to seeing despair, and listening to people who struggle to see their own value and don’t want to experience another day. In spite of this, they find the courage to go on and to make a better life for themselves. It seems as if, once people have made the decision to talk to someone, they will find a way to go on and even to build a life that they can enjoy. The challenge is to start talking. Veterans groups can be a real help in this area. They enable men who have absorbed a traditional “man up and be a man” philosophy to talk to people like themselves. Men like this are not very likely to see a counsellor or psychotherapist. Many people, especially young people under 30, seem to communicate endlessly, facilitated by their ever-present phones. However, face-to-face communication with a physical human being is what we have evolved to need. Digital communication has been around for less than human lifetime, whereas we have evolved as people with other people around us, in small connected groups, over hundreds of thousands of years. In a strange way, it may be that

14

Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk

the move towards online video counselling, which now makes up all my practice, may in fact be more accessible to younger people than traditional face-toface work. Counsellors and psychotherapists are trained to listen quietly and intently, without breaking in with their own views or issues. Therapy is a safe space to talk, however hard it might be for you. Free of the constant bombardment of digital information, the space to just talk is calming and healing. It enables you to gain a real sense of what is going on for you when you can speak it out clearly and with help from an expert to unravel your thought processes. Good talking takes good listening. If you are in trouble and you need to talk, talk to someone, even if you can’t see the way out. Call the Samaritans, talk to that one best friend, or ask to talk to a therapist. If you feel someone you know is in despair then give him or her the space to talk. Don’t try to fix anything, just listen with all your heart and soul. This is what does

the trick. Any good therapist will tell you, that when all else fails you just shut up and listen. Good listening helps everyone to feel better about themselves, and can sometimes save a life. Alan Chatting is a Psychotherapist and Coach, and is the author of Evolution and You, and Raised by a Narcissist, both available on Amazon. You can contact him on 07753 693704, ajchatting@gmail. com, or via his website, https://alanchatting.com

LAST-MINUTE LOCAL GETAWAYS & DAYS OUT Summer is almost over which means now is the perfect time to plan some last-minute fun days out & getaways! We can’t think of a better part of the country to explore than the beautiful South West.

S

pending some quality time with family and loved ones doesn’t have to cost the earth. Staying in the UK and exploring all that we have to offer is already cheaper than going abroad and the Covid guidelines are making abroad holidays all the more difficult to go on which means staycations have boomed. A lot of holiday homes and hotels are already booked up until 2022, a record for the accommodation industry but it has meant that a lot of people have missed out on them this summer. It is always a good idea to keep checking back on your favourite accommodation websites as they are constantly adding more listings by the day. Plymouth is located in one of the best parts of the UK, with Dartmoor to the North, Salcombe & the South Hams to the East and Cornwall to the West. It is the ideal base to set off on an adventure from, even if just for the day!

River Dart Country Park Nestled in the trees, located just off the A38 past Buckfastleigh, lies the River Dart Country Park. A haven for adventure enthusiasts, thrill seekers and keen campers. Voted one of the best visitor attractions in Devon, River Dart Country park is set in 90 acres of parkland within the Dartmoor National Park and offers a whole host of activities for the whole family to enjoy. Some of their family-friendly activities include an agility trail, bike trail, mini zip wire, obstacle course, toddlers beach & playground and a pirate ship! They also have a ‘Dare Devils’ section which includes canoeing, high ropes course, kayaking, mega zip wire, climbing and caving! Their climbing and caving activities are brand new for 2021. As if it couldn’t get any better, they also offer onsite camping for all customers! They provide electric and non-electric pitches with modern and well-equipped amenity blocks complete with free hot water and showers. There are covered washing up areas, water and rubbish points, laundry rooms, Wi-Fi areas as well as an onsite tennis court! To find out more information or to book your next getaway, head to www.riverdart.co.uk

Backpack Camping in Dartmoor To really explore Dartmoor, there is no better way to do it than to hike all day and then wild camp under the stars all night. Camping in Dartmoor is actually encouraged; however, they have some rules you will need to stick to.

20

Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk

• Check the Dartmoor camping map before setting off as some places are restricted from wild camping • Only stay a maximum of 1 or 2 nights • Must be part of a hike • Small tents only • No large groups • Make sure you pitch up far away from any public footpaths and attractions • No open fires or BBQ’s • Leave nothing behind • Avoid disturbing wildlife and don’t pollute streams or rivers Wild camping is a very basic overnight stay so if you are wanting a few more luxuries and facilities, then we’d recommend you use one of the many campsites on Dartmoor instead! However, with limited signal, light pollution and noise pollution, there is no better place to truly escape into the wilderness than our next-door neighbour, Dartmoor National Park.

Plymouth Boat Trips No car? Fear not for we have Plymouth Boat Trips to help you out! Set sail from one of their ports located on the Barbican or the Royal William Yard and enjoy a gentle cruise over to Mount Edgcumbe Country Park or Cawsand Bay. Mount Edgcumbe Country Park offers gorgeous views of the coastline as you wander around the grounds of the estate. You can also step foot inside the grade II listed house and explore the history for only £8 for adults and £4 for children! Cawsand Bay is a calm, sheltered bay that overlooks the Plymouth Sound. There are only a handful of pubs and restaurants within Cawsand including The Bay, Bar and Restaurant which is perfectly located opposite the beach with endless views of the coastline. The sheltered bay offers a great place to learn how to paddleboard with Cawsand Water Sports providing paddleboard & kayak hire!

Dartmoor Zoo A 15-minute drive North of Plymouth is home to Dartmoor Zoo, nestled within 33 acres of woodland. From tigers and cheetahs to snakes and stick insects, there is bound to be something for the whole family to

enjoy! Along with 150+ animals to admire, there are also wonderful views of Dartmoor National Park, openfronted cat enclosures for perfect viewing, a gift shop and a selection of restaurants and cafes. For only £14.95pp for adults and £10.95pp for children, book your visit today a www.dartmoorzoo.org.uk

South West Coast Path If you fancy a picturesque walk, we are blessed to be located along the South West Coast Path, England’s longest waymarked footpath stretching for 630 miles. This means you can pick up the path at any point along the coast and carry on walking until you’re ready to turn back around or make a loop. Explore more of the coast path along Plymouth’s seafront or, take the hour and a half drive down to the quaint seaside town of Fowey and explore the traditional Cornish streets and shops. Fowey is located around 20 minutes from The Eden Project and 40 minutes from The Lost Gardens of Heligan which makes it a great base to explore more of what Cornwall has to offer. Due to the beautiful nature of Fowey, accommodation isn’t cheap, however, if you take a 15-minute drive out

of Fowey and head to the East Crinnis Holiday Park where there is a variety of glamping and camping facilities and pitches from as little as £38 (for a nonelectric grass pitch for two nights).

Lost Gardens of Heligan A gentle meander around the Lost Gardens of Heligan will instantly help you to relax and unwind. With 200 acres of lush foliage, exotic plantings, winding brooks and tunnels of bamboo, get lost within a tropical paradise. The elegant gardens were home to the Tremayne family for more than 400 years until the First World War where Heligan House was used as a Convalescence Hospital for Officers in 1916. Later in 1939, American troops used Heligan House as a base and the gardens were left to overgrow for years. It wasn’t until 1990 where a secret door was discovered within the bushes by Tim Smit and John Willis, a Tremayne descendant, and the sleeping beauty was re-awakened. It has now become Europe’s largest garden restoration project! To explore a genuine secret garden, head to www. heligan.com to book tickets.

The Eden Project An hour’s drive into Cornwall and you will end up inside the tropical bubble that is The Eden Project. What was a clay mine with no soil or plants has been transformed over the years into a picturesque global garden, fit for a great family day out! Immerse yourself in the world’s largest indoor rainforest and travel through differing terrain and climates. Uncover places to play like their massive Minibeast Mansion or take the wobbly footbridge through the tree canopy. To find out more about our very own tropical rainforest in the UK, head to www.edenproject.com

RECYCLE WEEK 2021 20th - 26th September ‘It’s the one week of the year where retailers, brands, waste management companies, trade associations, governments and the media come together to achieve one goal: to galvanise the public into recycling more of the right things, more often’ – www.wrap.org.uk This year’s theme: Step it up this Recycle Week.

S

omething that we can all do to help the current state of the environment is by correctly recycling our waste. Encouraging people to recycle was the first step, now we need to step up our recycling habits to ensure we are throwing the right things in the right bins.

Manufacturing recycled products still requires energy to do so, however, it is considerably less compared to generating brand new products from raw materials. In fact, producing recycled aluminium uses 95% less energy than making it from scratch and making recycled paper uses 40% less energy than making it from virgin wood fibres!

The core reason why we recycle materials is to reduce the need to grow, harvest or extract new materials from the Earth. Avoiding the harmful disruption to our planet means that fewer forests will be cut down, fewer animals will be harmed or moved and there will be less pollution of water, soil and air.

It’s not just cardboard, plastic and aluminium that can be recycled but food waste and garden waste too! These should be recycled in separate bins and can be used to generate valuable compost for food and crop growth.

The Earth only has a finite amount of resources therefore, we should be protecting them by reusing what we already have instead of searching for untouched raw materials.

You can order your black garden waste bin from www. plymouth.gov.uk and it will be dropped off outside your house. The collection for garden waste varies as they prioritise the green and brown bins first. Unfortunately, Plymouth doesn’t offer food waste bins but that doesn’t mean you can’t still do your bit! Plymouth City Council has teamed up with www. getcomposting.com to provide us Plymouth residence with our very own composting bin at a reduced cost. Made from 100% recycled plastic, their composting bins offer a sustainable solution to food waste for as little as £22.50! Compost can take between six months to two years to reach its maturity and will resemble crumbly, dark brown soil. This is then perfect for improving vegetables and flowers and can be spread lightly over the grass to help it grow.

24

What can’t be recycled? What we think can be recycled is probably very different to what can be recycled. A common mindset is, the more we recycle, the better for the environment, which is all well and good until we start recycling the wrong things. Here is a list of items from www.ecoscraps.com that are commonly mistaken to be recyclable Loose Plastic Bags • Plastic shopping bags • Plastic stretch wrap Polystyrene Foam Cups or Containers • Egg cartons • Take out containers • Drinking cups Soiled Food Items (Items that have touched food, grease or oil) • Food soiled containers • Soiled paper products

A common mistake people make is misunderstanding the terms biodegradable and compostable. Biodegradable items can break down within the environment, however, the material itself may not be good for the environment. Some plastic bags are capable of biodegrading into tiny pieces within 20 years which causes more environmental concern. Compostable items are made from natural materials which can completely break down into compost rich in nutrients. Since they cannot be recycled, the only advantage they have over regular takeaway coffee cups is that they break down slightly faster. Therefore, the only way to get around the takeaway coffee cup debate is to buy a reusable coffee cup as they are purpose-built to not be tossed in the bin. Thankfully, none of the waste from Devon ends up in landfill sites, so what we need to be focusing on is helping our local waste centres by recycling correctly and purchasing fewer single-use items, to begin with.

Other • Broken or sharp glass • Fast-food packaging • Plastic Utensils • Most receipts The perfect item to be recycled should be sparkling clean and then it can be processed back into exactly the material it was before. There is no direct rule in how clean it should be to get recycled; they will often judge the item individually and make a decision there and then. The dirtier items will be produced into less highquality materials. So, when it doubt, wash it out!

Compostable coffee cups - Good or bad? A single-use item being replaced with another singleuse item is sadly not a solution. Although they may advertise the cup as being ‘Compostable’ it doesn’t mean you can add this to your compost heap or put it in your garden waste bin. The ‘compostable’ coffee cup will decompose at a rate much slower than the contents of your compost which makes them unfit for compost heaps.

Moving House? Here are the keys to success… • New research highlights that one in ten UK adults (11%), intend to spend money on moving home over the next year. • This is despite the recent boom as the stamp duty holiday deadline approaches in September, where many have already upped sticks. • The sudden influx of house movers has led to reputable removal companies being inundated, alongside ‘cowboy’ removing firms.

O

ver a million¹ homes were sold in the UK last year during the Coronavirus crisis, yet the housing market has remained robust despite the significant challenges thrown at it. The race for space is continuing in 2021 and with the stamp duty holiday tapering off until the end of September, a new study* from the Furniture & Home Improvement Ombudsman (FHIO) reveals that 11% of UK adults still plan to spend money on moving house over the next 12 months, despite the financial incentive of the stamp duty holiday coming to an end.

illustrated below. This is in stark contrast to the East of England and the West Midlands (5%). Case files at the Ombudsman all form part of the unique insight into things that go wrong, which result in disputes involving removal companies when transporting your most prized possessions. For those planning to move home in the future, below are some top tips and points of note when hiring a removal firm. • Pre-Contract: When looking at removal companies, check that they’re able to offer alternative dispute resolution to customers if things go wrong. This might be via membership of a trade body such as the British Association of Removers (BAR) and Association of Independent Movers (AIM) or individual membership of the Ombudsman. This is an important safeguard which will enable you to have your claims independently reviewed in the event of a dispute.

Furthermore, a staggering one in five (21%) of 25 – 34-year old’s plan to spend their hard-earned cash on relocating over the same timeframe. Wales is the region in which most adults plan to invest on upping sticks over the next year (18%), followed closely by London (17%) and the South West (16%) as

At the Ombudsman, this is free to consumers and provides a decision that is binding on the business if it is accepted by them. Of course, you always retain your rights to go to court. • The Contract: When agreeing to a contract for removals services, it’s important to carefully check the terms and conditions, making note of any express terms such as the price and date, along with any standard provisions (for example what happens if they need to cancel). Terms need to be fair to both parties and should be set out in a way which is clear so that you can understand their practical significance, so don’t be afraid to ask for clarity before you sign-up to them. • What if things change? If circumstances suddenly change and you need to alter the terms that you’ve agreed to, make sure you notify the trader straight away and agree any differences in writing. This may amount to a contract variation so it is very important that all parties understand the changes and what they mean in practice for the way in which the services will be provided. • Understanding your responsibilities: Even though the contract is for the trader to provide services, there are certain obligations that fall on you and it’s important that these are understood. For example, you’ll have to pay an agreed price at a specified time and may have to pack certain belongings in a specific

way. There may even be some goods that can’t be transported by the removal company and you’ll need to know what happens if this is the case. Following the move, one of your main responsibilities will be to check goods and report damage/breakages etc. within a certain timeframe. It’s very important that consumers understand their obligations and seek extensions (in writing), if they cannot meet the deadline. • What happens if things go wrong? Traders have to deliver services with reasonable care and skill and, when providing information, this is on the basis that it will be binding where a consumer relies on it. There may be insurance implications for damaged or missing goods and this should be understood at the outset. In general, we advise home movers to: • report any issues promptly; • give the removal company the chance to put things right; • keep a written record, photographs and as much other evidence as possible. Kevin Grix, CEO and Chief Ombudsman, Furniture and Home Improvement Ombudsman said, “Our homes are our most valuable possessions and using property packing and removal companies that are part of a trade body or members of our voluntary, not-for-profit and government approved Ombudsman scheme provides consumers with additional peace of mind. Our research indicates that an estimated 5.8 million adults plan to spend money on moving house over the coming year, and we’re here to support businesses and their customers in finding solutions when disputes occur without having to use the courts which can be costly and time-consuming.” To find out more, visit www.fhio.org.
