Editor’s Note ... Happy New Year! I hope you have all had a wonderful holiday full of celebrations, spending time with your loved ones and indulging in delicious seasonal foods. It may seem hard to believe, but some of the most important and influential figures in the history of Great Britain came from Devon. They have all left their giant marks on the pages of history and their influences can be seen not only in Devon, but all over the world. Page 8 takes an in-depth look at three of the biggest historical figures from Devon and discovers what made them such important figures in the history of our county. Plympton-based personal trainer Emma Corry gives her expert advice on how to beat your New Year’s resolution fitness fails; read her exclusive double-page spread on page 34. I hope you enjoy all the issues of the Plympton Community Magazine over the coming year, packed full - as always - of unmissable features and offers. See you next month! Harriet McClure - Editor

DIAL A CAB
33-33-33
Onward and upward for new local Taxi comapany merger!
In July 2015 Plymcabs joined forces with one of the largest operators in Plymouth, Crownhill Taxi Services Ltd. Crownhill Taxis established itself in the 1950’s and has been operated by Andy Wheeler and family since 1994 under the name Dial A Cab 33-33-33. The reason behind this merger was due to the overall running costs in sustaining a small local office with minimal driver coverage. The group now boasts over 106 drivers giving the firm the man power it needed while still maintaining strong local client values. New owner Andy Wheeler said “It’s been one of the best businesses decisions I’ve ever made, the company is growing stronger every day, we have still kept the existing management team and we have still kept the same client values that Plymcabs have always been known for”. The company is one of the largest suppliers of contract work to Plymouth City Council and all the drivers have enhanced DBS checks. In addition to
PLYMCABS 18
this the company also operate a fleet of executive hire Mercedes and executive people carriers for airport runs or special occasions, as well as specialists disabled vehicles. Previous owner of Plymcabs Cliff said” I’m very pleased with this merger, the company can now move forward and upward as I’ve always wanted it to including the ability to now be able to take Debit and Credit card payments in all the cars, the company is still locally focused with the back up and support of a larger fleet”. Despite certain rumours Plymcabs categorically state that the number 77-77-77 will not be ceasing operations and will still continue to be the main number to call for any booking along with the additional Dial A Cab number of 33-33-33.

Slovenian Visitors Explore UK Engineering Training Skills Group played host to a party of Slovenian engineers at their engineering training centre in Langage month, as part of a visit organised by Tellus College. Skills Group is a Plymouth-based apprenticeship training provider, and works with a number of top local employers to support the development of apprentices in a number of sectors. Last year Skills Group refurbished its engineering and automotive facilities with new industry-standard equipment. Visiting Engineering Lecturer, Aleksander Vrščaj, said: “It is very interesting to see how other countries approach their vocational training. The facilities at Skills Group are very impressive, and it is good to hear that engineering employers still value the toolmaking skills that underpin the different specialist areas.” The apprentices trained by Skills Group spend one day each week at the training centre working alongside specialist trainers in either engineering (maintenance, mechanical manufacturing, operations, fabrication and welding) or automotive (vehicle maintenance, repair, body repair and body paint). Skills Group also offer learn2work, a preapprenticeship programme designed to provide an overview of the many career opportunities within the sector and prepare young people for an apprenticeship or employment. Tellus College has arranged the Slovenians’ visit as part of a fact-finding trip to explore how engineering and automotive training is delivered in the UK. They intend to bring over a group of Slovenian students to the West Country next year to participate in training and work placements with top local engineering companies. 24
James Gilbert, Skills Group’s Engineering Training Coordinator, said: “It’s always a pleasure to show off the Skills Group facilities, especially as we have recently invested in refurbishing the workshops.” Nikki Foster, a Tellus College Work Placement Officer, said: “This group of Slovenian lecturers were keen to find out about engineering training in the UK as they are aiming to send their students on work placements under the EU’s Erasmus+ scheme next year. We are confident that the visit to the Skills Group facility has demonstrated that Tellus College can offer the students an enjoyable and valuable experience in Plymouth.” Skills Group provides apprenticeship training for business administration, care and early years, construction, engineering and automotive, hairdressing, sport and leisure, and teaching and education. The provider currently has over 180 vacancies across Devon and Cornwall, which can be seen on its dedicated recruitment website, www. apprenticeships4me.com.

Anne Shears Solicitor - does somebody always Divorce need to take the blame? By Anne Shears Could a change in the law provide a “no fault” divorce and give separating couples a less acrimonious way to divorce, asks Anne Shears of The Family Law Company. The No Fault Divorce Bill has reached its second reading in the House of Commons. The Bill seeks “to make provision for the dissolution of a marriage, or a civil partnership when each party has separately made a declaration that the marriage or civil partnership has irretrievably broken down without a requirement by either party to satisfy the Court of any other facts; and for connected purposes”. Essentially, MP Richard Bacon, who introduced this Bill to Parliament, wants to make an amendment to family law that allows couples to say there is no element of fault in their breakup and that they have, for example, simply grown apart. Currently, a divorce in England and Wales requires the Court to be convinced that the marriage has broken down irretrievably. The divorce petition can be based on one of the following five reasons; 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
the Respondent’s adultery the Respondent’s unreasonable behaviour the Respondent’s desertion the parties have lived separately for more than two years and the Respondent consents to a divorce the parties have lived separately in excess of five years.
With three of these five facts the Respondent is formally blamed for the breakdown of the marriage. The fourth reason is currently the ‘friendliest’ way of bringing about divorce proceedings, but of course can cause delay in the divorce process for two years following the separation. For some couples this presents no issue, but for many it is quite important (perhaps for financial reasons) that they conclude their divorce proceedings as quickly as they can. It can also be crucial for emotional reasons to close that chapter of their lives. Separating couples are sometimes in a position where neither feels that they have behaved unreasonably and
adultery is not relevant. Under the current legislation, a couple in this situation has to wait two years from the date of their separation to divorce. If they want to be divorced sooner, they are in a very difficult position – in effect, one of them will have to agree to take the blame to enable them to get divorced more quickly. Family lawyers can assist the Petitioner with making any allegations of behaviour within a petition as mild as possible, but the petition also needs to be strong enough to enable the divorce to go through. It is common for tempers and patience to be stretched during a breakup and subsequent divorce, and one less source of dispute between the parties would be a positive step. The proposal in the Bill does mean that the process of the divorce itself may take a little longer. It is currently possible, subject to both parties completing the necessary documents as quickly as they can, for a divorce to go through in six to seven months. The Bill proposes that a longer period of time may well be required, possibly a year. The suggestion is that this will give individuals more time to reflect on whether divorce is really what they want for themselves and indeed any children of the family. In my view, in practice this will give parties who are sure they wish to separate time to attempt to reach agreement about dividing their finances and putting in place arrangements for spending time with their children. Once all matters are resolved, these agreements can be tied up with the conclusion of divorce proceedings conducted without paperwork suggesting that either party was more at fault in the breakdown of the marriage than the other. The idea of a “no fault” divorce is not a new one – it inevitably attracts criticism that it will make divorce easier. However, “no fault” divorce may conversely be seen as supporting a dignified end to a marriage and enabling the most positive ongoing relationship between the parties, especially where children are involved. History Runs Deep in Devon SIR FRANCIS DRAKE (1540
TO
1596)
Drake was born in Tavistock and is perhaps the most famous person from the Plymouth area. A hero to the British and a villain to the Spanish, Drake was instrumental in the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588. Drake was also the second ever person to circumnavigate the world from 1577 – 1580. On this expedition, he discovered Elizabeth Island, one of England’s first discoveries in the New World, and later Nova Albion or “New Britain”. Legend has it that upon being warned of the approach of the Armada in 1588, Drake was playing bowls on Plymouth Hoe and decided not to finish his game as he believed that he had plenty of time to finish and still defeat the Armada. Upon his death, Drake was buried at sea in a lead coffin which has still not been found by divers. Drake’s influence in Plymouth can be seen in the naming of several locations in Plymouth such as H.M.S. Drake, Drake Circus, and Drake’s Island. ROBERT FALCON SCOTT 1868 1912)
TO
Scott was born in Plymouth and was famous for the fact his name is almost synonymous with Antarctica based on his two expeditions to the Antarctic and their tragic ending. The first expedition, the “Discovery Expedition”, from 1901 – 1904 resulted in Scott becoming the first person to discover the Polar Plateau which is the area containing the South Pole. Following the success of his first expedition, Scott planned for a second expedition to be the first to reach the South Pole. In addition to the exploration objective, the “Terra Nova Expedition” from 1910 – 1913 was also a scientific expedition. During their voyage, Scott and his team discovered fossils which proved that Antarctica was once forested and joined to other continents, supporting the new claim that the Earth was once one super-continent which gradually split into the seven we now know. Scott and his team reached the South Pole on 17th 30
January 1912 only to discover that they had lost out to the Norwegians, mainly due to the fact that they utilised dogs who were more accustomed to the harsh environments than the British horses were. On the return journey, a lack of supplies, lack of will, and severe exhaustion led to the unfortunate death of Scott and his men. DAME AGATHA CHRISTIE (1890 TO
1976)
Christie was born in Torquay and is the bestselling novelist of all time, boasting the third most publications of any author’s works as well as being the most translated individual author. Often referred to as the “Queen of Crime”, Christie published 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections including such notable works as “Murder on the Orient Express” and “Death on the Nile”. She is also responsible for creating the iconic detective characters Hercule Poirot and Jane Marple. Her play “The Mousetrap” holds the record for the longest initial run on the West End starting in November 1952 and it is still running with over 25,000 performances to date. Agatha Christie remains one of the most influential authors of all time and she is considered a master of suspense.

Gluten-Free Griddle Pan Waffles Ingredients • • • • • • • • • •
Serves 6
65g unsalted butter 2 large free-range eggs 300ml semi-skimmed milk 225g gluten-free plain flour 2 teaspoons gluten-free baking powder 1/4 teaspoon sea salt ground cinnamon 2 Braeburn apples low-fat natural yoghurt, to serve maple syrup, to serve
Method
1. Melt the butter in a small pan over a low heat, then leave to cool. Meanwhile, crack the eggs into a bowl, then whisk the milk to combine. Sift the flour, baking powder, salt and 3/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, whisk until fully combined, then stir in most of the cooled butter. Remove the apple stalks, then grate the apples (core and all). Fold 2/3 of the apple into the mixture. 2. Place a high-sided griddle pan (rougly 25x30cm) over a high heat and brush with the remaining melted butter. Pour in the batter, tilting the pan so the batter spreads out evenly. Reduce the heat to a medium-low and cook for around 6 minutes, or until lightly golden underneath. Carefully flip it over (this can be tricky, but be bold and go for it!) then continue cooking for around 6 minutes, or until golden, crisp and cooked through.
Recipe: jamieoliver.com
3. Slice into 6 pieces, then serve with natural yoghurt, the remaining grated apple, a drizzle of maple syrup and a dusting of cinnamon. They’re also delicious with fried bacon, eggs and maple syrup - give it a go when you’re feeling extra indulgent.

Beating the New Year’s Fitness Fails Achieve your fitness and health goals in the New Year with Plympton-based Personal Trainer Emma
A
s we make our way into the brand new year most people will start to make a list of all the New Year’s resolutions they would like to achieve in 2016. A recent Nielsen survey has shown that a staggering 37% of people list getting fit and healthy as their number 1 resolution followed by 32% wanting to lose weight. So by 2017 we should all be fit and healthy right...not according to research by the University of Scranton which suggests that just 8% of us will achieve our New Year’s goals! So with 92% of us set to fail, how can we avoid the mistakes we made last year and finally achieve that healthy lifestyle.
Be Realistic - Create Attainable Goals One of the biggest mistakes that most people make is setting an unattainable goal. Think realistically, are you really going to drop a stone in January or get up at 6am and go to the gym every day? Set a goal you know that YOU can achieve whilst still living your life and hold yourself accountable for what you want to change. “One of the biggest mistakes that most people make is setting an unattainable goal”
Take Baby Steps – Set Up Mini Goals 34
Change one small thing at a time – try setting yourself mini goals throughout the year that will help to achieve your main goal. If you’ve not run before and you’re planning on running a marathon then it would be a great idea to start by training for a 10K. Creating mini goals will help reaching your final goal a much more attainable task.
Plan Ahead - Be Prepared “Fail to prepare, prepare to fail”. One of the biggest reasons for people failing to hit their goals is a lack of planning. If you know that the staff canteen holds treats you can’t say no too, or you know that you’ll be working late and won’t want to cook when you get home, get in to the habit of preparing your weekly meals at the weekend. By preparing healthy meals ahead of time you are less likely to reach for that biscuit or chocolate bar. Top tip – make extra meals and freeze them this way you’ll always have a back up meal!

Ask For Help Friends, family, colleagues and professionals can all help you – tell them exactly what you're trying to achieve and ask them for their support. You are more likely to go for a run or attend a spinning class if your friends come along to encourage you. If you know that you won’t push yourself in the gym then think about hiring a professional trainer, they can help you achieve your goals quicker and most offer discounts for block bookings.
Use Failure – Everyone Slips Up If you slip and break your resolution, please don’t despair! Learn from the setback: what made you slip? How can you avoid it next time? What can I learn from it? Don't obsess over a small setback, eating one pizza or having one glass of wine will not undo all your hard work.
success doesn’t happen overnight nor does it come to those who give up so make sure you allow yourself the time to successfully achieve your goals without putting too much stress on yourself. Stick to it and after a couple of weeks, the small changes you've made will become a habit and part of your new happy and healthy routine.
GIVE THE GIFT OF HEALTH THIS CHRISTMAS...
Don’t allow your one slip up to ruin your goal! Remember every day is a new start and it’s only a failure if you give up!
Measure Your Successes – Keep A Journal To help you stay motivated and to measure how far you've come each week, track your progress and keep a journal so you can make a note of all of your successes; this could be an extra mile on your run, an extra rep on your set or even that you said no to your favourite doughnut. Every success is a step closer to achieving your goal. This will help you realise how each small change can make a big difference and show you just how far you’ve come.
