Funeral Planning... D
ying is expensive. Currently the average cost of dying stands at about £3,400 and is estimated to rise to approximately £8,500 in the next 8 years, leading to a dramatic increase in the number of people taking out funeral plans. Taking out a Funeral Plan means family won’t be burdened with trying to find this money, especially as these costs will usually need to be paid long before the estate is released. Additionally, pre-planning a funeral ensures that you get the funeral you, whilst making an already difficult time simpler and less stressful for bereaved loved ones.

Ivybridge Dental Team unveil sparkling new Practice The dental team from Highland 7 Day Dental Care in Ivybridge have unveiled a sparkling new practice in a quest to expand their existing services.
T
he practice, previously based on Highland Street, has relocated to the other side of the town to Cornwood Road, just off the A38. The new practice not only offers comfortable and spacious new patient facilities, but also includes five new, state-of-the-art surgeries. Principal dentist at the practice, John Gittins, said: “We’re very excited about the modern facilities that we can now offer at the new practice, and we can’t wait to share these with our patients. We’re also hoping to welcome some new patients to the practice, and are happy to give them a tour and speak to them about the
way we work before they make a decision about joining us. “Relocating the business has been a great investment for our patients and we look forward to the benefits it will bring them,” he added. “The extra surgeries will cut waiting times and provide a wider choice of appointment slots. We can also offer our patients disabled access and convenient parking to make their visit as easy as possible. We are also now open 7 days a week and offer early morning and late evening appointments for your convenience”. Highland 7 Day Dental Care will also be offering new patients a free consultation worth £49 until 30th June to celebrate their move

Our Charity Shops - The Real Deal
C
harity Shops have been receiving a fair bit of undeserved flack recently. Often, it seems, when they’re helping to plug some massive gaps in flagging High Streets around the country. While many empty shops display colourful window posters to camouflage their empty innards, charity shops are quietly slogging away, providing a real service to the community. Although we like Woodside shops to look clean and tidy, we don’t spend large amounts on our interiors. Frequently, models, units and fittings are recycled from other business refits or closures, and hangars and carrier bags are supplied by our lovely customers. In most cases, it’s only where Health & Safety enters the arena do we buy in. This is usually for carpets (old can be trip hazards) and of course plumbing and electricity etc that must be dealt with by qualified persons. Because we open in premises that don’t have worryingly high rents, space is at a premium and storage is limited. This means that our prices are kept very reasonable, which makes us popular. If we were more expensive, stock would move at a much slower pace and inevitably build up to an unacceptable level, putting staff and customers at risk.
“They also provide Woodside with a high profile and offer local people (and their dogs) a warm welcome and a place to find a good buy” Despite how vital they are to our financial stability, it would be foolish to believe that our shops are purely sources of income. They also provide Woodside with a high profile and offer local people (and their dogs) a warm welcome 12
and a place to find a good buy. £1 Neutering savings stamps can be bought in all of them. They recycle unwanted items and, even unsaleable textiles are sold to the ‘rag man’ for salvage. Used stamps make us money too.

St Mary’s is open to everyone this summer!
P
eople passing through Plympton over the past year may have noticed that St Mary’s Church, which has recently celebrated its 700th Anniversary, has been undergoing extensive renovation. This has been necessary to ensure that the building is kept in good order and handed down for the benefit of future generations, hopefully for many centuries to come. Thanks to the outstanding dedication and hard work of our forefathers from many generations over the last 700 years, we have been left with a truly wonderful church standing at the heart of the Plympton community, a joy to behold and deeply loved by everyone who enters her gates. For members of the St Mary’s community, our wonderful church is greatly cherished and respected. However, we do not want to keep this historic building to ourselves and we would like everybody who shares our admiration for our “mini cathedral”, as it has been called, to be able to come in and look around this summer. It is our aim to ensure that the church is made open to the public for a couple of hours on as many weekdays as possible, from the beginning of May until the end of September. We want to give a warm welcome to all those people, living locally or visiting Plympton on holiday, who have an interest in historic buildings like St Mary’s Church, or just wish to enter the church for quiet sanctuary and prayer. The awful acts of vandalism and theft that we have
suffered in recent times has demonstrated why churches like ours cannot be left permanently open in this day and age, when a tiny minority of outsiders can no longer be trusted to treat property in a reasonable manner. In order to enable St Mary’s Church to be open, we have a dedicated group of volunteers who give up a couple of hours of their time once a month by “guarding” the building while the doors are open. They also act as guides for people who want to know more about the building and its memorials and artifacts. The normal opening times are from 2pm to 4pm on Mondays and Tuesdays and from 10 am until Noon on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. However, these times may vary and sadly we do not have sufficient volunteers to allow the church to be open on every weekday throughout the summer. An updated notice will be placed on the South Door (the one on the right on entering the church from Market Road), indicating all the open days and times during the current month. It is our fervent wish that we shall have a steady flow of visitors this summer, all of whom will be made very welcome. More information may be found on the church website www.plymptonchurch.co.uk or from the Church Watch Co-ordinator, Rodger Ruse telephone 01752 510190.

The distribution of Plympton Community Magazine has never been beaten by any other local competitor! We have a dedicated marketing distribution company who deliver The Plympton Community Magazine through Plympton household letter box’s. The business was started by two companies who found it difficult to find reliable and economical distributors in the Plymouth and surrounding areas. Our distributors are respectful of occupants wishes at all times and they will never deliver material where the householder/business owner has requested us not to, we always ensure that all material is delivered into the letterbox and pushed through for security purposes. Our distributers use Full GPS tracking systems through mobile phones, this is a very unique system which enables us to view every step on every path, through every street, on every road and down every lane! This form of guaranteed tracking can also tell us how many distributers are working and how fast they are walking, this is then followed by spot checking to ensure they carry out the work as required to meet our very high standards. The Plympton Community Magazine is the original magazine which has been providing local information and great discounts to the people of Plympton for over 3 years. For the past 12 months we have chosen to use this new age form of distribution to ensure Plympton Magazine is delivered on time, every time, with a guaranteed tracked distribution!

F
ollowing a long and arduous training season Ridgeway Ten Tors Teams have once again triumphed over the elements with all three teams finishing within the two day window. Headteacher John Didymus commented: “This is a magnificent achievement for our teams who had to face some of the worse first day weather I have ever seen during the event. The gale force winds and driving rain set our teams a tremendous challenge. Ten Tors is all about preparation, team work and resilience. Each of our teams demonstrated just what can be achieved with the right mindset” Mr Didymus also lavished praise on his adult trainers: “Without a group of dedicated and

experienced volunteer trainers prepared to give up weeks of their own time, over many months none of this would be possible. We work closely with Devonport High School for Girls to train over sixty students every year for this event and many more for the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. We are immensely grateful for this support”. If you would like to have your School News published, please send press releases to lucy@oracle.uk.net
