the Hidden beaches of Devon and cornwall
By Nimra Imran
N
estled underneath tall cliffs, and in hidden coves there are miles and miles of sandy white beaches waiting for you in all their glory. With summer hot on our heels, there is no need to haul suitcases on long flights or pay extortionate amounts for a beach holiday. Instead, read on and discover Devon’s sandy hidden gems. Beer Beach, Devon:
The picturesque village of Beer is nestled in Lyme Bay, on the 95 mile long Jurassic Coast, England’s first natural World Heritage Site and forms part of the South West Coastal Path. The shingle beach still boasts a small fleet of working fishing boats and the surrounding picture perfect white chalk cliffs provide a natural sun trap, sheltering the cove from prevailing westerly winds. From campsites and caravan to B&B’s and hotels, Beer has a wide range of facilities to cater all holiday requirements. Various local restaurants and pubs will satisfy your desire for fresh seafood, Devonshire ale s and ciders and an atmosphere that brings people back year after year!
Kynance Cove, Lizard, Cornwall:
Set among the wild flower covered rocks of the Lizard Peninsula’s breathtaking and ragged coastline, Kynance Cove was a favourite of Romantic poets and painters. Its azure clear water is perfect for snorkelling and swimming, and the serpentine rock towers invite daredevil jumpers. There’s a lovely National Trust tea room for cream teas and ice creams nearby. At low tide you can climb or swim around to the secret bay opposite the Asparagus Islands where sea caves and rock pools are in abundance.
sALCOMBE BEACH, DEVON: South Sands in Salcombe is one of the most 10

unspoilt beaches in South Devon. It’s located in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the mouth of the estuary, but don’t think that it’s all nature reserves and nothing else because there’s a huge range of different things to see and do all year round. You don’t have to travel abroad in the summer to find some sunshine. During the summer months the South Devon climate is almost Mediterranean, and combined with soft sand and clear seas, you’ve got all the right ingredients for a family seaside holiday. There are car parks close to the beach and disabled access for those with mobility restrictions. South Sands is actually part of a cove so you’re sheltered from the sea winds, and it provides a neat little sun trap if you just want to lie back and soak up the rays.

Jonathan Madge Director
Q
& A: resolving the financial issues that arise from marriage breakdown By Jonathan Madge Jonathan Madge is a Director with The Family Law Company. Jonathan specialises in divorce cases and resolving the financial issues that arise from marriage breakdown. Jonathan aims to help negotiate practical and fair outcomes for his clients and their children wherever possible and, where necessary, represents and supports them effectively through court proceedings. Q. I am in my early forties with children aged 14 and 5. Since the children are staying with me, doesn’t my spouse have a duty to house me? A: Not exactly. Where you have children from the marriage aged under 18, the court’s first consideration is the reasonable needs of those children. In practice, this means that firstly the court is likely to try to find a way to ensure the children have a home of a reasonable size, amenities and location (taking into account the location of the schools and work) and that the parent with care can reasonably afford to finance that home. However, the court will try to balance the assets overall - so that if the children will be staying overnight with the other parent, they should also be able to afford an appropriate home. If the parent with care of the children cannot take on the mortgage, but a cheaper home will provide reasonable accommodation, occasionally a solution is found in which they move to enable the other parent at least to be able to afford to take on a new mortgage for his or her new home. If the parent with care successfully argues that they don’t want to move, and the other parent is tied to the original mortgage for many years, that other parent has a stronger case for being entitled to a share of the equity at a later point. This may mean a forced sale of the home when the first of a number of given events takes place, the latest being usually when the youngest child reaches eighteen or finishes full-time secondary education. Q. So the assets aren’t just divided 50/50 then? A. No. Beyond the first consideration of the children’s needs, there is a list of other factors the court will take into account when working out a fair division of property, other assets and savings, pensions, and income. As well as assets and income that already exist, the court can take into account future earning capacities of both parents. Q. Does that mean someone who has stayed at home
for many years to bring up the children may still be expected to go out to work after the divorce? This depends on the available assets and income, age and ability to do paid work. If a wife, for example, hasn’t done paid work for many years, the court may expect her to do what she can to find a job. However, the court would also look for a way to ensure she is not left stranded, perhaps by awarding maintenance for a specified period of time to give her the chance to find work. If, after this period she can show she has made reasonable efforts to earn a living but has not been successful, she could bring the case back to court for an extension of maintenance – although the cost of this could be high and the outcome uncertain. It is the same scenario if the husband stayed home to bring up the children. Q. I know my husband is going to get a substantial inheritance and his parents are in their eighties. Both my parents died during the marriage and we spent the money. Is future inheritance taken into account after a long marriage? A. Often this is not the case. A court would need to be satisfied that the future inheritance was likely to be received quite soon for it to be considered a ‘relevant’ asset in the divorce. This may seem quite harsh for the person who has already received their inheritance, Q. So the overall outcome in divorce is often not clear-cut? A. That’s right. The Court takes into account a range of factors to achieve what it regards as fair. As experienced family lawyers, The Family Law Company can advise you on how a court would be likely to balance these factors, so a binding financial agreement can be negotiated, and the need for protracted and expensive proceedings can be averted.Where separating couples want to work cooperatively together to find their own financial outcome, we also offer Collaborative Law and mediation services.

The distribution of Plympton Community Magazine has never been beaten by any other local competitor! We have a dedicated marketing distribution company who deliver The Plympton Community Magazine through Plympton household letter box’s. The business was started by two companies who found it difficult to find reliable and economical distributors in the Plymouth and surrounding areas. Our distributors are respectful of occupants wishes at all times and they will never deliver material where the householder/business owner has requested us not to, we always ensure that all material is delivered into the letterbox and pushed through for security purposes. Our distributers use Full GPS tracking systems through mobile phones, this is a very unique system which enables us to view every step on every path, through every street, on every road and down every lane! This form of guaranteed tracking can also tell us how many distributers are working and how fast they are walking, this is then followed by spot checking to ensure they carry out the work as required to meet our very high standards. The Plympton Community Magazine is the original magazine which has been providing local information and great discounts to the people of Plympton for over 5 years. For the past 12 months we have chosen to use this new age form of distribution to ensure Plympton Magazine is delivered on time, every time, with a guaranteed tracked distribution!

Strawberries & cream cheesecake Ingredients 200g buttery biscuits (we used Fox's Butter Crinkles) 200g cream cheese 200ml double cream 6 tbsp icing sugar 2 tsp vanilla extract 500g strawberries, halved or quartered
Method 1. Blitz the biscuits to crumbs in a food processor or in a bowl with the end of a rolling pin. Divide the biscuit crumbs between small pots or jars. 2. In a large bowl, whisk the cream cheese, cream, 5 tbsp icing sugar and the vanilla extract until softly whipped. Tip half the strawberries and the remaining sugar into another bowl and crush with a fork to a purée. Ripple the purée through the cream and divide between the jars. Top each cheesecake with remaining strawberries, secure the lids and chill until ready.

Stability vs Mobility: What’s More Important For My Back? Over recent years our understanding of spinal stability has evolved considerably. Notions of static misalignment, or simple muscle weakness, have gradually changed to incorporate newer evidence about the role of dynamic control, and how these might go awry.
We have seen in our clinic that many of our patients are likely suffering from deficits in sensorimotor control. In other words, injury occurs when a patient fails to detect inappropriate motion and rein it in with a precisely matched muscular response. This is not a conscious task, but one the body should automatically perform when their spine and nervous system is functioning well! The human spine is a hugely complex structure that is simultaneously juggling two competing interests – to remain flexible and to remain stable. The only way that these two opposing demands can be met is to provide sensitive feedback that can monitor the shifting loads and stresses upon spinal tissues and report back to the brain efficiently. But the literature now suggests that our patients can and do suffer from problems of spinal positional awareness (ie. where and how your spinal bones are positioned). Furthermore, the implications of any such
deficiency are quite profound. Information in regard to posture and spinal alignment, is sent to the same area of the brain as that for visual control, hence it is not surprising that people with spinal pain can suffer from dizziness, blurry vision and headaches. Anxiety has been shown to increase in those with greater postural sway (poor spinal stability and control), which makes sense if we consider the survival implications of decreased stability. As confidence in our ability to move decreases we necessarily have to increase our vigilance, prompting heightened anxiety. A recent paper assessed jerk index (smoothness of motion) among other parameters on people with back pain. Following a course of Chiropractic care there was a significant improvement in smooth movement. This is important, as smooth motion is a prerequisite for fine control. Many of our patients suffer acute episodes of pain during innocuous daily movements, and it is suggested that failure to adequately control smooth movement lies at the core of the problem. So it just might be that Chiropractic adjustments have an important role in restoring joint sensitivity and movement control, and thus help in a number of profound ways. Wesley Trowse is a Doctor of Chiropractic, practicing at Plymouth Chiropractic Clinic on Mannamead Road. He has a bachelor degree in Chiropractic Science, a Masters degree in Chiropractic and is currently studying his special interest in functional neurology.

YOUR MORTGAGE & PROTECTION SPECIALISTS With 35 years of financial planning experience behind her, together with numerous awards, then it is perhaps not surprising that Tricia Kennedy’s company, Mortgages4Plymouth, is the number one choice for people looking to buy a home. Tricia is part of a five strong team based on Peverell Park Road, Plymouth. Part of her success has been in the company’s attention to the personal touch that sees her happily taking calls from clients in the evenings. Plus, if the client prefers to meet outside of office hours, then Tricia is happy to arrange an appointment for them in the evening. “I think it is fairly unique for someone in our line of work to be available on the mobile, seven days a week, until nine in the evening,” says Tricia. And, with Plymouth’s close links to the Royal Navy, then Tricia believes that offering this type of flexible approach to working hours is important for military families. “The military do a great job and we understand the difficulties that military personnel may have to get in touch with a broker as their working hours may mean that they are only available to talk at weekends and evenings.” “We are proud to be part of the ‘Forces’ Help to Buy’ scheme and also to be able to provide military personnel with flexible meeting hours as I feel we should give them as much help and support as we can. It is an honour to help people in the armed forces,” says Tricia. And it is not just helping military personnel that have helped to earn Tricia and her team national recognition. Since Mortgages4Plymouth was launched in 2000 then the company has seen hundreds of people write thank you letters and cards. The business has a wide portfolio of services that it can provide for clients – with help and advice available for mortgages and insurance, including cover for death, critical illness and income protection schemes. When it comes down to mortgages then the team has an excellent reputation for being able to cut through the jargon involved to be able to simplify some of the terms used – it is a skill honed during Tricia’s original training as a teacher. There is even a “jargon busting” guide on its website! Tricia says it is a good time to look at mortgages as rates are very low at the moment and house prices are set to carrying on rising as the demand for housing continues to grow. And of course, you may also want to consider a Buy To Let mortgage as an alternative to paying into a pension,
36
or to top up retirement funds. Having spent 25 years advising on pensions and seeing the returns, a buy to let is a fantastic investment, with both property growth and rental income which continues to grow“I sold pensions for 20 years so know what pensions provide and I feel that a ‘Buy to Let’ portfolio is valuable as rental income grows and so lenders feel confident in that market – which means that rates go down.” It is perhaps not surprising that given the team’s combined experience of around 80 years in the industry then they are naturally respected nationwide - and even top financial experts seek their advice. And their service doesn’t just stop with ensuring you’re satisfied. When you do business with Mortgages4Plymouth then the company is happy to provide a free Will service which Tricia says can save massive pitfalls for the 70% of people who haven’t planned ahead in event of their death. Mortgages4Plymouth are also happy to help people who may have only recently gone self employed as the team can match mortgages for clients with just one year’s worth of accounts – so helping you onto the property ladder faster. The friendly and experienced team is happy to provide a no obligation, face to face initial appointment, to help you move further on the property ladder or to discuss the government backed “Help to Buy” scheme for new homes. And, of course, no office would be complete without the office dog. The sixth member of the team is Miss Ellie, a two and a half year old French bulldog. Not only is Miss Ellie an intrinsic part of the Mortgages4Plymouth family but everyone always find her charm irresistible and she certainly lives up to the French bulldog’s reputation of being known for their comical talent! “She is our meet and greeter who often takes on the role of office childminder and is always very entertaining for us all,” says Tricia.
