Donna Baker, Harry Austin, Katherine Millman & Stephen Smith
Most of us will require legal services at some point during our lifetime, and when the time comes, you want to be sure that the services you’re paying for are first-class, efficient, reliable and being carried out by a fully qualified team of lawyers. Look no further than Howard & Over solicitors, who provide all of the above and so much more, ensuring each client’s needs are their top priority every step of the way. We met up with Donna, Katherine, Stephen and Harry to discuss their development as a law firm internally and externally and why they are your top choice when it comes to legal services.
C
hoosing a solicitors firm to take care of your legal requirements can be difficult, especially when the process is sensitive and complicated. You want to ensure they are the right fit for you, with the approachability and experience to take on your issues and deal with them professionally, efficiently all whilst providing a brilliant service. OM caught up with the team at Howard & Over to find out why they are your number one choice in Plymouth for your legal needs. Starting out as a small firm in Plymouth over 100 years ago in 1914, Howard & Over is now an established and respected law firm serving the people of Plymouth and South Hams with first-class service and expert legal advice. Since the firm was established in 1914, it has gone from strength to strength with many changes taking place across the business. The most recent changes have been an upgrade in premises, website and branding with modernisation at the forefront of the move. With their offices in Ivybridge, Devonport and Plymstock becoming increasingly dated, the new management team: Donna Baker, Katherine Millman, Jan Millar and Tim Quinn decided to push the firm forward, moving away from old-fashioned, unsuitable premises to new modern and more importantly accessible offices. When considering new premises for the Plymouth office, the partners decided that Plym House in Plympton was the perfect location, easily accessible from the A38 and all main routes in and out of the city via car or public transport and with free parking available for their clients who drive.
Civil Litigation Solicitor, Stephen Smith tells us “We now have a nice, professional environment where we can welcome clients.” After much hard work and a smooth transition into their new, open-plan offices in December 2017 based at Plym House, Plympton and Glanvilles Mill, Ivybridge; the team has been focusing on providing the best possible service they can for each client. As you would expect from a firm the size of Howard & Over, they are able to offer their services to both personal and business clients with a wide range of services available including Residential and Commercial Property, Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney and Probate, Civil Litigation and Dispute Resolution, Family, Personal Injury and Clinical Negligence, Business and Agriculture, and Debt Collection. Getting to know each client and understanding their needs every step of the process with any legal requirement is something the team at Howard & Over pride themselves on, going out of their way to ensure each client is looked after and understands the process fully. When consulting with a solicitors’ firm, most of the time the matter is urgent, sensitive and occasionally distressing for the client; this is something Howard & Over understand as a law firm and allow each case to be handled with care, diligence and empathy. “The client is relying on you entirely to get it right for them, and documents tend to look like a foreign language to them. When we advise our clients, we make certain it is explained to them and that they understand it fully.”
The Ivybridge office was originally based on Fore Street Approachability, efficiency and friendliness are the top and has now moved to an open-plan and refurbished office attributions Howard & Over uphold themselves on and the in Glanvilles Mill at the centre of Ivybridge with the team team of 25 strong are on hand to help, advise and make opting to keep their location close to the high street. things easy, no matter how small or complicated the case. 6 Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk
The firm value themselves on building a trusting relationship with their clients. Face to face contact is an important quality most people look for in a solicitor. Meeting the person or team dealing with your legal needs builds trust and understanding between the client and the firm. Every member of staff at Howard & Over are happy to meet with their clients and put them at ease throughout the legal process, always on hand to answer questions and keeping them up to date every step of the way. The team at Howard & Over not only provide top quality service but supporting one another with training and development is also a priority. Recently qualified solicitor, Harry Austin, started training with Howard & Over in 2014 after completing his Law degree, working his way up from a paralegal to now a fully qualified solicitor dealing with commercial and residential property matters. Different to most other firms, Howard & Over want qualified staff dealing with their clients and carrying out the work. The partners encourage progression within the firm, supporting every individual with their development and investing in training where required. When investing in legal advice for personal matters or your business needs, you want to be confident the firm you’ve chosen is fully accredited and qualified to carry out the services being offered. This is why Howard & Over chose to become accredited with Lexcel, the Law Society’s quality mark for excellence in legal practice management and client care, giving you peace of mind and reassurance that they have your best interests at heart during the legal process. Finding access to legal advice is something Howard & Over understand can be difficult for many people with cost playing a huge part in how legal issues are dealt with. Their newly updated website focuses on being accessible and easy for all to use via desktop and mobiles with the function to contact the firm directly from the website. They have also ensured their pricing for each service is laid out clearly; something you don’t see often with law firms. “You’ve got to be transparent with your clients; they want to know what they’re paying for and how much it’s going to cost them” No person is ever turned away by the team at Howard & Over with people often dropping in and calling for legal advice. Whether you call or drop in, a member of
Meet the Howard & Over team!
the team will speak with you and they are always happy to help in any situation. Katherine Millman, partner and head of the private client department tells us the team are often going out of their way for clients in the form of home visits. “We offer home visits at no extra cost to the client and particularly with my line of work, a lot more of my clients require home visits as they are elderly or can’t leave their home. You’ve got to put the client first especially when they don’t have anyone else to help them.” Growth and development both internally and externally has been at the forefront for the firm. A change of appearance has seen Howard & Over modernise whilst maintaining the same level of professional, high-quality service and ethics that has kept them strong since 1914. The updated offices have been integral to the development of Howard & Over and have allowed them to expand at a manageable rate all whilst staying core to the services they provide. “We want to continue to grow but at a pace that doesn’t affect our quality service and high street approach” Having been shortlisted for the Devon and Somerset Legal Awards ‘Law Firm of the Year’ for the second time running, which takes place in April we are excited to see what the future brings for this forwardthinking, approachable and modern firm. It is clear to see the firm are looking ahead and further growth is on their minds with the partners pushing for Howard & Over to be the best solicitors’ firm in Plymouth delivering excellent service across their two offices. For more information on Howard & Over, the services they provide and how they can help you with your legal requirements contact a member of the team using any of the details below.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FORESTS The importance of forests cannot be underestimated, and they are a part of our lives more than we realise. The 21st March brings us International Day of Forests and by understanding their importance to life and learning how we can protect them is the first step to forest sustainability!
I
n the South West, we are blessed to be surrounded by beautiful coastlines and greenspace but unfortunately we are all guilty of taking it for granted and causing environmental damage by not understanding how the way we live impacts this system that provides us with life. With the evergrowing pressure to help preserve and protect the environment, understanding the importance of forests to us is a crucial step to making a difference. We depend on forests for our survival, from the air we breathe to the wood we use. Besides providing habitats for animals and livelihoods for humans, forests also offer watershed protection, prevent soil erosion and mitigate climate change. Yet, despite our dependence on forests, we are still allowing them to disappear. International Day of Forests aims to help raise awareness of how much forests mean to us and educate us on how we can help preserve the beauty that mother nature gifted us with. Global warming is no myth and it’s certainly not slowing down, meaning we’ve got to be proactive and do our bit even if it’s a small change to our habits. Forests cover nearly a third of all land on Earth, providing the vital organic infrastructure for life to thrive on our planet, supporting countless species - including our own. But we are all guilty of taking our green spaces and forests for granted by not considering how we live affects them negatively. Every year millions of acres of forest are cleared by humans for housing, farming and industrial purposes so we can create ‘vital’ products such as paper,
12
medicine and timber. We are quick to destroy forest areas such as tropical regions like the Amazon rainforest where deforestation threatens some of the most valuable ecosystems on earth. Unfortunately, the rate at which forests are replaced is too slow, having a detrimental effect on humans as well as the ecosystems that once existed in the forests. Human impacts have already led to the loss of around 40% of the world’s forests. And today, an area the size of a football pitch is still being destroyed every second. Protecting and restoring forests has never been more urgent. It’s time to stop and think about what forests mean to us and how we can help preserve them. Forests pump out the oxygen we need to live and absorb the carbon dioxide we exhale. A single mature, leafy tree is estimated to produce a day’s supply of oxygen for anywhere from two to 10 people. We underestimate how indispensable forests are to everyone on the planet and as humans we rely on forests to help us survive, without these vital spaces our existence may cease. Forests are more than just a bunch of trees. When we take away the forest, it is not just the trees that go. The entire ecosystem begins to fall apart, with dire consequences for all of us. Nearly half of Earth’s known species live in forests, including 80% of biodiversity on land. That variety is especially rich in tropical rainforests, but forests teem with life around the planet: Insects and worms work nutrients into the soil, bees and birds spread pollen and seeds, and keystone species like wolves and big cats keep hungry herbivores in check. Biodiversity is a big deal, both for ecosystems and human economies, yet it’s increasingly threatened around the world by deforestation.
It’s not just other living creatures that use forests as their natural habit. It’s estimated that nearly 300 million people across the globe live in forests, including an estimated 60 million indigenous people whose survival depends almost entirely on native woodlands. Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk
Forests affect our lives every day, if you’ve had your breakfast, sat on a chair, made a shopping list, read a book, used a tissue to catch a sneeze or travelled by bus or car - forests had a vital part to play in each of those things whether directly or indirectly. With better protection, forests can continue to provide a welcome home for wildlife and resources for indigenous people and local communities. And, globally, they can keep providing us all with essentials such as fresh air and clean water. With better management, we can boost timber production without damaging the local environment. And with better planning, we can produce enough food for growing populations without having to convert forests to farmland. The preservation of forests isn’t only important for places such as South America, Africa or Asia where forests take up a large proportion of the land right, forestry conservation in the UK is just as important. The UK is estimated to have 3.19 million hectares of woodland, equating to 13% of the total land area in the UK. (Forest Research - 13th June 2019). Conservation of wildlife in the UK is often overlooked due to the media focusing on larger and more pressing global issues than what’s happening here in the UK. Protecting our forests in the UK has never been as important as it is now with climate change having a huge impact on our own forests and wildlife. It’s only right that we try to protect as many plants and animals as possible. British staples like badgers, goldfinches, otters and weasels don’t have many places left for suitable habitation. Every living creature is important, and well-maintained woodland is key to fostering the survival of wildlife for years to come. Education sits at the forefront of international forest day, if we become educated we can be more proactive in helping preserve the natural habit surrounding us. On average, a UK citizen is responsible for three tonnes of carbon emissions a year. The Forestry Commission estimates that a hectare of woodland can void the effects of two cars’ worth of fuel output over four to six decades. Since there are over two million hectares in this country,
that’s a significant, pro-green difference. So, aside from renewing us with their visual beauty, trees and plants also help to balance the atmosphere and reduce CO2. Not only do forests provide us with the means to survive, but the beautiful scenery and green space also allow us the opportunity to get out and about to enjoy nature at its finest. In Plymouth, we are situated on the doorstep of Dartmoor National Park where 368 miles of land sits. On the east side of Plymouth lies Cann Woods, also known locally as Plym Forest, in the valley of the stunning River Plym. Covering an area of some 230 hectares, Cann Wood is an excellent example of mixed forest with areas of newly planted coniferous and broad-leaved woodland. Walk, cycle or picnic whilst taking in the beautiful views and wildlife captured in the valley. Cann Woods is host to two walking trails, various mountain biking tracks, segway, horse riding and a large picnic area to enjoy a delightful afternoon out with your family. Get in touch with mother nature as you explore Cann Woods for a dog walk or maybe even a morning run. The UK is host to a huge range of Go Ape adventures, designed to inspire you to get out and enjoy the beauty of our forests from the treetops. Nestled in 3500 acres of woodland with the stunning backdrop of the Dartmoor, lies Go Ape Haldon where you can appreciate our forests and all their beauty whilst you climb through the trees. Or you could enjoy a leisurely walk or bike ride, taking your pick from four walking trails and five high-adrenaline cycling trails. We can all do our bit to help combat climate change to protect our forests, there are endless ways to make a difference from changing your diet by cutting down on meat and dairy, choosing more sustainable options when it comes to materials by opting for bamboo or recycled paper or by using alternative methods of transport by taking the bus, walking or lift sharing to work, all will help reduce your impact on the environment.

Meet owner, Luke Foster!
We have all certainly seen some of the worst weather in a while hit the UK and indeed the Southwest since the start of this year and needless to say, most gardens are looking worse for wear after the winter months have taken their toll. Life gets in the way and sometimes it can be a struggle to keep it looking in tip-top condition, especially when the weather is as terrible as it has been lately. If you’re struggling to find the time to tame your overgrown garden, and you are operating on a keen budget then worry not as Man for all Seasons is on hand to transform your garden into a glorious haven that you won’t be embarrassed to show off during the summer months. With a wide range of services available, Luke Foster and his team can deliver a host of reliable and affordable services to maintain your garden throughout the year.
R
unning any successful business these days isn’t easy, especially in the South West where competition is high and the challenges that coincide with running a business can be difficult at times. Luke Foster of Man for all Seasons has been through the thick and the thin since starting up his gardening business in 2008, but ultimately his passion for gardening and commitment to providing excellent service and customer care has pushed his business to be one of the most thriving in the city. After the OM team met with Luke in March 2018, we caught up with him again to find out how far the business has come in that time, what’s changed and what his next move is for this top-quality gardening and landscaping business. Man for all Seasons is a Plymouth-based garden, grounds and landscaping business set up by managing director, Luke Foster in 2008 when he was only 17 years old. Over his years in business, Man for all Seasons has developed the services they offer, with a wide range of services now available to both domestic and commercial customers, from basic lawn care and cutting to complete garden redesigns. Luke tells us - “I like to meet with clients and give them what they need, whether that be basic garden maintenance or a brand new garden design.” The business has developed rapidly since we last saw Luke and his team in 2018, with the most recent
18
change being their move to a brand new, state of the art premises in the heart of Reynolds Park, just off Bell Close in Plympton. After spending two years based at the Millfields Trust in Stonehouse, Luke decided it was time to push the company forward and open up the possibilities for expansion. Luke spent time looking for alternative premises which suited the businesses needs better, focusing on industrial units in Plymouth. Having looked around at various places, Luke came across Reynolds Park in August 2019 where Unit 7 was available. Committing to a complete change in premises is a huge move for a business, there are so many factors to consider, but ultimately it comes down to cost and practicality. Luke took the plunge and moved Man for all Seasons across to their brand new unit at Reynolds Park in December and hasn’t looked back since. “It’s been a huge change for us, we have much more space to work from. It’s definitely been worth it” Moving the business to Plympton has certainly been an asset to the company, it’s now easier to access the A38 being only a short drive from the unit, as well as being closer to their targeted areas of Plympton, Plymstock and Ivybridge. Although the move to Reynolds Park has been beneficial for the business, it was a huge change and massive challenge for the team, as they now have to bring in more work to cover their costs.
Expansion is certainly on the cards for Luke and his team with the move in premises planting the seed. Luke is now focusing his time and energy into pushing for more work across Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall as Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk well as looking to expand his team. Currently, the Man
for all Seasons team consists of Managing Director Luke, Office Manager Amy and then two gardeners Mark and Jamie, who also acts as Assistant Manager. The small team are currently stretched with manpower and are looking to add two passionate and experienced gardeners to their team, as well as a labourer to help on landscaping jobs. Luke is searching for individuals who have basic knowledge of gardening and plants as well as excellent customer service skills. “We are all set up to get bigger, but we need more staff” Along with expanding his team, Luke is actively pressing for more gardening and landscaping work, with maintenance jobs being his main focus. Whilst pushing for more work, Luke is also hoping to expand the area Man for all Seasons cover. They mostly operate in and around Plymouth, but the team can travel west into Cornwall covering Saltash, Liskeard, Landrake and beyond, as well as travelling east towards Exeter, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge. “Being so close to the A38, we are in a prime location to cover a wider area. We are looking to expand on our work in Exeter, Dartmouth and Kingsbridge as well as anywhere in between.” Whether you’re after a complete garden re-design or general maintenance throughout the year, Luke and his team have got you covered. The team are no stranger to a challenging job, but no job is ever too much for the team to handle. Their new premises allow Man for all Seasons to be fully equipped with all the tools required to cut back your hedges, mow your lawn, prune and plant your garden or even design you a brand new garden using their high-end, professional software. Man for all Seasons provides the complete service with the highest level of customer service being their priority every step of the way, from the initial enquiry to the completion of the job and beyond. Attention to detail is one of the most important qualities every business should stand by, this is certainly the case for Luke and his team. Providing a service that’s reliable and tailoring to each individual’s needs is something Man for all Seasons provide themselves on. “We uphold ourselves on the service we deliver. Always ensuring we are reliable and regular, making sure we don’t cut corners is also extremely important.”
The Man for all Seasons team - Luke, Jamie & Mark!
The team are committed to the service they provide and now they have settled into their new unit in Reynolds Park they are more raring than ever to spring into action and get your garden looking like the perfect sanctuary for you to relax in during the spring and summer months. Man for all Seasons really can do it all with years of experience and extensive knowledge, you can be fully assured that Luke and the team will go the extra mile with every job for every client. If you’re looking for a grounds, gardens and landscaping service with a difference then look no further than Man for all Seasons. Luke’s knowledge and his team’s expertise and attention to detail will ensure your garden is well looked after even during the winter months. Developing and expanding isn’t an easy task for any business, but it is clear to see that Luke’s determination and commitment to providing the best service in Plymouth has pushed Man for all Seasons forward. With their brand-new premises fully kitted out, a few extra members of the team will allow the business to reach its full potential, providing customers throughout Plymouth, Devon and Cornwall with top-quality, reliable and good value gardening services. It’s been a busy and exciting two years for Luke and the team at Man for all Seasons and we’re looking forward to seeing what the future brings to them. recipe Ideas
There’s nothing worse than getting in from a long day at work and having to spend your evening preparing dinner for the the whole family. Take the stress out of dinner time this March with our easy to make meals for all to enjoy!
Vegan lemon cheesecake
For the base: 30g coconut oil, plus extra for greasing, 100g blanched almonds, 100g soft pitted date For the topping: 300g cashew nuts, 2 ½ tbsp agave syrup, 50g coconut oil, 150ml almond milk, 2 lemons (zested and juiced) One Put the cashews in a large bowl, pour over boiling water and leave to soak for 1 hr. Meanwhile, blitz the ingredients for the base with a pinch of salt in a food processor. Grease a 23cm tart tin with coconut oil, then press the mix into the base and pop in the fridge to set (about 30 mins). Two Drain the cashews and tip into the cleaned out food processor. Add all the remaining topping ingredients, reserving a quarter of the lemon zest in damp kitchen paper to serve, then blitz until smooth. Spoon onto the base and put in the fridge to set completely (about 2 hrs). Just before serving, scatter over the reserved lemon zest.
Spicy black bean tacos
1 tbsp vegetable oil, 3 garlic cloves (chopped) 3 x 400g cans black beans (drained and rinsed) 3 tbsp cider vinegar, 1 ½ tbsp honey, 1 ½ tbsp smoked paprika, 1 ½ tbsp ground cumin For the guacamole: 1 small garlic clove, 2 tbsp roughly chopped coriander, 1 green chilli (sliced), 2 avocados (halved and stoned), juice 1 lime For the salsa: 110g pack pomegranate seeds, 1 green chilli (finely diced), 1 small white onion (finely diced), small handful fresh coriander (chopped) To serve: 8-12 corn or flour tortillas, chipotle or other hot sauce, soured cream or coconut yogurt One In a large frying pan, heat the oil and add the garlic. Fry until golden, then add the beans. Pour in the cider vinegar, honey and spices along with 1 tsp or more of salt, to taste. Cook until warmed through, crushing gently with the back of your wooden spoon, then set aside. Two The best way to make the guacamole is with a large stone pestle and mortar, but you can use a medium bowl and a flat-ended rolling pin instead. Crush the garlic, coriander and chilli into a rough paste. Scoop in the avocado with a little salt and crush roughly – you want it chunky, not smooth. Squeeze in the lime juice and set aside. Three Mix the salsa ingredients in a small bowl. Heat a griddle pan or steamer and quickly griddle the tortillas or steam a stack of them to warm up. Reheat the bean mixture. To serve, put 1-2 heaped tbsp of beans on a tortilla. Top with a big spoonful of guacamole and some salsa, hot sauce and a dollop of soured cream or yogurt.

Stuffed red peppers
100g wholewheat couscous (rinsed and drained), 3 tbsp raisins, bunch parsley (roughly chopped), 25g pine nuts, 100g feta (crumbled), pinch of cinnamon, 3 tbsp olive oil, 290g jar grilled whole peppers (drained and rinsed) ONE Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Put the couscous and raisins in a bowl with a pinch of seasoning and just cover with boiling water. Leave to stand for 5 mins. Two Fluff the couscous with a fork and stir through the parsley, pine nuts, half the feta, the cinnamon and 2 tbsp of the oil. Mix and season to taste. THREE Generously stuff the peppers with the couscous mix (any leftover stuffing can be served next to the peppers), then lay them in a small roasting tin and scatter over the remaining feta. Drizzle with the remaining oil and bake in the oven for 15 mins until hot and the feta has turned golden.
Vegan cookies and cream brownies 265g self-raising flour, 245g soft brown sugar, 50g cocoa powder, 1 tsp vanilla extract, 110ml vegetable oil, 1 ½ tbsp white wine vinegar, 85g dairy-free coconut yogurt, 150g vegan cookies of your choice (we used Oreos), broken into chunks ONE Heat oven to 170C/150C fan/gas 3 and line a 18 x 30cm brownie tin with baking parchment. In a bowl mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa and ½ tsp salt. In a jug mix together 125ml water with the vanilla, oil, vinegar and yogurt. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix until smooth and combined. two Pour the mix into the tin and smooth the top. Push the chunks of vegan biscuits into the batter, leaving some poking out of the top. (We used Oreos, which are made with dairy-free ingredients, although be aware that allergy information indicates that these may contain traces of milk.) Bake for 30-35 mins, until set but still squidgy in the middle. Leave to cool in the tin, then cut into squares.
Sausage Ragu 3 tbsp olive oil, 1 onion (finely chopped), 2 large garlic cloves (crushed), ¼ tsp chilli flakes, 2 rosemary sprigs (leaves finely chopped), 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes, 1 tbsp brown sugar, 6 pork sausages, 150ml whole milk, 1 lemon (zested), 350g rigatoni pasta (or any other pasta), grated parmesan and ½ small bunch parsley (leaves roughly chopped) to serve One Heat 2 tbsp of the oil in a saucepan over a medium heat. Fry the onion with a pinch of salt for 7 mins. Add the garlic, chilli and rosemary, and cook for 1 min more. Tip in the tomatoes and sugar, and simmer for 20 mins. Two Heat the remaining oil in a medium frying pan over a medium heat. Squeeze the sausagemeat from the skins and fry, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, for 5-7 mins until golden. Add to the sauce with the milk and lemon zest, then simmer for a further 5 mins. To freeze, leave to cool completely and transfer to large freezerproof bags. THREE Cook the pasta following pack instructions. Drain and toss with the sauce. Scatter over the parmesan and parsley leaves to serve.

MOTHER’S DAY Mother’s Day is on Sunday 22nd of March and it’s time to show your mum that you really do care about her. Go and pick up a fresh bunch of flowers and tell her how much you love her!
M
others and mother-figures are incomparable. They may be the first people we ever know when we enter the world, and they love and care for us as we grow up and beyond. Once a year, countries around the world celebrate Mother’s Day; a day dedicated to all mothers or mother figures so that we can show our appreciation.
The fourth Sunday of Lent, otherwise known as Mother’s Day or Mothering Sunday, is a time for celebrating all that our Mums have done for us over the years. With more of us living further away from home and loved ones than ever before, the time we spend with our family on Mother’s Day is all the more special.Today, we know Mother’s Day as a day where we acknowledge the incredible things the women in our lives do for us.
Wouldn’t a nice, hot bubble bath be the perfect mother’s day treat? Stock up on salts and lotions this Mother’s Day to allow your mum to sit back, relax and unwind for a long soak with a glass of her favourite wine, a new book or a soothing playlist of her best-loved songs blissfully playing in the background. Let’s face it, most mums despise having a messy home with toys flung everywhere and mountains of washing piles scattered around the house. So team up, grab some rubber gloves, sponges and the feather duster for a day of scrubbing and polishing. Mum can put her feet up with a cup of tea whilst you do the hard work hoovering and cleaning don’t forget the washing, ironing and dishes too!
Mother’s Day isn’t always about our own mothers, it’s about all mums, step-mums, mothers-in-law, mums to be, nans, grans, sisters, aunties, carers and the list goes on!
A day of relaxation and peace doesn’t have to be expensive and involve a fancy spa.
Mother’s Day is a chance to make them all feel special for all of the great things they do for us. It’s a day to show love, gratitude and appreciation to all wonderful mums everywhere, through acts of kindness and the giving of Mothers Day gifts and flowers.
Why not take the kids out for the day to give mum a day of rest and pampering. And if you’ve got toddlers then she may even be able to go to the toilet without a 3-year-old hanging from her leg begging for food for the 10th time of the day...the littlest things really do make a difference!
But are lavish gifts such as jewellery, gift vouchers or spa days really what mums want for Mother’s day?
To finish off the day with family time, cook up a feast of mums favourite meal for all to enjoy.
There are many things you can do for your mum on Mother’s Day to show her you care without splashing the cash, and she’ll probably appreciate it more anyway!
Mother’s Day doesn’t have to be all about spending money, it’s about spending time together and showing mum that you really do care and you’re grateful for all of the wonderful things she has done for you.
What more could you want on a day that’s all about you than a nice long, uninterrupted lie in?! With Mother’s Day occurring on a Sunday, it’s the perfect day to allow mum to enjoy a few more hours in bed than normal without being interrupted by screaming, questions and nagging! You could even treat her to a delicious breakfast in bed after her well earned 12 hours of sleep.

Grant of Probate Depending on their assets, you may need to apply to get a Grant of Probate (or Grant of Letters of Administration if there is no Will). This is a legal document which authorises you to deal with the assets under the estate.
What to do when someone dies: their legal affairs.
T
he grief you feel when you lose a loved one is overwhelming. On top of this, you could be faced with having to deal with the paperwork and forms to register their death and sort out their funeral and legal affairs. First Steps and their Will Some of the immediate steps you need to take are to make sure the death is registered and that their property is secure. This includes notifying their home insurer to let them know of their passing and if their property is now unoccupied. At the same time, you will probably be involved in arranging their funeral and checking any instructions as to their wishes. You might have to begin a search to find out whether your loved one made a Will, or you may know there is a Will in place and you are named as an executor. The role of an executor can seem daunting and you might need a little guidance as to what you need to do to get you started. Or, you could feel you are not able to sort out their legal affairs alone and need some help from the outset. We can tailor our service to your needs. If your loved one did not make a Will you will need to explore the intestacy provisions as to guidance on the next steps. Assets and Finances You will need to start consider the value of your loved one’s estate and begin sorting out their finances. If it is your spouse who has passed away some assets could pass to you automatically if you held them jointly. Try and keep a record of what has passed to you in case you need it later. Sometimes banks can release money without the need for a Grant of Probate. Anything received from the estate should be kept in a separate bank account from your own funds until you are ready to distribute it in accordance with the Will and wishes of your loved one.
To apply for a Grant of Probate you will need a list of all your loved one’s assets and liabilities as at the date of their death. The forms can sometimes be complicated, and many people feel at this stage that they need a little extra guidance. We can help you fill in the forms to obtain the Grant of Probate so you can continue dealing with the estate. Or you may feel that you wish to pass over the administration of the estate to us completely. Distribution Once the Grant of Probate has been issued, you can then look to start cashing in the assets and paying off any liabilities. This is a difficult stage of the administration and you will need to keep accurate accounts to ensure nothing is missed. If the estate has limited funds, there is an order of priority to consider before you begin paying liabilities and any money under the estate. You may also need to consider whether there are any unknown creditors or people who may feel left out of the Will and wish to make a claim against the estate. This can be a stressful and complicated time. We strongly recommend you seek legal advice to make sure you are doing things correctly. Finally, before making any distribution, you will need to make sure any tax due for the period of administration or up to the date of death has been paid. Although many estates may not need to worry about this as they are below the thresholds for the reporting requirements, it is wise to double check the position so the estate does not receive an unexpected tax bill. Whether you feel comfortable dealing with the estate but want a little help making the application for the Grant of Probate or whether you wish to seek some help from the outset, we at Woollcombe Yonge understand what a difficult and emotional time this can be and are here to help relieve some of the legal burden. If you need any help or would like to talk about any legal matter raised in this article, please contact Michelle Crump on 01752 827922 or email mc@wysolicitors.co.uk.

NATIONAL BED MONTH Throughout March it’s National Bed Month – a whole month dedicated to learning about the importance of a good night’s sleep and how to improve your kip with a comfortable, supportive bed.
W
ho doesn’t love a full, uninterrupted night’s sleep? If you find you’re struggling to get to sleep or you’re waking up at 4 am because the springs in your bed are uncomfortable then fear not as March is National Bed Month and we’re here to tell you how important it is to get a full night’s sleep and what you should be doing to ensure you really do get your beauty sleep. Organised by The Sleep Council, the month aims to remind us all of why a sound sleep is good for our health. It’s thought that good sleep has amazing properties that make you healthier and happier, and can even add years to your life! But why do we sleep? It may at first seem glaringly obvious, but the question of sleep is actually quite mysterious. In simple terms, it is an extended bout of rest we experience on a daily basis, where we most often lay down with our eyes closed. But there’s more to sleep than meets the eye. One of the vital roles of sleep is to help us solidify and consolidate memories. As we go about our day, our brains take in an incredible amount of information. Rather than being directly logged and recorded, however, these facts and experiences first need to be processed and stored; and many of these steps happen while we sleep. Overnight, bits and pieces of information are transferred from more tentative, short-term memory to stronger, longterm memory—a process called “consolidation.” How much sleep do we need? Sleep is a vital indicator of overall health and wellbeing. The average person spends around a third of
36
their life asleep. In this time, our bodies are able to replenish energy stores and make repairs, while our minds organise and store the memories of the day before. The amount of sleep you need depends on your age, sex, health and other elements, and sleep cycles change as we grow older. Healthy sleep is critical for everyone since we all need to retain information and learn skills to thrive in life. But this is likely part of the reason children - who acquire language, social, and motor skills at a breathtaking pace throughout their development - need more sleep than adults. While adults need 7-9 hours of sleep per night, oneyear-olds need roughly 11 to 14 hours, school-age children between 9 and 11, and teenagers between 8 and 10. During these critical periods of growth and learning, younger people need a heavy dose of slumber for optimal development and alertness. How can you improve your sleeping habits? To begin a new path towards healthier sleep and a healthier lifestyle, begin by assessing your own individual needs and habits, you need to test how you respond to different amounts of sleep. To pave the way for better sleep, consider these simple, yet effective healthy steps to fulfilling your sleep goals! Your Bedroom If you’re having trouble sleeping, one of the first things to consider is your bedroom. In order to get a restful night’s sleep, you need the right setting, which means a clean, peaceful and welcoming room. Many of us are unknowingly sleeping in a bedroom that’s simply not fit for purpose, and that environment could be the key cause of a restless night. Always ensure that when it’s time for sleep you make your room completely dark, this means investing in some blackout blinds or curtains or even an eye mask.
Say no to technology in the bedroom! That means avoiding televisions and computers. Having access to these will urge you to switch on when you can’t drift off, Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk which in turn can lead to even more disturbed sleep.
matters worse, an active brain triggers other worries, so it’s even harder to achieve sleep.Once this pattern sets in, bedtime can become a thing of anxiety. To help with anxiety and stress, consider visiting your local GP to find ways to help combat your stress. Diet
Your Bed The foundation of a great night’s sleep is a comfortable bed. The right mattress can make a huge difference between a restful and restless night, saving you from fatigue and irritability for the rest of the day. An unsupportive mattress will encourage a poor sleeping posture, which prevents you from a good sleep. If you regularly wake up with aches and pains, it’s probably time to change your mattress. There’s a huge amount of choice on the bed market, which can make selecting the right one difficult. But one thing is for sure, the right support is crucial. If your bed is too hard or soft, it will be uncomfortable and unsupportive. Your mattress should be firm enough to support your spine in the correct alignment while conforming to your body’s contours. Investing in a good mattress isn’t something to take lightly, but quality should always be above price. And remember ALWAYS try before you buy! Your Lifestyle The 21st-century lifestyle is typically fast-paced, chaotic and jam-packed with technology. From the moment we wake up we switch on our brains with smartphones, and as our day progresses, we’re presented with even more triggers. There are simple ways to adjust your lifestyle to promote a better night’s sleep. These minor changes will help you to wind down and relax, removing you from the hectic, technology-crammed world that we live in. For starters, switch off your tech a couple of hours before bedtime – that includes your phone! Pick up a good book and get stuck into it rather than checking how many likes your latest post on Instagram got! Another thing that’ll be sure to help you sleep better is avoiding drinking alcohol or caffeine before bed, opt for water as a healthier option to quench your thirst. One way to ensure you sleep well at night is to stop napping during the day, if you got a good night’s sleep then you wouldn’t need to nap!
They say you are what you eat, and when it comes to getting a restful night’s sleep, the food and drink you consume have a drastic effect. The best foods for sleep include milk, cherries, chicken and rice, while fatty meat, curry and alcohol are some of the worst. Some people choose not to eat after 6 pm, as late meals can make it difficult to sleep. However, if you are eating before bed, remember that there three main chemicals that promote good sleep: tryptophan, serotonin and melatonin. Excercise Sports and exercise can help you to enjoy a better quality of sleep. Working out effectively can tire your body out gently, promoting a better night’s sleep. Releasing pent up tension through exercise is also highly beneficial, helping to banish stress before bedtime. Exercising also lowers your body’s temperature, which induces better sleep. When it comes to exercise, the most important thing is to feel fitter and healthier. If you are experiencing sleeping problems, try to exercise a little more or change the type of activities you do. Yoga is renowned for its relaxation and sleep benefits, while moderateaerobic exercise like walking has been found to help people fall asleep more quickly. For some people getting a good night’s sleep is easy and normal, for other’s it requires changes in both lifestyle and environment. Remember, it’s all about being aware of your surroundings and your lifestyle, small changes will make a huge difference in how you sleep. Start with sticking to a sleep schedule every day of the week (that’s right - weekends too) and then eliminate anything else that may be causing you problems sleeping to reach your ultimate goal... a full, uninterrupted night of beauty sleep. For more information on how you can get a better night’s sleep, head to www.sleepcouncil.org.uk or www.sleepfoundation.org
Stress and Worry Scientists have found a direct correlation between anxiety and the rhythm of sleep. When a person is anxious, their heart rate increases, which causes the brain to ‘race’. An alert mind produces beta waves, making youPlease far too stimulated to sleep. To make mention The Plympton Community Magazine when responding to adverts
