When making any kind of legal claim, choosing your legal representatives is a very important decision, and can make a huge difference; it could mean the difference between a wellhandled case and a shambolic ordeal, success and failure – the right compensation and a missed opportunity for justice. What we all look for is trusted and honest legal advice along with extensive knowledge and reputation but without the huge price tag, a firm that puts your needs first with both, personal and business legal issues. Stephen Hall, Director and Solicitor at Evans Harvey Solicitors, spoke with OM Magazine about their recent renovations, the services they provide and future plans for the company.

E

vans Harvey has served the Crownhill community for over 30 years. We last visited them in August 2017 when they had recently purchased their current premises ready for a huge renovation. Two years on and they have finally moved back into their brand new state of the art offices based in the heart of Crownhill Village. Stephen joined the company in December 2008 after a career working as a Solicitor in personal injury around the UK. Since joining, Stephen has worked his way up from partner to Director, taking on the practice as owner in 2010.

Stephen Hall - Director The questionnaires provide the team with valuable feedback to help them improve their services. Additionally for every form returned Evans Harvey donate money to St Luke’s Hospice. Giving back to the community is one of the top traits of the firm. To this end Stephen is also Chairman of The Crownhill Community Group which was initially set up with charitable intentions at its heart with the assistance of the local business communities, the Church and local Plymouth Councillors. One of the highlights of the work of the group is the Christmas festivities each year and of course the Christmas light up with Santa for the children. Stephen says that prior to the community association being set up there were no Christmas festivities and the event gets bigger every year and is well attended. Working in a busy Solicitors firm sees the team flying by the seat of their pants, ready for every situation that may arise, often being called to emergency Court proceedings at the drop of a hat.

As you would expect from a Solicitors firm, Evans Harvey offer a wide range of services to their clients, including property, conveyancing, wills, tax and probate, family and matrimonial law, personal injury, company and commercial, employment, litigation and chancery work.

However despite how busy Evans Harvey are they still make time for the local community, visiting local care and nursing homes on a weekly basis. One thing that sets Evans Harvey above other Solicitor firms in Plymouth is that they offer home visits to clients and members of staff are often heading out of the office to visit elderly clients who cannot attend their offices occasionally taking a box of chocolates and flowers to cheer them up. Stephen says that often once the legal process is sorted our clients will often engage in conversation and have fascinating life stories to tell and makes it much more than simply a job.

Evans Harvey listen and understand every client’s needs to ensure they are providing the best level of service. Also all clients are given the opportunity to complete a customer satisfaction form after each case has been closed.

Stephen says “we do nursing home visits two or three times a week and we do not charge travel costs or hourly fees for travel. We simply do it. If it is an hour of your time and if you cannot do that then quite frankly you should not be doing it at all.”

Since taking over, Stephen has focused on growing the team to become a stronger foundation for their clients with the legal market. The Evans Harvey team is currently 18 strong with plans to continue to recruit for upcoming positions in their new offices.

Evans Harvey value themselves on the ethos that building a trusting relationship with clients is very important and as such have developed relationships with clients spanning many decades and effectively have become the family Solicitor not just for them but their children and grandchildren etc. Catering to every client is extremely important to the team, they hold free drop-in clients on Tuesday mornings 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. with advice on wills, probate and inheritance claims and on Wednesday mornings 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. for family matters. The firm will also be re-instating their Tuesday evening clinic once things have settled down from the move. The office is also open on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. It is good for people that cannot get in during the week. The expansion to their office has seen some huge improvements. Stephen and the team could not be more pleased to be back in their permanent premises. Evans Harvey have been situated in their current building for over 35 years but only fully purchased the premises in 2017 with the view to renovate the two houses into one combined set of offices – and they have done exactly that. Having moved out of their Crownhill Village and into a temporary office on Budshead Road in December 2018, the Evans Harvey team finally moved back into their brand new, refurbished premises on 27th August 2019, after a long 8 months of renovations. After spending 8 months sharing an open plan office, the Evans Harvey team are thrilled to be back in their own space with all legal executives and Solicitors having their own separate office, large enough to accommodate clients; meaning no more sharing. The refurbishment has allowed for nine extra rooms to be situated within the building, as well as a large conference room seating up to 10 people comfortably, a brand new reception area with Evans Harvey branding and fully fitted disabled toilet facilities. Every detail has been carefully considered with the renovation.

Meet the Evans Harvey Team! “The new office space is pleasant to walk into and I think it has been very sensitively done in so much that we still want to offer the service to the local community and we certainly don’t want people to think we’re putting our prices up to cover this, we are not.” The process of expansion has not been easy or quick, with a three- stage plan from buying the premises, building the extension and now the first two stages are complete they can focus on growing the team even further and expanding the firm to new locations across Plymouth. Expansion is definitely on Stephen’s mind despite having only just returned to their head office. To this end Stephen has acquired an interest in a legal practice in Mutley Plain, Plymouth and has indicated that for the future “we should watch this space”. There is no doubt that Stephen thrives to push Evans Harvey to be the best Solicitors firm in Plymouth with some huge plans in store for the future. It is clear that his passion for both his work and his clients really are endless with every member of the team delivering first-class service to each and every client. Stephen says “We are looking to expand significantly over the next 5 years”. Evans Harvey also benefits from free 3 hour car parking in the public car park to the rear of its Crownhill premises. THE HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN Halloween is celebrated on 31st of October every year across the world, but how did it begin? Where did it begin? And how is it celebrated around the globe?

T

he 31st of October is nearly upon us which only means one thing... Halloween is coming. Halloween is now one of the most celebrated holidays in the UK, so get those pumpkins carved and lit, start thinking about what you’ll dress up as and dig out the costumes from that box in the loft, and make sure you’ve got bags of sweets at the ready for the trick or treaters - it’s going to be a spooktastic event!

and the Catholic Church eventually declared November the 2nd as All Soul’s Day – a day to honour the dead.

On Thursday the 31st of October, revellers will be able to enjoy all the spine-tingling festivities that Halloween brings the world every year. The haunting event usually consists of fun activities and events, including trick or treating, watching scary films and carving pumpkins.

Halloween has many spooky traditions, trick or treating being one but why do we go trick or treating?

But why do we celebrate Halloween and where did the tradition originate? It’s a common misconception that Halloween originated in America, but the tradition was actually started up a bit closer to home. The origins of Halloween come from ancient religious rituals, dating back to the ancient Celtic end-of-summer festival of Samhain 2,000 years ago, the Celts, who lived in the area that is now the UK, Ireland and Northern France, celebrated the New Year on November the 1st. They believed that at the end of the year, on the night of October the 31st, spirits came back from the dead to wander amongst the living. In the 9th century, the influence of Christianity had spread into the Celtic lands,

It’s widely believed that the Catholic Church wished to replace the Celtic festival of the dead with a churchsanctioned holiday, therefore the term All Soul’s Day eventually transformed into the name All Hallow’s Eve; and as we know it today, Halloween.

Many UK and Ireland Halloween traditions, such as trick-or-treating, stem back as far as 1000 AD. Poor citizens would knock from door-to-door, begging for food in exchange for songs and prayers to commemorate passed loved ones. These citizens were known as soulers because the food they received was known as a soul-cake: a small round cake with a cross marked on top which, when eaten, symbolised a soul being freed from Purgatory. Later in the 19th century, the tradition of souling was adapted into what is known as guising in which instead of offering a prayer, children would perform songs, recite poems, tell jokes, play instruments or play a trick in return for coins. Trick-or-treating specifically became popular in early 1940s America after the World War 2 sugar rations were lifted, following on from the movement to turn Halloween into a communitycentred holiday in the 1800s. The tradition of trick-or-treating today is associated with dressing in a disguising costume. When the Celts believed spirits came back from the dead, they also thought that citizens would encounter ghosts if they left the safety of their homes. Therefore, upon venturing out into the cold of the night, people would wear masks so as to not be recognised by the ghosts.

14

Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk

In Celtic celebrations on 31st October, villagers would dress up to ward off spirits and would leave out treats to satisfy any unwelcome, phantom visitors. Soon, people would dress up as ghosts and wear other terrifying costumes, putting on an act in exchange for candy. This is trick or treating in its oldest form. Skip ahead a few years, and 2nd November became All Souls Day in England. Poor people would visit the homes of the rich and ask that they pray for their deceased loved ones. Soon, children would start knocking on the doors of the wealthy asking for food and money. In Scotland and Ireland children would wear costumes and perform tricks on people’s doorsteps in exchange for a treat. This was known as guising. Many years later, immigrants arriving in America, particularly from Ireland, made Halloween popular and introduced the tradition of guising. Over time it became a rowdy activity and an opportunity for young people to create havoc, but sugar rationing during World War 2 put an end to it. After World War 2, Trick or Treating became popular again, and continues to be to this day, and has been promoted over the years by the media and comic books. The industry is now booming, with sweet companies making a fortune in October each year, particularly in the US. The only difference we really notice today is how Halloween continues to be a spooky time of year in the UK, as history dictates, while costumes are much less scary and a lot more colourful in the US. Today, in the UK, Halloween is celebrated as the third biggest holiday after Christmas and New Years Eve. Traditional activites range from ghost walks, lighting bonfires, pumpkin carving, apple-bobbing and of course, trick-or-treating at night. Many countries around the globe traditionally celebrate the holiday of Halloween and it’s being celebrated by morning people in more countries than ever before. There’s a simple reason: it is fun and it is good, clean, harmless fun for young and old alike! In Mexico, Latin America and Spain, citizens celebrate the Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in which they honour the spirits of deceased loved ones who have returned from heaven to enjoy the festivities. Breads, candies and other foods are made into iconic shapes of skulls and skeletons. In Germany, Halloween has gained its popularity in the

past decade ,as many of the older generation believe that Halloween is merely an Americanised, commercial holiday. However, one long-standing tradition is to hide knives so as to not risk harm to (or from) the returning spirits. Japan embraces Halloween as a Western-style tradition and hold themed events at their Disneyland and Universal Studios theme parks. Japanese Buddhists also honour the spirits of their ancestors in a tradition known as Bon Festival. In China, the Halloween festival is named Teng Chieh. Food and water are placed in front of family photographs of deceased loved ones. Bonfires and lanterns are also lit to guide their spirits safely back to earth. In Austria, for Seleenwochen (Alls Soul’s Week) it’s also tradtional to place bread, water and a lighted lamp on a bedside table before sleeping. This welcomes the dead souls back to earth. Austrian Catholics celebrate this period from October 30th to November 8th. Halloween is not typically a part of Australian culture, however is celebrated non-religiously as result of America’s pop-culture influence. Trick-or-treating is also rare in France as they do not traditionally celebrate the holiday; neither does the country of Russia. Sweden celebrates Halloween, known to them as Alla Helgons Dag, from the 31st of October to November the 6th. As with many other countries’ celebrations, the day becomes a shortened working day or vacation. Some countries follow similar practises and superstitions to those originating in the UK and Ireland. The Belgians believe it unlucky for a black cat to cross their path or enter their home. Other popular superstitions originating from the Celts say that if a member of the house sees a spider on All Hallows Eve, it is the soul of the deceased member of their family. Whether Halloween is your thing or not, get in the spirit, grab some sweets from the shop and most importantly... have fun!!!

When it comes to youth sports, parents are so much more selective these days and most are likely to get involved if they can. It’s up to you to help your children choose not only age and personality appropriate sports, but to help set a foundation for fitness from a young age. However, when it comes to skiing or snowboarding, unless you fly to the Alps or beyond, your options are limited. With snowsports being well established, modern equipment and teaching methods make it easier than ever for you and your children to learn a new skill right on your doorstep. Plymouth Snowsports Centre is the closest facility within 100 miles who are open every day of the week and over the years has dramatically expanded its activities way beyond the famous ski slope.

W

hen someone mentions ‘Britain’s Ocean City’, people wouldn’t normally associate it with Snowsports but, for 30 years now, anyone who has made the arduous journey to Plymouth has been greeted by the sight of the ski slope. OM spent a sunny afternoon catching up with the team at Plymouth Snowsports Centre to find out how they’ve turned the Plymouth ski slope into the iconic landmark it is today and how they plan on celebrating 30 years of Snowsports. Plymouth Snowsports Centre is celebrating 30 years on the 22nd of October 2019 and they couldn’t be happier to celebrate this joyous occasion. The centre was bought in 1989 by business owner, at the time John Nike. Since the sad passing of John Nike, the Nike family now own John Nike Leisuresport.

The weekend will be packed with fun-filled activities for people to throw themselves into. Taster sessions will be available throughout the day for people of all ages to learn how to ski and snowboard for £5 and all the activities will be available at discounted prices, including tobogganing for only £1 per ride. The centre has ensured that everybody is catered for with a face painter, a bouncy castle, and even a falconry display from Westcountry Falconry on both days. Also, DBS (Deep Blue Sound) will be providing a musical accompaniment to enliven the open weekend and showcase new and upcoming local talent from their training programme. If all of that wasn’t enough, they are hoping to break the world record of ‘longest chain of linked skiers’ – which involves skiers travelling 100 metres while holding hands. James, Head of Snowsports, is hoping that they can beat the current record of 60. The centre has pulled out all of the stops for the open weekend event and ensured that there is something for everyone, of all ages, to get involved in to celebrate 30 years of this amazing leisure facility in Plymouth. The centre has had a few changes over the years, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the popularity of the snowsports they offer. Skiing and snowboarding remain extremely popular, as well as the Cresta Toboggan run and snow tubing slope. The centre offers activities that bring people of all ages together to try something new and embrace this huge leisure facility at the heart of Plymouth.

The centre offers a ‘Slide, Ride and Drop’ package which is a huge hit with people visiting the It’s been 30 years since boxer Barry Mcguigan officially centre. This package offers the opportunity to do opened the centre in 1989 and the staff couldn’t be more tobogganing, snow tubing and their viper drop all in excited to get stuck into the celebrations. Ian Colton, one session. Another exciting package available is Centre Manager, Helen Ambler, Assistant Manager, James their increasingly popular Thrilling Thursday sessions Pitcher, Head of Snowsports and Gill Robinson, Head of where for £15pp you can have unlimited snow tubing, Catering have been busy planning out a weekend of fun for tobogganing and viper dropping between 4 pm and 8 the people of Plymouth and beyond to enjoy, embrace and pm, with the Alpine Lodge serving some fantastic food get stuck into the snowsports activities and much more. offers to feed the appetite worked up afterwards. With a huge 110 metre main slope that you can’t miss and Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th October will see a dedicated beginner slope, there’s a variety of lessons Plymouth Snowsports Centre host their open available. Both private and group, ski or snowboard weekend to commemorate 30 years of being open lessons are available at an affordable cost, starting from as a snowsports facility. £15 for group sessions and £60 for private lessons. 22 Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk

Lessons cater for all levels from beginner, right the way up to instructor training. (Schools and Scouts/Cubs/Guides/ Brownies and other clubs start from £10pp). Holiday club sees Plymouth Snowsports Centre flocked with kids enjoying their activities. During the school holidays, parents can enrol their children into the holiday clubs offered knowing they’re being supervised whilst having a fun time. The children choose between learning to ski or snowboard with all of the equipment included and then they get to use the toboggan, snow tube and, viper drop. “The great thing about it is that it’s cheaper than child-care being only £35 per day and they get to learn a new sport and skill, as well as socialising and interacting with other children. They also get a hot lunch and squash included.” A few new members of management have seen Plymouth Snowsports Centre head in a different direction than before. They are now focusing on growing their audience and ensuring people still know they are open for business and sharing the excellent activities they have to offer. Catering Manager, Gill Robinson is looking to raise the profile of the centre by bringing back events that used to be extremely popular with the locals. In October, they will re-launch their Sunday lunches which used to be hugely popular with the people of Plymouth. Gill is also bringing back quiz and karaoke nights to get people through the doors. One event that is always a big hit with the locals is the comedy nights hosted on the first Friday of every month. The event is held in the newly decorated Alpine Lodge where food is available from their special comedy night menu. Tickets are available for £10 if pre-booked or £12 on the door. Gill tells us that they have a new cook and that the feedback on their new menu and food has improved massively and is being recognised by their regular customers. Their focus is to cater for everyone with a variety of options available on the menu, catering for vegetarians, vegans, gluten intolerances and children.

as weddings, engagement parties, wakes, networking events, hen and stag do’s, corporate meetings, Christmas functions, and so much more. They are looking to promote this and see the use of the centre for functions grow. “It’s a really nice place as you’re away from everything and it’s lovely and quiet.” Plymouth Snowsports Centre offers more than any other leisure facility in Plymouth and beyond, with something to do for families, individuals, and large groups. There are plans to resurface the slopes within the next two years and plenty of events in store to help grow, improve and build the centre to reach its full potential and we here at OM can’t wait to see what the next few years will bring and we couldn’t be more pleased for them. For more information on Plymouth Snowsports Centre, including information about facilities, prices and bookings - head over to their website using the details below or give them a call on 01752 600220 where a member of the team will be happy to talk to you.

The Alpine Lodge can accommodate up to 140 on a normal day, as well as hosting functions of all kinds. The centre is immensely popular with birthday parties for all ages from young children right the way up to 80th birthday parties. Our Favourite Recipe ideas Halloween is nearly here and we’ve found the spookiest recipes for you to try out for any spooky occasion. Why not try out these simple party food ideas to rival any ghost or ghoul this Halloween!

Pastry snakes 320g pack ready-rolled puff pastry, 50g grated parmesan or vegetarian alternative, flour For dusting: 1 egg (beaten) poppy seeds, nigella seeds, sesame seeds or celery seeds, To decorate: black or green peppercorns One Heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/ gas 7. Unroll the pastry and top with a couple of handfuls of parmesan, then fold in half. On a lightly floured surface, roll the pastry out to a thickness of 2mm. Cut into 1cm strips, then twist each strip several times to form a snake. Two Lay out the snakes on a baking sheet, then brush each one with egg and sprinkle with more cheese. To decorate, scatter over the seeds. Flatten one end of each snake and press in two peppercorns for eyes. Bake for 12-14 mins, or until golden. Leave to cool. Will keep for two days in an airtight container.

Healthy Halloween nachos For the guacamole: 2 limes, 2 small avocados, 1 bunch coriander For the sweetcorn salsa: ½ a 160g can sweetcorn, 200g cherry tomatoes, 1 red pepper, 2 spring onions, 3 sundried tomatoes, 400g can black beans, ½ tsp cumin, ½ tsp coriander, ½ tsp smoked paprika For the bat-shaped nachos: 4 wholewheat tortillas, 1½ tsp oil, 4 purple carrots (cut into sticks) One Start by making the guacamole. Pour the lime juice into a bowl and add the avocado. Mash well with a potato masher or the back of a fork until it’s the consistency you like – we served ours fairly chunky. Add half of the chopped coriander, season to taste and spoon into a shallow bowl or serving dish. Two Now mix all of the salsa ingredients together, along with the remaining chopped coriander. Season with salt and pepper. Arrange clumps of the salsa on top of the guacamole. Cover and chill for up to 30 mins while you make the bat nachos. Three Lay a tortilla wrap out on your chopping board and brush with a little of the oil. Cut out bats (or other spooky shapes) using a cookie cutter, scissors or both. Cut them as close together as possible to minimise waste. You should be able to get about 8-10 from each wrap, depending on the size of your cutter. Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6. Put all the tortilla shapes on 2 or 3 large baking sheets and bake for about 4-5 mins or until golden and crisp.

Grasshopper cocktail Ice, 25ml crème de menthe, 25ml white crème de cacao, 25ml single cream To garnish: mint sprig, 25g melted chocolate (optional) Start by making the garnish. Take a sprig of mint, strip off the leaves at the base and dip the stalk in the melted chocolate, holding the upper leaves gently. Leave to set on a plate or tray. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice then pour in the liqueurs and cream. Shake hard until the outside of the cocktail shaker is cold, then strain in to a cocktail glass or small coupe. Garnish with the chocolate-dipped sprig of mint.

Frozen banana ghosts 200g bar white chocolate (broken into chunks), 4 medium-large, ripe bananas, 85g desiccated coconut (you won’t use it all), handful dark chocolate drops One In a small bowl, gently melt the chocolate either in the microwave – in short bursts on high or over a pan of simmering water (make sure the bowl isn’t touching the water). Set aside for a moment while you get the bananas ready. Two Peel the bananas, cut in half, and push a lolly stick into the middle of each piece. Spread the coconut out in a shallow bowl. Line a large baking tray with baking parchment, and make sure there is room for the tray in the freezer. Three Using a pastry brush, coat a banana half in chocolate, letting excess drip away. Sprinkle with plenty of the coconut until coated, then set it on the prepared sheet. Now add two chocolate eyes and a mouth, and if you like, cut a few little eyebrows from the chocolate drops too. Freeze the lollies for at least 4 hrs, and up to a week.

adults only! spooky sips THE POSION APPLE cocktail 2 ounces apple cider, 1 ounce pomegranate juice, 2 ounces tequila, Several chips of dry ice METHOD Combine ingredients with ice in a martini shaker. Shake to mix and strain into a chilled martini glass. Add dry ice to the glasses just before serving. Makes one cocktail.

Pumpkin spice scones 450g self-raising flour, plus extra for rolling, 100g cold butter, 50g golden caster sugar, 1-2 tsp pumpkin spice (or mix ½ tsp cinnamon, ¼ tsp ginger, a good grind of nutmeg and a pinch of allspice), 200g cooked pumpkin, 80-100ml milk, butter or cream cheese flavoured with a pinch of cinnamon, to serve ONE Heat oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7. Put the flour in a bowl and coarsely grate in the butter (dipping the butter into the flour can make it easier to grate; do this as often as you need). Use a butter knife to stir the butter into the flour, then mix in the sugar and spice. two Add the pumpkin and 80ml milk to the flour mixture and quickly stir everything together. Add more milk if you need to. Three Tip the mixture onto a floured surface and lightly bring together with your hands a couple of times. Roll out until 4cm thick and stamp out rounds with a 7cm cutter. Re-shape the trimmings until all the dough has been used. Place the rounds on a lightly floured baking sheet and brush the tops with any remaining milk. Bake for 10-12 mins until risen and lightly browned.

MAKE A DIFFERENCE THIS OCTOBER This October Macmillan Cancer Support are challenging you to give up drinking alcohol for the month to raise money to help them support even more people facing cancer.

W

hy not Go Sober for October this year? It’s just like a normal month but without the alcohol and hangovers. We all love a glass of wine after work or a beer down the local pub, but a month off will do everyone the world of good. Go Sober for October encourages you to make a difference to the lives of many cancer suffers and their families, as well as adopting a healthier lifestyle yourself by giving up alcohol from 1st to 31st of October.

which can lead to dehydration. Dehydration is what causes many of the symptoms of a hangover. Splitting headaches, sickness, dizziness, dehydration: anyone who’s ever drunk too much knows the consequences and they aren’t pretty! Other than copious amounts of water and a couple of painkillers, the only real cure for a hangover is not drinking in the first place...

It is recommended that to keep the risk from alcohol low, both men and women should not regularly drink more than 14 units a week. If you do choose to drink, it is best to spread your drinks evenly throughout the week.

One thing that most people don’t realise is the negative impact drinking alcohol has on their sleeping habits. More sleep will leave you feeling more energetic, improve your decision making and allow you to have better-eating habits. Giving up alcohol will see you wave goodbye to those bags under your eyes and say hello to that long-awaited beauty sleep.

Many drinkers are unaware that regularly drinking more than 14 units a week can lead to a wide range of longterm health problems, including cancer, stroke, and heart attack. Drinking 14 units of alcohol works out to be roughly 6 pints of beer or 7 glasses of wine. Cutting down on your alcohol consumption, no matter how much you drink, will significantly reduce the risk of long term health issues that could arise.

Saving money is one of the best reasons to Go Sober for October. We all love a pint and a catch up with friends on Friday after work, but let’s face it... it’s never just the one pint of beer or glass of wine, is it? Most of the time it turns into a night out on the town where you stumble in the door at 4 am. And then you check your bank account on Sunday night to realise you’ve spent £80 on a few rounds that you don’t even remember!

Macmillan Cancer Support provides support to cancer patients from the moment they’re diagnosed, through their treatment and beyond, they are right there with you, offering emotional, physical and financial support. Going sober for October will help change the lives of many people suffering from cancer and their families, all while benefitting your own health too.

A month away from drinking will give you time to focus on yourself, why not invest time into a new hobby? It could be anything, maybe you keep putting off getting fit and healthy, use the money you’re saving to join your local gym. You could learn a new skill, do yoga, read a book or join a sports club; anything you do will be more productive than drinking.

Just think how amazing it’ll feel to go 31 days without a dreaded hangover. Alcohol makes you urinate more,

32

But remember all along that going sober for October is helping millions of cancer patients receive vital support from Macmillan Cancer Support - you are making a huge difference to the lives of people who need it most, all whilst improving your own health in the process. And you might even find that the positive effect reduced alcohol consumption has had makes you drink less once the month is over.

To find out more about Go Sober For October head to www.gosober.org.uk where you can register and help raise the funds to support cancer patients. If you want to find out other ways to help fundraise then go to 691007 www.macmillan.org.uk. Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk
