THE POWER OF TRUSTS The power of Trusts is immense. Trusts can protect your property, your cash savings, your holiday home and other assets from unforeseen eventualities.

I

t will also ensure that the people named in your will do in fact inherit. Take the example of Mr & Mrs P who left everything to each other in their wills and then to their children on second death. Mrs P died and Mr P inherited, but years later Mr P became very lonely and disgruntled with one of his own sons and a step child and cut them out of his will, something Mrs P would not have wanted.

A Trust in the wills costing about £200 each could have put her major assets, which in this case was their house into trust for the children to inherit after second death. Trusts are very powerful tools and freestanding trusts outside the will can protect assets from being lost for

all sorts of unforeseen eventualities, provided they are not taken out when any of these events is a foreseen eventuality. These are called Life Interest Trusts, and a person’s property and savings can be put into them to be protected while still giving flexibility to downsize and spend any excess money. Life Interest Trusts can also save probate costs which can be substantial, and make dealing with the estate easier for the executors as property put into this type of trust does not have to wait for probate. Trusts can also be used to reduce inheritance tax substantially, and in some cases remove it. The power of trusts is immense.

‘One of Plymouth’s Hidden Gems’

H

“

idden gem” is one of those cliché descriptions that sometimes does fit the bill.

The Zuzimo! Restaurant and Tapas Bar is one of those cases. Tucked away on a corner of Plymouth’s Vauxhall Street it is not quite on the Barbican and not quite in the City Centre but it’s definitely worth finding your way there.

We were looking for a substantial snack rather than a meal when we came across this particular hidden gem. The Tapas menu was extensive and included some vegan options but we were tempted by the lunch menu offering a two course lunch for only £7.95 and an extra course for an extra pound, so the Tapas had to wait for another day.

My wife Anne opted for the fish and chips, intrigued by the polenta batter while I went for a chicken penne. The fish was fresh and not overcooked, obviously prepared to order and the batter was something else; the lightest, crispest batter I’ve tasted in a long time. The chips were top notch too, none of your nasty, soggy chips as Philip Madoc said to Capt Mainwaring.

The same goes for the penne. The pasta was nicely done, again fresh

and not kept warm somewhere and the sauce was the kind that makes you ask for a bit of bread so as not to waste a drop of it.

Zuzi and Mo are a wife and husband team who took over the restaurant a few months ago and completely refurbished it.

We finished off with a highly indulgent honey cheese cake, feeling a bit guilty as we’d only intended to get a snack.

Mo is one of those Mediterranean hosts who likes to make his customers feel like guests. We ended up with a tour backstage.

The cooking area is one of the cleanest I’ve seen. I didn’t try them but Anne says the toilets are clean enough to eat in. The whole restaurant is light, bright and airy.

The tables are well spaced so you you don’t feel crowded.

All of the ingredients are fresh and locally sourced where possible. Somerset is the longest journey for those of you interested in food miles.

The house wine was light and fruity, just the right thing for a sunny but slightly chilly spring day.

Our quick snack took up a couple of hours and ended with a real barista coffee prepared

by Mo. Definitely a place to go back to and certainly worth the search if you don’t know the area.

THINKING OF GETTING A PET? Like humans, pets are living much longer these days and anyone contemplating acquiring one really needs to think ahead.

I

t’s no longer a rarity for cats to live past eighteen years, and at Plympton’s own Woodside Animal sanctuary, some elderly residents are well past that and still enjoying life to the full. Dog life spans can vary enormously, and size really does matter where longevity is concerned. Generally speaking, the bigger the dog, the fewer years you will have with it, while the little breeds, especially terriers, can still be lively at twenty plus. Rabbits are a particular problem at Woodside as they’re an easy retail purchase and their everyday needs are terribly misunderstood. Frequently chosen as a child’s first pet, many can exceed nine years of age and all too often, rapidly outgrow a youngster’s interest. As well as those handed over, the sanctuary has also cared for many dumped in the street or the moors and even sealed in boxes awaiting the dustcart.

Whatever you fancy, Woodside strongly

recommends doing some serious research before adding any pet to your family. Take time to consider all aspects of the commitment involved, and ask a local vet about the expense your choice is likely to generate.

If you want a dog, remember that there are hundreds of known genetic problems with pedigrees and the craze for designer crosses such as cocker-poos does not wipe that out. In fact, you may end up with the health problems from both breeds.

If the beauty and grace of a Husky type

“Woodside strongly recommends doing some serious research before adding any pet to your family” has captured your imagination, be aware that they are being signed over to shelters in increasing numbers. As a rule they do not make good family pets. They are known for shedding a lot of hair, annoying neighbours by howling, their talent for escaping and ignoring commands and sadly, for chasing and killing small pets.

Of course, there are always rescue pets needing new families, and any adopted from Woodside are neutered, micro-chipped, vaccinated and flea/worm treated plus, Woodside will always take its pets back if necessary, even years later.

Plymouths local animal charity needs your help!

Gables Farm Cats’ and Dogs’ Home has been helping the region’s dogs and cats since 1907. We look after some 1000 cats and dogs every year. We either rehome or re-unite them with their owners and provide constant veterinary care and attention to all of them during their stay with us. We enforce a strict non-euthanasia policy, which means no healthy animal in our care is put to sleep unless they are seriously ill and suffering or too dangerous to rehome. Some dogs and cats stay with us for a long time but we never give up hope of finding them a new loving home no matter how much it costs! We rehome animals all over Devon, Somerset, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. We receive no Government funding so totally rely on the generosity and support of the public through donations and legacies.

Easter Fair and Dog Show– Saturday 19th April We will be holding an Easter Fair and Dog Show at Gables Farm on Saturday 19th April. The fair will start at 11am. There will be lots of stalls, refreshments, games, a tombola, a raffle and a family dog show.

Easter Baking This season is the perfect time to enjoy baking with the kids. There are so many great recipes that are easy enough for the little ones to get involved with. Take some inspiration from these great ideas! They would even make a great gift alternative to the traditional Easter Egg.

Easter Rocky Road Makes 8 - 10 YOU WILL NEED: • 200g good quality milk chocolate • 75g good quality dark chocolate • 25g unsalted butter • 50g mixed pink & white marshmallows, cut into small pieces • 50g shortbread biscuits, cut into small pieces • 100g macadamia nuts • 25g raisins

1 Line a 3cm-deep, 8 x 25cm bar pan with plastic wrap. Place the milk and dark chocolates with the butter in a heatproof bowl over a pan of simmering water (don’t let the bowl touch the water), and stir until melted.

2 Stir marshmallows into chocolate with remaining ingredients.

3 Spread into pan, chill in fridge for 2 hours or until hard. Slice in the pan.

M & M Cookies Makes 24 YOU WILL NEED: • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened • 3/4 cup brown sugar • 1/4 cup granulated sugar • 1 egg • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 2 cups all purpose flour • 2 teaspoons cornstarch • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 2 cups M&Ms or chocolate chips

1 Preheat oven to 350 F. 2 Cream together butter and sugars until smooth.

Add egg and vanilla and blend in.

3 Stir in flour, cornstarch, baking soda and salt. Stir in M&Ms. 4 Drop by tablespoons onto a lightly greased baking sheet and bake for 9-11 minutes, until golden brown around the edges.

These recipes make perfect Easter gifts that are guaranteed to make anyone smile! Just wrap in tissue paper or store in a glass jar.

They will keep for about 5 days.
