Editor’s Note... I should probably start off with a quick introduction – I’m Melissa and I’m the new Editor of Plympton Community Magazine! This is the first issue under my reign (which is powered by sunshine and coffee). It’s been packed out as always with great, local businesses offering some fantastic deals to our readers. We live by the clock, and we’re now on British Summer Time! Hopefully we’ve all recovered from that lost hour of sleep and, although we still have a few chilly days ahead, we can start enjoying the longer evenings and the coming warmer weather. The first barbecues of the year tend to get fired up around now, hopefully not under the protection of a giant pub-garden umbrella. Entrepreneurship is a hot topic this issue! We spoke to Plymouth University about their Entrepreneurship programmes, which you can read about on page 26. We also met Chris Kallis Solicitors and heard about the business’s journey to success, which you can read on page 18.

PLYMPTON BASED MANUFACTURER
EXPANDS FOR 2016
R
ight Price PVCu, based in Plympton’s Newnham Industrial Estate, has kicked off to a booming start in 2016. Since OM last spoke to Sarah and Travis back in September, the business has grown bigger and better and they tell us their exciting plans for the near future. Building on the well-known Right Price name, which has been built up over nearly three decades, Sarah and Travis are now entering their 4th year of ownership, developing the firm to one of the South West’s leading manufacturers & installers of windows and doors & conservatories. This year will see Right Price moving over to manufacturing their products with Eurocell profile; the market leader for energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, security and style. The move will enable Right Price to offer their customers even more choice, with greater colour options, and window and door styles to suit every home. Eurocell is also the UK leader in PVCu sustainability, and has recently invested £3m in a new recycling plant. Right Price is looking forward to working alongside the profile provider to develop products, whilst supporting the drive for an affordable zerocarbon future.
Right Price is also excited to be launching fantastic new Eurocell products this month. The first is the highly anticipated Modus the UK’s first fully integrated window and door system. Modus features a clean and contemporary look, together with slimmer sight lines and leading thermal performance, to offer a fantastic alternative to aluminium and timber products at considerably better value.
“We are passionate about increasing employment and helping Plymouth’s economy” The second launch is the Aspect Bi-Fold door, with it’s modern, sleek elegance, creating an opening up-to six metres wide, with a low threshold for easy access that makes a stunning difference to maximise light and space. The door is the first bi-fold of any material on the UK market to gain BBA certification,

brings security to the forefront by setting out standards for doors and windows in all new residences. Under the new standards, all new doors and windows should be made to a design that has been shown, by test, to meet the security requirements of PAS24. Right Price does so with their high security Yale locking systems, as standard for both new build and all residential properties.
and also Secured By Design status by the Association of Chief Police Officers. The Right Price team has also recently expanded to include two new expert fitters, as well professional Installation Manager to help achieve maximum quality control, and keep focus firmly on customer satisfaction at every stage of the job. “We are passionate about increasing employment and helping Plymouth’s economy” says former Royal Marine Travis. To stay ahead of competitors, in quality, innovation and value, Right Price have also recently invested £100,000 in new state-ofthe-art, fully automated machinery. Sarah explains that “We will be able to keep up with the ever increasing demand, offer highly competitive prices, fast turn-around, whilst keeping 100% accuracy, as well as developing future products.” Right Price are also pleased to announce they have recently achieved the status of ‘Approved Guardian Roof installer’. Guardian roofs are solid roofs used to replace existing conservatory roofs and keep in heat, providing a more cost-effective alternative to having an extension built. These are proving to be hugely popular in the area, with happy customers raving about the transformation it’s made to their home. Customers can also be sure that they are in the best hands possible, as the business adheres to the new Document Q - which is the latest addition to Building Regulations and
Along with high-security systems, Right Price uses Pilkington K glass - the market leader, allowing units to obtain optimal solar heat gain, thermal insulation and light transmission to provide the highest Window Energy Rating (WER) performance, reducing energy bills and the use of artificial lighting.
“We will be able to keep up with the ever increasing demand, offer highly competitive prices, fast turn-around, whilst keeping 100% accuracy, as well as developing future products” With big plans for this year, Right Price is looking to relocate to new larger premises this year to allow for further expansion, and also grow their team with new members to provide ongoing excellent customer service to a growing client base. With strong connections to the local community they also continue to maintain discounts for NHS workers, service personnel and OAPs. By looking at the continuous positive testimonials, it’s easy to see why homeowners and trades people are continuing to choose Right Price for their UPVC double glazed windows, doors, conservatories, guttering and more, and that Right Price is looking forward to a bright future in the South West for many more decades to come. Celebrates its 40th Birthday! Beacon Blinds is celebrating 40 years in business this year!
T
he local business, which is the sister company to Beacon Electrical, was started back in 1976 when founder, Chris Higgins, was still working in the Plymouth Dockyard. He began measuring and fitting blinds in the evenings for extra money to help support his very young family and soon realised that this had great potential, so he set out on the path of running his own business. It was a ‘proper’ family business set-up, with his wife, Sue, helping to develop the business into curtains and soft furnishings, while still looking after three young sons.
headrails are the best quality you can get.” They have also added window film and shutters to their portfolio over the last few years. “Window film has generally been used in commercial property for years to offer a low-cost way of taking the glare out of the bright sunshine, and indeed, save money on heating bills with its reflective qualities.”
The access to the Beacon Blinds showroom is to the rear of the car park at the Beacon Park site, opposite the Electrical shop entrance. Here you can find a rainbow of colour choices and hundreds of different patterns and materials to make the blinds your own. The red velvet curtains and brown-patterned 70’s style roller blinds are now far gone, and Beacon Blinds has thrived in the larger premises that both Beacon Blinds and Electrical moved into in 1981, on Beacon Park Road. Beacon Blinds has grown into one of the largest blinds companies in Plymouth and very likely has the largest showroom in Plymouth, with a great selection of different styles of blinds and awnings to suit any home. They are the exclusive partner for Luxaflex blinds in South Devon, who are probably the market leaders in quality made-tomeasure blinds, with some stunning fabrics and great new designs which would add the wow factor to a home. Alexandra Boardman Chartered Legal Executive
Controlling or Coercive Behaviour By Alexandra Boardman Following on from her previous article, Alexandra Boardman from The Family Law Company looks at further aspects of controlling or coercive behaviour. Part Two Clients say how they spent the early weeks or months of a new relationship telling their partner about their past, only to find this information becomes a weapon used by the abuser. Many of us post information about ourselves on social media sites - for someone with a coercive and manipulative personality, this is like winning the jackpot. When you realise you no longer want to be in the relationship, coercive and controlling behaviour can take a nasty turn. After all, if you try to take control away from someone who wants to be in control, they will want to find a way to take back that control by using what they know. Thanks to significant pressure from domestic abuse support services and agencies, the Government has recognised this behaviour and has legislated about it. In December 2015, the Home Office brought in statutory guidance and a framework for the Police and Crown Prosecution Service regarding controlling or coercive behaviour in an intimate or family relationship. This legislation plugs the gap between stalking and domestic abuse related offences. The offence of controlling or coercive behaviour is constituted by behaviour on the part of the perpetrator which takes place “repeatedly or continuously”. The victim and the alleged perpetrator must be “personally connected” at the time the behaviour takes place. The behaviour must have had a “serious effect” on the victim. This means the behaviour has either caused the victim to fear violence will be used against them either on “at least two occasions”, or it has had a “substantial adverse effect on the victims’ day to day activities”. The alleged For more information please visit: www.thefamilylawco.co.uk Email: enquiries@thefamilylawco.com
perpetrator must have known that their behaviour would have a serious effect on the victim, or the behaviour must have been such that he or she “ought to have known” it would have that effect. Controlling behaviour: a range of acts designed to make a person subordinate and/or dependent by isolating them from sources of support, exploiting their resources and capacities for a personal gain, depriving them of the means needed for independence, resistance and escape and regulating their everyday behaviour. Coercive behaviour: a continuing act or a pattern of acts of assault, threats, humiliation and intimidation or other abuse that is used to harm, punish, or frighten their victim. Types of behaviour include: isolating a person from their friends and family; depriving them of their basic needs; monitoring them via online communication tools or spyware; depriving them of access to support services; repeatedly putting them down; enforcing rules and activities that humiliate, degrade or dehumanise them; financial abuse including control of finances; threats to kill or hurt; threats to a child; threats to reveal or publish private information; criminal damage; rape; preventing a person from having access to transport. These behaviours can also be present within domestic abuse. Where these behaviours have been reported it may be that evidence can be obtained and relied upon to meet Legal Aid guidelines if you are seeking Legal Aid when applying for or responding to any family law proceedings. For more information about Legal Aid eligibility, please do not hesitate to contact us to discuss this in more detail or visit the Home Office website www.gov.uk/check-legal-aid. For advice and guidance on these or other aspects of family law, contact Alexandra or one of her colleagues at The Family Law Company. PLYMOUTH’S BEST BUSINESSES
C ris Kallis Solicitors
We do not encourage anyone to pursue a claim without reasonable prospects,” explains Chris. “We provide a proper service as we are 100% dedicated to the client as the vast majority of people have a genuine grievance.” “They are mostly interested in getting good treatment and have a resolution for their symptoms, especially for the more seriously injured, and that means more to them than the compensation itself.” It’s a far cry from Chris’ first profession in the catering industry. Born into a large family, and growing up in Plymouth, he left school with no qualifications before going into the hospitality business.
T
he story behind solicitor Chris Kallis’ meteoric rise is not only fascinating but one which OM finds to be quite inspirational.
By his mid-thirties he was running his own cafeteria in the city centre, when he began to get chatting with a regular patron, Arthur Madison, who would come in every Wednesday afternoon.
The personal injury specialists have a strong track record of success spanning more than 15 years with Chris at the helm throughout.
Chris recalls that Arthur was always reading (mainly about history) and soon the two engaged in conversations about careers and degree courses.
We are provided with coffees and ushered into the conference room. Tom, the photographer, admires the Van Gogh prints on the walls as he sets about preparing his lenses, camera and flash for the accompanying photoshoot. Chris appears through the door, clutching paperwork, before settling himself in a seat at the head of the table. Shortly afterwards, he is surrounded by his team of loyal staff and Tom starts clicking away with his camera. We soon discover, this is a company which is proud to be different from other personal injury specialists. “We don’t take on any case without seeing the client so we can access the individual and the facts. 18
Arthur had a strong background in academia and, following a number of meetings, he suggested to Chris that he “wouldn’t regret gaining a qualification in either economics or law.” It was a small seed which would eventually blossom into a magnificent tree and benefit thousands of clients. Chris concentrated on catastrophic and brain injury cases, with some cases receiving a pay out of more than one million pounds. With Arthur’s enthusiasm and support, Chris eventually took his law degree at the University of London. Sadly, Arthur has since died and OM asks Chris what he would have made of his protégé’s success.
Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk
AND ENTREPRENEURS Chris becomes quiet and reflective. “I did get the law degree before he passed away and he was delighted,” he says softly. “It was a series of meetings which changed my whole life and he would be pleased for me.” Shortly after graduation, Chris had the opportunity to work as a barrister in London but his heart was firmly in Plymouth and so he returned to the city and soon started work with one of the city’s top legal companies. With two years as a trainee under his belt, Chris found himself at another company heading up a team in its Personal Injuries Claims department. The section rapidly grew from 10 lawyers to 36 and Chris left to set up his own business. That was 16 years ago. Since then, his business has seen exceptional growth with much of it stemming from the loyalty, hard work and dedication of his family members working in the business, his staff and of course company partner, Alistair Tawse, and his wife Sarah Tawse who is a senior solicitor at the firm.
“We cannot always get justice, but, it is a fair system and, providing you do not abuse it then you can get a good result.” As we head towards the end of the interview, OM asks him to sum up his business success in a succinct sentence. “Dedicated, thorough and dynamic,” is his reply. These three words are the crucial ingredients which have assured his ability, together with all of his staff, to help families across Plymouth to gain support and guidance from one of the city’s leading experts in Personal Injury claims. They are the three words which would surely provide a smile for Arthur Madison – the man who would buy coffee from Chris back in the eighties and spotted the real potential in him which would go on to help so many other people.
It’s a busy time for Chris. The company has approximately 500 cases a year (which he says is not a conservative estimate). Outside of running the business, he is also President of the Rotary Club of Plymouth and heavily involved in aiding local charities - his focus on helping people extending far beyond the walls of his office. “Business is like life, you have to be people focused,” he explains. “It’s not about making money. It’s about running it professionally to provide a good product for the client.” Honesty is a big part of Chris’ mantra and so part of his firm’s work is about not raising client expectations. After all, they cannot guarantee the desired result in every case they examine but he does have tremendous faith in the legal process.

THE FUTURE OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP
AT PLYMOUTH UNIVERSITY Plymouth University is constantly growing and evolving to cater to everchanging industries, and their Business School is no exception. OM spoke to Dr Emily Beaumont, Discipline Group Leader for Entrepreneurship, about what their innovative, new courses can offer.
W
e arrived at their colourful Futures Entrepreneurship Centre in Mast House, situated overlooking Sutton Harbour. Plymouth Business School is getting bigger, particularly now they’ve seen the successful launch of the undergraduate Business Enterprise and Entrepreneurship programme; a Two Year Fast Track degree that enables you to study whilst starting or running your own business.
Mast House
Emily told us that, “Even in its first year it’s been so successful, not only in terms of recruitment but in terms of the standard and quality of the students and their work. We’re just so pleased and keen to let everybody know about it.” Some students already have a business plan, or even a business set-up and running when they join the programme, whilst others come with aspirations of being self employed. Whatever stage in their business development they are at, they can bring their business ideas to the programme and apply them within their assessments. Funding can help those businesses start-up or develop further. Emily explained how, “One of the special things about this programme is that it’s designed to support students in setting up and running their own business, and they get the opportunity to pitch for up to £1,500 worth of funding to do this that they don’t have to pay back.” 26
Some students however, don’t have Dr Emily Beaumont plans to start their own business, but the course still works for them. “The degree isn’t just for people who want to start their own business.” The degrees also explore intrapreneurship, which is the idea of having those entrepreneurial capabilities and tendencies but applying them in a large organisation. For anyone who is unsure on whether they want to spend lots of years studying, they’ll be pleased to hear that this course has been designed as a two-year fast-track. Not only does this mean that a student would save £9,000 (being the cost of one year’s undergraduate study) but they can crack on
Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk
and leave with a qualification much faster than someone studying in the traditional three-year format. A work placement and trip abroad is even fitted in to the two-years to enhance study. Then, back at university, real-life consultancy projects called Inspiring Futures give students the opportunity to work on a live brief from a variety of clients, solving problems for them or working on social media strategies, market research, etc. Businesses can get involved in Inspiring Futures for free, receiving a good quality piece of work after liaising with the students involved. It’s proven to be a very professional and effective way of working. This all goes alongside the academic learning which is provided at the university. “What we’ve built here is the whole package.” Sophie White, a student on the Business Enterprise and Entrepreneurship course, told us: “My experience of Business Enterprise and Entrepreneurship has been incredible. It is led by an enthusiastic, dedicated course leader and supported by a whole team of inspiring, supportive individuals who are happy to help students wherever they can.” It is a full-time degree and students should expect to dedicate a lot of time to their studies, but there is still time to have that all important student life and many already prove that it can be done whilst working part-time, and some even do all of this with children in tow. Business Enterprise and Entrepreneurship also offers mature students the opportunity to get back into education and it’s fast becoming a very viable option for those with families, those who are older, and for those who have been in the workplace for many years. Norman Blandford is the eldest person currently on the course at age 55, and he’s really pleased with his
experience so far. “As a returning learner I was naturally anxious as to what kind of experience Plymouth University could offer me. I have been very pleasantly surprised with both the individual tuition and general management of our course. The subjects are relevant, diverse and can be exciting with guest speakers and externally set projects, this course is delivering its promise.” Another reason that the two-year set-up works so well, is because the faculty also offer some great postgraduate Masters degrees. These are one-year long and cost less than the undergraduate degree (currently £5,400 for 2016/17 for home and EU students), meaning that a student could potentially achieve both an undergraduate and postgraduate qualification in the same time but spending less money than if they were to take the standard three year route. The postgraduate Masters degrees on offer are MSc Entrepreneurship and MSc Entrepreneurship and International Development. These are suitable for those who already have an undergraduate degree, who have an interest in developing an understanding of the factors that inform strong entrepreneurial business decisions or helping a new generation of entrepreneurs transform lives and empower communities. Being Plymouth born-and-bred herself, Emily hopes to see more local students on the undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the next academic year. With a strong supportnetwork set up, funding available and plenty to learn, there is no longer a good reason to shun university education. It’s a chance to further skills and knowledge, whilst gaining valuable experience. “It’s all possible.”

DIAL A CAB
33-33-33
Onward and Upward for New Local Taxi Company Merger! In July 2015, Plymcabs joined forces with one of the largest operators in Plymouth, Crownhill Taxi Services Ltd. Crownhill Taxis established itself in the 1950s and has been operated by Andy Wheeler and family since 1994 under the name Dial A Cab 33-33-33. The reason behind this merger was due to the overall running costs in sustaining a small local office with minimal driver coverage. The group now boasts over 106 drivers giving the firm the man-power it needed, whilst still maintaining strong local client values. New owner Andy Wheeler said, “It’s been one of the best businesses decisions I’ve ever made The company is growing stronger every day, we have still kept the existing management team and we have still kept the same client values that Plymcabs have always been known for. The company is one of the largest suppliers of contract work to Plymouth City Council and all the drivers have

enhanced DBS checks. In addition to this the company also operate a fleet of executive hire Mercedes and executive people carriers for airport runs or special occasions, as well as specialist disabled vehicles. Cliff, the previous owner of Plymcabs, said “I’m very pleased with this merger. The company can now move forward and upward as I’ve always wanted it to, including the ability to now be able to take Debit and Credit card payments in all the cars, and the company is still locally focused with the back up and support of a larger fleet”. Despite certain rumours Plymcabs categorically state that the number 77-7777 will not be ceasing operations and will still continue to be the main number to call for any booking along with the additional Dial A Cab number of 33-33-33.

Save the Plympton Fields By Councillor Glenn Jordan
As many readers will recall I do seem to have a bee in my bonnet about how Plymouth City Council want to sell off the fields in Plympton to build houses on them.
Yet over this time the same concerns, have been constantly raised at every juncture by the local community, which in my view have not been properly addressed. Before you start saying, “But Glenn people do need homes”, I understand, as well as support, the fact that we need more houses in Plymouth, but we also need to provide the infrastructure to support these new homes. If the council approved all of the sites currently being talked about for Plympton we could see at least a 1000 new homes, which will worsen the current problems we are facing.
Glenn’s copy of the Planning Application
34
Over the last couple of years, we have seen children unable to get places in Plympton Primary School and if you try to get an

appointment to see a Plympton GP you could be waiting around 3 weeks, not to mention the impact on our roads and the lack of public open space these developments will bring. We need green, open spaces where our children can play in safety, where people can exercise or even just walk their dogs. I am aware that some plans around schools are being worked on, but these would only address the current situation we are facing and will be adding to the chaos at the school gates as more parents will be forced to drive their children to school as they will have to travel further. As for health provisions, I am still awaiting to hear of any plans to improve capacity.
“
We need green, open spaces where our children can play
“
Over the last 18 months or so we have seen 280 houses proposed for the fields next to Boringdon, which is currently going to appeal after being refused. We have had Chaddlewood Fields and Glen Road Park consulted on for change of use and both recommended to be sold for housing, this in turn has led to a planning application being submitted for 190 homes on Chaddlewood Fields, which is currently going through the Planning Proposes.
We need to balance communities, with schools, doctor’s surgeries, even shops and jobs, to meet the needs of those that live in that community. We need a balanced approach to addressing this, not what we currently seem to have which is - let’s just build the houses and hope the other issues sort themselves out.

CONSIDERING MAKING A WILL OR LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY BUT WORRIED ABOUT THE COST?
SPECIAL OFFER FOR OM READERS
Wills The majority of adults in this country have no valid or an outdated Will. As a result, seven out of ten people who die leave their loved ones with what may be unnecessarily complicated problems, at a time when they are least able to deal with them. Please see our special offer for straightforward Wills. Lasting Powers of Attorney A lasting power of attorney gives someone you trust the legal authority to make decisions on your behalf, if either you’re unable to in the future or you no longer wish to make decisions for yourself and is particularly important to consider for people recently diagnosed with any progressive illness, as making a Power of Attorney now will provide peace of mind and an ‘insurance policy’ for future years.
