Editor’s Note... We’re really looking forward to Summer here at Plympton Community Magazine, and we’re hoping that the sun shines on Plymouth throughout May. It’s hay fever season though, and some of us are already noticing the pollen in the air! Turn to page 29 for some advice and tips if you’re suffering. On a brighter note, the sunshine and longer evenings have us thinking about music festivals! Why not take the kids along? On page 10 we discuss the best festivals for families and how to make a weekend of camping and live music a success for you and the kids. As always, this issue is full with great local businesses, offering excellent service and exclusive deals for our readers. Enjoy!

Neighbourhood Policing
Say “NO” to Doorstep Traders At this time of year unscrupulous traders will go door to door offering their services to carry out exterior house and garden maintenance. Some are legitimate but unfortunately not all. Many can be extremely persuasive, forceful and or aggressive in persuading you to part with your money. Unfortunately we are aware of two people that have been duped in recent weeks, neither of whom contacted Police as they were too embarrassed to do so. If you have any concerns please contact police or Trading Standards.
We suggest: • • • • •
• •
Politely but firmly say NO to their offer. Do not let them into your property. If you feel threatened in any way phone police 999. If you are able to discretely take descriptions/ vehicle details this would be extremely helpful to police. You must be given a Notice of Cancellation of two weeks for work. This is a essentially a cooling off period in case you change your mind about the work you are considering. Any paperwork should have a company name and address with telephone numbers on it. Make some phone calls to check these out. Remember: if it is cheap then it is probably too good to be true.
NEED A BUSINESS YOU CAN TRUST? All the businesses registered with the Plymouth City Council Buy with Confidence scheme have been vetted and approved by Trading Standards to ensure that they operate in a legal, honest and fair way. PROTECTING YOURSELF ONLINE There are a couple of measures you can take to protect yourself whilst online: Change your passwords at least every 3 months and never use the same password for different accounts. (If a company is hacked the hackers could use the information they steal to try and access other accounts you have). At the very least always use a different password for online banking. Never give your credit card details or bank account information via email Don’t open attachments or emails from people you don’t know. Don’t become online friends with people you don’t know. Never arrange to meet someone in person you’ve met online. If anything you see or read online worries you, report it. Avoid giving out personal details on the Internet especially to people you don’t know. These could include your name, home address or telephone number.

Kids + FESTIVALS Music festivals were once reserved for young people, serving as an opportunity to leave responsibility at home for the weekend. But over the years, these lively events have started to cater more and more to children and families.
S
ome people would think it’s mad to cart along a baby to a hectic, noisy festival, but for parents who’ve spent their youth enjoying the thrill of live music in huge arenas, it’s not necessarily a pastime which needs to be given up. Parents might need to take along a little more than a crate of booze and a cheap tent, but being prepared for every eventuality will make the entire weekend a lot easier on both you and the kids. If the thought is a bit daunting, take your little ones on a summer camping trip to let them try out their sleeping bags and experience the fun of living in a tent. If they’re already excited by the prospect of camping, introducing them to a festival won’t be so difficult.
Festivals big and small offer separate campsite areas for families, and with that, plenty of kids entertainment. Although you shouldn’t expect to be dragging the little ones over to the main stage to watch the headline acts at night, there are always great artists on in the daytime and the smaller stages and market areas have lots to offer. Of course, the weather will often decide how much fun you’re going to have. It’s a risk you take when booking a festival, but if you have kids who aren’t bothered by a bit of mud and are the sort who like to climb trees (and if you’re the same) then go for it, because the sun could shine and it could be the best weekend of your summer.

The entire experience won’t be the same as if you were a teenager, but you’ll enjoy it in a completely different way

Pack plenty of rugs and blankets. They’re good to chuck on the ground for a rest, as well as keeping the kids warm.
•
Give the kids their own torches or light-up toys to carry at night. They’ll find them fun and it will help other people to see them.
•
Write your contact number on their arm, or attach it to their clothes in case they get lost. Alternatively, the name of your campsite can be helpful.
•
Buy ear defenders for babies to protect their ears from loud music. Older children might like to use ear plugs for the same reason, and to help them sleep if the campsite is noisy.
•
Put a big flag on top of the tent to help older children find their way back.

PLYMOUTH’S BEST BUSINESSES In this month’s Best Businesses and Entrepreneurs, we speak to Matthew Johns, Managing Director at the award-winning Mortgage Advice Bureau about how they became the best in the Southwest
M
atthew Johns has good cause to be happy. He has just celebrated his 40th birthday and in the same week his team at the Mortgage Advice Bureau have won a top award. He holds two trophies in his hands. One is in national recognition of the excellence of their parent company, and the other is the key focal point for the team, who are based on North Hill in Plymouth. The prestigious Regional Mortgage Broker of the Year 2016 award from the ESTAS was given to them based on their customer ratings and testimonials. It means they are the best in the Southwest when it comes to what they do and it’s the customers praise which earned them the award, which was presented at a glittering event at The Grosvenor in Hyde Park, London, in April this year.
in his office with a cup of tea. The view across North Hill is incredible – a huge tree acts as an immediate landmark with the rest of the busy street neatly nestled behind it.
It’s a big deal. Matthew shows us the photos from the night. It certainly was very swish with a number of ice sculptures to mark the occasion. We head up the staircase and settle ourselves
Growing up in Devon, it was his childhood which would spur Matthew to exceptional success in his chosen field of finance. He realised, at a young age, the importance of self-belief in everything we do. By 1995, Matthew had joined a local bank where he learnt a lot about the world and also how finances work. He was a 19 year old with aspirations and a desire to do what was always going to be best for the customer.
It may sound like a cliché, but it was a belief which has seen his repeat custom grow over the years and, in particular, James Webster, Toni Dunstan, Jessica Bailey, Matthew Johns, Katie Quick, Jade Jones & Mark John has seen the expansion of the Mortgage Advice 14

AND ENTREPRENEURS Bureau from just three people in 2011 to 21 advisors and eight office staff today. It is part of a franchised network and Matthew says it’s now the largest mortgage broker in Devon, Cornwall and Somerset. The key to the success of the team is its breadth of experience provided by its staff, who use more than 90 companies to gain the best deals for the client. We take a break from scurrying down notes and ask what else has ensured success for Matthew’s business. “Hard work, thinking differently and remembering who the client is,” he answers. “When I say ‘thinking differently’ I am not talking about ‘out of the box’ but thinking in a different way to a competitor. “We do not have tunnel vision but think in a broad way. It is very easy for people to become inward focused and not to look outwards. We look to the long term outcome, long term investment and to the bigger picture.” Another crucial factor for any budding entrepreneur is the ability to be able to chat freely with staff. Matthew talks with everyone. From the ground floor (administration) through to the middle floor (advisors) and finally the top deck (which also consists of advisors). It tends to involve talking with a coffee in hand, and it’s this calm and genuinely relaxed attitude which we feel while sitting opposite him in his office. “It’s really important,” he explains. “People need to feel valued.” It’s a mantra which he extends beyond the office and through to the clients themselves. “It’s easy to think about yourself but if you do right by them (the client) it will work for them. Lots of people will think about themselves and not the client which is where it goes wrong for them. “We have the ambition and the desire to do the best we can and we have invested in the infrastructure to be able to do it.
“When you save someone £150 a month then it can be life changing for them, or when you help someone to buy a house when they didn’t think they could, that can really surprise people and it is a really strong feel good factor. “We want to see people through their journey and so build long term relationships which last years and years. We are looking not just for what is right today but for the next thirty years of that person’s life. “I think we have a duty of care as the house is the biggest thing that someone will ever buy.” With such strong moral values, it is perhaps not surprising that Matthew still works with a number of clients who he first met at the start of his career. Away from work and the business, he continues to look out for other people. As we start to pack up our pens and notebooks, Matthew mentions that another aspect to success is the ability to “keep going” and to “enjoy it on the way.”

Alcohol VS Health? With spring just around the corner and lighter evenings upon us, the temptation for a glass of your favourite tipple at the end of a long day is too great for most of us to resist. With studies showing that 30% of adults are drinking above the daily limit, does an alcoholic drink in the evening a few times a week really affect your health?
“A
lcohol is metabolised by a normal liver at the rate of about one ounce (one shot, a normal beer, a regular sized glass of wine) every 90 minutes.” Age, sex and weight can all affect this process. Any amount consumed over that doesn’t get processed immediately, and instead saturates your blood until your liver can process the excess alcohol. The body stores protein, fats and carbohydrates, but it cannot store alcohol, so our systems will act to remove it immediately putting all other processes on hold, including the fat burning process. Alcohol and weight gain usually come hand in hand, with beer bellies and love handles being at the top of people’s weight loss wish lists. Alcohol has no real nutritional benefits, it’s high in calories and when consumed it stimulates insulin production and a spike in insulin levels can lead to an increase in fat storage. A pint of beer contains around 180 calories around the same as a large slice of pizza; just 2 gin and tonics can have the same calories as those found in a burger. Drinking five pints a week (the equivalent of 250 pints a year) consumes the same amount of calories as someone who gets through 221 doughnuts in a year. 24

Just 2 pints a day, 4 days a week can add nearly 75,000 extra calories on to your diet in a year! One pound of fat is 3,500 calories meaning just 8 pints a week could lead to a 22lb weight gain in just 12 months. But alcohol leading to weight gain can have an even greater detrimental effect on your body, than just making your jeans a little tighter.
Weight gained by alcohol is usually stored as fat around the abdomen and it’s this area of fat storage that can give you a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Those of us that drink most days of the week will also increase our risk of developing liver disease. Over a 10 year period, men who drink over 35 units a week and women who drink over 28 units a week have a serious risk of developing liver disease.
So the ugly truth of the matter is alcohol isn’t your body’s best friend and it’s time to think about your health and start making some smarter choices. Make a conscious effort to only drink one night a week, avoid turning to a drink after a bad day at work and go for a walk to clear your head instead. Swap your glass of wine to an apple juice or sparkling water. My top tip is to serve it in a wine glass - the process of drinking it out of your normal glass will actually help you to not notice the change in beverage. When you do have a drink, make smarter choices, swap your regular lager for a shandy, make your wine a spritzer or even try a fruity non alcoholic cocktail. Try to have one alcoholic drink and then a non alcoholic drink, this will cut your consumption by half. Just a few simple changes to your drinking habits could have huge benefits to your long term health.

Managing Hay Fever
Credit: IDJ Photography
this Summer Don’t let hay fever get in your way this summer. Learn how to deal with it effectively so that you can enjoy the sunshine.
D
id you know that, according to the charity Allergy UK, nearly 18 million people in the UK suffer from hay fever. So if you’re still taking cold and flu tablets and wondering why the sniffles won’t shift, you could be part of that statistic. Many of us develop the allergy as a child and prepare for it every year, but it can become a problem at any age, even if you’ve never had any symptoms before. In the UK the main cause is grass pollen, but trees, mould and weeds can also trigger symptoms. The type of pollen you’re allergic to dictates the time of year you’ll suffer most. Trees release pollen earlier on in the year, from March until May. Grass pollen is around from May to August, and weeds and some shrubs release their pollen in the late summer months. Keeping track of when your symptoms appear can help you to work out which type of pollen you’re allergic to. Summer can be ruined as eyes become sore, swollen and jelly-like as they try to keep themselves clean of pollen particles, the nose is left red as the sufferer goes through endless tissues and even the tongue and throat can become irritated. Therefore, it’s not always as simple as taking a one-a-day antihistamine tablet. The main issue with these is that taking one in the morning can mean it wears off by the evening, and then hay fever can hit at night causing problems with sleep. Stronger antihistamines are usually stocked behind
the pharmacy counter, so it’s usually worth asking about them if the standard packs off the shelf aren’t working well enough for you. There’s no need to get a prescription for many of these as your pharmacist can advise you on how to take the tablets, but a doctor can recommend other medicines and remedies to combat severe allergies. If it’s your first year with hay fever, try the standard, one-a-day tablets first as these work well for light suffers, before going on to ask for something stronger if you need it. If you’d rather not take tablets, or if it’s not quite doing the trick, there are other methods to help manage your allergy. The NHS recommends keeping windows shut early in the morning and at night, wearing sunglasses to help keep pollen away from the eyes, washing the hands and face regularly, applying petroleum jelly around the nostrils to trap pollen before it enters the nose and avoiding sitting on the grass if that’s what’s causing the symptoms. They also suggest that sufferers avoid going outdoors when the pollen count is high, but this isn’t particularly good news when you’re keen to get out in the sunshine and enjoy the summer. Being prepared with these various remedies and medicines can help you to enjoy the warm weather with less sneezing to worry about. And remember don’t suffer in silence. Your doctor or pharmacist will be more than happy to help you manage your hay fever when it becomes unbearable.

Anne Shears Solicitor
Divorce and finance – What you need to consider when you decide to separate Anne Shears, a solicitor with The Family Law Company, discusses how the divorce process works in practical terms, in particular looking at the need for advice with regard to finances. No divorce is the same When a couple decide to separate, divorce proceedings are not usually the first thing they think about. Instead, they often need to tackle more pressing practical concerns, such as where each of them is going to live, and what arrangements are to be made for their children. The divorce process It may be helpful for those who are nervous about divorce to understand that the legal side of a divorce is a relatively simple process. A couple must have been married for more than a year before they can divorce. There is only one ground for divorce in England and Wales and that is that a marriage has irretrievably broken down. There are five facts that can be used to show a Court that this has happened. These are: (a) A spouse has committed adultery with a member of the opposite sex and the other finds it intolerable to go on living together. (b) A spouse has behaved in such a way that it would be unreasonable to expect the couple to go on living together. (c) A spouse has deserted the other for a continuous period of two years or more. (d) The couple have been living separately for two years or more and agree to the divorce. (e) A couple have been living separately for five years or more whether or not they agree to divorce. For more information please visit: www.thefamilylawco.co.uk Email: enquiries@thefamilylawco.com 34
The divorce will only be granted by the Court if the Petitioner (the spouse bringing the divorce proceedings) can establish one of these five facts. If the fact on which the divorce is based can be agreed before the Petition is lodged with the Court, this usually means that the divorce will go through more quickly – this can help to keep any conflict or disagreements to a minimum, enabling the separating couple a better chance of amicably agreeing finances and any other arrangements that need to be made. Finance For many people, it is only when they take legal advice about their separation that they realise that a divorce does not just end the marriage but also means that a Court will consider their finances. The Court cannot consider any agreement reached between a married couple about their finances until a divorce has reached the Decree Nisi stage. Good advice about the timing of Decree Absolute and resolving the finances is essential, especially if one or both of the parties intend to remarry. In practical terms, if the Decree Absolute is made but financial claims arising from that marriage are not concluded by Court Order and one of the parties remarries without protecting their ability to make financial claims, they will no longer be able to make claims against their former (unmarried) spouse. However, their former spouse could still make claims against them. When considering whether to take professional advice, remember that the divorce proceedings are only one part of the process. It is equally important to take careful advice to resolve the finances in such a way that puts each person in a position from which they can move on into their respective futures.

The Flexitarian Definition: A person who has a primarily vegetarian diet but occasionally eats meat or fish

any of us have started to question our eating habits, and with veggie cookbooks, alternative health foods in the supermarkets and restaurants catering to various diets, a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle is becoming easier to follow. But it can be difficult to stick to when meat-eating parents invite you over for a roast dinner, when attending a wedding with a meaty set-meal, or if you’re out and about and need something quick to eat on-the-go.
