BUSINESS PROFILE Martin Pomeroy, proprietor of Pomdoo- has over 14 years experience as a wood floor specialist, and his passion is clearly what drives the success of his business forward. Now entering its 5th year, Pomdoo’s ethos is simple: Do what you said you were going to do, when you said you would do it and for the price you said you would do it for!
P
omdoo are specialists in wood flooring. Currently consisting of Martin Pomeroy and Alan Pollard, the pair have a combined experience of over 27 years. Offering professional services in sanding, sealing, installation and repair- Pomdoo have particular interest and expertise in the fitting and maintenance of parquet flooring and period properties. Martin tells us he has always been handy, having previous experience in metal plating for Aerospace in Uxbridge near where he was raised. Martin made the move to Plymouth in 2003; after meeting his wife Alison who is originally from Plymouth and deciding it is in fact better down south!
I didn’t have any doubts because when you break it down it’s simple. If you turn up and do what you said you were going to do, for a price you’ve already quoted- you will always get work. It’s just down to the basics, do as you say! In a short amount of time, Martin acquired his first large job under the Pomdoo name. Through recommendation, Martin was appointed to fit over 12,500 blocks of reclaimed Parquet flooring at Glazebrook House in South Brent. “I was there for 9 weeks. I finished my previous job on a Friday- the following Friday I was on my hands and Knees at Glazebrook fitting over 220 sq meters of parquet!” The Glazebrook House job kick-started Martin’s business- and he soon found himself booked up four weeks in advance.
“
“
I’ve got a passion for turning up to these old rubbish floors, working our magic and turning them into something brand new. It’s a fantastic feeling making that change. My wife complains whenever we go anywhere- I am always looking at the floor. Alan Pollard: who joined Martin in April 2016, has over 13 years experience when it comes to wooden floors. “I didn’t really want to take anyone on to be honest! It hadn’t crossed my mind, but when Alan left his previous
12
role, he had all those years experience and I just had to utilise that”. Not only did Martin gain a new team member, he also made the decision to purchase another Pomdoo van. Moving on to some of the jobs Pomdoo have undertaken, Martin tells us that he has an extensive portfolio of both commercial and residential properties. With the main focus being on residential as this is where Pomdoo’s preference lies- Martin also tells us that they recently completed the fitment of the Trevilder Restaurant floor located in Thurlestone Hotel.
“
“
Fast forward 10 years of working in the wooden flooring industry in the South West, Martin made the bold move to leave and start up his own company in March 2014.“I was essentially leaving a stable job for the unknown; of course it was a risk- especially having a young family at the time”.
If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing right. Everything I do is with an immense amount of pride and attention to detail
Talking through the typical process, Martin explains that even the worst floors can be restored. The room must be clear of all furniture and carpets prior to arrival so the job can be completed as swiftly as possible. Pomdoo then move in with their top of the range sanding machines- which are 98% dust free. “I’ve had numerous people say to me over the years, they’ve sanded their floors and the entire house is covered in dust. That’s because they were more than likely using rental machines which are not top of the range or virtually dust free”. The floor is sanded back down to bare wood, with special attention on all the corners and crevices to ensure a professional job is done.
Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk
- POMDOO Once the floor has been sanded- it is then ready for whatever finish the client would like. Martin explains that usually a Matt varnish is the most popular choicehowever; past clients have chosen to go as dark or as light as they wish!
“
“
A major concern that people have when it comes to work being undertaken in their house, is potential for mess and distraction. Our sanding machines are purpose built for the trade so are 98% dust free
Pomdoo are specialists when it comes to Parquet flooring. Parquet, which originated in France-, is the application of small hardwood or softwood pieces in various geometric shapes. The popularity of Parquet dwindled when carpets were introduced, but resurfaced again in the 1990’s and is now an artistic addition to many modern homes. Martin explains that there is practically no room for error with this type of application! Pomdoo pride themselves in being Parquet specialists and will take on any fitting, repair or restoration no matter how big or small. When it comes to aftercare, Pomdoo link every happy customer to their website or explain how to look after their new floors. “The aftercare is extremely important. The floor has to be left alone for the varnish to dry for at least 48 hours. Only after this period of time can the furniture be put back and even then- we stress the importance of felt pads underneath so not to scratch the surface”. As a modern business, Pomdoo understand the importance of social media to gain maximum exposure. Martin regularly updates the Pomdoo Facebook page to showcase the duo’s hard work. “I try to paint a broader picture of what we do. Facebook is great for visuals. It’s so easy to snap a few pictures on a job and upload them straight away for our followers to see. Pomdoo have just entered their fifth year as a business, and Martin has given himself plenty of scope to expand. “In the near future I would definitely like to have a larger team, another van- so we can take on more jobs with shorter waiting times. Pomdoo currently service areas within a 35 mile radius of Plymouth, travelling as far as Tavistock, Dartmouth,
Parquet Flooring, Sanded and Sealed
Pine Flooring, Sanded and Sealed Looe and Totnes. Martin explains that he doesn’t currently have any plans to reach even further; as he likes being a local, reliable business. Martin would also like to expand the products on offer at Pomdoo, and possibly look into supplying and fitting luxury vinyl tiling. “Vinyl tiles would be a great addition to the services as they reinforce the quality aspect of what Pomdoo offer. Perhaps as a natural progression to the business, we could offer a painting and decorating service to go hand in hand with the floor finishing- we could offer the complete Pomdoo package!” My main focus when I first started was to build the brand first. Pomdoo stands for quality and that’s it first and foremost. When we turn up, you know the job is going to be done right. Martin concludes by telling us “I would hope that we have accomplished that so now I can think about expanding, because our name will stand for something”. Pomdoo offer free no obligation quotations, see their website below for more details.

With warmer months on the horizon, we introduce your 3 new best friends when it comes to cleaning. Even better, these are likely to be hanging around in your kitchen cupboards already!
Keep it Fresh
When Life Gives You Lemons:
Make it Shine with Vinegar:
Stain Banishing Baking Soda:
● Give your Chrome bathroom fixtures a new shine this Spring. Run the cut side of a lemon over taps, fixtures & drains to remove mineral deposits. Rinse & dry thoroughly when you’re done.
● Let the sunshine in through clean windows! Mix equal parts of distilled white vinegar & water & sponge onto your windows & then wipe clean.
● For water rings on your furniture, rub in 1 part white non-gel toothpaste & 1 part baking soda on a dampened cloth. Buff the spot & then take a soft dry cloth to wipe off. Avoid using on unfinished wood, lacquer, or antiques.
● Get ready for summer by scrubbing your BBQ grills & grates with lemon juice & salt to remove any left over debris.
● Say goodbye to carpet stains with vinegar. Rub with a mixture of 2 tablespoons salt dissolved in 1/2 cup white vinegar. Let the solution dry, then vacuum.
● If your cutlery is looking dull & in need of a polish, lemon juice can help spruce up your knives & forks by removing rust spots.
● A sprinke of baking soda acts as a deodoriser for your laundry storage, pet bed, fridge & upholstery.
● Microwave looking grubby? Using a 50/50 combination of vinegar & water, heat the mix for ten minutes in your microwave, until it steams up. Use a cloth to wipe away the moisture & dirt. ● Get stains out of a cutting board or butcher block by rubbing the cut side of a lemon over food stains & smells. For extra cleaning power, sprinkle it with salt or baking soda.
● Remove those tough tea & coffee stains from mugs by soaking them with 1 part baking soda & 2 parts water.
● Kids attacked your walls with crayons? Apply a paste with equal parts of baking soda & water to the area. Once dry, wipe away. Watch out on coloured walls, as these can lose some of their colour.
● Make your glasses sparkle & put one cup full of vinegar in the bottom of your dishwasher before you run the cycle.

BUSINESS PROFILE KenmareHR is a Plymouth based Human Resources consultancy, created by Paul Kennelly to help local businesses with any aspects of employment support required. We meet with Paul to learn a little more about the ins and outs of HR, his background and how his business is doing as it enters its second year in operation.
P
aul Kennelly has over 15 years of senior management experience and 15 years HR Management experience, a Master’s Degree in HR and MCIPD Chartered accreditation. Having started out as a general assistant for a large supermarket chain, Paul worked his way up the ranks to senior management and area HR management and then eventually to go it alone and start his own business. Paul tells us that at first it was the classic case of not really knowing what direction to go in and then finding the job that fitted his personality and skills. “I made my way up the ladder so to speak, so I really know how to work with and manage people within a business at all levels”. After senior management Paul chose to put those skills to a new challenge and so made the move to HR. “In my first role, I was responsible for over 350 employees”. After being appointed as HR Business Partner Paul was responsible for all people related responsibilities across 17 stores; with Store Managers, HR Managers, and over 6300 employees to look after and manage. During his time, Paul has dealt with a wide range of issues- from standard disciplinary situations to some very serious issues within companies. “I have dealt with all manner of issues at all levels within companies ranging from inappropriate use of social media, stealing, collusion, financial misconduct, bullying and harassment, drugs and vexatious claims and worse. Regretfully people can be very creative and there is not a lot that I have not come across and had to deal with. The fundamental overriding principal is to follow the truth, ensure a fair investigation and process is completed and treat everyone involved respectfully. Paul has also been responsible for some large-scale HR related projects including Company start-ups, TUPE’s, redundancies and company restructures that involve a lot of change for people. “The key to successfully managing a large project is communication, engagement. You have to gain the trust of the people you are working with.”
“
“
Whilst working as a HR Manager, Paul completed a Masters Degree in Human Resources at Plymouth University on days off, evenings and weekends, and gained his Chartered status within the HR profession.
18
So then, Paul decided to focus on gaining professional recognition of his experience completing a master’s degree in Human Resources at Plymouth University and gaining MCIPD Chartered status. “Studying for a masters degree, working and balancing family life is certainly no easy task. My wife and children were very understanding!”. Fast forward to February 2015- Paul is in training for an Ironman Triathlon, when he takes a fall on his bike and breaks his collarbone in four places. Ultimately resulting in time off work- Paul utilised his recovery time and built a website demonstrating his HR expertise, “I’d had a plate fitted and a bone graft from my hip so it was a lot of fun trying to type! The work started coming in – only small jobs at first! I worked on my days off and in the evenings.” In February last year, Paul was made redundant. “The writing was on the wall really. The supermarket sector was and still is under a lot of pressure to reduce costs. Paul left his role in February and decided to work full time on the business. “It’s been a busy first year and I have enjoyed it immensely and met lots of great company owners and employees.” KenmareHR offers an extensive range of services, from an adhoc responsive advice and support service with documentation and letters drafted when needed to a tailored retained HR service allowing company owners to focus on their business. Companies may only need a couple of hours or days support per month or even just someone at the end of a phone and we can provide an experienced costeffective solution. KenmareHR can also draw upon a small team of experienced people when needed. “You can draw upon as

KenmareHR offer assistance with recruitment and selection, contracts, policy documents, training and development, resolving people issues and business development advice.
“We can help with recruitment- but we are not a recruitment consultancy! We do much more than that. We will create job descriptions, post job adverts on the relevant platforms across the UK, sift applicants, create interview and assessment methods to ensure the best candidates are selected provide contracts and even complete inductions if needed”. KenmareHR successfully supported the local trampoline park, Super Tramp, with the full on boarding of 25 employees ahead of their opening day. KenmareHR organised the entire process- and understanding the job role was fundamental. KenmareHR understands that each company operates differently, has different terms, different benefits and different needs and expectations from its employees and we make sure that a solid base is built that means the company and its employees understand the working relationship clearly and can focus on the work and the company. Paul also designs and delivers bespoke management and employee training to companies. Ranging from customer service skills, effective communication, leadership development to managing disciplinary training. Each course is adapted to fit the company.
When it comes to keeping up with changes in legislation and regulations- Paul is fully clued up when it comes to the upcoming change in data protection- GDPR. “We can provide guidance and documentation to help companies with GDPR.”
“
“
little or as much support as you need from an experienced team that will ensure your requirements are met, whilst you maintain focus on the success of your business”.
GDPR is the most significant legislation change in over 10 years- and is intended to strengthen and unify data protection for individuals. GDPR comes into effect on the 25th May and Kenmare HR can offer assistance to local businesses to aid compliance.
“This is the most significant change in legislation in over 10 years. I have gained detailed knowledge and a comprehensive suite of documents to support companies with GDPR.” Paul works in partnership with City College Plymouth to deliver their one-day GDPR course, which is essential for anyone who deals with data handling and communication in business. Several years ago, in his spare time, Paul had a creative hobby as a Luthier- and trained to hand build acoustic guitars after learning with one of the top handmade guitar workshops in the country. It’s a great way of slowing you down and making you focus. “There is no time for this at the moment but I’ve still have all the kit in the loft- ready for retirement!” Outside of KenmareHR, Paul has been the Race Director at Instinctive Sports Running Club for 10 years. Based in Plympton the club organises a popular 7-mile cross country race each year in aid of St Luke’s Hospice- 250 runners participate and it raises over £1000 each year. “We have a close affinity with St Luke’s and have supported them for many years.” Looking to the future, Paul would like to expand his business and may need to take on an employee himself soon! “At the moment, I call on experienced people when needed for bespoke work” Paul would like to see KenmareHR grow by offering a good value out sourced professional service. “When it comes to managing employees, I like to help build confidence within companies and try and find solutions that are a good fit with the organisation”.

purple day 2018:
26th march
P
urple Day is the international day for epilepsy awareness, and falls on the 26th of March each year. Created in 2008, it was founded by Cassidy Megan, a young girl from Canada with the condition who sought to get people talking about epilepsy. Not only are people from around the world encouraged to get involved to help raise funds, but the day also works to raise awareness and assure people with epilepsy that they are not alone.
The Condition It is now believed by some researchers that the chance of developing epilepsy is probably always genetic to some extent, with those who start having seizures having always had some level of genetic likelihood to do so. Even if seizures start after a brain injury or other structural change, this may be due to both the structural change and the person’s genetic tendency to have a seizure.
What are seizures? There are 40 different types of seizure, and one person alone can have more than one type. Not all seizures involve jerking or shaking movements, known as convulsions, with some people affected by seeming vacant, wandering around or being confused instead. Despite this, tonic-clonic seizures are perhaps the most recognised type of seizure, categorised by their dramatic convulsions. During these, the person goes stiff, loses consciousness, falls to the floor and begins to jolt. They may look a little blue around their mouth from irregular breathing. Tonic-clonic seizures last a few minutes.
What is purple day? During Purple Day, charities and organisations run events across the globe
22
EPILEPTIC SEIZURE? Remember ACTION: assess Assess the situation – are they in danger of injuring themselves? Remove any nearby objects that could cause injury
CUSHION Cushion their head (with a jumper, for example) to protect them from head injury
time Check the time – if the seizure lasts longer than five minutes you should call an ambulance
identity Look for a medical bracelet or ID card – it may give you information about the person’s seizures and what to do
over Once the seizure is over, put them on their side (in the recovery position). Stay with them and reassure them as they come round
never Never restrain the person, put something in their mouth or try to give them food or drink to help raise awareness and vital funds. The money raised goes towards research into the condition, as well as support for those diagnosed through help lines, support groups and advice resources. To help connect those celebrating Purple Day and coordinate these events, The Anita Kaufmann Foundation set up the Purple Day Every Day page; a website dedicated to the awareness day. This year, the foundation is joining forces with Disney’s Epcot in Florida to bring those with the condition together and turn the Spaceship Earth Purple in recognition of Purple Day events worldwide.

BUSINESS PROFILE Mr Moshahid Ali, owner of Shapla Balti Cuisine, has been awarded a certificate of excellence for three years running. It’s clear to see that Mr Ali’s hard work isn’t going unnoticed- with the team at Shapla having to attend two award ceremonies in one night! We meet with Mr Ali, to learn more about his business and how he got to where he is today.
S
hapla Balti offer authentic Punjabi, Kashmiri, Bengali and Indian Cuisine from their premises based on the Ridgeway, in Plympton. Mr Ali, the owner of Shapla Balti is a hard working and humble restaurant owner who says he wouldn’t be where he is today without his dedicated staff and loyal customers. So, how did it all begin for Moshahid? Mr Ali started working part time in the Indian industry from the young age of 15. “Growing up was great- I was never tied down by anything. I could go wherever I wanted”. At the age of 18, Mr Ali travelled all over the UK working in a number of different restaurants; from Manchester and Birmingham, to Salford and Brixham.
“
“
Moving around the UK at such a young age gave me an advantage. I could learn from the chefs; I could see how people were putting their own adaptations on the same curry dish
By 18 years old, Moshahid Ali was an experienced Tandori Chef, which is an incredible achievement for somebody of that age! Fast forward through many years of hard workMr Ali made the decision to take some well earned time off and move to Bangladesh. “I stayed there for just over a year. It was great to take some time out after working for so long. I spent time with my family, saw some sights and just took the chance to wind down!” Upon returning to the UK in 1995, Mr Ali was offered the position of Tandori Chef at the Plympton Tandori. “I was eventually promoted to a Chef and stayed there for a further 6 months. I then proceeded to move all around Devon expanding my knowledge even further”.
In 1999, Mr Ali opened a Takeaway on Market Road, in Plympton. After 2 years at the Takeaway, Mr Ali made the move to Shapla Balti- and the rest is history! “We have a really great Chef here, so the food is what sets our high standard. We like to adapt; and we Finalists for the best in the South West can only improve by working together.” Because Mr Ali was taught by many different establishments throughout his childhood, himself and the chefs work together to create their own recipes, with their own unique take on classic curry dishes. However, Mr Ali tells us that the Industry isn’t without its problems. “It’s very difficult to find adequately trained chefs nowadays. The new generation are not coming into the curry industry anymore”. Before the tightening of immigration laws, Restaurant owners such as Mr Ali were able to bring in highly skilled chefs along with their wealth of knowledge, to further broaden the cuisine on offer. However, Mr Ali tells us that due to these changes- and a sharp decline in qualified people applying for these job roles, the Indian industry is currently suffering. Fortunately for Mr Ali, Shapla Balti is going from strength to strength, having been awarded a certificate of excellence for the third year running, and a 5 star food hygiene rating. “I would say that loyalty makes us stand out. We had a very loyal customer base from the takeaway that we previously opened on Market Road. As soon as we opened here, all my previous customers chose to follow me and have stayed! Plympton has given us continued support”.

- SHAPLA BALTI CUISINE
“
“
Expanding on Mr Ali’s success; back in November, the Shapla Balti team had to attend two award ceremonies on the same night
Shapla Balti were finalists in the British Takeaway Awards hosted by Just Eat- with a certificate of their achievement on the way. They were also finalists in the British Curry Awards- and were awarded a certificate that is on display in the restaurant today. Out of well over 35,000 Indian restaurants and takeaways in the UK alone, this is no easy feat- so the team must be extremely proud of themselves! “It was a great night, at both of the award ceremonies! Myself and my Business Partner attended the British Curry awards at Battersea Park; and my cousin and another staff member attended the British Takeaway awards, which took place at the Savoy Hotel in Strand, London”. “It was a great achievement for us. When I received the award I just couldn’t stop smiling! We couldn’t have done it without our staff and great customers”. The team at Shapla Balti have no idea who put them forward for nomination, but it was clearly well deserved. Mr Ali tells us that Shapla hosts a number of charity events throughout the year, the most recent being a fundraiser for ‘Fynn’s first footsteps’. Shapla Balti’s customer following is so great, that the restaurant opened for the first time on Christmas day 2016, and again in 2017. “Over the Christmas period we were open every day. In 2016 there was such a
high demand that we decided to open on the big day. I suggested Christmas Turkey but no, everybody wanted traditional Indian food! It was a really great atmosphere, everyone was so happy”.
“
“
“We get a lot of recommendations through word of mouth. This has kept us going for many years and hopefully many more to come!”
We host a lot of parties and events; birthdays, stag nights, hen nights, charity fundraisers- we can accommodate anything!
Looking to the future, Mr Ali tells us that he would love to win multiple awards. “Once you have your first award, you get hungry for more so I would definitely like to work harder and improve on that aspect. I would also love to expand the restaurant- maybe knock through a few walls!” Mr Ali tells us that another restaurant isn’t on the cards just yet, as he can’t guarantee the same level of quality and service in two places. “I am friends with my customers, we have a great atmosphere here and everybody loves to socialise- that’s what makes this place so special”. Moving on to the food, we ask Mr Ali what he recommends on the menu. “The lamb Chun Chun is by far my personal favourite. It’s very spicy!” Lamb Chun Chun is Lamb Tikka cooked with green chillies, green peppers and onions. Mr Ali tells us that Jalfrezi dishes are perhaps his most common recommendations. “At Shapla we don’t want you to be disappointed. If you are looking for advice on any of the dishes, please do ask and we will be more than happy to help!” Shapla Balti is open from 5:30-11:30pm 7 days a week, and deliver to the people of Plympton for free on orders over £25. Shapla may already be your favourite local takeaway, or you may never have tried it- but given this restaurants success over recent years, and becoming finalists in not one but two prestigious awards- it may just be worth a try!

Mothers Day 11th March
M
othering Sunday is a time for celebrating all that our Mums have done for us over the years. As a tradition that dates back centuries, the day was originally marked by the reunion of mothers with their children who would otherwise be working, with this day being designated for children to take time off and visit their families. With more of us living further away from loved ones than ever before, the time we spend with our Mums on Mother’s Day is all the more special, which is probably why many people spend more on Mother’s Day gifts and experiences than any other festivity besides Christmas. From 2016, studies have shown that there has been a rise in Mother’s Day shoppers looking for experiences to gift their mothers over physical products, something which has gone down well with Mums across the UK. According to Google data, millennial moms are looking forward to a chance to rest, while moms ages 35 and up would love a meal with their family. With this in mind, we thought we’d try and wrap up what Mum’s really want this 11th of March.
Restaurants After Valentine’s Day, the most searches related to restaurant reservations happen most often on Mother’s Day, with 55.9% of people planning to purchase a dinner in 2017. Whether you choose to spend the day together and take your mum for lunch, or you can spare the evening for a sophisticated dinner, there are plenty of offers across Plymouth to make use of and make your mum feel special.
Spa Days What better way to help Mom relax than a day at the spa? That seems to be the general thinking, as the most searches for spa days happen around Mother’s Day. A full day of pampering can help your mum unwind, and give you the chance to spend some quality time together. There are some fantastic venues on offer nearby, with many offering everything from food to facials. Why not take a look at our review of China Fleet Country Club for some inspiration?
Hotels
20% of UK moms would like a lie in as a gift, so how about a hotel lie in with a fancy breakfast to wake up to? If you’re not a culinary master when it comes to breakfast, look no further than a hotel to do it for you. Whether it’s a trip away to their favourite location, a new town to explore, or even a simple stay in a venue closer to home, celebrate the special day by treating your mum this March.
Experience Days
These days searching for gifts begins online for most of us. With searches for ‘unique’ mother’s day gifts up 1.6%, it is no surprise that experience days come out on top. With so much on offer, it is likely you’ll be able to find a day’s fun for your mum, no matter what she’s into. Often perfect for the sporty or active mum, these experiences are ideal for those mums who may not rush to a pamper day but prefer to get stuck into an activity. There is nothing more unique than trying something new together.

Take a stroll down Memory Lane You don’t have to spend a fortune this Mother’s Day to make it a memorable one. Mum’s love spending time as a family, and how better to celebrate than enjoying the great outdoors together. As March is the first month of Spring, why not get out and about and enjoy the sunshine?
Radford Lake
This peaceful stroll starting at Radford Lake is full of interesting scenery. With shipwrecks, a gate house and diverse woodland, this walk is sure to be a hit with everyone. A fairly easy walk, this proves popular with children who fancy having a go at feeding the ducks on the lake also. A fantastic place for a picnic, why not pull out your picnic rug and stop for a bite to eat with your mum?
Lopwell Dam
A popular spot for families, Lopwell Dam has some fantastic wildlife to discover. At low tide, crossing the tidal ford leads you to the local nature reserve and nearby wildflower and butterfly meadow. The riverside path, open from February until September, allows a stroll along the riverside which could promise sightings of egrets, otters and salmon. With a friendly and informative cafe on site, how better to treat your mum than with a cup of tea and slice of cake? Images courtesy of Glimpses Photography
Tavistock
A bustling town, Tavistock has something for everyone. We recommend taking a stroll along the riverside and through the park, which is particularly popular with kids. As a relatively simple stroll, taking a walk down the high street is a great idea if you’re looking to discover a variety of quirky shops, where you may just find a unique gift this Mother’s Day.
