BUSINESS PROFILE With over 30 years experience in the financial industry, it’s safe to say that David Cater has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to advising. Having recently become part of Manning and Company, David has found that the support from this new partnership has helped his business to grow.

D

avid Cater is an independent Financial Advisor working as part of Manning and Co. The Team meet at his office based at The Watermark, to delve a little deeper into his history. “I certainly didn’t know that I wanted to go into financial services when I was younger. I left school with seven O Levels, and one A level- which was economics as it happens!” David went to King Edward the Sixth Community College in Totnes, and by the end of A levels, like many- he had had enough of education. In 1987, David was 23 years old and working on a building site with his father. He tells us a story of how he was walking down Totnes high street one day, and came across a woman who had broken down in her Ford Capri. “I saw this damsel in distress, so of course I went over to help. She told me she had broken down so I offered to walk her to the nearest garage”.

Shortly after, David attended a seminar in Torquay recommended by the woman he had helped. “You’ve got to remember- this was the mid to late 80’s, so it was very Del Boy with the red braces! You’re going to make lots of money- all of that. The pound signs were lighting up in my eyes!” David immediately got sucked into the razzmatazz, and signed himself up. However, the pull of the presentation wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, as David explains it was back in the days of commission only sales. “At the time I was with a girlfriend of three years, we had just had our daughter and bought our first home. It was really tough!” David stayed with the company; then named General Portfolio for just under a year before moving on. In 1989, David was working for the Prudential, as part of their home service. His job role was to collect client’s payments for services such as insurance premiums and life policies. “That was probably the best grounding I’ve had in the financial industry; they taught me everything and the training programmes were second to none”. David soon found that his position had become more of

8

a selling role, after the company decided to rationalise and remove the Home Service. As a result, David left the company in 1993. This then happened again after 8 years working as a Branch Advisor and Sales Manager for Halifax Building Society. Halifax merged with Bank of Scotland, and job roles were once again rationalised.

Naturally, the pair got chatting and David learnt that the woman was a financial advisor. “We got talking more and more and to be honest, at this point I was working with my dad but with no disrespect, I had no career path there, so this seemed like a good opportunity’’.

It is a constantly changing business but it’s an enjoyable one. No question, the best part is when you’re out seeing people

“I effectively had two options, take a voluntary redundancy package or demote my position back to branch Advisor”. I had been in the industry long enough to be confident that I could find another job, so I took voluntary redundancy. I took 5 months out, it was nice having time to catch my breath!” David started applying for jobs once again in the new year, and secured a branch advisor position for HSBC. After 7 years, David’s job role changed to a commercial IFA, to service the needs of business clients. This was mainly giving advice to directors and shareholders, rather than individuals. “I really enjoyed it. You were going out to see clients so it was a different environment; it was a more customer faced role”. The main turning point in David’s career came when he decided to leave HSBC after 11 years. Stressful sales targets meant that the job wasn’t what it was when David had first applied. “I wanted to stay in the industry,

- DAVID CATER- INDEPENDENT FINANCIAL ADVISOR but I wanted to become my own boss. So, like most of us- you make that leap of faith”. “At the time I had a company car, a pension and all of the benefits. That was what I was potentially giving up but it was risk I was prepared to take”. In 2011, David decided to go self employed. He had built up a great clientele through existing customers deciding to make the move with him, and through approaching accountant and solicitor contacts, offering help to their clients if needed. “I was lucky enough to obtain referrals from professional accountant contacts. It was just word of mouth really and it’s naturally grown from there”.

David was a self employed Independent Financial Advisor, but working initially with an agency named Positive Solutions. “Positive Solutions served as a good way of getting set up in business’’. But David found that he wasn’t out facing customers as much as he would have liked. “As the business grew, I found that increasingly, 80% of my time was spent sat in front of my laptop sorting paperwork or on the phone chasing providers and only 20% meeting clients. It shouldn’t be like that”. ‘’This is a customer centric business, and they are at the heart of everything we do, so something had to change’’ Following this realisation and a recommendation from a business friend- David Cater joined Manning and Company in April this year. “Manning’s offered me the opportunity to have the back up and support that I needed. My client bank had grown so much that I needed to service them properly. I am now able to go out and advise my clients without having to worry, as Manning’s have taken away a lot of the admin pressure”.

‘’Everyone, whether they are an individual or a business will need financial advice at some point and that is what we are here for’’. The Financial world is changing constantly and David needs to keep up with these changes through the ongoing qualifications and exams that he has to take. Current hot topics in the industry are Final Salary pension transfers and Workplace pensions but David and Manning’s offer advice across the range of financial areas from Mortgages and Investments, to more complex areas like Tax planning and Inheritance tax. David Cater also offers a fee based advice service. “The customer knows exactly what they’re getting, up front. The client can also decide how they want to pay that fee”. Customer relationships are extremely important to David, and making sure he is someone they can trust is a priority.

Most of my clients come through recommendation, which is what you want. That serves as a true representation of any business

I’ve been in the business for 30 years. I think people trust you after that length of time, and trust you know what you are doing

“I actually came to have an office at The Watermark through networking”. David was made aware there were offices available, put his name down on the waiting list and was successful.“It’s a good base to have and the Watermark has a great working environment. You’ve got the smaller private offices, meeting rooms, the café and every facility that you need is here. I’ve been here for four years now”. With over 30 years experience and a professional service tailored to his personal client base, David Cater has moulded his own success story. “The reason I wanted to start my own business is because I was tired of being targeted. I wanted to be my own boss and have that work, life balance. There is an argument to say that starting your own business brings more stress- but I really haven’t found that to be the case!”

BUSINESS PROFILE From a local security guard job in Tesco Metro, to a self made business man with over 120 staff members .The founder of the business, Kenyon Barker, had been in the security industry for a number of years before deciding to form his own company. We chat with Kenyon to find out what he had to go through to get to where he is today.

W

ith over 10 years in the industry, KB Security and Training have worked on festivals, private events, close protection and corporate events. The business has had a natural growth since its inception, due to Kenyon building its reputation as a professional, reputable and friendly firm. “I formed my own security company because I’ve worked in that area for years. I have seen the good and bad companies. This gave me the motivation to decide the only way to bring the security industry above and beyond the standard set was to form my own company”. “My first security job was when I was aged 21. I worked at Tesco Metro in Plymouth town centre. It was interesting! It was all new to me at the time”. As Kenyon found out, Security can of course be a risky profession. In just his first week of employment, he was attacked by a customer attempting to steal goods from the store. “I had no official training, but when somebody is coming at you the body has three natural reactions, fight, flight or freeze. Mine was fight in that moment!” Luckily, Kenyon was not hurt in the process and after working his position for 8 months, family matters meant that Kenyon made the move to Northumberland. He was eventually employed by Aspers Casino in Newcastle. “At this point, I had my Close Protection license. There were a lot of footballers coming in, and a lot of high end clients wanting to spend money. It was a high profile job”. Kenyon tells us of a major incident that happened when he was 25 years old. “I was working for Phoenix Security, a very professional agency”. Kenyon and another Security operative were attacked by a group of 15 individuals. “This resulted in me being off my feet for over a year”.

I live by a motto, it is what it is. Life is always going to throw things at you. Stand there and just take it on the chin

“Of course, that night I took it on most of my body! Cuts, bruises and bones, they heal. I was in hospital for 3 weeks and had physiotherapy for a while following on from that”. At this point, Kenyon was unable to work so had to take the time out to rebuild himself. Resilience is clearly something Kenyon has in abundance, as this didn’t stop him from pursuing his career path further.

14

After building up his employment portfolio rapidly through his diverse range of jobs, Kenyon explains that he was working in Close Protection abroad when everything changed. Kenyon’s relationship with his wife at the time had failed, and after attempts to rekindle for the sake of the couple’s two children wasn’t working out, Kenyon’s exwife moved up north with the children. “I was a complete mess. I am physically resilient yes, but mentally- I think everybody has a breaking point”. At this point in his life, Kenyon was living and working in Cornwall. “It was 9 months after a clean break with my ex-partner when she had started to go downhill”. 5 years ago, at the age of 27- Kenyon made the decision to quit everything and fight for custody of his children. “I had absolutely nothing for them. No clothes, no bed for them to sleep in. My dad was amazing; he helped financially so I could get myself started up again”. Kenyon took on a role as a health care assistant at a nursing home in Plympton, as the hours meant he could spend more time at home. “I needed to get my children sorted; I needed to get myself sorted”. KB Security was first formed when Kenyon had been

Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk

- KB SECURITY AND TRAINING working as a healthcare assistant for a year. He decided to set up his own company, working self employed. “I was approached by a previous employer- Expedient Security, to come and be a manager for them”. Kenyon had worked for Expedient in 2012 at the Olympics. “It was such a great experience. Expedient are like family to me now. They helped me set up my own business and continue to support me to this day”.

Being the managing director of KB Security and Training LTD is a challenging, yet rewarding experience

Kenyon prides himself on the fact that, until recently he hasn’t had to advertise to gain work or staff. He explains that this is down to the reputation he has built for his company. “Word got out that I was a good person to work for, so I had people approaching me”. In regards to taking on new staff, Kenyon explains the importance of a good personal image. “I think this comes from my military background. If you walk in looking like you’ve never seen an iron, it isn’t going to work. I want my guys to look presentable and respectful”. “I keep my staff happy and that is extremely important. We do a lot of travelling, a lot of time away from our families. I have to make sure that what they do is acknowledged and rewarded”.

Respect is very high on my list of priorities, I respect people and I expect to be respected in return. Because of this my team is like one big family, we have that understanding

“If anyone needs me, they can call up at stupid o clock and I will do everything I can to help them. I will always be a friend first, but my business comes just before- they don’t understand what I mean by that but it makes sense to me!” All together I have 80 SIA and on average about 80 stewards at present. Steve Middleton is my operations manager, and his partner Jayne Elphick does my HR. Without them I would have buckled a long time ago. I took them on this year and they’ve been a real asset to the company”. KB Security offer their own training programmes. Kenyon has a contract with Western College, meaning

that he can help people through the necessary courses and offer them an application form to potentially work for him if successful. “I train staff myself. First aid, PI- security is your first point of call. I want my staff to be confident and react straight away in the event of someone approaching them for help”. “All stewards hold, or are working towards their NVQ level 2 in spectator safety. All Supervisors who hold door supervisor licence have, or are working towards their level 3 and all managers have or are working towards their level 4 spectator safety qualification”. Kenyon tells us how, for the past two years they’ve been brought in to run Arcadia at Glastonbury. For anyone who isn’t familiar with the set up, it really is a spectacular event! “I absolutely love it. There are huge risk assessments involved in something as big as Glastonbury”. Kenyon explains how the security profession is extremely reactive, and you can’t anticipate anything. “You have to constantly think on your feet”. So what does the future hold for KB Security? Kenyon explains that he would love to run his own event. “I would like provide the entire security, solely through KB. It would run under my banner, and my logo”. Kenyon also tells us that he would like to break into the Plymouth market a bit more. “I have successful contracts in London. Plymouth is my home. We have contracts with local boxing events but I would love to grow this further”. With Kenyon’s resilience, determination and professionalism, there is absolutely no doubt that if he continues to grow his business, with the help of his team- these goals will soon become reality.

iving in one of the most beautiful parts of the country certainly offers us an advantage when it comes to walking and exploring. There are simply hundreds of wonderful places to find and remember whether you prefer panoramic views or cool woodland areas or evocative tors on Dartmoor; there is something for everyone.

Grab your walking shoes and let’s travel to some of the most breathtaking destinations in the Westcountry. Remember your sunscreen and sunhat, your dog and your camera too, breathe in that fresh summer air and enjoy a fun, cost effective family day out. Happy Hiking!

Glen before you encounter The Devil’s Cauldron which you can hear before you see it with its white foaming water battering against the black rock. There are alternative, easier, and shorter routes for disabled people and those who are less fit but the sights at Lydford Gorge are well worth visiting. A walk at Plymbridge Woods and Valley offers you the chance to experience the soothing Plym River and a wide variety of wildlife. as well as trees such as oak, ash, sycamore and chestnut. Lying to the north-east of Plymouth, at the edge of the city, Plymbridge Woods comprises some 200 acres of woodland and meadows. It is hard to believe that about one hundred years ago it was the centre of local industry whereby china clay and granite were mined and transported down to Plymouth by rail.

The deepest gorge in the entire Southwest is Lydford Gorge. It is a National Trust Property between Okehampton and Tavistock on the edge of Dartmoor. The gorge is surrounded by ancient woodland and wildlife and the full walk is around three miles long, and takes approximately two hours. Walking in the gorge is strenuous and arduous and the National Trust do emphasise this and suggest good walking shoes. The walk is extremely rugged, with uneven surfaces, slippery paths and vertical drops but the benefits of this riverside walk are amazing. To begin you will encounter Lambhole Wood - a mix of lime, elm, hawthorn, cherry, laurel, and horse chestnut trees and as a result, a haven for birds and animals. The White Lady Waterfall is not to be missed; the waterfall is 90ft high and the rushing water comes down almost vertically. Oldcleave wood is full of oak trees and then Tunnel Falls is where a series of potholes have formed due to erosion. Next is the calming Pixie

The Old Cann Quarry is a good place to spot Peregrine Falcons but many other birds such as woodpeckers, wood warblers, jays and buzzards are also frequent visitors here. Keep an eye out for mallard ducks and kingfishers along the water’s edge and don’t be too surprised to see otters, deers, stoats, badgers and weasels. The walk is pure wildlife haven. If you feel full of energy you could walk the entire length of the Plym Trail from Point Cottage, Laira Bridge, Plymouth, to Clearbrook on Dartmoor but that is 7.5 miles long. Plymbridge Woods is free to enter. Dartmoor is the largest area of wild open countryside in the whole of southern England. Its wild open heather and bracken covered moorland is interspersed with deep wooded river valleys, topped by granite tors. There are many, many walks to go on but a particular one takes in some of the better known tors. The village of Lustleigh lies east of Dartmoor, where open moorland meets the Devon countryside of wooded hills and fields. Start in the lane above Lustleigh, up the footpath into the woods. At the junction of two paths take the upper one and climb high above the River Bovey. At the end you will find Hunters Tor and the Ancient Hill Tor, follow the path down to the right and then take the dog leg to Peck Farm, returning to your car along the path on the lower slopes of the wood. The Iron Age hill fort on Hunter’s Tor is Lustleigh’s main attraction to tourists.

GUIDED WALKS www.walkitcornwall.co.uk combines guided walks with packages at certain hotels as well as day walks. www.discover-cornwall.com is a Blue Badge guide and offers walks with a literary and artistic interest across Cornwall. Don’t forget that Cornwall can offer you amazing visits to the moor too. Cornwall’s highest summit is Brown Willy at 420m and there are views across the wild expanse of Bodmin moor. You may even get a glimpse of Tintagel and Fowey. Drive north east of Camelford on the A39 Bude road, take the minor road to Tregoodwell and continue to the car park at the end of Roughtor Road.

With so many walks in the Westcountry to choose from, what are you waiting for? It’s time to grab the picnic, lace your shoes and explore...
