It seems as if the nice weather is here to stay, and there are lots of things to look forward to in August! The British Firework Championships return to Plymouth for the 22nd year running. Grab a blanket and make your way to one of the many beauty spots to watch the sky light up.

This month, we caught up with Bennett Wealth Planning at their office in Yelverton, a boutique family business offering bespoke private client wealth management and ongoing financial advice to its clients.

I do not see myself as an Advisor, I still see myself as a Chemical Engineer. I follow the same thought process I was trained to. Following on from his three years in London gaining his Banking Practice and Management Bachelor’s degree, Henry is the businesses Operations Manager. “I now have to go through the education and qualification process as my brother to become a client facing Financial Planner, Stockbroker and Wealth Manager myself”. Henry explains that he is over the next 3 years, working towards taking on the role of another advisor within the business.

The spectacular two-day event, which celebrated its 21st anniversary in August last year, has been held on Plymouth Hoe ever since it began in 1997 and attracts more than 100,000 visitors from all over the country and beyond every year, generating around £4 million of income for the local economy.

I

t is one of the main highlights of the city’s events calendar, with Plymouth Hoe providing a wonderful viewing point for the best firework companies in the country to wow the crowds with their dazzling displays in the skies above Plymouth Sound.

This years event will take place on Wednesday the 8th and Thursday 9th August The British Firework Championships were started in 1997 by The Event Services Association (TESA), a trade body representing the outdoor events industry in the UK. For some time there had been some discussion among professional display companies in the industry about creating an annual competition where they could demonstrate their skills.

After considering a number of venues around the UK, Plymouth became the favoured location as it was felt to provide a natural amphitheatre where large scale pyrotechnics could be used safely and watched from a variety of points around the harbour and Sound. Following discussions with the City Council in the mid-1990s, a partnership agreement was formed to launch the event in 1997.

BEST PLACES TO VIEW With the displays being fired from the Mountbatten breakwater, the prime locations to view the event will be either from the Citadel or on the Hoe. The Queen Anne’s Battery area, which overlooks the firing site, is another popular viewing point as is the Jennycliff area behind Mountbatten.

The Mountbatten pub is another option, but here you will be limited by the side-on view which means that some of the more spectacular effects may not be seen.

ocated on Ridgeway in Plympton, Shapla Balti Cuisine is an authentic Indian restaurant and takeaway, offering the finest traditional Curries, Specials, Masala’s, Biryani’s and more. Last month, the OM team went along to give this local hidden gem a try! Written by Libbi Chapple We were all excited for our evening at Shapla- and with the establishment already having such a great reputation in the local community; we certainly had high expectations!

Mr Ali and his team went above and beyond to ensure we had a great night.

We arrived just after 6pm and were seated near the window looking out over the busy Ridgeway. Mr Ali took our drinks order and brought over our Appetisers, crispy poppadoms and a selection of dips- the tangy mango chutney was my personal favourite.

The atmosphere in the restaurant itself is clean, cosy and welcoming. Mr Ali and his dedicated staff are on hand for anything you might need and it’s clear to see that they treat everyone who walks through the door as friends.

We were recommended to try the mixed platter as a starter- which consisted of lamb, chicken and pakora cooked in different herbs and spices, accompanied by a side salad and crispy vegetable samosas. Everything was presented beautifully and the smell as it approached your table made your mouth water. One thing we can all say with confidence is that the team at Shapla certainly know their stuff- and can give you honest recommendations based on your taste.

Shapla Balti will happily personalise each dish to suit your taste- making it more or less spicy depending on your preference.

The portion sizes are extremely generous for the fair price, and the naan breads are amazing. We tried both the garlic and peshwari naan- they were so good we went back for more. The food was bursting with herbs and spices, with just the right amount of heat in everybody’s dish. We all

agreed that it was genuinely the nicest Indian food we have had in a long time.

Not to be defeated, we took a look at the dessert menu. A great range of choices from creamy and light coconut ice cream served in a real coconut- to rich Forrero Rocher ice cream drizzled with chocolate sauce.

Shapla Balti were finalists in the British Curry Awards in 2017 and were awarded a Tripadvisor certificate of excellence for three years running. They are a celebrated favourite in the local community and it is clear to see why!

Personally, we recommend that you make the time to dine in at Shapla- to really get the full experience, but they also offer delivery to the local area. Shapla regularly host a number of charity events and special evenings, check their website for updates.

The OM Team had a great night at Shapla.We ate so much food we left seriously needing a nap! We have all agreed that we definitely need to return, the hospitality that Mr Ali and his team showed not only us- but every customer who entered the restaurant was second to none.

It is clear that the friendly, welcoming approach from the Shapla team- along with freshly cooked traditional cuisine is what drives this business forward and keeps people coming back for more.

A sizzling summer of surprises at Royal William Yard!

From sampling some of the region’s best food from local traders, to catching the latest sporting action and blockbusters on the lawn; this summer is packed with an array of events at Royal William Yard. With something new to discover and experience on every visit, and with activities to suit all ages and interests, the Yard is this summer’s must-visit destination.

icking-off the summer in style is a celebration of Wimbledon. Royal William Yard’s lawn will play host to a big screen, deckchairs, Pimm’s bar and a plentiful supply of strawberries and cream – bringing a taste of SW19 to the South West. To celebrate one of Britain’s biggest sporting events, tennis fans can watch the action on court unfold in the heart of the historic Yard, with racquet coaches also offering lawn tennis taster lessons to bring the experience to life.

Returning each month is the award-winning Good Food Market, which boasts the freshest produce from the South West’s top suppliers, alongside artisan makers. This August will also see the welcome return of #BardInTheYard, with an open-air production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, performed by the Barbican Theatre Group, taking place in Residence One Gardens.

As we head late into the summer, guests to the Yard can expect the unexpected, as the dazzling Weekend of Wonders returns with circus performers wowing the crowds in a family-friendly extravaganza.

And making the most of the warm summer’s evenings, the much-loved Open-Air Cinema is back, pitching up on the lawn for three blockbuster performances.

Moviegoers can enjoy the experience from the comfort of a picnic blanket or watch in style with a VIP package.

Plymouth’s art hub and Yard resident, Ocean Studios, also has a packed events calendar, perfect for anyone who wants to get creative this summer. Open to everyone and for all ages and abilities, just some of the weekly workshops include jewellery making, floristry, photography, calligraphy and ceramics – with makers tables for both adults and children. There will also be a range of exhibitions taking place at the studios,

featuring work from both local and internationally renowned artists, plus student exhibitions from Plymouth University and Plymouth College of Art.
