Choosing Your Christmas Tree

D

Nordmann Fir

o you wait until just a few days before Christmas to sort out your tree? Or do you give-in to the kid’s pleading and find yourself buying a tree on the first day of December? Regardless of your traditions, buying a Christmas tree takes a bit of knowledge and planning.

Holds onto its needles well Lasts a long time if looked after correctly

You could go for one which is more expensive but holds onto its needles, or save a bit of cash (probably a good idea for most of us at this time of year) and carefully look after one which might not last so long. If you’re not sure where to start, take a look at our suggestions and locate your nearest seller. Then wrap up warm and head outside to take your pick!

Long, soft, dark green needles

Norwegian Spruce

Traditional favourite in the UK Tendency to drop needles so best bought closer to Christmas

Christmas Tree Tips: •

When choosing a tree, pick it up a few inches from the floor and drop it onto its stump. A freshly cut tree should hold onto its needles.

Keep cut trees topped up with water to stop them from drying it. Some trees will need watering daily.

Bushy and classically-shaped

Blue Spruce

Although a Nowegian Spruce is known to drop its needles, a good quality, well-watered one should last as long as its more expensive rival. Before taking your tree indoors, cut about half an inch off the butt to open up its pores.

Strong pine scent Highly desired due to its stunning blue/ green needles Needles can be fairly sharp, so not suitable in a home with small children or pets Pot-grown

Where to Buy: Santa Trees Lodge Hill, Liskeard, PL14 2EL

Most popular tree in the UK

Sconner Wood Polbathic, PL11 3ET

Qualitree Cuddyford, Rew Road, Ashburton, TQ13 7EN

Roger Howell Lukesland Farm, Ivybridge, PL21 0JF

BUSINESS PROFILE The Reluctant Salesman – Creating the freedom to sell. We speak with Martin Miller about how he’s pulling apart the stereotypical, pushy salesperson image, and how life events and experiences have shaped his career path and the way he works today.

A

lthough his business is called The Reluctant Salesman, Martin Miller is all but reluctant - his principle for sales success is based on life skills, not business skills. Martin puts it simply: “We deconstruct the thinking behind what it is to be a salesman, unpacking the principle that people love to buy, but hate to be sold to.” The Reluctant Salesman was founded by Terry Mullins in 2002 and Martin Miller is his first franchisee, covering Plymouth and north Cornwall. It’s Martin’s background, personality and life experiences that persuaded Terry to choose him for this position. Martin started his working life as a hairdresser. He explains, “I was sent to a services boarding school and was expected to go into the Navy, but I didn’t want to, so I did the complete opposite. I studied A-level art at sixth form and became interested in creative endeavours.” After a casual conversation with the family hairdresser, Martin started work in a hair salon. “I quickly realised if you want to be good at something you have to really push yourself, so I decided to go on the competition circuit. I ended up winning competitions in Cornwall, then regionally before qualifying for the British Nationals.” Despite his success in hairdressing, a trip abroad was the catalyst for change. “I went back to the salon that I was managing at the time and handed my notice in. I think I was disillusioned with being an employee. I don’t necessarily think it was the profession, I just knew I had to make a move.” Following that departure, Martin’s previous clients approached him so he started working freelance. His clientele grew rapidly and he provided a range of services including photography session and wedding work. While this was happening, Martin met Rebecca who would eventually become his wife, mother of his children & business partner. “In 1998, I stumbled across an opportunity to capitalise on the deregulated utilities residential 10

market, so myself and my wife started building that up and running it alongside my freelance work.” The business was going well, but in 2001, Martin went through his most painful life experience. His best friend committed suicide, and it was Martin who discovered him. “Now anything in my life, apart from my children passing before me, can’t be as bad as what I found that day.” It was his darkest moment, but with so much going on in his life, he used the experience to better himself as a person to create the life he wanted. So in 2002 the couple bought their first property for renovation. “I liked the idea of project managing while we were building our business. Then in 2003 we got married and a year later had our first child, Fraya.” In 2006 the couple bought their next renovation property and also had their son James. Martin started his NLP journey, becoming qualified as a practitioner that same year. However it was in 2007 that Martin experienced his first major learning curve in business. “I was approached about a business that I thought looked good – it was to do with a product that went into the licensed trade. I decided to invest but ended up discovering the guy was a con-man. I now know what the word litigation means & what it costs!” A few years later in 2013 he re-grouped and went on to start up Utileyes – a cost reductions business which included commercial and residential energy. Alongside this he started consultancy work for a renewable energy company. Unfortunately, the

- THE RELUCTANT SALESMAN work-load and the stress took its toll on Martin and Rebecca, and after 21 years together, they decided to go their separate ways. Amongst this busy timeline of life events, Martin met Terry Mullins at a local networking group. This contact has now proven itself invaluable, as some years later following the split from his wife, Terry and Martin had a timely conversation about a potential new career path in 2015.

We talk about making selling simple and creating the freedom to sell

Having watched Martin over the years, in the way he handled businesses, people and projects, Terry decided that he would be the perfect franchisee at The Reluctant Salesman. Martin took him up on the offer, and after doing some support training with Terry, his decision was set in stone. A lot of people might describe a salesman as being ‘pushy’, but The Reluctant Salesman teaches that it shouldn’t be this way. “It’s all about timing, when someone is ready to buy, they buy. We talk about making selling simple and creating the freedom to sell. I believe business is the best arena to test yourself & to realise your true potential”. Over the years he has challenged himself in his free

time – he’s served a four-year term as a governor at his kid’s school, he’s restored a couple of cars and a motorbike, done a season of stock car racing, been in a punk band (in his youth!) and taken part in two skydives for charity. One of those was for the Ronald McDonald Foundation, which helped put him and his wife up near Bristol Children’s Hospital when their eldest child was rushed into care with pneumonia and septicaemia back in 2004. They were told that she might not make it through the night, and it’s the moments like this that have kept Martin grounded and focused on his priorities in life. It’s time now to look ahead and focus on what’s to come. Martin tells us, “I’ve worked for myself for over 25 years, and I’m hungrier now than I think I’ve ever been. If you’re not moving forward, you’re moving backwards, because life these days is like a conveyer belt.” Just a simple phone call can start something new and spark ideas, and for Martin, picking up the phone is a sign that someone is receptive and wants to move their business and life forward. He says, “Most moments of change in our life start with a conversation, you don’t know where that conversation’s going to go, but it has to start somewhere.” Martin finishes by saying, “I’ve realised over my years of work that everything I’ve done to date was to challenge what I can do and how I can grow. I couldn’t possibly be doing what I’m doing now had I not faced the range of challenges that I have along the way.” If you’d like Martin to help you or your business, for him to speak at an event or just want to learn more:

How to Fight a Winter Cold It’s that time of year again and as much as we love cosy nights in by the fire, the chilly weather can also spark the unwanted welcome of the winter cold. We’ve compiled a list of herbal remedies and immunity-boosting food to help you combat the dreaded cold and flu season. By Lauren Batten Garlic- Garlic contains allicin, a sulfuric compound that produces anti-inflammatory antioxidants, meaning if you’re already sick garlic will help you get better faster. Furthermore, the oil in garlic acts as a natural expectorant that helps clear congestion. There are some rather quirky techniques out there when it comes to using garlic to fight a cold, including rubbing garlic into the soles of your feet! If you’d rather try something a bit more simple, why not blend it into a yummy garlic and tomato soup? Blueberries- Blueberries contain the most active antioxidants of any fresh fruit. They’re also jam packed full of vitamin C which helps to shorten the duration of cold symptoms. Making blueberry smoothies is not only an easy way to consume a large quantity at once but they also taste delicious! Why not try adding a dash of honey to make it an even sweeter treat? Chicken Soup- The go-to dish when we’re feeling blue, chicken soup is a favoured remedy across the nation, but does it actually help fight a cold? Tests have proven that it does in fact prevent certain white blood cells from causing inflammation. Plus the hot liquid helps relieve congestion as well as giving you that comforting feeling that we all desire when run down.

Dark Chocolate - As if we needed another reason to eat more chocolate- the chemical found in cocoa, theobromine, has been shown to help calm both acute and chronic coughs. A much tastier alternative to cough sweets! Echinacea- Echinacea is a herb native to areas east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States and Native Americans have been using it to treat infections for over 400 years. It contains flavonoids - chemicals that can help boost your immune system and reduce inflammation. The herb can be found in many supermarkets and enjoyed as a cup of tea- perfect for those cold evenings in front of the television. Eucalyptus oil- A tree native to Australia, the oil from Eucalyptus can silence a cough as well as clear your chest. Fill the bathroom sink with hot water and drop three to five drops of the oil into the water. Drape a towel over your head and bend over the sink. For best results do this for about five minutes and you’ll soon feel your sinuses open up as you breathe in the vapours. Alongside our recommendations, the NHS advises drinking plenty of fluids, getting plenty of rest and sticking to a healthly diet.

PLYMOUTH’S BEST BUSINESSES We last spoke to Karl Welburn of Print, Copy, Scan in February this year, and a lot has changed since. As 2016 draws to a close, he has a bigger team, a better office, and more drive and determination than ever, as he tells us about his latest accomplishments and goals for the future.

S

eeing deer wander past your office window would, for many people, be a real treat. For the team at Print, Copy, Scan, it’s a daily occurrence. As I drive into the car park of their new offices I see two small deer scamper past me before scurrying up the hill in Dark Lake Park, Darklake View, Estover.

PCS has just opened its new headquarters here and it’s a very impressive building covering two floors. It’s been nearly 12 months since I last met Karl Welburn, director of PCS. It’s been a very eventful time for the company - and for the entrepreneur himself. The new HQ is double the size of their old offices and it’s provided new energy for the team who make the business a success. Before settling down with Karl, I have a quick chat with Jeff Wright who looks after the company’s stores – ensuring any one of a large number of toner cartridges and printers can be quickly dispatched to an awaiting client. Jeff’s role is crucial and it quickly becomes clear the key to PCS’ business success is Karl’s ability to choose the perfect mix of people to make the company possess a team of motivated professionals. My first impression of PCS’ new HQ is, simply, ‘wow.’ The building is certainly impressive with its array of solar panels, LED lighting and, of course, photocopiers and printers. All of them are at the cutting edge of what is being produced and come with strong green credentials – something which is vital in the context of a more environmentally aware world. “It’s all about sustainability,” explains Karl. “All of our Toshiba photocopiers are carbon offset so it makes sense to fit into the ethos of the suppliers. I believe we all have a duty to try to protect our natural world for future generations. 18

“We are also part of a project which helps to provide stoves for people in Kenya to help them cook in a safer and more environmentally friendly fashion. It’s great to be involved in an international scheme which helps thousands of people.” It’s not just Karl who has this philanthropic gene. His sister, Clare Welburn, ran the London Marathon for Alzheimer’s Research and raised a staggering £5,000 for the charity. Locally, Karl and a small team from the Plymouth Round Table, drove across Europe to raise £2,000 for Jeremiah’s Journey. The company also sponsored the Boxing Heroes event at Plymouth Pavilions. At the start of 2016, the company employed 12 people but, today, it holds a contingent of 16 (which includes the office dog, Ozzie). The Bichon Frise often happily trotters into work (with what appears to be the intrinsic goal of knocking over bins to try to find tasty titbits)! The team should reach a magic milestone of 500 clients by the end of the year. Sheer hard graft has been behind its phenomenal success since PCS first started in March 2010.

AND ENTREPRENEURS “It’s our service which sets us apart from the rest, anyone can knock on doors but, compared to our competitors, we have more engineers for the number of machines in offices. It means we have a faster response time than many of our competitors. “We carry more stock and can quickly access more than £50,000 worth of toner and parts for clients as and when it is needed. “We are constantly training on the latest technologies as it is an area which is always changing. We have the latest high spec copiers in our own office so it gives us all the chance to ensure we’re personally up to date on developments in the industry. “As the company grows and becomes better known we find we are being invited into bigger contracts and tenders - but the important thing to remember is our roots. We always look after all our clients. “In this part of the world, the small firms are heavily involved in ensuring the success of the bigger companies. As such, it’s about the quality of service we provide for these teams and the pride we take in installing and maintaining their equipment.” And it’s the teams pride in their work which wins them the accolades of their customers. They go to the nth degree to make sure their service is outstanding.

“My younger self would be happy with what I have done. It’s all been down to solid hard work and graft but I haven’t lost touch with my inner soul. I bought a caravan three years ago in Newquay and it’s good to go down there with my wife and two children to relax at weekends.” Last time we met, Karl talked about the importance of achieving the right work-life-balance for being able to operate successfully in the business world. He explained to me one of the keys for entrepreneurial success is ensuring you’re always fresh and energized. As such, Karl enjoys cycling and shows me a photograph of a beautiful red and yellow Klein mountain bike which he has just bought. They stopped making them some 20 years ago and, for Karl, its vintage is the prime attraction. “I’m really into my cycling and love retro mountain bikes as they allow me to remember what it was like to ride them when I was a kid. “It’s good to engage with the old fashioned technology and it reminds me of going all over the Moors when I was younger and it’s great to be able to recapture that adventurous spirit.” It’s perhaps this same adventurous spirit which once served him well as a youngster that now serves him well as one of the city’s leading entrepreneurs.

With such dedication, the team’s reputation is fast seeing them as the Number One copier supplier in the region.

compensation if you are excluded or have to leave due to your partner’s behaviour? Inheritance: Cohabitees’ claims on death are more limited than spouses. A spouse will inherit from a deceased partner where there is no Will. Unmarried partners do not inherit in this way – and this can have serious implications.

Myth-busting for unmarried couples David Cobern of The Family Law Company considers the law and unmarried couples.

Be prepared

T

here is a myth that people living together in long-term relationships become ‘common law’ spouses with similar rights to married couples. In fact, living with someone, even long term, results in a very different legal situation. Disputes between married couples are dealt with by law prescribed by Parliament. The courts have powers to adjust assets and income to achieve fairness. Lawyers can advise married clients about outcomes with reasonable certainty. Parliament has declined to extend this regime to the unmarried. Instead, unmarried claims are decided using a combination of civil legislation and previous cases, and outcomes are uncertain. For the client, it can be confusing and intimidating. Legal costs and risks are high. With a little foresight and some sensible precautions, much of this uncertainty could be avoided. Common disputes Property: Sometimes property is owned by one partner, but the other believes they have a share in it. If a property is jointly-owned, there may be disagreement about selling and dividing the money. What happens when one party excludes the other? Children: Who should make financial provision for children such as maintenance and accommodation? Debts/payments made: What if one partner has debts, or they leave you with the bills? You may worry whether you will get credit for a mortgage and home maintenance. Are you able to claim For more information please visit: www.thefamilylawco.co.uk Email: enquiries@thefamilylawco.com

I have recently written a book, Living Together and the Law to offer clear cut support for unmarried couples. This provides guidance on how to avoid dispute on separation, using my experience advising unmarried clients on relationship breakdown. If the worst happens and your relationship ends, the book details strategies which can help you to protect your position, and present a case to best effect. These are some of the more common questions the book covers: • I’m buying a house/running a business with my partner. What can I do to avoid dispute if we separate? • I already live with my partner. We have assets, but I think we might not agree about who owns what. How can we sort this out without dispute? • Our relationship is in trouble. How can I prepare for the worst? • We have separated. What must I do to get the best result for myself and our children? David’s book gives valuable information, but if you have more questions the Family Law Company has the necessary expertise to assist whether you are married or unmarried. We will give you the clear guidance to resolve your dispute fairly, quickly and with minimum acrimony and expense. If you have children, we will help you identify the best arrangements for them and help you identify ways of protecting them from exposure to conflict. We find solutions which place their needs at the centre of discussions. Tel: 01752 674999

All Wrapped Up

If you’ve got a pile of Christmas presents but dread the evening you sit down to wrap them, read our tips and ideas to feel better prepared. Don’t forget to pick up selotape! Start wrapping early. Stock up on wrapping paper and wrap each gift as you get it, leaving decorative bows, ribbons and tags until later. At least if anyone goes sneaking about looking for presents they won’t ruin their surprise! Try assigning each person in the house a different patterned/ coloured wrapping paper. It makes it quite fun when you’re searching through them on Christmas day morning and it saves the need for tags. Plain, brown Kraft paper can be an interesting choice for gift wrapping. It’s great for anyone who loves to decorate their gifts with ribbons, sprigs of holly or beautiful tags, but if this isn’t up your street, stick to patterned paper. If you’re trying to wrap something soft and light such as a scarf or shirt, fold it around a flat piece of cardboard to make wrapping easier. Don’t be afraid to put a gift in a box if it’s too difficult to wrap. A box with a beautiful ribbon wrapped around it can look very stylish. As an extra gift, decorate your wrapping with a Christmas tree decoration. Tie it on with ribbon or twine, and give your loved one a decoration to keep for next year. Try wrapping a small, light gift in a silky scarf and tie it to keep it secure. It’s a gift, wrapped up in another gift! If you’re making food gifts, such as truffles or shortbread, wrap them in celophane and then tie with a big, beautiful ribbon. Or purchase celophane bags from a craft store and decorate them however you like!

The Perfect Christmas Party A Christmas party might be a tradition amongst your friends and family, but if it’s your turn to host it can be stressful to plan. Here are our tips to help you host a bash your guests won’t forget.

Set the date Diaries fill up fast at Christmas time which means you want to get a date pencilled in early. To ensure a good turn-out you could even send a “save the date” email or create a Facebook event.

Establish the type of Christmas party you’re having Will it be a daytime or evening event? Will you be inviting partners/children? Fancy dress themes? Buffet or sit down meal? Make these decisions early on so you have enough time to plan.

Presentation What theme will you go for? Some popular themes include: traditional Christmas, vintage, circus, winter wonderland, ballroom and pantomime. If you decide to pick a theme make a list of anything you would associate with it. From music to decorations, to games and fancy dress. Also consider smells- burn some Christmas candles and mull some wine to get the festive fragrance flowing!

Planning Finalise your menu at least two weeks before the night. It’s also a good idea to print out recipes and even give them a run before the night to prepare for any mistakes. Try and prepare as much as possible in advance to elevate the pressure when the guests arrive. Writing a time plan can also be a useful tool to help you stay on top of your plans. Write a list of everything that needs to be ordered, arranged and cooked and then tick them off the list when they’re done. It will help the evening run much smoother and you’ll be able to visually see all the hard work you’ve done!

Food and drink Many guests are likely to want traditional Christmas food such as: turkey, eggnog and Christmas pudding. However, other guests may want some variety. See our creative take on traditional stuffing below! 38

Avoid a beige platter! Instead choose a variety of colours and textures to give an impressive looking spread. Be clever with your budget - hosting a Christmas party can get expensive but there are ways to cut down the costs. For example, you can use cheaper cuts of meat in slow-cook one pots that taste just as great. Consider drinks as well - will you be having traditional mulled wine or will you try making some exotic cocktails? Also consider non-drinkers, instead of sticking with conventional soft drinks why not make them mocktails so they don’t feel like they’re missing out on the fun? It’s also important to remember to ask your guests about any special dietary requirements they may have.

Special extras Put together goody bags or personalised stockings for the guests (depending on the theme) chocolates and wine are always a good choice. You could even get more hands-on and make your own unique treats such as Christmas tree decorations or homemade cupcakes.
