EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

with Peter Andre Tickets for sale at: www.ticketmaster.co.uk #Celebrating25YearsTour

Peter Andre announces his UK tour celebrating 25 years. The popstar, songwriter and TV personality will celebrate 25 years across 25 venues - and one of them is right here in Plymouth! It has been 25 years since Peter Andre first burst onto the Australian music scene. Now the internationally acclaimed, global music star is back and is bringing a 25date music tour here in the UK. The tour will see Peter encompass his musical journey through the years, performing his best loved hits from his early years to his most recent tracks. The singer/songwriter will be here in Plymouth on 21st February to perform at Plymouth Pavillions - so make sure to save the date in your diary so you don’t miss out! Congratulations on 25 years mate, that’s incredible! You don’t look any different, you look exactly the same! “Aw, you’re a good man. See the thing is that it’s been about 29 years since I got signed – I can’t believe that – but it’s been 25 years since I did my first tour and that one was with Madonna, I was the opening act for Madonna. On the Aussie Tour, I was on her Girly Tour and that was incredible and that was stadium, so it was a great way to start really.” So that was your first ever tour then, with Madonna? “Yes – well actually my first ever tour before that was with Bobbie Brown, but in the same year it was with

10

Madonna at – Stadium, so it was just like wow. So we’re celebrating 25 years of being on stage. So back then, how did you even get into the music business? “So I used to enter competitions from when I was 13 years old. My first time was with my brother Chris and I would literally enter competitions – wouldn’t win any of them – and I thought, well, okay maybe I’m picking the wrong songs. Sometimes I wouldn’t even get as far as singing the song, they would just hear the title and say ‘NEXT’. “So anyway, one year in 1989, there was a competition called ‘New Faces’ which was a national competition and it was a bit like Britain’s Got Talent. And everyone was telling me you should audition for it and I was like why? I haven’t won one local competition, how am I going to win a national one and be humiliated in front of the whole country? And people were like you should because you’re not getting through because they’re not even letting you sing! So I went on New Faces and got offered a recording deal live on air! So 29 years later, now an internationally acclaimed, global media star, 24-date tour; how excited are you for that? “Well now it’s actually 25 dates and it’s celebrating 25 years. We were actually going to do 25 songs but we thought no, we don’t want to bore people to death! But it has generally got a 25 theme.

Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk

“In that time - it’s quite unbelievable because I’ve written hundreds of songs and in the UK and out of them we’ve had ten, top five singles; and three number ones; and a lot of people don’t remember them except for Mysterious girl, but these were hits. And sometimes when we’re onstage people will be like ‘Oh I didn’t know he sang that?’, and I hear people say it all the time like ‘I didn’t realise that was your song.’ So it’s great in a way, you know?” Yes definitely! So is there a particular style of genre that you’ve chosen for this, or is it a bit of a mix and match? “Well it is a bit of a mix match. The one thing is, what I don’t want is people to come to the show and think it’s going to be an hour and a half of pop music, an hour and a half of swing music, an hour and a half of any type of music. It’s basically going to be like a night out, and I even want to sort of narrate it and talk about the different stages and what happened at that time.”

Haha - so when you’re not performing, or not in the media, what do you like to do? “I am an avid cook. I love cooking. It’s definitely one of my hobbies! I love watching TV, haha. You know, cooking – for me – is therapeutic. Some people dread the thought of cooking, but I just think I can’t wait!” Of course, you have a busy schedule. I’ve also read that you’ve landed your first Hollywood film role; ‘Undoing’, is that what it’s called? “Yes, so I’ve done my first short film in America and at the moment I’m doing something called ‘The Inheritance’ in Los Angeles. So that’s being sent around to all the film festivals around the world, so we’re just waiting to see if we get a nomination which could be amazing, you never know!

So when is your Plymouth date?

“And also, I’ve got a small part in a feature film in the cinema in America. So I won’t say what it’s called or anything because they will want to announce that when they’re ready – but yeah, I’m moving in the right direction.”

“I think I’m down in Plymouth on the 21st. The thing about Plymouth, nine years ago is where I met Emily! It was at that Pavilions.”

So one last question: Pete you have a great family life now, will there ever be a chance that you’ll do another series of ‘My Life’?

Oh wow really? Because Emily used to work at Taunton, didn’t she?

“I will never say never, but I do think that time has come and gone. It was such a good time, we left on a high and we left when the viewing figures were huge. I remember thinking that I was mad for stopping it, but it was good to end on a high and sometimes it’s good to step away before things go wrong.”

“She did and her father operated on my kidney. So what happened was he operated on me, I gave him tickets to a show and they said that they could come to Plymouth. “They came to Plymouth, I met Emily and I met some of the family, we were all friends and didn’t think anything at the time; then about two years later, obviously we’re friends and always seeing each other and the whole family, I just let the penny drop. I knew she was the one and obviously I was hoping she felt the same! “But yeah because we were all friends: her family were friends with my family and there was no talk or no thought of us being together!” So her father worked on your kidney and you met Emily that way? “Yes and it proves two things: one, that there’s no love without pain, and the other is that I always said to her dad if you knew then what you knew now then the operation would have been completely different.”

START PLANNING During the course of our life, we seem to be planning for almost everything: from the house we will be buying to the cake we will be baking on Sunday. Everything is planned and scheduled so that we will not have any surprise. However, there is something that we do not seem very keen on planning: what is going to happen when we die? I admit it: the thought is not exactly enjoyable, but it is one of the only (most unpleasant) certainties in our life. It’s going to happen whether we plan it or not. I suppose one of the approaches could be: oh well, I am not going to be there anyway. However, if we think about it a bit deeper, it will certainly occur to us that, yes WE are not going to be there, but our children are. Do we really want them to struggle with us dying intestate (that is: with no Will)? Do we want them not to be able to help us when we have lost mental capacity? Do we want them to go through Probate, paying Probate fees (as of April 2019 most probably proportional to the value of your property), and worse still: do we want them to struggle with a third party claiming on our estate? Do we want them to painfully choose our funeral and struggling to pay for it? The obvious answer is no. No matter how unpleasant the thought of passing away is, the thought of leaving your children to deal with an unplanned estate is even more distressing. Don’t leave it too late.

Estate Planning Practitioners are paramount to help you reach a peace of mind by helping you create: • A will, the first, albeit fragile, line of defence in estate planning makes sure that at least you will not die intestate and that your estate will be distributed according to your wish to the people you want to inherit, providing there are no claims by third parties under the Inheritance Act 1975 and that your property is not gone due to unforeseen circumstances; • A Lasting Power of Attorney makes sure that the people you trust are able to speak on your behalf and protect you when you are no longer able to deal with both your property and financial and your health & welfare matters; • A Home Protection Trust protects you against all unforeseen eventualities, against any claims by third parties under the Inheritance Act 1975 and, last but not least, your assets will pass seamlessly to your children without applying for a Grant of Probate and paying Probate fees (they range between 2% to 5% plus VAT on the total value of the estate); • A Funeral Plan makes sure that your children will not have to choose your funeral details at a very difficult time and that your funeral will be paid at today’s prices, as funeral prices tend to go up and up every year. All these legal tools are as important as each other. An Estate Planning Practitioner will listen to you, will find out what your personal and financial circumstances are, and find the best solution to put all your affairs in order.

BUYING A HOUSE ADMIST THE UNCERTAINTY OF BREXIT Photo courtesy of Leander Developments

W

ith Brexit just around the corner, many of us are sat wondering the type of effect this will have on the housing market. Whether you’re a first-time buyer, or a homeowner looking to sell their home and move on, this can add even more uncertainty to an already confusing time in your life. The truth is none of us has a crystal ball so we cannot predict the exact future post-Brexit – in this article, together with the advice of some of the industry’s leading professionals, we are going, to sum up the whirlwind of information out there and offer some tips and advice when it comes to being a buyer or seller in the current housing market. Research recently released by financial services provider – One Family – suggested that 55% of would-be first time buyers are delaying their purchase due to the political uncertainty surrounding Brexit; and according to the Financial Times, in areas where prices are falling, householders are also waiting to see the outcome of March 29th, rather than commit to anything now. The research, officially released on the 8th of January also showed, however, that 1 in 5 first time buyers will proceed to buy a property before Brexit – with 29% citing they did not mind losing money on their ideal home. Current homeowners have remortgaged loans to the value of £9.2bn, which is the highest monthly total since November 2008. They are taking advantage of a competitive market and are locking in attractive deals now.

Current Housing market First, let’s take a look at the current housing market. The uncertainty that is Brexit is keeping mortgage rates low – which means homeownership is the most cost-effective it’s been in recent years. Sharron Sandey from SWLaw - a Solicitors and Financial Advisors firm based in Ivybridge - explain the drop in prices: “Lending rates are down for the most part as people wait to see if property prices will fall. Nobody wants to buy a new home and see it fall in value in the first year. “Current rates are competitive and are expected to become more so over the next calendar year for regulated and non-regulated loans as lenders try to make up for slow lending in the first quarter. This is a great result for borrowers that can take advantage of the changes.” These low-interest rates are also appealing to first time buyers and household owners who have secured great mortgage rates are locking them in using five or more year fixed-rate deals. According to Paul Stokes from Curwins - a Financial Photo courtesy of Leander Developments

The uncertainty of Brexit is keeping mortgage rates low, which means homeownership is the most cost-effective it’s been in years. This research shows that both first-time buyers and homeowners are pretty 50/50 when it comes to securing a property during Brexit - so what now?

and Mortgage Advisors based in Plymouth: “In the short term we don’t envisage mortgage interest rates changing very much up or down. The fact is that mortgage lenders still have an appetite to lend money and the uncertainty surrounding what will happen this year means the Bank of England will be very wary about increasing interest rates. However it might be a good time to consider fixing mortgage payments now as rates are historically low.” The weakened currency could also make UK property look more attractive to overseas buyers – so any interest in securing a property could come from buyers outside of Britain. According to Rightmove, the window of maximum buyer negotiating opportunity starts to close from Boxing Day onwards, as more buyers become active in the market. This – coupled with the fact that interest rates are at an all-time low – means that perhaps it would be a wise move to start the purchasing process now if you have a substantial amount available for a deposit. Tricia Kennedy from Mortgage 4 Plymouth - a Mortgage Advisors Company based in Plymouth say that first-time buyers are still very active in the market place:

Providing Mortgage & Financial Advice for the People of Plymouth

“Rates are still very low, so buying now will secure a low rate. Due to the lack of supply of housing the market is steady.” This will enable you to get maximum exposure to the surge in interest from people who make it their resolution to move in the New Year. The average amount needed for a deposit is £43,000. When you have been saving for years to buy your first home - it can be daunting to think of Brexit as yet another stumbling block to overcome. Industry professionals are advising both first-time buyers and current homeowners to be clear on whether they are purchasing a home to live in or a property as part of an investment. Because if you plan on staying in your property for the foreseeable future, the whirlwind that is Brexit shouldn’t be at the top of your worry list! And even if there is a short-term price drop, house prices will probably stabilise in the future. Julie Milton from Bright Solicitors - an award winning law firm based in Plymouth - say: “With regard to uncertainty, you can never be certain of what the property market will do in any economy. Property speculation is a fascination of British culture

and the risks surrounding this type of investment never seems to come to a complete halt – even in the deepest of a recession the housing market still move, albeit a bit more slowly.” Recent price drops in asking prices for homes means that it’s becoming more of a buyers’ market, so you might be able to get a good deal. The average price of a UK home dropped by 3.2% between October and December last year, with the asking prices for homes being nearly £10,000 lower than they were in October. This is especially good for people on lower incomes who are looking to buy a home. Paul Stone from Maitlands – an Estate Agent based in Plymouth – explains how they think the next few months are going to be interesting: “The impact of Brexit is unlikely to be instant, but let’s just say the market over the next 18 months dropped 10% - if you’re living in rented accommodation costing you £700 a month, that is £12,600 you have effectively thrown away. sooner you do that the sooner it’s paid off.” The good news is a number of providers have taken into consideration the current housing market and are now offering specialist mortgage options.

Ways to get on the property ladder If you want to move house but cannot quite afford the deposit, the governments Help to Buy scheme could make a big difference. Giving thousands of people a foot onto or up the property ladder, boosting the housing market, shifting new build homes and helping the wider economy are some of the reasons that the Help To Buy Scheme was introduced and it is available until 2020. The principal seems simple on the surface: you still need to save for an initial deposit, but with a Help to Buy Scheme, this is set at a more manageable 5%. Another main selling point is that you do not pay any interest on your loan in the first 5 years. Paul Stone says that:

Please mention The Plympton Community Magazine when responding to adverts

>>> 25

“One of the major advantages of buying a new home is that you can get Help To Buy. It could mean that if you were looking at apartments, you may be able to afford a house. Help To Buy is only going to be available for a limited time, so this is something that needs to be taken into consideration when looking at how soon to buy.” However, there are some limitations to carefully consider. Although you will benefit from 5 years without interest, after this time the rate of interest applied to your loan will increase each year. While you will only pay 1.75% in your sixth year, each year following, your loan fee will increase by 1% plus any RPI increase added on top. You are also limited to only new build properties. There are many pros and cons of ‘A help to buy mortgage’ scheme, and if this is an opportunity you’re interested in we advise booking in with a local mortgage advisor. Many advisors offer free advice to confused first-time buyers, they offer unbiased and beneficial advice to help get your head around it all. Leander Developments offer help and advice on the Help To Buy Scheme for anyone looking to use it. James Bicknell from Leander Developments said: “Even if Brexit slowed or caused a slump to the housing market, the two overarching reasons why the Help To Buy Scheme is so relevant will remain true; the gap between pay and the housing market makes accessibility onto the property ladder difficult for many without some assistance, and property is a solid, long-term investment.” When considering your deposit, often the bigger the initial deposit, the lower the interest rates can be. A lower interest rate could mean your monthly repayments maybe less or you could keep your payments slightly higher and have a reduced mortgage term.

build properties through the Help To Buy Scheme and other affordable schemes. The mortgage lenders are still offering very attractive rates for all home buyers and buy to let investors, so this enables the market to continue to move.” The best way to find out what mortgage option would work best for your individual situation is to sit down with a trusted mortgage advisor for impartial, unbiased advice. If you are looking to sell your property remember the additional fees that come with selling a property after an offer has been accepted. All solicitors are qualified to undertake works of this kind; however, not all are experienced in it. It could, therefore, prove sensible to hire a solicitor who specialises in residential property transactions or a dedicated licensed Conveyancer who only works on cases of this kind. Stamp Duty may also need to be considered. Stamp Duty is paid at different rates, depending on the purchase price. For example, someone buying a property for £245,000 would pay no tax on the value of the property up to £125,000 and 2% tax on the property value between £125,001 and £245,000. The sooner you get on the property ladder, the better. Remember property is also an appreciating investment, so when looking to get on the property ladder – whether it is for the first time, or you’re just looking for somewhere new, remember you are buying a home; so find a property you love, seek professional advice and buy it with the equity or money you have saved so hard for and spend many happy years living in it.

Help to Buy isn’t the only option that offers a 5% deposit. Many lenders offer first-time buyers a 95% mortgage, on any house that’s not a new build. Putting down a 5-10% deposit means you have access to fewer mortgage deals, and your interest rates may be slightly higher – but it is definitely something to consider when entering the property market. Julie Milton from Bright Solicitors says: “We are still seeing a very strong demand for new

hether you love it or loathe it, Valentine's Day isn't going anywhere and the day of love is fast approaching.

Valentine’s Day is primarily known as the day for couples and if you’re not in a relationship, then it’s not for you – but that doesn’t have to be the case. Instead of excluding yourself this year, why not make February 14th a day of self-care? Or a day to celebrate other relationships: like the ones you share with family, friends and even your furry-friends! Don’t dwell on the day just because there’s not a special someone in your life to share the day with, because you can still make this a day to look forward to. So without further ado, here are 14 ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year if you’re not in a romantic relationship:

1

TREAT YOURSELF OR A close relation to dinner

Don’t miss out on the opportunity of a fancy dinner just because you’re not in a relationship! Go out to your favourite restaurant - by yourself, with a friend or a member of family - and enjoy a nice evening out dining. Don’t forget to splash out extra on a dessert, you deserve a treat!

2

PLAN A TRIP AWAY

When was the last time you got away properly? You don’t need to go abroad (although you can if you want to!), just go somewhere different for a change of scenery and also, to give yourself something to look forward to.

3

do something nice for someone else

Although it’s good to take the time to focus on yourself, Valentine’s Day is the perfect day to show your loved ones how much you appreciate them. Just because you’re not in a relationship, that doesn’t mean you don’t have relationships to focus on. Buy a card and write a meaningful message in it for your family or a friend, get your pet their favourite treat, or a new toy to play with; do something that makes someone else happy.

4

try cooking or baking something new

Most people will be whipping up a homemade treat for their significant others on Valentine’s Day, so there’s no reason you can’t. Use this day to try out a new recipe!

5

watch your favourite film

Get your blankets and pillows, gather all the snacks, get comfy and throw on your favourite film - or a new one that you’ve been dying to see - this is the best day to do it.

6

HANG OUT WITH YOUR FAMILY

Do you have a niece or nephew? Or grandparents that you don’t get to see as often as you would like to? Use Valentine’s as an opportunity to spend some quality time with them maybe even offer to babysit your nieces or nephews so their parents go out.

7

buy yourself a gift

It’s not every day that you get a chance to treat yourself. Get yourself something that you’ve wanted for ages but just didn’t want to spend the money on at the time. Buy that new item of clothing, or that new game - do something for yourself.

8

unplug from social media

11

take an excercise class!

12

buy your favourite treats

Let’s admit it, social media can get a little bit annoying with all the ‘lovey-dovey’ Valentine’s Day posts. Maybe use the day to remove yourself from being active online and spend some time reading a new book, or playing your favourite game.

PAMPER YOURSELF!

Take some time to focus on yourself and revitalise the things that you have been neglecting for too long. Whether it be a self-care session at home with face masks and a pedicure, or a day trip to your local spa, do something to treat yourself and your skin.

9

10

PAMPER YOUR pet!

Why stop at yourself? If you have a pet - doesn’t matter what kind of animal you have - take them out for a day of pampering because they deserve it just as much as you do.

This is probably the last thing you wanted to hear, but once you’ve done it, you will feel ten times better. See what your local activity centre has going on and sign up for a class. It’s a chance to get fit and get to know other people, which is good especially if you don’t like working out by yourself!

What’s better than buying your favourite chocolates, drink and snacks and knowing that you don’t have to share it with anyone? Absolutely nothing. Induldge in your favourite treats knowing that you don’t have to half and half the portions.

13

take up the valentine’s day offers available

There will be loads of offers on for couples throughout Valentine’s Day - who’s to say you can’t take a friend a claim to be a couple? Don’t miss out on these deals just because you’re not in a relationship, fake it until you make it!

14

treat it like a normal day You don’t have to focus on the fact that it’s Valentine’s Day, you can treat it like you would any other.

sweetheart chocolate and hazelnut sandwiches

4 slices from a small sliced brioche load, 3 tbsp chocolate hazelnut spread, 1 large egg, 75ml whole milk, 1 tbsp vanilla extract, 1 tbsp caster sugar, 2 tbsp chopped toasted hazelnut, 1 tbsp butter, icing sugar for dusting, ice cream and raspberries to serve

ONE Thickly spread 2 of the brioche slices with the chocolate hazelnut spread, then top with the two remaining slices to make 2 sandwiches. Use a large heart-shaped cutter to cut the sandwiches into hearts.

1 tbsp olive oil, 150g rindless unsmoked fatty pancetta or guanciale finely chopped, 1 garlic clove bashed, 200g spaghetti or fettucchine, 4 good quality egg yolks (2 are optional), 50g parmesan finely grated, a few drops of truffle oil (optional) ONE Heat the oil gently in a large, shallow pan. Fry the guanciale or pancetta and garlic for 10 minutes, or until all the fat has rendered off and the meat is golden and crisp. Remove and discard the garlic clove, then turn off the heat.

TWO Whisk the egg, milk, vanilla and caster sugar in a wide, shallow bowl. Top the hazelnuts onto a plate. Dip the sandwiches into the egg mixture, leave for 1-2 minutes on each side to allow the brioche to soak up the liquid, then dip one side of each sandwich into the nuts. THREE Heat the butter in a wide frying pan until melted and foaming. Add the sandwiches and cook for 1-2 minutes each side until golden brown and puffed up. Dust with icing sugar and serve with ice cream and raspberries.

NEXT LEVEL SPAGHETTI CARBONARA

two Bring a large pan of salted water to a simmer and cook the pasta until it’s slightly firm (cook about a minute less than what the packet says). Meanwhile, whisk 2 egg yolks in a small bowl with a pinch of salt. three Using kitchen tongs, lift the pasta from the water into the pancetta pan along with any dripping water. Use a wooden spoon to stir it into the rendered fat - if the pan looks dry, add a small ladeful of pasta water and mix it in. Keep adding until you see a little pasta water at the bottom of the pan.

four Working quickly, tip the beaten yolks in with the pasta and give it a good stir. Rinse the yolk bowl out with a little more pasta water and pour that in too. Add most of the parmesan and beat again. If it any point it starts to scramble, pour in more water. If you’ve added too much, stir the pasta over the lowest heat for a few moments. FIVE Transfer the pasta to the serving dishes, scatter over the remaining parmesan and nestle the last two egg yolks on top - if using. Season with some salt and pepper, and drizzle over the truffle oil just before serving.

♥ roasted red pepper, sweet potato and smoked paprika soup

♥ parmesan risotta with roasted shrimp

1 pound large raw shrimp, 1 tbsp olive oil 1/2 tsp paprika, salt, ground black pepper, 8 cups chicken broth, 2 tbsp butter, 1 small white onion diced, 4 cloves garlic minced, 2 cups arborio rice, 1/2 cup dry white wine, 1 1/2 cups grated Parmesan cheese, 1 cup finely chopped Italian parsley leaves

1 sweet potato roughly chopped into dice with the skin still on, 1 red pepper de-seeded and cut into chunks, 1 red onion peeled and cut into chunks, 3 garlic cloves peeled, 1 tsp smoked paprika, 2 tbsp olive oil, 200ml coconut milk, 200ml chicken stock, 1/2 tbsp sriracha, 1 tbsp maple syrup

ONE Heat the oven to 200C. Rinse the shrimp and pat them dry. Place on a rimmed baking sheet, drizzle with oil, sprinkle paprika, salt and pepper, and toss to combine. Spread them in an even layer an refrigerate while you prepare the risotto.

two Warm the broth in a medium saucepan over low heat. In a separate, deep saute pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook until soft and beginning to brown around the edges. Add the rice and stir thoroughly to make sure it is coated with the butter and onion. Cook the rice for 1-2 minutes more. Add the wine and cook, stirring to ensure the wine has evaporated.

three Add the warm broth one ladle at a time, stirring frequently. Wait to add another ladle until the liquid has been almost completely absorbed by the rice. If the broth evaporates quickly, turn the heat down so you see a gentle simmer and occasional plop. Expect this stage to take about 15 minutes, and to add most of the broth. four In the last 5 minutes of cooking the risotto, put the prepapred shrimp in the oven until they are pink and cooked through. five When the risotto is ready, turn off the heat and stir in the Parmesan and about 1/2 cup of parsley. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed. Serve the risotto and shrimp together, and add the remaining parsley.

ONE Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. Put the sweet potato, pepper, onion and garlic on a baking tray. Sprinkle with the paprika and seasoning, then drizzle with the oil. Toss together. Roast for 30 minutes or until beginning to brown. TWO Tip the roasted vegetables into a blender with the coconut milk, stock, sriracha and maple syrup. Blend until smooth. Pour back into the pan and heat until piping hot. Check for seasoning and pour into a flask. Serve with soda bread or toasted sourdough.

two Pour the milk and cream into a saucepan with the sugar and vanilla seed. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer, then remove from heat. Take the gelatine out of the cold water and squeeze out the excess, then add to the mixture. Stir until completely dissolved. Tip into four ramekins and place in the fridge to set for a couple of hours. three Serve by turning each ramekin upside-down on the plate.
