T

he Arctic, oceans, polar bears and single-use plastics have all been brought together in a new family activity this winter in Plymouth Britain’s Ocean City. 20 polar bear cubs have been set loose across Plymouth’s waterfront, each with a bear fact that sends a serious message on how single-use plastics are affecting the oceans and the Arctic habitat. With messaging supported by the WWF, the polar bear cubs have been introduced by the business-driven Plymouth Waterfront Partnership (PWP) and their campaign partner the National Marine Aquarium.

For 14 weeks, between 25 November and 3 March, the Polar Bear Explorer will see the cubs hiding at locations across Sutton Harbour, the Barbican, Hoe, Millbay and Royal William Yard, in shops, cafes, restaurants and hotels along the waterfront. Offering a new experience in Britain’s Ocean City, families are encouraged to become Polar Bear Explorers and find each of the 20 cubs. Along the way families will learn about the oceans, polar bears and how they can help to protect their natural Arctic home. Everyone who finds all 20 polar bear cubs and completes their Explorer entry form will receive a Polar Bear Explorer certificate and will be entered into a draw

to win great prizes, including family tickets for the National Marine Aquarium and Polar Bear adoption through WWF. Sarah Gibson, Waterfront Manager and Chief Executive of the Plymouth Waterfront Partnership, said “Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City is a leading waterfront city in the UK, and every year our business community creates trails to provide free family fun and encourage greater footfall. Plymouth is leading the way on efforts to reduce single-use plastics so this year we selected this topical subject to help to encourage our community to make more changes at home, at school and in the workplace. “Shockingly, we’re told that, due to micro plastics, the Arctic is one of the most polluted locations on Earth and with the immense appeal of Polar Bears we wanted to engage families and especially children in learning more about what we can all do to make a difference. “We’re delighted to have partnered with the National Marine Aquarium and to have received support from the WWF and soon we’ll be working with schools.

This trail is fun, free and educational, so we’re now looking forward to seeing how many families will take up the challenge to become Polar Bear Explorers!” Nicola Bridge, Head of Conservation Education and Communication & Marketing at the National Marine Aquarium, said: “The NMA is proud to be a campaign partner of Plymouth Waterfront Partnership’s Polar Bear Explorer trail this winter. We hope to see this engaging family initiative help draw visitors to Plymouth’s Waterfront whilst promoting the importance of caring for our Oceans. “The NMA’s mission is connecting people with our Oceans and promoting pro-Ocean behaviour. We believe that initiatives like the Polar Bear Explorer trail will help to highlight the importance of the marine environment to everyone.” Polar Bear Explorer maps will be available to collect from the Barbican Tourist Information Centre, National Marine Aquarium, Bistrot Pierre at Royal William Yard and Plymouth City Centre Library. NOT VALID on Fridays - Valid until end Jan 2019

PUT YOUR HOME INTO A SAFETY DEPOSIT BOX -Written by David Richardson at Richardson Legal Services A good way to think of a lifetime trust is to think of it as a lawyer created “safety deposit box into which you can place your home, savings, stocks and shares, life insurance and/or any other assets that you wish to keep safe as you go about your daily life. Whilst in the box, you still have full use of the contents and can add to them, sell them, replace them, borrow from them or pass them down to your family as you wish. However, if a third party or outside body tries to claim them, they cannot get access and cannot force you to give them the key. After your death, the safety deposit box (i.e. the trust) and its contents pass down to the beneficiaries that you have chosen to receive them and they can either carry on using the trust themselves, enjoying the same protection that you had, or they can bring it to an end and share the contents out. The reason that a trust can safeguard your assets 10

and property so effectively, is that the law regards the trust itself as a completely separate person to you and, if the property in which you live and the investments from which you receive an income are (in the eyes of the law) owned by someone other than you, it is very difficult for anyone to take them from you. It is also important to note that trusts have been used for hundreds of years to safeguard assets and property and that they are used every day by banks, insurance companies, local authorities and even the government itself. This means that the only way to prevent them being used by ordinary people to protect their own assets and property is to completely rewrite the law. For further information on any of our services please contact Richardsons Legal Services on 0800 014 8031. RLS is fully regulated and insured and approved by Trading Standards.

Ways to stay healthy this New Year... January is here, it’s time to kickstart those resolutions!

I

f you’re still struggling for a New Year’s resolution for 2019, you can never go wrong with starting with the basics. Perhaps you are looking to start the year by looking at changing your eating habits, or maybe you’ve joined a gym/fitness centre and have no idea where to start. Don’t worry, we’ve all been there - and there a plenty of ways of getting into a routine that works for you. With all these things, you have to remember that it’s not just a new diet or a new exercise regime that you are going to fit in around what you’re currently doing, it’s a lifestyle change.

A lot of people view healthiness as eating ‘bland’, low calories foods and spending hours on a treadmill; but it doesn’t work like that. For example, if you just carry on with your regular day-to-day life but then decide that you’re going to start dieting now and do a thirty minute exercise per day on top of this, to begin with, it doesn’t like much at all. But as you go on there will be times where you suddenly can’t fit in your daily exercises, or you don’t have time to prep a healthy meal before work; and then before you know it you’re back to normal because it’s easier than trying to add these new things on top.

14

Remember that fitness isn’t a short-term fix. Nothing will get you completely toned and fit in a month, it takes patience, time, and it definitely shouldn’t be something that you dread every single day. It shouldn’t stress you out (in fact, it should do the exact opposite!), it should be enjoyable, yet challenging at the same time. It should be filling foods that give you energy and fuel your body. And you must always remember that if something is working really well for someone else, that doesn’t mean that it will work for you.

Everyone is different: some see results quickly, some will take longer. Nobody is the same and that’s very important to remember.

Tips on how to keep up a healthy lifestyle: Don’t restrict yourself - A lot of people fail these diets because they tell themselves “I can’t eat this or that, only small, low-calory foods.” When the truth is, that isn’t actually healthy for you at all. There shouldn’t be boundaries on what you eat. Don’t count calories - The thought process behind it is that if you eat less calories, you’ll lose weight and become healthy - and you may lose weight - but you definitely won’t become healthy. What will happen is that you will feel very fatigued and exhausted, and then won’t have any energy to workout. What you want to be looking at are the macronutrients of what you’re eating. There’s loads of information about this online that can properly aid you in your fitness journey Enjoy what you’re doing! There’s no point doing things if you’re not enjoying it! If going to the gym five times a week isn’t doing it for you, DON’T DO IT.

There are lots of different ways to get into a healthier lifestyle. All require a bit of motivation, but a good mindset and dedication can see you through. If you’re struggling for places to start with, then maybe taking up a challenge that thousands of people also take part in will be the right place for a proper kickstart. This month is Veganuary, where the aim of the month is to eat vegan all throughout January. This means no meat, no dairy products and eggs, essentially nothing that comes from animals.

Veganuary launched in January 2014 in the UK. They are a registered charity that encourages people to try vegan for January. Campaign organisers say that following a vegan diet - even if only for a short period of time - can have a lot of benefits, not only for health reasons but also for environmental reasons. The charity says that going vegan can reduce obesity, lower blood pressure, and help to reduce the risk of other health issues such as diabetes and heart disease. They also state how it has a more positive effect on the environment than it would if you were to give up your car.

Did you know... Livestock emissions make up anywhere between 14.5% 18% of total global greenhouse gas emissions.

Veganuary 2018 broke all records! The campaign grew by 183% in 2018, with over 16,000 people signing up to go vegan. 79,000 of which were omnivores. Like previous year, most people signed up because of a concern for animal welfare - but there was also an increase in environmental and health motivations, with the two combined surpassing people choosing Veganuary for reasons to do with animals. But these numbers may be broken again with Veganuary 2019 set to be the biggest yet. But what most people want to know about becoming vegan, is what can you eat?

A vegan diet contains only plants (such as vegetables, grains, nuts and fruits) and goods made from plants

try vegan this January consume anything outside of what you should be. There are also loads of recipes to follow online for anyone struggling for inspiration of where and how to start. With the lifestyle and diet being more popular than ever before. more and more people are opting for veganism over other lifestyles. There are 600,000 vegans in Great Britain as of 2018, that’s about 1.6 per cent of the U.K’s population. But will you be adding to that number this year? More information can be found on the Veganuary website.

A lot of people assume that because vegans cut out so many food groups, that there can’t be a lot left for them to eat, but this is definitely not true. Well to begin with, a lot of standard households will already be stocked with vegan foods without them even realising. Peanut butter, baked beans, dried pasta, tea, coffee, many biscuits you get the point. There has also been a large increase in vegan foods that are available. Supermarkets stock a wide variety of vegan alternatives, including various ready meals - so no, you won’t have to do extensive amounts of cooking if you don’t have the time. The NHS website gives a rough guide of what to eat for a vegan diet, and how to get the various nutrients necessary without having to

Butternut, Red Onion & Pumpkin Seed Salad

Pair the sweetness of butternut and roasted red onions for a fantastic winter side salad. To turn it into a full meal, add cooked Puy or dark green lentils, goat’s cheese or feta and perhaps some strips of roasted red peppers.

3 red onions, sliced into 1cm-thick discs 7 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 1 medium butternut squash, peeled & cut into chunks A few thyme sprigs (optional) 30g pumpkin seeds Pinch of hot smoked paprika 1 tbsp red or white wine vinegar (or use more balsamic) 1 tsp Dijon mustard, or to taste ¼ tsp crushed garlic, or to taste 1 bag of mixed salad leaves (100–150g) Salt & black pepper

Heat the oven to 190°C/Gas 5. Keeping the onion discs whole, place them in a roasting tin and drizzle with a tablespoon or two of olive oil, the balsamic vinegar and a splash of water. Season with salt and pepper. Cover the tin with foil and roast for 30–40 minutes on a low shelf in the oven, until the onions are soft and sweet. Meanwhile, place the squash chunks in another roasting tin, toss with a further tablespoon or so of oil to coat and a good sprinkling of salt and roast for around 30 minutes, until tender and lightly caramelised, throwing in the sprigs of thyme halfway through the cooking time (if using). While the vegetables are roasting, put the pumpkin seeds in a small pan with a teaspoon of olive oil, a pinch of salt and a pinch of paprika. Toast over a medium heat, stirring or tossing frequently, until lightly browned, then transfer to a plate to stop them toasting further. Make a simple vinaigrette: whisk together the vinegar, around 3 tablespoons of olive oil, the mustard and garlic to taste. Season with salt and pepper. Put the salad leaves in a large salad bowl, pour over the dressing and toss to combine. Scatter over the butternut, onions and seeds.

SHOULD I SAVE OR SHOULD I INVEST? Managing your money in 2019

A

ll the celebrations have come to an end: and after all the parties, food and gifts, your wallet is feeling a bit thinner than usual.

The season of giving is over and now that the new year has begun, it's time to start thinking about how you are distributing your cash and to start being smart with money. It's not news, managing your money can be difficult. You think you're set with your ingoing and outgoing, but then life chucks something in the mix that completely throws it off-balance. Taking the time to manage your money will be really beneficial. It can help you stay on top of everything financially and help you work towards your goals: whether they are short-term or long-term. Organising your finances and understanding your lifestyle, income and expenses will help determine whether you should be saving or investing. Obviously you shouldn't be doing either if you have more important things to be doing with your money - such as sorting out debt; but managing your money can at least lay it all out for your visually and prepare you for anything, even if it's unexpected.

START BUDGETING First things first, if you want to become more organised with your money, you need to start budgeting. It's the obvious solution, but it's the best way of creating visuals for when your money will be coming in and going out. Create a monthly budget to stay ahead, but still take into account your weekly spendings as part of this.

24

By budgeting you will: • Be able to see where you can save money. • Know exactly how much will be coming in and going out. • Be more prepared if unexpected costs arise, and shouldn't struggle with paying out as much.

Things you should include in your budget: • Bills (water, electric etc.) - and always account for any unexpected increases in your usual bill prices. • General living costs: food shops. • Insurance. • Birthdays or other events: times where may need to pay out for gifts. • Transport: fuel for car, or public transport. • Other: holidays, eating out, activities (e.g. a gym class, or if you have children, consider any activities they may need money for; like football training). It’s the best thing to begin with no matter what your financial situation is, and then there’s an overview to work from rather than playing guessing games weekto-week.

FIGURE OUT YOUR GOALS Obviously whether you’re saving or investing, it has to correlate with all of your end-goals. You may already have a rough idea of where you’d like to be in a couple of months, or even years down the line, but sometimes it’s completely forgotten how you’re going to afford these things; or you assume that you’ll just be able to afford it when the time comes. It’s better to get an idea of where this money is going to come from now, rather than finding yourself stuck when it’s time to put these plans into action.

Short-term goals: • Start by saving, build up enough for an emergency fund.

Tips to remember when managing your finances:

• Set further goals depending on what you want and where you want to be - e.g. “I want to aim to save £500 a month towards a new car.”

• Budget: it will help you plan out where your money is going and coming from.

Long-term goals:

• Figure out your goals: this will help you figure out where is best to distibute your finances.

• Once your savings grow, start to invest them - you could maybe put money into your pension. • You may want to consider investing in your long-term goals due to inflation affecting the value of cash savings.

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT TO SAVE AND/OR INVEST For one, it very risky to not be saving money. It can put you in some unnecessarily stressful financial situations, and just make it harder for you to continue saving and investing in the future. This is why when budgeting, you must take care to make regular, disciplined deposits into your savings or investments.

Get organised: very self-explanatory and ties into budgeting, but you can’t do one without the other. Make sure you make enough time for yourself to be able to sit down and figure out your finances and budget. • Save, save, save! If there’s something you can takeaway from everything you have read here today, this definitely should be it. If you save, you can invest into your future and aim for a less stressful life. • Cut your spending: little things can make the difference. Buy the non-branded item over the branded; make your lunch for work rather than buying a meal deal or eating out. On average, workers spend about £1580 per year on lunch, think about all the other things that you could do with that sort of money!
