Editor’s Note... Another month, another issue of Plympton Magazine! We’re moving into the second half of the year now, and with Summer Solstice already behind us, doesn’t it make you wonder where the year has gone?! We made the trip up to the Moorland Garden Hotel and met the General Manager, Andrew- who told us all about what the gorgeous hotel has to offer.

Featuring 42 rooms; including 4 luxury suites, the AA rosette awarded Wildflower Restaurant and the Dartmoor Bar- The Moorland Garden Hotel has something for everyone. Given that the 9 acres of grounds are located on the edge of Dartmoor, it is no wonder that it is also a prime location for weddings all year round. The Moorland Garden Hotel has a rich history, dating back to the early 1930’s. Andrew Jenkins- General Manager; explains that Moorland was purpose built to be a hotel, unlike many at the time that were converted from manor houses and estates. “In the early 30’s the primary choices for a holiday would have been city or coastal, so the Moorland was there to offer something different”. The great kitchen team, led by Head Chef Jake Westlake, provides locally sourced food where possible and prides itself on having attained the coveted rosette mark in 2017. Andrew tells us that the menu is broad, ranging from fine dining to a really good burger and chips! “Our Sunday Lunch is proving very popular and runs from 12pm-2pm every week”. Moorland Garden Hotel frequently plays host to special events, having just recently been the venue for a Spring

Garden Fete by Miss Ivy Events. “It was a great day, and rather surprising actually as the weather was extremely good!” Andrew tells us “usually the immediate thought is to head to the coast when Andrew Jenkins the sun is out - so we were admittedly worried about numbers. It ended up being a fantastic day with just over 700 people through the doors”. Andrew explains that Moorland Garden Hotel is also a great location for any birthday party, baby shower or social gathering. “Baby showers have certainly taken off in the last few years! It’s a marvellous idea I think. They are usually held in a private room with a gorgeous afternoon tea - but of course we can cater to whatever the guests prefer”. The lawn at the forefront of the hotel is certainly the perfect space for any Wedding, Summer party or special event. Cared for by Head Gardener Jonathan- it is clear that great pride is taken in the surroundings. The Rose Arbour stands tall, licensed for ceremonies on warmer days- and just behind is the picturesque wildflower meadow. Andrew has been at Moorland Garden Hotel for 3 years in total- and has seen the hotel go from strength to strength. “When I first came here, it was awfully quiet. We have worked hard to turn it around in the past few years, slowly refurbishing the interior and overall image, to get us to be this busy venue with a happy team that is at the core of everything we do. Social media is important to us, it’s key to let people know what you have to offer. We also notice that a lot of our customers come through word of mouth, which is always a good sign!”

Overlooking the grounds and the Wildflower Meadow- it’s no wonder so many people choose to say ‘I do’ here. “We are taking bookings now for 2020 and 2021- and we’ve had some 2022 enquiries which is really exciting. We do have some availability for next summer, but it is booking up very quickly”. Andrew tells us that Laura and Karen are ready to listen to a couple’s requirements and help them to build the Wedding that is right for them, they have a great deal of experience with weddings and helping couples to navigate the sometimes choppy waters of planning a wedding. ocated on Ridgeway in Plympton, Shapla Balti Cuisine is an authentic Indian restaurant and takeaway, offering the finest traditional Curries, Specials, Masala’s, Biryani’s and more. Last month, the OM team went along to give this local hidden gem a try! Written by Libbi Chapple We were all excited for our evening at Shapla- and with the establishment already having such a great reputation in the local community; we certainly had high expectations! Mr Ali and his team went above and beyond to ensure we had a great night. We arrived just after 6pm and were seated near the window looking out over the busy Ridgeway. Mr Ali took our drinks order and brought over our Appetisers, crispy poppadoms and a selection of dips- the tangy mango chutney was my personal favourite. The atmosphere in the restaurant itself is clean, cosy and welcoming. Mr Ali and his dedicated staff are on hand for anything you might need and it’s clear to see that they treat everyone who walks through the door as friends. We were recommended to try the mixed platter as a starter- which consisted of lamb, chicken and pakora cooked in different herbs and spices, accompanied by a side salad and crispy vegetable samosas. Everything was presented beautifully and the smell as it approached your table made your mouth water. One thing we can all say with confidence is that the team at Shapla certainly know their stuff- and can give you honest recommendations based on your taste. Shapla Balti will happily personalise each dish to suit your taste- making it more or less spicy depending on your preference. The portion sizes are extremely generous for the fair price, and the naan breads are amazing. We tried both the garlic and peshwari naan- they were so good we went back for more. The food was bursting with herbs and spices, with just the right amount of heat in everybody’s dish. We all

agreed that it was genuinely the nicest Indian food we have had in a long time. Not to be defeated, we took a look at the dessert menu. A great range of choices from creamy and light coconut ice cream served in a real coconut- to rich Forrero Rocher ice cream drizzled with chocolate sauce.

Shapla Balti were finalists in the British Curry Awards in 2017 and were awarded a Tripadvisor certificate of excellence for three years running. They are a celebrated favourite in the local community and it is clear to see why! Personally, we recommend that you make the time to dine in at Shapla- to really get the full experience, but they also offer delivery to the local area. Shapla regularly host a number of charity events and special evenings, check their website for updates. The OM Team had a great night at Shapla.We ate so much food we left seriously needing a nap! We have all agreed that we definitely need to return, the hospitality that Mr Ali and his team showed not only us- but every customer who entered the restaurant was second to none. It is clear that the friendly, welcoming approach from the Shapla team- along with freshly cooked traditional cuisine is what drives this business forward and keeps people coming back for more.
