OM RECOMMENDS: Shapla Balti Cuisine- Plympton

L

ocated on Ridgeway in Plympton, Shapla Balti Cuisine is an authentic Indian restaurant and takeaway, offering the finest traditional Curries, Specials, Masala’s, Biryani’s and more. Last month, the OM team went along to give this local hidden gem a try! Written by Libbi Chapple We were all excited for our evening at Shapla- and with the establishment already having such a great reputation in the local community; we certainly had high expectations! Mr Ali and his team went above and beyond to ensure we had a great night. We arrived just after 6pm and were seated near the window looking out over the busy Ridgeway. Mr Ali took our drinks order and brought over our Appetisers, crispy poppadoms and a selection of dips- the tangy mango chutney was my personal favourite. The atmosphere in the restaurant itself is clean, cosy and welcoming. Mr Ali and his dedicated staff are on hand for anything you might need and it’s clear to see that they treat everyone who walks through the door as friends. We were recommended to try the mixed platter as a starter- which consisted of lamb, chicken and pakora cooked in different herbs and spices, accompanied by a side salad and crispy vegetable samosas. Everything was presented beautifully and the smell as it approached your table made your mouth water. One thing we can all say with confidence is that the team at Shapla certainly know their stuff- and can give you honest recommendations based on your taste. Shapla Balti will happily personalise each dish to suit your taste- making it more or less spicy depending on your preference. The portion sizes are extremely generous for the fair price, and the naan breads are amazing. We tried both the garlic and peshwari naan- they were so good we went back for more. The food was bursting with herbs and spices, with just the right amount of heat in everybody’s dish. We all

agreed that it was genuinely the nicest Indian food we have had in a long time. Not to be defeated, we took a look at the dessert menu. A great range of choices from creamy and light coconut ice cream served in a real coconut- to rich Forrero Rocher ice cream drizzled with chocolate sauce.

Shapla Balti were finalists in the British Curry Awards in 2017 and were awarded a Tripadvisor certificate of excellence for three years running. They are a celebrated favourite in the local community and it is clear to see why! Personally, we recommend that you make the time to dine in at Shapla- to really get the full experience, but they also offer delivery to the local area. Shapla regularly host a number of charity events and special evenings, check their website for updates. The OM Team had a great night at Shapla. We ate so much food we left seriously needing a nap! We have all agreed that we definitely need to return, the hospitality that Mr Ali and his team showed not only us- but every customer who entered the restaurant was second to none. It is clear that the friendly, welcoming approach from the Shapla team- along with freshly cooked traditional cuisine is what drives this business forward and keeps people coming back for more.

STORAGE

PLYMOUTH Storage Plymouth is the secure, flexible and inexpensive choice for all home, tradesmen, business and student storage solutions. We speak to the Director, Morgan Phillips and his team to see how the business is doing since it opened in November 2016.

S

torage Plymouth, located conveniently on Embankment Road- comprises of 34 brand new 10ft and 20ft, high security storage units. Morgan Phillips; the owner and Director of the company, has an interesting background to say the least! “When I left school I joined the Royal Navy at the age of 17” Morgan tells us. “I went in as a weapons engineer. I loved the whole idea of what the Royal Navy was, what it did, what it stood for; its traditions and its camaraderie”. Morgan explains that it was a phenomenal thing to be a part of. He spent 18 months training at the Engineering College in Portsmouth, then another 18 months aboard an operational war ship before becoming a full member of the crew. Morgan served in the Navy for 6 years until he gave it up for family life. “I married the young lady on the Saturday morning and I left her on the Monday for 7 months to be in a war zone. We decided that being in the Navy perhaps isn’t the right career for a happy married life, so I left. Part of me really hated leaving, but it’s what I had to do at the time”.

During his time in the Navy, Morgan had gained extensive knowledge on military systems. After leaving the Navy and keen to expand his skills, he enrolled on a course at Plymouth College to become fully qualified as a civilian electrician.

In 1992, Morgan was employed by Thorn Security as a Service Engineer. As a result of completing a self

funded NVQ level 3 in Security Systems; Morgan’s determination didn’t go unnoticed. He was offered a stepping stone in his chosen career path, and made the move to London to become Dave, Lisa and Morgan a Training Officer for Thorn. “I moved to Richmond in London to pursue my new role. I was essentially teaching engineers what I knew and oversaw training programmes. In 1996, I was one of a five strong team to aid in writing the Home Office guidelines for the new CCTV laws in public spaces. It’s obviously since moved on from that, but it was quite exciting at the time”. The next stepping stone came a few years later when Morgan was approached by the overseas department, asking if he would like to become a Project Manager. “At the time, my wife and I were in the process of getting a divorce. When I was offered a complete change, I took it. It helped with the recovery process so to speak. I had two young children at home, so my main concern was to make sure I had a safety net- enough money coming in to ensure they would be okay”. “The reasons for working overseas completely outweighed the doubts. As a project manager I oversaw developments all over the world. I was based in Beirut for a year, Abu Dhabi for a further 3 months and Dubai for 18 months, but it was nice to know I had roots back in Plymouth. I always felt Plymouth was where I wanted to be. Although I was overseas for long periods of time, I liked the idea of having a solid piece of land, a home in a place that I loved”. Fast forward to 2016, Morgan takes out a 15 year lease on the land at Embankment Road from Plymouth City Council. Originally to be utilised by GIUK- Guardian Industrial, Morgan realised that the company was expanding fast and the space wasn’t sufficient for their growing needs. This is the point where Morgan decided to take a leap of faith- and start a new branch of the GIUK Group; Storage Plymouth. “Whilst doing our market research, we found out that

12

there are at least 17 storage companies in and around Plymouth, so the main question was; how could we be different- what could we offer as additional services to enable us to stand out from the competition?” We offer additional services alongside standard storage solutions. We will help you move your belongings into our high security, brand new unitsand access to your unit is 24/7

“We have made sure we have a selection of sizes of containers so you only pay for the space you need. Our 10’ Containers are ideal for tradesmen wanting to store materials, yachtsmen who want to store their equipment for the winter, members of our Armed Forces who are deploying overseas and need to store their belongings whilst they are away”. “We are signed up to the Armed Forces Covenant and as such have pledged to support the employment of veterans, young and old, Reservists and their families, as such we are able to offer a 10% discount to service personnel on production of ID”. Morgan doesn’t work alone, and has a dedicated and hard working team to enabled smooth day to day running at Storage Plymouth. Dave, the General Manager has been working alongside Morgan since 2006. After serving in the Army for 25 years, Dave applied for a General Manager Vacancy at Guardian UK- and has been with the company ever since. “We also have Lisa who is our Deputy General Manager and Export Manager. Lisa has been an asset to the team for the past 8 years”. Moving on to the facilities on offer, Storage Plymouth ensures the highest security measures are taken to ensure their clients belongings are safe.

The security of your possessions is our highest priority. Our entire site has 24 hour CCTV monitoring and surveillance along with 24 hour security guard monitoring and benefits from a high security perimeter fencing. Rest assured, your belongings are safe with us.

All of the containers at Storage Plymouth are GraftoTherm coated to avoid condensation and to keep your belongings safe. Morgan explains that they can even

Comfortable reception area with toilets and a coffee machine

supply your container with electricity and water! “We get a lot of workmen and tradesmen as regular clients. We had one carpenter ask if we could provide power to his container and he turned it into a sort of man-cave, he’s got a desk, worktops, a radio, a kettleeverything he needs!” “We cater for private clients who are moving house, and maybe only need to use us for a month, we have students who need somewhere to store their stuff for the summerwe cater for anyone really”. Prices start from as little as £15 per week for a 10ft container and £24 per week for a 20ft container. Morgan explains that their contracts are very flexible and they only require 7 days notice when you no longer need the space. “We are on hand to help you unload your belongings in and out of the container and can liaise with removal companies if you require them”. Perhaps it is these extra services on offer and the extensive security measures taken, that has seen Storage Plymouth go from strength to strength in its two years of operation. Taking this into consideration, where does Morgan see the business in the future? “I would like more containers, that goes without saying. We’ve just had two more 20ft’s delivered, and they have already been filled”.

Storage Plymouth currently has 34 containers, in both 10ft and 20ft capacity. “We saw a lot of companies were offering the larger units, but many people don’t need that amount of space. We found a gap in the market and essentially filled it”.

There is demand we just need to keep up with that. I would love to be able to offer a car park here; and then eventually expand to other sites, perhaps Ivybridge, Plympton, Saltash and Tavistock.

Whether you need to store personal items, keep excess furniture or declutter the office, Storage Plymouth are inexpensive, flexible and easy to work with- and can offer you the perfect solution.

John Rio has over 30 years experience in the financial planning industry and having previously been involved in a number of business modelshas taken the plunge and decided to go it alone. Utilising his knowledge and expertise in Wills and Trusts, Plymouth Will Writing Services was started up in January of this year.

A

secure updated Will is something we should all take into serious consideration- and Plymouth Wills is looking to help guide people through this process by providing help and advice on wills, lasting powers of attorney and trusts. Having these in place can secure your assets and protect them against the hostile creditors, and other unforeseen situations that can happen in your future. The idea is to ensure you and your family will have control of your hard earned wealth and that you are the only ones who ultimately benefit from it.

John Rio has over 30 years experience in the financial planning industry. Having previous taken over his father’s insurance brokerage in 1994; and consequently selling it in 2002- John gained an invaluable interest in the financial side of the business. Building upon this interest, John kept hold of the financial side and gained an associate in 2002. The duo set about creating seminar programmes and aimed to gain clients of all age groups- dealing solely with inheritance tax and investment issues. John and his associate’s clientele grew as a result and they naturally moved into financial planning services for more mature people. “We realised a need for services such as inheritance planning and long term care planning. Westward Asset Management Ltd was established in 2003 to cater solely for our clients needs. This is where my first contact with wills and lasting powers of attorney were made. As this need grew we saw the benefit of transacting this class of business through a separate company and in 2011 Westward Trust Services was formed”. John and his associate were the directors of Westward Asset Management Ltd and Westward Trust Services for the following 15 years- until they took the decision to sell the business. Not wanting to carry on with what was initially a joint venture, John made the bold decision to start up his own business- and so Plymouth Wills Writing Service was formed. Working together with our very own Graphic Designer,

16

John Rio

Tom- John came up with a brand new company name, logo design and branding package. John Rio tells us that going it alone wasn’t without its difficulties. “Firstly, being by myself was a huge challenge. You have no one to bounce your ideas around with However, John overcame this by becoming a member of the society of Will Writers- a non profit making, self regulatory organisation whose primary objectives are the advancement, education and ethical standards within the will writing profession. “Plymouth Wills is an accredited member of the Society of Will writers and they provide me with my continuous professional development. Last year, the society wrote 20% of all wills in the UK. They are a major player in the game so it’s great to have them backing me. The will writing course took me right back to basics. I’m actually still learning because the industry constantly changes, but I do really enjoy it. They provide me with all of my professional development through online blogs and Webinars and in house training days”. When we last spoke to John, he told us that his target demographic was what he called ‘Middle England’. “People who’ve never had anything who eventually require care, will have that covered for them by their local council”. On the opposite end of the spectrum, if you’re very wealthy with pension funds then you don’t have to worry about care because you’ve got the funds to cover it. Middle England are the people who get affected, because they could potentially lose out on a lot. “Middle England is still my target market, but I also want to stress the importance of younger generations thinking about their financial assets. It is important to understand what will happen to your estate if we die without a Will. FOOD FOR THOUGHTIF YOU ARE SINGLE: You might want your estate divided amongst friends, relatives and charities of your choosing and in the proportions you want. IF YOU ARE MARRIED: Don’t assume “my other half will get

Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk

everything”. Brothers and sisters or parents may have a claim. If you are living as a couple but not officially married, you may be treated as a single person and a surviving partner may not get anything at all. One thing you can be certain of – there will be arguments and disputes at a time when the family should be coping with the loss of a loved one. IF YOU ARE A PARENT: You should consider who you would like to look after your children in the event of your death. This is particularly important in the case of one parent families or unmarried parents living together. A valid Will nominating guardians is invaluable in such cases. If no one knows what what you would have wanted, the court will decide on the future of your children, and it may not be what your children would have wished. IF YOU ARE RETIRED: Maybe you made your Will a long time ago. It probably needs updating to include additional grandchildren or deletion of persons you no longer feel you wish to leave anything to.We advise reviewing your Will every 2-5 years to take into account changes in circumstances. It’s not just the older generation that have to consider the services I offer. If you are young and taking out a mortgage, you’ve got to consider your financial future. As well as Wills, John also offers Lasting Power of attorney for as little as £79. “There are two types- property and financial affairs and health and welfare. My own personal opinion is that a health and welfare attorney is just as important- if not more, as financial. If you are not of sound mind and health, you want someone who can make decisions to benefit youthat will be in your best interest”. John stresses the importance of considering an attorney whilst you are fit and healthy, rather than to wait until health issues arise. “If you are on that slippery slope, then it will be a lot harder and a lot more expensive to ensure an attorney is put in place”. It also takes approximately six weeks for the registration process to be completed with the Office of the Public Guardian. John works primarily through home visits, although he can also be seen at his home office, and makes special arrangements such as hospital or care home visits. “People are more comfortable in their own homes, I want to break that barrier of the unknown with all the lingo and terms. Sometimes people don’t understand what a will can do and how it is ultimately for your benefit. I offer a free half

an hour initial meeting to all local prospective clients and I do not charge for home visits”. Looking to the future, John explains that if the business was to take off- he would consider sourcing an office to operate from. “My main concern is that I don’t want it to get to the stage where the business is controlling me, I want to be in control of the business. I want to show that I offer a local, friendly service and that I genuinely care about my client’s needs and worries”. There is also a strong demand for other services that we offer, in particular Funeral Plans and Probate services. FUNERAL PLANS A plan to deal with the most personal and sensitive of your family affairs and alleviate the financial and emotional burdens that naturally accompany bereavement. Some of the reasons why people purchase funeral plans: • At a time of sadness, you will have relieved your family of a financial burden. • Savings in bank or building society is just a sum of money. Your executors are not obliged to spend it on your funeral and it may not keep up with the rising cost of funerals. The national average cost of a funeral has increased by 90% since 2004. Source: The Sun Life Cost of Dying Report 2017. • Putting your funeral wishes in your Will is not binding upon your executors – they do not have to carry out your wishes PROBATE SERVICES Probate is the process to establish ownership of an estate before the tax is paid and the assets are distributed. The responsibility for probate lies with the executors of a Will who often appoint a professional firm to take the responsibility. Executor responsibilties include: • Interpreting the Will • Identifying all assets & liabilities of the estate • Obtaining valuations of all assets • Preparing tax returns for the deceased • Settling all debts of the estate • Completing and filing of all court forms This can be daunting for many executors so we have the ability to recommend a trusted partner of the Society of Will Writers, SWW Trust Corporation who are able for a highly competitive fee to take on this responsibility. If you require any advice or guidance on Wills, Lasting Power of Attorney, Trusts, funeral plans or probate issues John is available for a free initial consultation to help you with any issues you may have.

Gavin Jones Consultancy- proven growth for SME’s As the driving force behind GJC, Gavin has helped numerous companies with growth and development throughout his 20 year career. Gavin Jones Consultancy focuses on small to medium businesses all over the UK, and the team work alongside entrepreneurs to help them make better decisions, convert those decisions to actions and deliver the sustainable success they desire.

E

stablished in 2014, GJC specialises in supporting SME’s through business analysis and planning. Working alongside business owners and entrepreneurs- GJC can offer assistance on the most critical issues including strategy, organisation, sustainability and increase in revenue. Speaking to Gavin Jones, Director and Owner; and Sian Jones, Office Manager, we gain a valuable insight into the workings of GJC and how it all began. Gavin explains that initially he has a strong background in the hospitality management industry. “I am Plymouth born and bred first and foremost. I went to Seal-Hayne College and completed a degree in Hospitality Management, which was a faculty of Plymouth University at the time. Once I graduated, I moved to London in 2001 and worked for a number of hospitality chains- Café Rouge for example as a General Manager and gradually working my way up to area manager”. Gavin was based in the South East for the next 15 years, gaining a wealth of experience in a number of different establishments. “I was extremely career driven when I was younger” Gavin admits. Eventually, Gavin grew tired of the hectic lifestyle and made the move back to his hometown, ready to set down some roots in the city he grew up in. “Living out of a suitcase for 80-90 hours isn’t much fun. It’s rewarding in regards to salary but your social life takes a real knock and there’s only so much of that a person can take”. “My experience in the South East was a great education for what I do now; it taught me the fundamentals and laid the foundation so to speak. I was essentially the General Manager of a million pound hotel at the age of 21, straight from graduation. I was completely accountable so of course it taught me a lot”.

30

Gavin made the move back to Plymouth and purchased a training company, for which he had previously been involved with. That company eventually went into voluntary liquidation, which Gavin explains taught him a lot about failure. A lot of people shy away from their failures. I use it as a selling point when I approach companies and say, you can’t really do what we do for a living unless you’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly! “After the company went into liquidation, I licked my wounds for a while and ended up helping some friends who had operational issues in their business. There was a turning point where I thought- hang on, I should monetize this advice! It wasn’t something I planned, I just sort of fell into it”. Gavin Jones Consultancy was established in 2014, and currently consists of 9 team members across the UK. Gavin explains that all of his associates have been in a business that’s been in distress. “Either they’ve owned or been involved with a situation that has had difficulties. At the end of the day we do the hard yards for our clients so we’ve got the battle scars. We know because we’ve been there”. GJC runs primarily off of a 6 stage pyramid structure, an operational model that Gavin spent years refining. Focussing on fundamental elements of a business such as target markets, employee engagement and systems and process, GJC often work with fledgling businesses who have a rock solid idea with room for growth. Using the ever popular McDonalds brothers as an example, Gavin explains that the problem with most successful businesses is that they grow too quickly; and are therefore more likely to fail. “A Big Mac in Tokyo is exactly the same as a Big Mac in the UK. This is because the McDonalds brothers were the most systemised people in the world. Drawing their kitchens out on tennis courts and getting the staff to mime their actions, this ensured they would survive in the chaos. Most SME’s don’t do this; they run with the chaos until it gets on top of them. There is no consistency- no system”.

Call The Plympton Community Magazine 01752 691007 | www.plymptonmagazine.co.uk

The South West is thriving; I don’t know how many people really recognise that. The construction industry, hospitality and service type industries are all thriving. Yet, there are companies out there that have hit a sweet spot, that have a niche- servicing that niche really well and are growing quickly. They are going to need some support to sustain that growth, and that’s pretty much where we come in. Gavin explains his and his associates’ roles are as a ‘critical friend’ to the business in need of their services. “You don’t have skin in the game so you are not blinded by profit, sales or exit strategies. You’re purely there to give your opinion and to ensure the business is on track”. “My favourite analogy is that of a personal trainer. You pay them to count to 10 whilst you’re holding a work out. You’re quite capable of counting to 10 yourself, but let’s be honest- you’re going to count to 8, quickly- because you’re tired. We are the personal trainer; we are the critical friend helping you to success”. GJC offers business accelerator courses, running out of Boringdon Golf Park. These consist of 12 modules, running once a month for 12 months. “At GJC, our business is in helping your business to thrive – and we have the team to do it. We have condensed all of our combined experience into one 12-month course”. Gavin explains. The course consists of group coaching sessions, delivering GJC’s pyramid scheme delivered in bite size pieces. Gavin tells us that the course consists of individual, tailored advice bespoke to the business owners needs. “One of my clients, who owned a £300 thousand business, recently had the opportunity to bid for £1 million worth of work- and he did it. By the end of this month he will have a £1.3 million business and myself and my team will have the correct structures in place to ensure this is successful”.

Moving on to the process, Gavin explains that the best way to get in contact is through the company website. “You can fill in your details and request information and we will call you back for a chat. The next stage would be for us to come and visit you on site, understand how you operate and conduct a bit of fact finding on your business”. Gavin stresses that not everyone is a fit for their services. “We will assess the business and sometimes, not everyone is right. There are certain sectors that we can’t necessarily help with. We are not going to take your money and give you advice if we 100% do not believe we can add value and drive it”. The amount of time GJC will spend with a business completely depends on their needs at the time. Gavin explains that the longest running client to date has seen 4 years of GJC’s support, whereas the shortest time frame is just 12 months. “I helped a contracting company that had a very transactional business model. We turned that around so they were more contract based- therefore a nice and predictable cash flow. When we took the business on they were worth just over £200,000. 12 months later and certain systems in place- it’s just under £1 million turnover with a recurring income of approximately £750,000”. Given that GJC has had an exceptional growth in its 4 years of business, where does Gavin see the business in the future? He tells us that he would ideally like to see the company grow to a further 50 associates around the UK. “This ultimately means that our internal network of skills and expertise can continue expanding, and the client can spend more quality time with one of our associates”. GJC’s next available Business Accelerator course is running from Boringdon Park, on Thursday 26th of July. If you would like to gain some valuable advice from Gavin and his team, or book a place on the course- head over to their website and enquire.

GJC has a trusted board of partners that they can call upon to help when needed. “They are ambassadors for us, and we are ambassador for them. When working with our SME clients, we realise that as a firm we don’t have all the answers! We have a ‘trust board’ of proven professionals to help us, and our clients, with everything from HR management, accounting and marketing. Some of GJCs trusted partners include local firms such as Kitsons Solicitors, Bromhead Chartered Accountants, Vu Digital Marketing Agency and Apex HR Ltd.

The next Business Accelerator Course starts 26th July at Boringdon Park
