Editor’s Note... Is summer over already? September means the start of Autumn, although I have memories of being sunburnt this time last year, so perhaps the sunshine won’t be leaving us just yet (we can only hope!) I’m sure that many kids are excited about going back to school. The new year is always fun, particularly if they’ve stocked up on shiny, new stationary! Or maybe you have more grown-up children who are starting university, and we wish them all the best with their studies. Check out page 24 for our tips on how to prepare. We’ve been spoilt with events in Plymouth over the last few months, but it doesn’t end here. It’s time for the Ocean City Festival and there are many fun events happening over the course of two weeks. See page 21 for some of our highlights.
Melissa
We hope that you enjoy our September issue!

Looking After Your Garden In Preparation For Winter The cold, harsh weather can take a toll on your garden that has thrived and blossomed in the summer months. Autumn is a great time to undertake essential preservation jobs and protect the more fragile plants. Take a look at our handy guide to preparing different areas of your garden to guard them from the upcoming winter months.
Protecting Soil
The winter season is a great time to build up your soil foundation. Plant a cover crop to provide ground cover. A mulch blanket will also prevent bare soil sprouting those pesky winter weeds and retain moisture, as it is a layer of insulating organic materials layered on top of the soil surface, acting as a protective cover before the harsh elements begin. In case of snowfall, do not worry as it can in fact be good for the garden, insulating and carrying nitrogen to the soil.
Composting
To make good quality garden compost, it is best to have the right mix of browns and greens. In your browns, add items such as autumn leaves, shredded newspaper, bark, vacuum cleaner contents and even hair.
Plants suitable for wintery conditions in Devon, such as exposed coastal gardens subject to strong winds that thrive in challenging conditions, include dragonfly, blue barlow, cuprea and primrose. Some autumn-flowering bulbs and winter bedding plants that are also able to brave the winter months include dahlia, begonia, snowdrop, crocus, wallflower, pansies and violas.
Vegetable Gardens
Most vegetable gardens and patches can house winter crops. The ground is warm enough in September for seeds to germinate quickly, so this is a great time for late autumn sowings. Some examples of crops to try are Christmas potatoes, rocket, mustard, leafy vegetables, garlic and broad beans and peas. Keep plants well-watered, hoe between rows regularly to keep them free of weeds and cover the salads and leafy plants with cloches for protection from the frost.
In your greens, throw in fruit and vegetable waste, eggshells, teabags and coffee grounds. Be careful never to include items that will produce bad odours and toxins such as meat, fish, dairy products, fat, the waste of cats or dogs, or weeds with seeds. Grass clippings can also be put in your compost if you have not sprayed chemicals on your lawn beforehand.
Fruits
Tender Plants
Remember to apply a fresh layer of mulch - around 2 inches thick - to lock in soil moisture. Trees including olives and lemons must be lifted into a greenhouse, and wrap hardier specimens in insulating material.
Some tender plants simply need a thick layer of mulch added between September and November. The mulch doesn’t protect plants from the cold, but in fact keeps roots cold and protects exposed soil from freezing and thawing. Avoid fertilising tender plants any later than mid-august and water carefully, as plants growing in soggy areas struggle in the cold winter, and ensure they are planted in a sheltered spot or in pots so they can be moved inside for worry-free winter protection. Tender perennials such as canna, gladioli and caladiums will have to be stored inside at the first sign of frost. Take precaution to minimise frost damage by protecting them from the morning sun and feeding with a balanced fertiliser.
Hardy Plants
Cold-hardy perennials such as peonies, coneflowers, iris and catmint are tough enough to withstand freezing conditions. Before winter, trim back dead foliage or stems and surround with a few inches of mulch and water during prolonged dry winter periods to prevent root damage.
6
Raspberries are a suitable plant that can be planted over the winter period, ensuring the soil is not frozen or drowned. Use winter as an ideal time to remove weeds from the base of fruit trees to eliminate hidden pests, remove rotting fruit from branches to prevent infection of the other fruits, and replace rotten stakes or tree ties.
One problem of the fruit garden in winter is the possibility of overwintering pests that pop up during summer. A treatment to combat these insects is by spraying a winter tree wash or using a glue band to stop egg-carrying moths climbing into the tree’s branches.
Wildlife
Don’t forget about the wildlife this winter! Before turning your compost heap, check for frogs, toads and other small animals. If you have a garden pond that has frozen over do remember to make a hole in the ice for any fish and frogs, or toxic gases may build up and harm the animals. Place a small saucepan filled with boiling water on the ice sheet to create a hole and release the gas. During the cold season, birds may also find it difficult to find berries, insects and seeds, so any extra food put out will help vulnerable animals survive the cold.

EURO MILLIONS PEOPLES INTERNATIONAL POSTCODE LOTTERY FRAUD The National Fraud Intelligence Bureau has seen an increase in Action Fraud reports where victims receive a letter from a company claiming to be the ‘Euro Millions Peoples International Postcode Lottery’. The amount of money they say you have won is typically £720,000 and the letter is usually signed by either ‘Peter LLOYD’ or ‘Johan NELSON’, with an address for the company similar to ‘202-205 Rue Wiertz/Wiertzstraat, Brussels B1099’. The letter may ask for a fee to release the funds or ask you to provide your personal details. A Plympton resident received one of these letters as recently as July 2016. So, please be aware. If you have received one of these letters, please notify Action Fraud. Protect yourself: • Never respond to any such communication. If you have not entered a lottery then you cannot have won it. • Any request for a fee payment is a good indication that someone is trying to defraud you. • Never disclose your bank details or pay any fees in advance to anyone or any company who you are unsure of. If you need to report a fraud, please call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or use the Action Fraud reporting tool, via the website - www.actionfraud.police.uk

BUSINESS PROFILE Malcolm Harrison is perhaps the most eccentric and unique accountant you’ll ever meet – something which he admits himself. We’re invited into the offices of MH Associates, which sit above the Tudor Rose Tea Rooms on the Barbican in a building which dates back to 1640. MH Associates offer bookkeeping, accountancy and payroll services to small-medium businesses - they are a company that really cares about their clients. Treating everyone as he would expect to be treated himself, Malcolm Harrison prides himself on his ability to keep hold of his clients and he makes himself available to meet them at any time of day outside of regular working hours. Born in 1951 to a Barbican family, he has plenty to tell us. For over 100 years the family business, Harrison and Sons Ship Chandlers occupied premises on Southside Street, so Malcolm really has brought his business back to his family roots. At school he took an interest in teaching, so studied for his degree and went on to spend ten successful years as a junior school teacher, first in Hertfordshire and then back in Devon. Eventually he decided to move on from teaching and headed back to his home city where the government helped him to retrain in accountancy and bookkeeping. In 1983 he got a job with British Rail. Not wanting any responsibilities he was quite happy to be a stores clerk working at Laira Depot. But after just a few weeks he was promoted and given more responsibilities, and in 1991 he became the area Materials Manager. As Malcolm tells us his past, it becomes apparent that being a part of various unions is very important to him. Whilst working on the railway he became a union rep for the clerical staff, and he was and still is a member of the Transport Salaried Staffs Association. In 2012 he was given a gold medallion in recognition of his long service which resulted in him being awarded with honorary life membership. He started to develop an NVQ qualification for Storekeepers on the railway and in 1994 an opportunity arose for him to apply for a grant from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust (www.wcmt. 14
org.uk). This was setup as a living memorial to the great leader and each year applications open for particular categories. The grant enables British citizens to travel abroad, research inspiring practices and then bring that knowledge back to the UK for the benefit of others. In that year a Training and Education category was open for applications. Malcolm was keen to head abroad to investigate the training of staff on railways to identify best practices and to bring them back home. Malcolm’s application was successful, so he used the grant to travel to Hong Kong and Australia. Malcolm learnt a lot and avoided hotels so that we could stay with locals and understand their way of life. He discovered that Australia mirrors the UK transport industry, and he took home valuable knowledge and experience to implement at Laira Depot upon his return. Unfortunately he was later made redundant with 50% of the other managers at Great Western Trains when First Group took the company over in 1998. He went to a job centre with his CV, but found it difficult to convince them that he managed a £30 million a year budget. He took up a position within a travel tour agency, and in his spare time he used his previous experience of bookkeeping to help a local accountancy practice. In 1999 the owner of the accountancy practice offered Malcolm the opportunity to become his

- MH ASSOCIATES business partner. The following year he decided to setup business on his own and he formed MH Associates. He started off with a very small clientele and still works with some of those clients today. He has built up his business with over 400 clients, some of which are based overseas and he deals with every single client offering a bespoke service. Every six months he’s invited to London to be briefed on the latest changes in tax legislation by Price Waterhouse Cooper, the country’s leading accountancy firm. Malcolm also knows some of the special advisors within Parliament and the House of Lords, and has given advice to MP’s in the past. “Through being a Winston Churchill fellow I’ve become a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and that’s opened doors to me. I’m in and out of the House of Lords quite a bit”. As the Queen is patron to the Winston Churchill Trust, Malcolm was invited to meet her in March 2015 on the 50th anniversary of Churchill’s death. He tells us it is customary to accept an invitation from the Queen, so following an email asking if he would be available to meet her, he received his formal invitation in the post which he is currently having framed by a client.
Malcolm Harrison and then found himself running a business in the industry with many loyal clients - we’re impressed. “It’s called the University of Life”, he tells us with a smile on his face. “You make mistakes and you learn from those mistakes”. It seems that life experience, wit and a unique personality have brought him very far indeed.
Back to his business, Malcolm tells us that “I’ve always had a vision of a one-stop-shop. If someone comes into me I’m able to provide them with payroll, self-assessment, you name it I’ll try to do it”. He describes his business as “generalist”. “95% of my clients I can do everything for, but there’s a small percentage of those where I need to bring in extra expertise”. He uses those around him and their skills to assist him with his business. For example if someone needs pension advice, he knows who he can send them to for help, and he uses solicitors that he works with regularly and can trust. We finish off by asking Malcolm how he learnt everything he knows. He was trained in accounting

Assistants at Hand - Enabling Your Independence Home is happiness, home is where the heart is, home is where you feel safe, and where you feel cared for and supported. Assistants at Hand truly care about helping others in the Plymouth area. They will enable you to live in your own home and maintain your independence, by assisting you in your day to day activities. Assistants at Hand was started due to personal experience of poor home-care providers by company Directors and cousins, Lisa Battershill and Vivien Dunne, for their close family members (Lisa’s mother and Vivien’s grandmother). Their experience of seeing numerous carers per client (Lisa’s mother received 20 different carers in a one-week period) and lack of personalised and dedicated care, coupled with their extensive experience in the care profession, inspired them to start their own domiciliary care company in the Plymouth area. Their determination for dignified and familiar assistance for clients has lead to the development of Assistants at Hand. They are a viable alternative to full-time residential care, with the added bonus of their clients being able to remain independent and living in their own homes. They can provide a 7-days a week, personalised service catering for you and your needs. Assistants at Hand are unique in that they can assure that their clients will only ever receive a maximum of 3-5 Assistants (dependent on number of calls required). They believe that it’s important for their clients to feel comfortable in their own homes, and by only using a small team of Assistants per client, they can make sure that this is the case.
They have a holistic approach to their care, which means that they don’t just care for their clients but they can also take away the burden of maintaining their clients’ homes to enable continued independent living. They work together with local companies such as ACD Electrical Services Ltd., of whom all technicians have a Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS) checks. They will also arrange appointments from hairdressers to a range of beauty treatments through their in-house beauty therapist.
A GPS system means that they always know where their Assistants are. The system gives clients or their family reassurance and peace of mind that their care is top priority. Assistants at Hand use the very latest technology to allow family members and other healthcare professionals (with clients permission) to check on their well-being via a cloud-based portal. This can be done anywhere in the world at the touch of button and gives reassurance that all is well.
One of their big ambitions for the future is to open a day-care centre in central Plymouth. The centre will host a range of activities from crafts to dancing and cookery. There is a need for a day-care centre with a difference – dedicated pick-up and dropoff services, wholesome home cooked food and afternoon teas. Providing this service will give a much needed break for family care providers whilst reassuring them that their loved ones are in capable and caring hands.
Assistants are available 24-hours a day to provide any assistance that may be required. If emergency care is required the client is connected straight to the on-call member of staff directly. This allows clients and their family members to be reassured that there is always someone to provide assistance, whenever it may be required.

Are They Ready for
University?
Going to uni can be difficult for teenagers. Make it easier for them by teaching them everything, from boiling an egg to washing clothes to managing their money...
SET UP A STUDENT BANK ACCOUNT
INSURE THEIR STUFF
It’s important for students to set up a student account, rather than continue with their regular current account. Fees are much lower, the banks are generally kinder and there are often freebies involved.
You’ve had home and contents insurance for years, but it’s probably not something your kids will have taken notice of. Remind them to get themselves covered and explain the importance of protecting their possesions. Student halls and houses aren’t immune to flooding and fires, and those without insurance could lose everything should the worst happen. Endsleigh is reccomended by most universities as they’re tailored specifically for students. Check out their gadget bundles, and they have options to add on extras such as instruments and sports equipment.
Remember, it’s okay for a student to use their overdraft facility, as long as they use it wisely. Student accounts are the only type of account to offer fee free and interest free overdrafts, so students won’t pay back more than they borrowed. This facility usually lasts for a few years after graduation to give them time to pay it back, before regular fees and interest rates start to apply again. Some of the best deals this year: Santander - free 4-year railcard to save money on train fares HSBC - £60 Amazon voucher, up to £3,000 overdraft limit and they won’t allow you to go over your set limit (no scary fees) Natwest - free 4-year National Express coachcard 24

STUDENT EATING HABITS Your teenager could be a fantastic cook, in which case, you have little to worry about when it comes to them eating at university. However, some students have trouble boiling an egg. Make sure that they know all the basics before they head off - baking potatoes, easy pasta sauces, quick and simple meals, freezing and defrosting food and cooking on a budget. Take them on their first food shop. This is easiest on the day you help them move in because they’ll start getting to know their local supermarket. You might want to spoil them but try to avoid doing so - teach them clever budgeting tricks.
STUDENT LOAN TALK Hopefully your son/daughter has been through the entire process of applying for student loans and are awaiting their first payment. Many quickly forget that this amount needs to last them until the new year. If your child is receiving the full amount available, it will need to cover their rent and food for around four months, so teach them to put aside enough to keep a roof over their head and food in the kitchen so that they can see how much they have leftover for spending.
Check out Asda’s Student Shopper Cards. You keep one and your son/daughter keeps the other. When you top it up the balance transfers to the student card for them to spend in-store. You’ll know how much is being spent and won’t worry that they’re going without food.
If you’re supporting your child financially, transfer money regularly and of a certain amount. Remember, they’re studying most days, probably won’t eat like a king and student bars often charge only around £2 a drink. Teach them to budget by only sending them the money they need. It may be tempting to step in when problems arise, but these money lessons will stay with them for life.
LEAVING THEM TO IT
It would be very tempting to invite your child home everytime they call and sound a bit panicked, but they need to settle. Heading home every weekend will only mean that they miss out on important bonding time with new friends. If they really are floundering, a visit home wouldn’t be a problem, but remind them that you’re only ever a phonecall away and sometimes that can relax a homesick student just as much. On the other hand, don’t be surprised if you rarely get a call in those first weeks. The most outgoing students will dive into university life with ease and will be busy exploring their new home.
LAUNDRY LESSONS They might help out around the house, but would you trust your teenager with your washing? Student halls will have a laundrette and there will be washing machines in shared houses, but a lot of students start university without the knowledge of how to do their washing properly. To avoid them sleeping in the same bedding all year or having more clothes in the wash basket than in the wardrobe, teach them a few simple lessons: • • • •
How to split clothes into whites, darks and colours What can and can’t be tumble dried How to wash delicates How to use detergent and fabric softener
Tip: Pack them an airer for hanging wet clothes to dry

OL! BACK TO SCHO
Kid’s Packed Lunches It’s time for the kids to head back to school for an exciting new year, so why not take the opportunity to get them into healthy eating habits? Healthy doesn’t need to mean ‘boring’. Show the kids how tasty and colourful good food can be, and keep them going until home time! Chop up fruit and sweet vegetables such as carrot and cucumber to make them more appealing to kids. A mini fruit salad pot will go down well, and smaller ones will appreciate a sliced up apple rather than trying to tackle a whole one. Some children are more likely to eat chopped up fruit, so give it a go and box it up to keep everything fresh.
If your kids love omelettes, try them with a cold, savoury frittata slice. Frittatas are much thicker than an omelette and use more eggs and toppings, but they’re made in very much the same way. They usually don’t require flipping though – simply pop the pan and frittata under the grill to cook the top. Leave them to go cold, then slice up for lunchboxes. Kids yoghurts are often full of sugar. Instead, purchase a large tub of natural yoghurt and scoop some into a small, lidded container. Top it with berries, chopped strawberries and banana for a tasty, healthy snack. Spread soft cheese into a flour tortilla, then pile in cold chicken (try leftovers from the Sunday roast chicken), sliced avocado, grated carrot and tomatoes. Roll it up and wrap in foil to keep it together and fresh. The flavours are plain enough for picky children, and the carrot and tomatoes give it some sweetness. 28
Cut pitta bread in half and lightly toast. Open it up into a pocket and stuff it with salad, chicken or turkey, veggies – whatever your child might enjoy. It’s a great way to sneak in a few of their 5-a-day, and makes a change from sandwiches.
Flapjacks are a fantastic treat and they’re very budget-friendly. Make a big batch on Sunday and these snacks should see you and the kids through the week. Standard flapjacks are usually made with oats, sugar, golden syrup and butter, but a quick internet search will bring up lots of recipes, many with healthier ingredients! Experiment and see which ones the kids love.

Separating when you have older children
E
veryone knows that separating when you have children is tough. Who tells them, how do you tell them? Is there a better time to tell them, in the morning, in the evening, during the school holidays?
Do you stay together for the sake of the children, their emotional stability and their education – maintaining the family structure for security? Or do you believe it will be better for everyone concerned, in the long run, if you and your partner separate?
Do children react differently at different ages?
There’s no easy answer to that, of course. At the end of the day a sterile atmosphere with estranged parents trying to rub along can be as difficult as the shock of a separation.
You could argue that a younger child might handle separation and divorce better, as they are able to adapt quicker to the new situation. But how does separation affect older children? This is a tough question to answer, because every child is different. Teenagers, however, are going through immense change in their own lives. Their bodies are changing and their brains are developing. Emotions are all over the place. School has become more intense, with important exams looming, GCSEs or A Levels. Teenagers are more on the ball than young children in terms of seeing through a situation. If one parent has embarked on an affair, for example, a teenager may well have picked up the undercurrents already. This acuity does work in a positive way, too. Teenagers may have been aware for some time of the cracks in their parents’ relationship. So a discussion about separation might come as no surprise. If you are the parent of teenagers, what do you need to think about if you are considering separation? For more information please visit: www.thefamilylawco.co.uk Email: enquiries@thefamilylawco.com
If you do decide to separate, the absolute key is to try to keep clear of the ‘blame’ culture. As hard as this is, if your children are the most important thing in your life, it will make sense. Don’t ask a child to choose which parent they love the most – they won’t be able to. As carefully as you handle it, you may have to bear the brunt of anger, tears, criticism, coldness. Even in current society, the image of a happy, ‘normal’ family unit remains a strong one, although this is gradually changing. It’s important that you don’t have a tantrum yourself if the teens kick up. Remember that you are the grown up here. This might be a time to keep your own tears for private, or for times when you are with your close friends. The adult needs to be strong and offer stability, even if it is thrown back in their face. No one is kidding you that this will be easy, but teenagers are young adults. They can adapt and they will, at some point, be able to understand that you are allowed to have your own happiness. Feng Shui Your Home Feng Shui is a Chinese discipline which can be traced back several thousands of years. It’s the art of placement – the idea that the careful positioning of objects and the things around you can help to channel positive energy. The Feng Shui Society describes it as, “The art and science of designing harmonious environments based on the profound Chinese understanding of how people are connected to and affected by their close surroundings.” The discipline has become popular in modern times, but in the past it would help identify safe places for families to live, and choose the best burial sites for the deceased. Over the years, buildings and even entire cities in China have been designed with Feng Shui in mind. Feng means wind, and Shui means water in English. The perfect balance of these creates harmony which is where Yin and Yang come in. The Yin-Yang symbol is a popular one but one many of us don’t understand. It symbolises balance between two opposites. This could be dark and light, movement and stillness, etc., and there should never be too much of one or the other.
Plants represent growth, prosperity and luck according to Chinese tradition. Rounded leaves have a calming effect, while plants pointing upwards encourage a boost to succeed – pop one on the desk if you’re growing a business or looking to ace an exam.
Another basic concept is Qi. This is the energy generated by thoughts, emotions, water flow, air quality and colour, and these forces influence how a place and its inhabitants feel. Then there are the five elements – water, wood, fire, earth and metal. These can be physical or metaphoric and can be used in various ways to influence their surroundings.
Avoid sharp corners. Rounded, soft shapes are more harmonious.
Why should the principles of Feng Shui be implemented at home? It’s used to increase wealth, improve health and relationships and protect against misfortune. It can bring happiness and energy and make those living there feel comfortable, settled and closer with nature.
The entrance of your home is where positive energy can flow in. If you use a side or back door as opposed to the front door, try to change this so that energy flows into the home correctly. Keep it clutter free, and make it look inviting with plants and a clean doormat. Good light and a clear door number will encourage positivity, ensuring that people can find your home easily. 34

Consider the connotations of a colour before splashing it onto the walls. Yellow may seem sunny and bright, but it’s far too harsh for a bedroom. Blue is soothing, and green is healing – nature’s colours will make you feel more relaxed.
Water means wealth – good water brings it in, bad water takes it out. Fountains should always run and sinks should have a plant next to them. The drain symbolises wealth leaving the home, and the plant (a wood element) balances this.
If you live by a river or stream, it shouldn’t run behind the home as it symbolises missed opportunities, nor should it flow away from the home as it’s a sign of loss. Instead, it should run at the front of the house, in full-sight of the front door.
Keep electronics out of the bedroom. If you must keep a television in there, keep it far away from the bed and drape a pretty scarf or piece of fabric over it when not in use. Please mention The Plympton Community Magazine when responding to adverts

Tips & Tricks at the Supermarket How many times have you got the till at the supermarket and been surprised by how much you’ve spent? And how often do you leave with bags of shopping when all you needed was milk? The supermarket has plenty of tricks up its sleeve to entice you to spend more than you might intend to, and when you’re on a budget, this is bad news. Regularly bought items are usually placed towards the back of the store, so that customers popping in for a pint of milk have to walk past a lot of tempting products before they find the aisle they need. Eye-level products are usually the most profitable for the supermarket, but these often aren’t the best deal for you. Look on top and bottom shelves for better deals. Sometimes bold, colourful signage and tickets are used on products to make them look like they’re on sale, but they’re not. Check prices before picking up something you think is a bargain, because it could actually be full-price with clever labelling. If you buy luxury or branded goods, try the supermarket’s own-brand. Quite often the ingredients are very similar, or exactly the same, and you might not even be able to taste the difference. You can save a lot of money if you do this with your entire shop. Don’t shop on an empty stomach! You’ll find yourself loading up the trolley because everything you see will be tempting if you haven’t eaten for a few hours. Complementary products are often displayed together to encourage you to buy more. For example, you might find tubs of cream next to strawberries, and it’s no coincidence that teabags are situated near the biscuits.
If you only need to pop in for one or two things, don’t grab a basket. They’re placed very conveniently, and sometimes you might even have a member of staff hand you one, but it will only encourage you to spend more than you intended. Beware of multi-buy deals. Sometimes it’s actually cheaper to buy the product separately. For example, a four-pack of tinned tomatoes could cost £2.50, but a single tin might only cost 60p. BOGOF deals are only a deal if it’s something you would usually buy. They’re also great for things like toothpaste and shower gel which don’t go out of date and are useful to have stock of at home. Otherwise, steer clear of them. Check out the cost per kilogram on the shelf tickets when buying loose fruit and veg. You might think that buying loose is cheaper, but sometimes the opposite is true.
