With fitness ideas and wellbeing advice, be sure to check out ‘Health After Lockdown’ on pages 12 & 13. Now that gyms are back in full swing, there is uncertainty surrounding the safety of gyms. We interviewed Fort Stamford Health and Fitness where it was clear they have gone above and beyond to protect their members from Covid-19. Follow the history of the club in an inspirational story and find out more about Fort Stamford and their safety measures. (Pages 6 & 7) The disturbance of the pandemic has drastically affected local businesses; therefore, we have gathered together some local events, from markets to photography classes and more, see page 19. What better way to support your local businesses than to take a short break in Devon or Cornwall and explore what your local area has to offer! We are so fortunate to have an abundance of stunning scenery here in the South West so head to pages 26-28 for some unique ideas. I hope you have a wonderful September!

Dedication, a few helpful connections and a strong passion for squash is the reason why Fort Stamford and it’s four squash courts are still here today. The backbone of Fort Stamford belongs in the hands of one very hardworking and unstoppable man, Royston Sumner. A sense of community and diversity is at the heart of this club, and Royston and his team have gone above and beyond to make Fort Stamford a very safe gym at this time of uncertainty. We spoke with Royston to discover how Fort Stamford Health & Fitness came about, a little bit about his background and the important measures they have in place to reassure their members during the coronavirus pandemic to make this club one of the safest in Plymouth.
S
quash and more latterly Racketball, are at the very heart of this health club. As a junior, Royston played when it was just a 4 court squash club sited in the dungeons of the fortress. 10 more courts were then built, with a pool and snooker room, in its moat over 40 years ago. Royston was a high profile squash player, he moved to Paignton in his mid 20’s as an insurance loss adjuster, captained the county squash team and was playing for Newton Abbot squash club at that time. It was the social side of the sport that he found almost as appealing as the sport itself! In the absence of a manager, he continued to help the owner of Fort Stamford, Ray Larson, by running tournaments, the shop and the junior section at the Fort but this was difficult given the distance involved. The heydays of the sport had passed along with the drink culture of that era. The financial viability of the club was grime. At the sprightly age of only 26, following discussions with Ray about the Forts future, Royston was not able to resist the chance of running the club himself and agreed to lease the premises in an attempt to revive the sports fortunes. “So, I gave up my suit and tie job and that was what happened.” Said Royston.
Owner Royston Sumner
Royston was never a wealthy man so his visions for the club were always thwarted by a lack of money. So long as he kept squash running, that gave him the sense of achievement he longed for. With his first loan from the bank he fixed the showers, court floors and reconfigured the bar area. More and more people came back to play squash after these changes and sure enough the club grew. Royston said, “It was a difficult concept, losing courts to save courts but that’s what I had to do!’ With Royston’s second loan from the bank he transformed a few of the courts into a typical 1990’s style gym which gave him the money to keep the remaining courts open. In 2008, not knowing the banks were on the verge of collapse, Royston embarked on a huge building project only to find the bank renege on their funding agreement. It knocked him off his feet. Royston was at the lowest point in his life where he almost lost everything. Every bank in Plymouth turned his request or monies down. Out of the blue, a ‘chap’ from Barclays in Newton Abbot phoned him up one day. In this fluke of luck, the ‘chap, Steve Reynolds, from Barclays also happened to be the treasurer of Newton Abbot Squash club and had admired Royston’s running of the Fort over the years since he left his club. After a long day going through the project he bought into Royston and not just the business, authorised the loans and effectively saved the health club from financial ruin. With new funding, he refurbished the health club, added a jacuzzi, sauna, toning salon, and extended the pool to make it what it is today. With the investment, members came flooding in, he paid the final payment back to the bank in October 2019. Just the mortgage to go, or so he thought. Royston’s debt was not over yet for then came Coronavirus, the biggest pandemic of our lives and

has forced Royston to invest further, this time in safety measures. Approximately £25,000 in fact! Royston and his team are eternally grateful for the support that the members have given during this time, this gradual flow of income enabled Fort Stamford to survive, pay the bills and to put in place the measures that members would have wanted to ensure it was a safe place to return. “I want to emphasise that the measures in place at the Fort ensure that this gym at least, was not an environment that most gyms are perceived to be” said Royston. Fort Stamford has taken some extraordinary precautionary measures above and beyond any gym we’re aware of in Plymouth. They are using products produced by TECcare called Ultra, Control and Daily to treat all surfaces. They are water based, environmentally friendly, non-corrosive and doesn’t irritate skin. The product is applied with a spray gun which statically charges the product so that it completely envelopes the objects being treated, even the most complicated parts of gym equipment. This spray has been applied to every single bit of equipment, flooring, toilets, and all touch points and handles. This will continue to kill germs for up to 3-4 weeks. As an added precaution, they re-apply the product every 2-3 weeks for members safety. When you enter the club, your temperature is checked with a thermal imaging camera to ensure you don’t have a fever. There are disinfectant bottles located in all areas of the club available for you to wipe down any equipment you have just used. This spray provided, unlike most, won’t remove the Ultra spray from the equipment. There are plenty of hand sanitising stations dotted throughout for your personal use. Fort Stamford have also invested in a new sophisticated air ventilation system which kills all harmful germs in the air. This works by using ultraviolet light which kills the germs instantly
important measures that make a clear statement that this club is a very safe club to come back to’’ said Royston. Fort Stamford wants everybody to feel welcome, the young and the old. This diversity gives a great sense of community. The staff really do care about you and your health. Their membership includes the use of all the facilities but if you want to change your lifestyle, you need to exercise on a regular basis. It’s not just a question of what you do but how often you do it. When there are lots of things to do, it makes exercising regularly easier! Membership includes the use of the courts, the gym, classes, toning salon, pool and spa. Royston said, “We haven’t put prices up at Fort Stamford for 30 years to existing members. It’s a loyalty thing, if you’ve supported us then we’ll support you.” “With most other gym’s you have to pay for advice for this and advise for that. At the Fort it’s all included in your monthly price, no add-ons and of course, we offer so many more facilities” said Royston. Members can book via reception or online using a convenient App. Non-members book direct with the club. If you are not technically minded, you can just turn up at reception, however you run the risk of the activity being fully booked. Being healthy and keeping active is one of the most important things you should be doing especially given the current coronavirus pandemic. Not only will it get you fit and help you reach your goal weight, but exercise has so many benefits to your mental wellbeing, keeping you engaged, clearing your head and enabling you to make clearer decisions. For more information on how to stay healthy after lockdown, head to page 12. Future plans are to provide an extended reception area and the dream of a reinstating a glass backed court. Racketball has been reintroduced a sport so much easier to play than squash. It was proving really popular prior to lockdown, particularly with women. “I’m hoping that before I retire, Racketball will become more popular ensuring the viability of the courts and therefore the future of squash, the very reason I took the club on 30 years ago” said Royston.
and then re-disburses it as disinfected air. Walking around Fort Stamford, it is clear that they have taken all of the precautionary measures and more to be able to reassure the concerned or elderly members that this is a very safe gym and club to be in. “They were expensive measures, but they were
It is clear that the passion of one man and his team has given this gym a new injection of life when it needed it the most, we were certainly impressed with how sophisticated and safe the entire environment was on our visit, and we are sure you will be too. HEALTH AFTER LOCKDOWN Finding a new normal can be challenging, so we are sharing some of our ideas on how to stay healthy after lockdown.
E
arlier in the year, we were told very abruptly to stay at home, wash our hands frequently and avoid any social interactions with people outside of our household. The biggest pandemic of our lifetime was happening right in front of our very eyes, and it was to no-one’s surprise that we saw a considerable rise in mental health cases within the first two weeks of lockdown. Let’s face it, we have had a whirlwind of a year already which has certainly taken a strain on our health and wellbeing. It is now more important than ever to keep our bodies healthy but not forget our minds as well.
MENTAL HEALTH Schools are set to begin again in September and for some children, they haven’t been to school since March. To say they have had a change to their lives is an understatement. The government has observed children as being very versatile, they can adapt to changing situations very quickly but this doesn’t mean it won’t affect them at all. Children and teenagers may react very differently to starting school again. Each and every pupil would have suffered a loss over lockdown, whether that be a relative who has passed or a loss of social interaction and routine. If you are a parent or teacher, look carefully for signs of withdraw, anger, sadness or anxiety as everyone will react in different ways.
The same can be said for adults returning to work. There are plenty of specialist websites or phone lines you can contact or refer to if you are worried about yourself or your loved ones. For example, Samaritans and One You & Anxiety UK. The main thing to remember is that listening is enough. If you are not confident speaking about mental health yourself, allow another person to be able to speak to you. It can take a while for someone to open up to you, so start by talking about a common interest you have perhaps. Talking is the best way to take the weight off your shoulders. Meeting with friends and family outside of your household is still restricted to 1 metre however we encourage you to meet up for a socially distanced catch up as we are a nation that has been deprived of this for quite some time. As we mentioned previously, talking is one of the best ways to reduce stress and ease anxiety which will, in turn, benefit your mental health. Completing mindfulness activities like sports, meditation, yoga; anything that enables you to concentrate on that particular hobby is a great way to distract the mind from any worries or anxieties.
EXERCISE During lockdown, there has been an increased number of people nationwide who jumped on the home workouts wagon or taking more time out of their day to do a form of exercise. Now that our schedules are slowly filling back up again, it is so important not to neglect exercise. There are a wide range of walking routes in and around Plymouth for your use. Plymouth’s Waterfront Walkway is a great route that starts at Admirals Hard and finishes at Jenny Cliff. There is a free map you can download on www.southwestcoastpath.org.uk which gives you an easy-to-follow route that even
12

the kids can follow! This walking trail will take you along Plymouth’s Maritime environment as you walk the famous South West Coast Path, enjoying the stunning views on the way. If you fancy going somewhere more manicured, head to Saltram. Grab a picnic and take a leisurely stroll across the regal grounds of the Estate. The paths are ideal for kids and easily accessible for wheelchair users. Saltram is owned by the National Trust therefore, unless you have a membership, it will cost you £8 for adults and £4 for children to enter the gardens and an additional £3 for parking. Pre-booking is required. If you are after a slightly faster paced adventure, why not try out one of Devon’s many beautiful cycle routes.
Fort Stamford Health & Fitness centre offers a lifestyle, not just a gym. With fitness classes, a swimming pool, squash courts and a conservatory overlooking the Plymouth Sound, this is all included in the membership price. For more information and re-assurance about Covid-19 and the safety at Fort Stamford, head to page 6. It is virtually impossible to live in a coastal city and not explore the range of activities on the water. Mount Batten Watersports & Activities Centre offers a wide range of supervised sessions to get you on the water. They are providing TryKayak and TrySUP sessions for mixed abilities and ages which is great fun for the family.
Plymouth Bike Hire offers a wide range of bikes with prices starting from £10 for a child’s bike and £15 for an adult bike. If you are worried about Covid-19, all bikes are sanitised before and after every hire. This is located at the beginning of the Plym Valley Trail which you can join for free. If you own a bike and are wondering where you can take it for a spin, try Cann Woods. Situated near Roborough, Cann Woods is predominantly for the mountain biking enthusiasts with a range of trails and features including twists, turns, jumps and even some berms. There are also tracks which are wider and steadier for the whole family to enjoy. If you are thinking of doing something different, try out the Cann Woods Segway experiences and glide effortlessly through the trees taking in the surrounding woodland. With Gym’s re-opening across the country, there are plenty to choose from in and around Plymouth. The array of gyms caters for different interests and abilities; from weight-lifting, boxing and health clubs as-well-as chain gyms.
Healthy Eating With restaurants now open again, this is the time to support your local business and indulge in your favourite foods. Many restaurants and pubs now have a takeaway system in place so if you plan to meet a friend for a socially distanced meal, grab yourself a takeaway and eat it outside together as a picnic instead. The Hoe is a great place to enjoy a picnic whilst soaking up the views of the sea. Take advantage of the digital age and try out some of the free apps on offer for both Android and IOS devices. For apps dedicated to mental health look for; Calm, Headspace and Meditopia. If you are searching for workout motivation, iprescribe Exercise gives you tailored exercise plans based on the information you supply. If you are looking for an app that could change your lifestyle, look for Deliciously Ella, Sleep Cycle and Smoke free. All these apps are free and the changes you make will have a positive impact on your daily life. Make the most of the eases of lockdown and stay fit and healthy, in both your mind and body. There are endless possibilities for you to get outside and enjoy what Plymouth has to offer. With more places opening up day-by-day, it has never been more important to support local businesses and take care of your wellbeing.

LOCKDOWN HAS GIVEN US ALL A CHANCE TO RE-EVALUATE
D
for a chat. A Power of Attorney can make things, like shopping easier, especially as we are being encouraged not to use cash. It safeguards you and those you wish to help you.
uring lockdown we have all had the opportunity to re-evaluate what is important to us and the exceptional circumstances that we have all been through may have presented you with a chance to make a change to an aspect of your life.
Wills – Whilst it has always been important to make sure that you have a Will in place, the recent pandemic has made even the most confident amongst us think about their mortality and for this reason the Law Society has reported a significant increase in people choosing to make a Will. By making a Will you can also help to reduce the Inheritance Tax payable on your death as a solicitor can make sure that you leave your estate in the most tax efficient manner. It can also be used to reduce liability for nursing home fees in the future.
Property - It may well be that whilst being confined to your home you have realised that you have outgrown it or simply want something different. Despite initial fears that the property market will slump following lockdown, it has not. In fact there is a resurgence and properties are selling fast and in most cases for the full asking price. Business – Covid has inevitably had a significant impact on the majority of businesses, but this hasn’t been entirely negative. Lockdown has meant that many businesses have had to adapt the way that they are run and some have taken full advantage of the change in people’s behaviour and discovered a gap in the market, maybe even an opportunity to start a new business.
Family - Lockdown may have placed your relationship under strain and this can be particularly difficult if you have children. We are here to help you with any changes you may wish to make following Covid-19.
Powers of Attorney - Each and every one of us has had to rely on another person during lockdown. It may be a family member, a friend or neighbour to pick up your prescriptions, do your shopping or even just be there at the end of the telephone or through a window
We are an experienced team who have continued to be there for our clients for over 100 years, even through lockdown. Please do not hesitate to contact us to see how we can help.

AUTUMN EQUINOX Tuesday 22nd September
The Autumn Equinox is an important event that everyone can celebrate. Read on to find out more about what it is, the harvest moon, celebrations and more!
T
he Autumn Equinox is a special time for those who celebrate the beginning of Autumn. Many go out and take a glimpse up at the blissful moon that lights up their land or coastline. Just make sure you are ready on the 22nd of September! WHAT IS IT? For those of you who may not be entirely familiar with what an Equinox is. It is two moments in the year when the sun shines directly on the equator and where night and day are nearly exactly the same length – 12 hours – all over the world. This is the reason it’s called an “equinox,” derived from Latin, meaning “equal night” (depending on location).
the last of their summer crops in the prolonged evening moonlight before winter came along. TIME FOR CELEBRATION What better way to celebrate this transitional time of year by marking the September equinox with a harvest festival? That time of the year when all the crops have been harvested, the Harvest Festival is a celebration of the food grown on the land! The people of the British Isles have given thanks at Autumn harvest festivals since pagan times. Harvest festivals traditionally were held on the Sunday nearest the Harvest Moon. STONEHENGE Archaeologists believe a number of prehistoric sites were used by ancient people to track the position of the sun and predict equinoxes and solstices. Some of these sites include Stonehenge and Newgrange in the UK!
HARVEST MOON / CORN MOON Although the harvest moon is on October 1st this year, every 3 years to be precise, (most years it is in September) it is highly associated with the autumn equinox too! September 2nd is also a time for the corn moon to take place so get ready to look up at the night sky for an exceptionally bright moon.
Each year on the 22nd / 23rd September Druids, Pagans, families, tourists and travellers gather at Stonehenge early in the morning to mark the Spring Equinox and to see the sunrise above the stones. It Is definitely a great spiritual experience!
Did you know? Because the moon is particularly bright and rises early, in the past this allowed farmers to extend their working day so the name ‘harvest moon’ comes from when farmers harvested

Vegetables are super! Raising awareness of Men’s Cancers is at the heart of everything we do, and for 20 years we’ve aimed to make a marked difference to men’s health across the region.
W
e believe that when dealing with a cancer diagnosis you can feel utterly lost and out of control of your own body, and we really want to help men through this initial step, and what can help is to do something you can control in your life. It’s not only empowering, but it’s a big positive step to take when everything seems so negative, so we are helping men across the region access the best diet possible. In a pioneering pilot project for the South West, we will be working with Riverford Organic, giving 250 men who are newly diagnosed with prostate cancer, two free veg boxes and a cookery book to set them on a more healthier journey, helping to not only take back a little bit of control, but to help live well during cancer treatments. We will be launching this project at two local hospitals this autumn and also following this up with a special support group taster session, where patients can learn about different veg and how to cook them. More than 47,000 new cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed in the UK every year, that’s 129 men a day yet less than 30% of people know where the prostate gland is, let alone what it does, so a lot of work is still needed. The success of the Chestnut Appeal is a testament to what can be achieved if we work together as a community. Over the coming years, we aim to improve these vital services and do much more in the area, helping reach more of the community. We have a lot to be thankful for, and a huge amount to do in the future to ensure men’s health is continually talked about, that the South West corner of the UK isn’t forgotten about and, that we’re able to attract the very best technologies to the area. This is why we hold events like our swims, and this is why we encourage groups and clubs to fundraise for the charity, so we can keep our vital work going and help as many people as possible in our area. During the pandemic charities have suffered in fact, UK charities are struggling to cope with a £10bn shortfall caused by soaring demand for
30
their services and lost fundraising income due to the coronavirus pandemic, a study by Pro Bono Economics, an independent charity, shows. Over the years we’ve realised that Men’s Health suffers from an imbalance and at the core of our work is highlighting this most common cancer in men, as well as Prostate Cancer, we also raise awareness of Testicular Cancer and Penile Cancer, two other quite treatable cancers that sadly if left can be devastating. We believe it is vital to get more men talking about their health and taking action when they feel like something could be wrong, and a lot of our time is spent out in the community giving free talks and seminars about these three cancers. We also run a local support group online and in the community, we try to be there to help as much as we can. So please consider supporting your local charity.
