FATHER’S DAY GIFTING IDEAS Father’s Day is fast approaching, June 20th to be exact, and it’s always challenging finding a gift that your father will enjoy and cherish for a long time. An easy option would be to hop to your local department store and pick out something from the Father’s Day section, however, I have found some gift ideas that really say ‘I thought of you’ and are something he will never forget.

F

ather’s Day can be a difficult time for those who have lost theirs, those who long to be a father or fathers who have lost their children. Take June 20th as a time to remember those fond memories and spend time with the people dearest to you. Adding some fresh flowers to their grave or perhaps an artificial personalised wreath makes for a heart-warming gesture.

Local Gift Experiences One way to ensure that the father in your life never forgets this Father’s Day is by treating him to a gift experience.

Perhaps Cider is more to their taste? The Stable, located on Sutton Harbour offers a cider tasting board with 5 delicious local pressed ciders. The cider goes down very nicely with one of their fresh pizzas or pies overlooking the Barbican. BrewDog offers a wide range of gift opportunities for craft beer lovers. As well as a choice of beer bundles delivered to your door, you can also get bar gift cards to spend at BrewDog Plymouth, located in The Barcode. If heading up to Bristol isn’t an issue, they offer a beer school where you can have an ultimate guided tasting experience!

Taste the gin on our doorstep by booking one of Plymouth Gin Distillery’s tours. Learn about the history of Plymouth Gin, the process of making the gin and you can even make your own gin! There are three tours to choose from, one is the tour of the Black Friar’s Distillery, the second is called The Gin Connoisseur’s Tour where you have a tour of the Distillery and an in-depth blind tasting of five gins and the third is the Master Distiller’s Tour where you get a tour of the distillery, a blind tasting and become a Distiller and create your very own gin.

If they are hopeless in the kitchen or love cooking but want to learn some new skills, you can gift them a cookery class. Just above Exeter houses Devon Cookery School where you can get classes for as little as £25 up to a full day class costing you £145. A little closer to Plymouth is Ashburton Cookery School where you can get course vouchers ranging from £80 upward to the value of £895 for a 5-day cookery course! For the golf lovers, treat your father this Father’s Day to a golf experience at one of our local golf clubs. You can get monetary gift cards to spend on golfing equipment or you can get a choice of different golfing experiences. Planning for a garden party this Father’s Day? Add in a bit of friendly competitiveness with a mini golf course in your back garden! Portable Putts offer a range of different sized courses starting at £75, that are fun for all ages. Who says these gifts are just for your father to enjoy? You can purchase a spa day experience or massage at one of our local spas and spend the day relaxing with your Dad! Capturing a memory in time is something we all cherish. PL7 Studios in Plympton offer affordable family photoshoots and prints you can take home afterwards. Have your printed images professionally framed for a timeless gift.

deciding what to put in a hamper. Whether that’s cinema night treats, delicatessen nibbles, home spa kit or even whisky related. To begin making your hamper from scratch, you will need a box or basket big enough to fit everything in, some tissue paper or any kind of filling you have around the house and some string for the finishing touch! Now that the high street shops have re-opened, try shopping local to support those businesses that weren’t allowed to open during the third lockdown.

Creating a hamper can take a lot of time to execute, especially if you need to go to a different store for every item. There are many different pre-made hampers or ones you can personalise yourself online from retail outlets such as hampers.com, prestigehampers.co.uk and etsy.com. If you have a specific theme in mind, you can then search for a closely related shop. For food-related hampers, search for Cartwright & Butler, M&S, Yumbles, The Cheese Wedge etc and for spa hampers, have a look at Cowshed, The White Company, The Body Shop, Kiehl’s or Ted Baker.

The Plymouth Market is home to a fantastic array of shops and restaurants, perfect for a local gift or two for Father’s Day. Fry’s Farm Shop have a wide range of local produce and ales which would work perfectly as a hamper. They have also collaborated with a neighbouring stall and put together some socks and a local ale to buy for £7.

Quality gifts Support your local high street shops when you can through this difficult time, particularly for independent business owners. A gift that keeps on growing. Have your dad become a new father all over again with a new plant to look after. Bud Houseplants have an array of quality plants and plant pots at affordable prices in Plymouth. Treat your dad to the bike they’ve always wanted. Puffing Billy Cycles, based near Dartmoor, supplies premium road, mountain and electric bikes as well as bike parts and accessories. For those smarter occasions, blame LILY, located in the Plymstock Broadway, have a brilliant men’s section including designer

watches, cufflinks, necklaces, scarfs and ties to choose from. The best thing we can do for the economy of Plymouth and the welfare of independent businesses is to shop locally. With the brilliant array of shops in Plymouth, this doesn’t mean we have to compromise on quality. With everything re-opening and beginning to feel somewhat normal again. It’s time to give your father the Father’s Day they missed out on last year! We hope these gifting ideas have inspired you to make it a Father’s Day they won’t forget.

PRIDE MONTH: AN INTERVIEW WITH LUKE POLLARD June marks pride month, a month where we can learn from the past and celebrate how far we have come as a nation towards equality. We spoke with Luke Pollard, Plymouth’s first-ever openly gay Member of Parliament to find out more about our city and its LGBTQ+ community.

P

lymouth has an incredible gay history that dates back hundreds of years but Plymouth hasn’t been able to tell its full story in the way it would like to as the history has always been obscured or hidden by legal persecution or through not wanting to embarrass or hinder. Only until very recently, in the past 40-50 years, we have been able to begin to tell the story of our gay history in Plymouth. Pride month in Plymouth not only celebrates the successes within the community from the first LGBTQ+ bookshop on Mutley plain through to those who ran the early gay nightclubs and bars on union street but so much of the history has been of sadness such as the murder of Terry Sweet and the attack on Bernard Hawkin in Central Park, 25 years ago. The brutal murder and the appalling homophobic graffiti that accompanied it, threatening further violence to gay people, was a changing point that brought people together and raised the visibility and the determination to fight for nothing more than equality. Luke is currently working with Pride in Plymouth to have a memorial for Terry and to be able to unveil it this summer. They organised a crowd funder for Terry’s memorial and it was so successful, they raised well above what they needed to have a fitting memorial in the park. The memorial

will be a moment to reflect not just on the murder but on Terry and Bernards life and to be able to reflect on the progress that has been made from those events 25 years ago. Plymouth has changed drastically recently by moving OMG, GOSSIP and The Swallow onto the same street to create not only a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community but also shows visibility. We have had gay bars in Plymouth for decades but they haven’t always been in the same place so having the gay village is a really good thing and a positive nod to the future of the LGBTQ+ community within Plymouth. Luke tells us that the real challenge is not that we have a safe space for the community but that every bar, club and pub in the city should be a safe space for LGBTQ+ people. It shouldn’t necessarily require a rainbow flag in the window to determine whether it is safe or not. The rainbow flag has been commercialised over recent years, however, Luke tells us that if he thinks back to when he was a teenager, afraid to come out and saw this celebration of pride with the whole of Drake’s Circus lit up with pride flags, it would have helped him to see it as a celebration rather than an attack which creates a safe space for other people to come out too.

For many people in the LGBTQ+ community, Plymouth isn’t a safe city and we need to recognise this. Not just unsafe for LGBTQ+ people but for women too as we have heard too many examples recently of women being attacked and abused on the streets for nothing more than being themselves. In celebrating how far we have come; it is important not to lull ourselves into a false sense of security because things can turn around just as fast as we have seen by Donald Trump in America. People are still being killed across the world in places like Iran and some African countries for simply being who they are. For our trans friends, we have a lot more progress to be made which can be helped by using the LGB communities’ privileges by lending their voices and supporting them. Luke Pollard encourages you to speak out about your experiences with abuse to raise awareness of the issue, not only in terms of the LGBTQ+ community but also your gender, the colour of your skin, your disability, if we can all become more confident at calling out hate comments and abuse, it will make Plymouth and the world a happier and safer place to live in. Luke has a very simple vision and it is for people to be able to be themselves and be safe. To be able to walk down the street, holding hands with the person you love, free from abuse.

This is such a simple act but requires an enormous amount of effort and action. It is something you don’t need to change the law to do, you don’t need an act of parliament or a big budget, it is something that each and every one of us can help create through our own actions and our own approaches. – Luke Pollard MP

SUMMER DAYS OUT There has been a record number of staycations booked for this summer across the UK but particularly in Devon & Cornwall. If you have missed out on your staycation or are looking for some fun day trip ideas, we have compiled the best days out in Plymouth and the surrounding area.

N

ational Trust places are in an abundance in the South West. We are certainly not short of an old house and vast landscaped gardens to explore here. You can get a National Trust Membership for the family for £78 per year for single parents and £126 per year for two adults. Under 17s qualify for free entry with this pass.

activities for the whole family to enjoy. From zip-lining and canoeing to climbing and cycling, they are never short of something exciting to do!

The pass enables you free entry into the houses and gardens, free parking and free magazines and handbooks. You don’t have to go very far to come across the first National Trust place which is Saltram. A large stately home, manicured gardens and a lovely walk around the grounds is always a lovely day out. You can even bring your bikes on the trail around the grounds.

Bellever Forest in central Dartmoor is a gorgeous location for a picnic and hike around the East River Dart. There is ample parking in the forest which looks picturesque in itself. If you take the trail up the river from the car park, you come across some old steppingstones that pass over the river as you continue the walk on the other side. You can either head uphill and walk along the top of the moorland or you can cut through on a little overgrown trail with the river on your left. You may pass a few friendly Dartmoor ponies on the way! Camping isn’t permitted here but having a little picnic is encouraged as you take in the view of the river and woodland.

Wembury Beach is another National Trust location just 15-20 minutes from Plymouth. Usually, the car park would cost you £6 for the day but National Trust Members can park for free! Wembury is a great surfing beach with coastal walks to the left and right of the car park following the famous South West Coast Path.

We are so blessed to have a stunning landscape like Dartmoor National Park on our doorstep. There are 235,700 acres of picturesque land to explore, complete with rivers, waterfalls and tors.

There are even toilet facilities in the car park too. Cann Woods offers not only a flat and accessible walk through the forest but it also is home to Devon’s longest full forest Segway experience! For just £20pp you could be gliding through the forest and breathing that fresh air whilst learning a fun new skill. There are three different Segway tours to choose from depending on your ability and how long you want to spend on the Segways. Mountain biking is one of the other popular activities to do at Cann Woods. There are four different trails to try out your abilities on with varying difficulty levels and terrain. Take a picnic with you and you could spend hours in Cann Woods! Let us not forget about Plymouth’s very own 1930’s art deco outdoor swimming pool, the Tinside Lido & Mount Wise Pools. They both officially opened on the 1st of May and hopefully, the weather in

National Trust places are great for people who are still particularly cautious when it comes to Covid-19 as you can explore a lot of what it has to offer outdoors. They are usually leisurely walks with picturesque places to stop for a picnic. A lot of the National Trust places offer fun activities for children whether that’s spotting wildlife on the walk or an adventure play park. The River Dart Country Park is only a short 30-minute drive from Plymouth. It offers 234 camping pitches, some hooked up to electric and some not. Along with the camping site, there are loads of fun

Health & Leisure June will make up for all the rain we’ve had in May so that we can finally enjoy our Lido! Have an educational experience and learn all about Plymouth’s history at The Box. Come face-to-face with a woolly mammoth and head into The Mayflower and read all about the ship that sailed from Plymouth to the New World, 400 years ago. The Box also has a swish bar and restaurant if you fancy having a bite to eat after a stroll around the museum. Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium is the largest Aquarium in the UK, home to over 4,000 marine species. The walk around the Aquarium makes you forget all your troubles as you feel like you’re scuba diving in the ocean amongst all of the beautiful sea creatures. They also offer a relaxing yoga class at the Aquarium twice a month and a dining experience next to the largest tank. Being on the south coast, it offers up a network of walking trails, in particular, the South West Coast Path. A favourite walk of mine is to get to Jenny Cliff, you can do this by driving to the car park or catching the little ferry at the Barbican to Mount Batten and then walking up the hill to Jenny Cliff. From there, keep heading up the hill and follow the path that hugs

the coast. As you walk around the wooded path, the views of the sea and Plymouth in the distance are stunning, particularly on a sunny day. If you keep walking around the headland, you will read Bovisand bay, however, that is a long hike so make sure you come prepared with food, water and sensible walking shoes. A fun day out with the kids definitely involves some fluffy animals! Pennywell Farm in Buckfastleigh is home to lots of fluffy animals such as, miniature pigs, goats, rabbits, miniature donkeys and much more! There are lots of opportunities to pet and cuddle the animals as well as bottle-feeding, collecting eggs and cheering on a miniature pig race. They also have four free farm rides to have some fun with from the Rainbow Railway to Run Rabbit Go-karts!

Please mention OM Plymouth Magazine when responding to adverts

Pennywell Farm Goats There are much more activities and day trips on our doorstep to have a wonderful summer with the family this year. With regards to the covid restrictions, by June 21st, we should have relaxed all of the measures however, this could change at any point if the cases begin to rise again, therefore, it is best to check with the event organiser or on their website before you go to make sure it’s still open.

Plymouth Market, home to all things independent, truly unique and wonderful. From fishmongers and American style diners to printer inks and wax melts, you can find everything you need and more whilst supporting your brilliant local businesses.

E

stablished as a market in 1959, the building came as a product of postwar Plymouth. The structure of the building is completely unique with a waved ceiling and no internal beams. Back then, the building was named one of the best indoor markets in the whole of Europe! Holding 156 trading spots made up of a unique mix of old favourites and new businesses to browse, Plymouth Market should always be on your shopping list! The beauty of the Market is that anyone is welcome, customer or trader. During the past few lockdowns, it has given people the time they normally wouldn’t have had to think up a new business venture. A small ‘daily stall’ in the Market will only cost you £8 a day which is perfect for business start-ups looking to try out their products and understand their target audience. If they do well in the daily stalls, they can trade for more days a week and eventually move up to a main stall. The majority of businesses in the Market are sole traders and they like to keep it this way to support independent businesses and to keep it unique. The Market is open from 8-5 pm Mon-Sat and closed on Sundays. On Wednesdays, they close at 4:30 pm to give the traders a chance to sort personal errands and appointments. As it is further downtown, in the ‘West End’, there is a large car park situated behind the market for as little as £1 per hour. In ‘non-covid’ times, they would usually take part in lots of events throughout the year but this year they have plans for just one, the Summer Carnival. The Summer Carnival is a one-day event taking place on the 28th of August where the whole of the ‘West End’ comes together to celebrate the end of summer and the bank holiday

We spoke with Marie, one of the owners of The Pilgrim Shack who told us that she used to work at Pilgrim Pasties Factory making the pasties until the company went into liquidation and she was sadly made redundant. Now current owners, Marie and fellow factory worker Lesley, decided to collaborate by creating their own shop and selling the original Pilgrim Pasties in the Market. The Pilgrim Shack want to make it clear that even though the factory is no longer here, the pasties still are! Marie told us that when they moved into the Plymouth Market, it felt like they had been there for years. ‘Everyone took us in as if we had been here forever, they were all so welcoming and friendly.’ – Marie All of their pasties are fresh from the factory each day! They offer a variety of different pasties served hot or cold for you to take away with you as well as a selection of delicious, sweet treats and

Trading their wax melts in the Market has proved really successful for owner and founder, Paris and her team, especially during the run-up to Christmas. They feel lucky to be in the Market along with other traders and especially the food stalls and restaurants. The food scene in the Market is very large which means hungry customers flock to the Market in search of some delicious food and then come across independent shops such as Elsie-Boo. They offer hand-made luxury wax melts which are vegan, made from coconut wax, biodegradable and palm oil free. They have a wide range of scents and colours on offer depending on the season, time of day or your personal choice. We spoke to Sarah who works on the stall and is Paris’ future mother-inlaw and asked her which is her favourite scent; she recommended ‘Cherry Lemonade’ and ‘Snow Fairy’. The names of the scents are all unique and fun, such as ‘9-minute holiday’ and ‘Fresh Unstoppables’. All of their wax melts are hand-made, and they also have an online shop

Health & Leisure where you can pick out your desired scent/s and have them delivered straight to your door. Along with wax melts, you can buy the wax burner from Elsie-Boo in the Market and Bath Soak Shots which are the perfect gift for any bath lover. Sarah tells us the thing she loves the most about being in Plymouth Market is the sense of community as it makes her feel a part of something special.

The Market Plaice Fishmongers

The Market Plaice Fishmongers The Market Plaice Fishmongers was founded in the Market 11 years ago by two brothers. Before they came along, the fish market looked very different with lots of individual stalls about two metres wide selling fresh-caught fish and now, The Market Plaice has expanded to take over the whole space. All of their fish is caught fresh, locally and is of the highest standard. Over 80% of their fish is caught off the shores of Plymouth which means there are no long transportation times and the fish is as fresh as it can be.

to get savoury bubble waffles in Plymouth! All of the waffles are glutenfree and there are also lots of vegan options available. Milkshakes are a popular hit with customers too with ice cream from The Yard Farm. As bubble waffles are typically Japanese cuisine, they have imported Japanese branded drinks to have with your waffle. Their best-selling waffles are Choc-a-bloc and Chilli Cheese Fiesta. We were kindly offered a Chilli Cheese Fiesta bubble waffle and we were not disappointed! Since they have been open, Sophie has been pleasantly surprised with the number of local customers coming down to the Market to shop locally and help businesses that haven’t been open during the lockdowns. Sophie tells us her favourite part about being in the Market is the social side. Even if they are just walking past, customers will often stop to say hello or have a chat for 15 minutes and you just don’t get that with a high street shop.

Fry’s Farm Shop

The two brothers love working in the Market rather than a retail setting as they love to meet new customers and be able to assist them more easily with choosing the correct fish for their meal or filleting the fish for them. The day-to-day running of the fishmongers is always the same, however, being in a bustling market means that no two days are ever the same. There are always new people to meet and lots of buzz happening around them.

Kawaffle

Sophie, owner and founder of Kawaffle has been trading in the Market for just over two years. She runs the shop by herself and absolutely loves the friendly customers and family atmosphere of the traders. Kawaffle offers sweet and savoury bubble waffles and is the only place

All of the products they sell are local brands from Devon and Cornwall which you would usually have to head outside of the city centre to find. Products such as Salcombe Gin, Cornish Pickle Co., Dartmoor Jail Ale and so much more! They also stock sliced meats, sausages, bacon, meat puddings and artisan cheeses from a selection of West Country farms. Out at the front of the shop, they have a large selection of indoor and outdoor plants, bedding plants and herbs that are all homegrown at Fry’s Nurseries. As they are new to Plymouth Market, Helen told us that they have really felt involved within the Plymouth Market community and she loves how everybody helps each other out with their own businesses.

Plymouth Inkjets

Paul from Plymouth Inkjets Plymouth Inkjets has been at the Market for 13 years, previously owned by Allister until four years ago when he took his final opportunity to serve in the Navy. Paul has since taken it on, but he keeps in contact with Allister. They specialise in ink refills and compatible ink cartridges and toners. They are unique to the high street as they offer a service that allows customers to buy their ink at a far cheaper rate than buying an original cartridge and toner.

Fry’s Farm Shop ‘Promoting local brands to local people.’ – Helen, a shop assistant at Fry’s Farm Shop. Fry’s Farm Shop is very new to the Market having opened on the 12th April. You may recognise the name as it is a sister brand to Fry’s Nurseries in Plymstock. Jamie and Jack are the founding father and son duo and own four outlets in Plymouth, all specialising in fresh, local produce. Jamie and Jack have given the shop a complete refurb from head-to-toe to transform it into a quintessential farm shop.

They can also offer basic printer repairs but due to Covid, the customer has to bring the printer into the Market as Paul can’t go into people’s homes for the safety of the staff and customers. Paul has brilliant knowledge of ink cartridges and printers so he can offer a personal and tailored service to his customers. Before we even asked Paul what he thought about working in Plymouth Market, he immediately said ‘I absolutely love working at the Market. It’s the best job I’ve ever had!’

OUR FAVOURITE

PICNIC

RECIPE IDEAS Everybody loves a good picnic on a hot summers day with a refreshing drink in hand! Well, until the wasps arrive... We have gathered the very best and simple recipes that you can easily transport to your fave picnic spot.

Grazing Platter • baked cheese, such as brie or camembert, topped with herbs and olive oil • figs, grapes, prepared pomegranates or dried fruits • thinly sliced cured meats, such as sausage or chorizo • savoury crackers, crusty bread or breadsticks • nuts and olives • dips, such as hummus, chutney or taramasalata • honey, or olive oil, for drizzling • a variety of cheeses ONE A grazing board combines the best of a cheeseboard and charcuterie platter into one indulgent selection of food. There’s no strict recipe for a grazing board – simply gather together all your favourite nibbles, and arrange on a large platter or plate to share. You could do a mixture of meats and cheese, or go entirely vegetarian or vegan. The key things to remember when creating your platter, to make it look (and taste) as impressive as possible, are: • Make sure you assemble the board just before serving so everything is fresh • Always include crackers, breadsticks or bread to use as a vessel for cheeses or dips • Use small bowls or ramekins to hold small items and dips, like olives, nuts and chutneys • Use a good variety of ingredients. For example, aim for one hard and one soft cheese, two or three different cured meats, and a few varieties of fruits and nuts • If you use larger fruits, like figs or clementines, chop and tear them into different shapes, so that the fruit is easier to pick up and looks more appealing on the platter • Swirl any dips into ramekins, and top with olive oil, seeds or chopped herbs • Bundle any cured meats into nests, or roll or fold to create a variety of textures

Mixed Tomato Puff Tart (Serves 4)

• 375g pack fresh ready-rolled puff pastry • 2 heaped tbsp fresh basil pesto • 3 vine tomatoes, sliced • 40g sun-dried tomatoes, roughly chopped • A handful baby plum tomatoes and orange cherry tomatoes, both halved • 125g mozzarella ball, torn ONE Preheat the oven to 200°C/fan180°C/gas 6. Unroll the puff pastry, trim to a 30cm x 20cm rectangle and score a 2cm border around the edge. Prick the centre of the pastry all over with a fork, place on a baking sheet and bake in the oven for 15 minutes. TWO Spread the fresh basil pesto over the centre of the pastry. Arrange the vine tomatoes, the sun-dried tomatoes, the baby plum tomatoes and orange cherry tomatoes on the pastry. THREE Scatter the mozzarella and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Return to the oven for 10 minutes. FOUR Scatter with a few fresh basil leaves and serve.

Cheese & chorizo or prosciutto skewers (Serves 6) • • • • • •

150g manchego 12 slices chorizo 6 red grapes , halved 12 mini mozzarella balls 12 small basil leaves (optional) 6 slices prosciutto , halved

ONE Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Cut the manchego into 12 cubes or oblongs. Fold a slice of chorizo around each piece of cheese and push a cocktail stick through the middle to secure it. Push half a grape on to one side, then transfer skewers to a baking tray and cook for 5 mins. Cool. THREE Wrap each mozzarella ball in basil, top with half a slice of prosciutto and push a skewer through. To serve young children, slide everything off the skewers.

Ploughman’s sandwich (Serves 2) • • • • • • • •

Easy Vanilla Cupcakes (Makes 12) • • • • • •

1 medium baguette 2 tbsp mayo 1 heaped tsp wholegrain mustard ½ small Braeburn apple 3 slices smoked ham 50g cheddar , sliced 2 tbsp pickle or chutney handful of rocket

ONE Slice the baguette in half lengthways. Mix the mayo with the mustard and cut the apple into thin slices. Spread the mayo mixture over the baguette base, then lay on the ham, cheese, apple and the pickle or chutney. Finish with the rocket and the baguette top, then cut in half.

110g butter , softened 110g golden caster sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp vanilla extract 110g self-raising flour 1-2 tbsp milk , plus a little extra for the icing

For the topping

• 125g butter , softened • 185g icing sugar • 12 strawberries ONE Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line 12 holes in a shallow muffin tin with cupcake cases (not muffin cases). Cream the butter and sugar together until the mixture is light and fluffy. Beat the eggs and vanilla in a jug, then beat into the butter mixture a little at a time. TWO Fold the flour into the mixture along with a little milk – the mixture should fall easily off a spoon. Divide the mixture between the cases, filling each one no more than half full. THREE Cook the cakes for 12-15 mins – they should be firm to the touch and slightly golden brown. Cool in the tin for 5 mins, then lift them out gently and leave to cool completely. FOUR To make the icing, beat the butter until it is very soft. Beat in the icing sugar a little at a time, then beat in a splash of the milk as you need to give you a soft icing that can be piped easily. Scrape the icing into an icing bag fitted with a star nozzle. Ice the cakes in swirls, starting in the centre and working outwards. Place a strawberry on top.

Pimm’s Slushie (Serves 4- over 18’s)

• 200ml Pimm’s • 4 large (or 8 small) strawberries , sliced • ¼ cucumber , sliced or cut into ribbons with a vegetable peeler • 500ml tub lemon sorbet • soda water , to top up • 2 mint sprigs, leaves picked • A cool bag & ice packs ONE Take four large wine glasses and pour 50ml Pimm’s into each one, then divide the strawberries and cucumber between them. Put two scoops of lemon sorbet into each glass and top up with soda water. Garnish with mint and add colourful straws.

Recipes from bbcgoodfood.com

Vegan Beetroot, hummus & crispy chickpea sub sandwich (Serves 2) • 300g pack cooked beetroot in water, drained, half sliced • 400g can chickpeas , drained • 3 tbsp vegan pesto • olive oil • splash of vinegar (white wine vinegar if you have it) • 2 large ciabatta rolls, sliced in half • 2 large handfuls mixed rocket, watercress & spinach salad ONE Blitz the whole beetroot, ¾ of the chickpeas, 2 tbsp pesto and 1 tbsp oil in a food processor with some seasoning until you have a thick, smooth hummus. Heat the ciabatta following the pack instructions. TWO Fry the remaining chickpeas in a little oil until crisp, then set aside. Toss the salad leaves with the remaining pesto and a splash of vinegar. Slice the rolls, then assemble the sandwiches with the hummus, beetroot slices, salad leaves and fried chickpeas.

BRING YOUR DOG TO WORK DAY One of the hardest parts of being a dog owner is having to say goodbye to those puppy dog eyes as you leave for work. On the 25th of June, 2021 it’s your dog’s lucky day as we celebrate Bring Your Dog to Work Day!

B

ring Your Dog to Work Day is an annual, nationwide event established in 2014 by HOWND – an ethical pet product brand. The day is all about raising money for dog welfare charities and not forgetting, bringing your dog to work with you!

At OM, we bring our dogs into the office every day! Bella and Stevie love it in the office as there is constantly someone around to give them belly rubs and play a bit of fetch! It is entirely up to your boss if they let you bring your dog to work so please ask them first! There are a few things you need to consider before bringing your dog to work with you but there are also huge health benefits if you are able to take them to work frequently.

What do you need to consider? Whilst you may know your dog is harmless, some people may feel uncomfortable around dogs or are allergic so it is important to double-check with everyone you work with before bringing them in. Having a dog in the workplace can be a very exciting prospect but if they are

Bella hard at work

causing too much of a distraction to yourself or your work colleagues you may need to think about leaving them at home more often. If your job is customer service based, you may need to make your customers aware there is a dog on your premises in case they are nervous around dogs or allergic. If your workplace is taking part in Bring Your Dog to Work Day, make sure they are aware that you are bringing your dog. If there are multiple people taking part, having some basic rules in place may make it run a bit smoother for both yourself and the dogs. Things to consider are, making sure all the dogs are likely to get along with each other, that they are all toilet trained and have up to date flea and working treatment, and are well behaved so they don’t start biting or chewing any cables or belongings.

Why you should bring your dog to work Whether it’s your own dog or a colleague’s dog, it will instantly help to relieve stress and make you happy! Watching a dog roll over at your feet waiting for some belly rubs or come charging at you with a big grin on their face is enough to make anyone’s day 10 times better. As well as your own happiness, it will make the dog happy too by being with their companion all day long. If your hours are long, your dog may suffer from separation anxiety which can turn your house into an unwanted mess when you walk through the door. By being with you the whole day, you can constantly keep an eye on them and give them all the attention they want.

Please mention OM Plymouth Magazine when responding to adverts

Having your dog with you means you will spend more time in the fresh air on your lunch break than you might be used to. Getting some fresh air can also help with productivity and clear the mind ready to get back to work.

Tips for taking your dog to work Dogs are usually allowed on all public transport but it is best to double-check before you set off to work in the morning. Some dogs begin to get stressed or anxious in busy situations and public transport may be one of these so if you can, it may be best to take your dog in the car. Otherwise, make sure they have a smooth journey. Bring something cosy for them to sleep on. If taken from home, this will act as their safe spot, especially if it is next to you and away from all the madness. Under your desk is usually a perfect spot for them to have a nap. You can never have enough treats, toys and chews to keep them busy and occupied whilst you’re hard at work. Be careful not to annoy yourself and your work colleagues with a squeaky toy though! Make sure water is always available to them and they know where to find it. Having a water bowl next to their basket under your desk may seem like a great idea until you or the dog knocks it over… Keep it in the kitchen or away from wires and electricals. Be prepared to take them outside frequently to avoid any accidents. For more information and to donate to one of the dog welfare charities head to www.bringyourdogtoworkday.co.uk

AN INTERVIEW WITH MIKE LEGASSICK Mike’s success within his career has grown from years of study and hard work but most importantly, it has stemmed from his likeability and trustworthiness that he has maintained throughout his life by business colleagues and clients that he has met along the way. The trust of a client and the ability to be liked by many people allows the relationship between Mike and the client to become strong, which is paramount when dealing with clients hard-earned life savings. What started as a job collecting monthly premiums on a rainy day in Plympton has evolved into a means of educating readers and clients on all he has learnt over his lifetime to give you a head start in controlling your money and your life.

F

inance was never something Mike was interested in. If you had asked Mike as a teenager, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ Mike would have shrugged his shoulders, and not for one second thought he’d become an Independent Financial Advisor (specialising in pensions and investments) and a Behavioural Investment Coach. He loves his job and the responsibility that comes with it. Mike never really applied himself at school and ended up with just a handful of CSE’s in his pocket and left for the world of fulltime work. He fell into the world of retail as soon as he left King’s Tamerton School at age 15. With retail, he learnt a lot about sales and talking to people but the main thing he learnt was that working in a busy retail environment on a bank holiday wasn’t for him. Snooker was and still is, a fond passion of Mike’s ever since he was 13. He played for Devon and on the Pro-am circuit and met a lot of people in the snooker fraternity that became close friends of his. One friend who worked for Pearl Assurance approached him and said ‘You’re friendly, you’ve got a good sense of humour, and you get on well with people, that’s half the battle. Why don’t you apply for a job with Pearl Assurance?’ Mike thought to himself, well it’s got to be better than retail on a bank holiday weekend, so he took the aptitude test and by the skin of his teeth, he passed it and soon after, he was hired at age 23.

regular savings plans. Sadly, this type of saving has long gone which is a shame as it engendered a savings mentality. Mike remembers his first day in Plympton well. It was raining and miserable and he didn’t really have a clue what he was doing. He should have been joined by his supervisor to show him the ropes but was instead left to his own devices. He vividly remembers thinking to himself ‘What on earth am I doing here?’ But something inside of him made him keep going, day after day until he learnt more and more about the profession he was unknowingly falling into. He then progressed to work for an insurance company and then Lloyds TSB. Mike began to see his passion growing for the finance profession and decided to take more exams and gained more qualifications to become what he is today, an independent financial advisor with over 30 years experience. He specialises in pensions and investments and is passionate about telling people the unvarnished truth about money

Meet Mike LeGassick without the useless jargon and how to invest wisely and reduce investment management costs. You could say he is the Martin Lewis of the investment world. To be an ‘independent advisor’ doesn’t mean he works on his own, far from it. Mike has a fantastic personal assistant called Sharon, and a great support team back in the office in Ivybridge. The independent part means that he has access to every single provider to ensure the best fit for the client. 8 years ago, Manning & Company, based in Ivybridge approached Mike and asked him to join them to which he told us ‘was the best move I have ever made.’ 4 years ago he became one of the directors of the company. Mikes relationship with the finance profession goes hand in hand, except for the complex jargon that tags along with it. He believes there are ways to explain complicated matters that just instantly make sense and he proves this daily with his clients and did this with myself, the Editor and Myles, the

Mike remembers his first day working for Pearl Assurance as if it were yesterday. His role at Pearl Assurance was essentially to collect premiums from his customers in Plympton and encourage them to invest in

Law & Finance for you. This is where the psychological aspects come into play. Mike will run through scenarios that help you to see things from a different perspective and in turn, reveal a more capable version of yourself and how to be successful.

Mike LeGassick’s book ‘Your Money and Your Life’ managing director at our interview with him. To be able to understand how people think and creatively phrase the question or explanation has been mastered by Mike through his 10 years studying behavioural psychology. As he felt the profession needed some simplicity, Mike decided to write his book called ‘Your Money and Your Life.’ ‘Your Money and Your Life’ is a collection of first-hand stories, examples, and simple steps to follow that have stuck by him through the years and things that he wished he had known when he was younger. The book is written on topics that have been widely discussed for hundreds of years, so it is no surprise that he can’t re-invent the wheel, however, Mike has developed a certain way in which it has been written that will make you think ‘Nobody has ever explained it to me in that way before – That makes so much sense now!’ The book is composed of two sections. The first half is largely about life lessons and it is important to note, this book is not only about money but also about life choices too. Chapters include Planning for the life you choose, the mistakes we make with our money and how to avoid them, wishes won’t bring riches, and how not to be a workplace prisoner. The second half of the book is focused on investing and your behaviour around money. There is even a section on regret. Flowing through the whole book is an underlying theme of ‘Life is not a rehearsal’ which is something Mike believes very strongly in. Mike has also designed a website to educate his clients and readers to keep them on the right track when it comes to their finances and mindset. The website, www.saverbehaviour.co.uk is comparable to an educational tool, full of bite-sized

information and easy to understand video content to educate yourself around money and investing. Amongst some fantastic tools embedded into the website is a calculator which shows historically how much you would have amassed if you began investing just £1 a day in the stock market from the day you were born. We were both shocked when we did this for ourselves. We weren’t even close to guessing how much this would have been worth today. Mike likes to carry out this exercise with his clients and they are, more often than not, shocked by the results. Therefore, his golden piece of advice to anyone is ‘Start early’ because you are unlikely to ever be able to make up for the lost time. The book and the website are not just about money, they are about changing your perspective on things. Mike has done this in a way that is thoughtprovoking, creative and motivational, highlighting all of the common financial ‘blind spots’ that we make daily without being aware of them. However, reading is one thing, but doing is quite another. If you don’t push yourself, nobody will do it

Mike says the primary objective of any investment is to maintain its purchasing power so invest with prudence in mind, not performance. Anything above this should be deemed a welcome bonus. Investing wisely for your or for your children’s future can be done safely with the help and guidance of Mike. Your retirement funds should enable you to maintain your standard of living without fear of running out of money. Most people just think, I’ll save something over the years and that should give me enough, however, most people forget about inflation which erodes the purchasing power of your money over time. The £50,000 you managed to save over the years won’t be worth £50,000 in the future. Think about it like this, if Mike said to a client, ‘I have a great investment idea for you, you put your life savings in here, and it is guaranteed to lose 2 ¼% each year.’ You just wouldn’t do it! This would be madness, but this is the effect inflation has on people who sit on cash for years in a low paying bank account. One 1st class stamp in 1991 cost 24p. Today it is 85p. As far as planning is concerned, do you know how to accurately calculate how much money you are going to need for the rest of your life so you can live an independent and dignified retirement? In other words, do you know what your number is? Mike teaches you how and explains this in detail in his book. Another well-worded scenario Mike likes to ask his clients is ‘Do you believe you

Law & Finance could save 20% of your income each month?’ Most people say no, however, later, he asks another question, ‘Do you think you could live fairly comfortably on 80% of your monthly income?’ Most people think they could. To be able to live on 80% of your income is effectively to be able to save 20% of it. It was just phrased differently. Mike tells us that a lot of the work he does with his clients is psychological and once you overcome that hurdle, you have passed the most difficult part. Unfortunately, emotions generally trump logic, and this is where Mike can help. Trusting the stock market with your money is something humans are not well-equipped to do. It can be daunting. Mike tells us ‘One of the biggest mistakes investors make is that they confuse volatility with permanent loss.’ He then began to explain that the process of investing money into the stock market is comparable to a rollercoaster. As you strap yourself in, your mind is full of different emotions from fear to excitement and adrenalin and you experience the steep climbs and sharp drops and bends and loop the loops. This is volatility. Midway through a loop the loop and people are screaming ‘get me out of here!’, get me off this ride! – If you had managed to get out of your seat while upside down, that would be permanent loss. Yet you keep going until the ride reaches the end and you come out of it unscathed. Markets go up and down all the time, but long-term history has proven they go up much more than down over time. Explaining concepts like these to clients is key to managing their expectations. Mike has only ever invested his clients’ money in things that have always worked. i.e., investing their money in a huge collection of the greatest business in the world. He will never invest their money in fads, flavours of the month, or things that just happen to be working now. This is not investing. This is speculating. Mike prides himself on managing client expectations and being brutally honest with them. He makes it clear to his clients that their investments categorically will fall in value from time to time. Not might or could, they will. The important thing is to stick to the plan and to never be tempted to get off that ‘rollercoaster’ halfway through.

He recommends that clients take a ‘slothlike approach’, to investing. Looking at the value every day will not help you in any way, just let time do its thing. This way you won’t be panicking about any temporary drops in the market and therefore won’t be tempted to withdraw it at the wrong time. Imagine if house prices were reported every day on the news. Thankfully, they aren’t so people don’t care to look. Warren Buffett is regarded as the greatest investor that has ever lived and is a great example of someone who has great patience when investing. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos approached Warren Buffett and asked, ‘Your process is so simple and proven to work, why doesn’t everyone do what you do?’ Warren replied, ‘Because no one wants to get rich slowly Jeff.’ Mike has phrased his questions so well over the years that he can determine whether a client understands investing or not in no time at all. He asks his clients, ‘Do you know what Black Monday was in 1987?’ This was the single biggest stock market crash in UK history. And then he asks them, ‘Do you know what the FTSE 100 is?’ It is the 100 biggest companies in the UK. ‘Imagine you had £100,000 invested in the FTSE 100 and the news came on reporting the biggest stock market crash in UK history. ‘What do you think your £100,000 is worth right at that moment?’ Most people say ‘zero’. In fact, the stock market fell by 22% in 48 hours, but you haven’t lost any money because you haven’t cashed it in – remember the rollercoaster, don’t get out when you’re upside-down. If you thought you would have lost all your money, that would have meant that the 100 largest companies in the UK went bust overnight. And for that to happen, it would be Armageddon territory and your money would be meaningless anyway. Lack of understanding of the stock market means you could potentially make some bad decisions.

And where does Mike see himself 5 years from now? ‘I love what I do, and I will continue to ensure my clients remain on the right track.’ He may reduce his hours and pass on clients to younger members of the team but ultimately, he doesn’t want to stop. Another book may make an appearance in the future focusing solely on how to be a better investor. Director at Manning & Company, Behavioural Investment Coach, member of the Parliamentary Financial Review Team and the UK Leaders Council, 2nd in the South West for Top-Rated Advisor by client reviews on ‘VouchedFor’ and not forgetting, great friend to his clients, Mike has gained a lot of knowledge, understanding, and trust throughout his career that he would now like to share with you, the reader.

The stock market is now way higher than back in 1987. Stock markets will suffer big temporary dips occasionally, but they have always come back stronger to reach new highs.

To buy his book, head to www.lulu. com or Amazon and other online book retailers. It comes in hardback, paperback, and Kindle versions with varying prices from £2.99-£29.95. He is also releasing an audiobook version very soon!

Mike always works on a ‘no surprises’ policy by explaining everything important,

very clearly so that the phone never rings with the dreaded, ‘You never said this could happen.’ This was the main reason why he wrote the book in the way it has been written to ensure everybody can understand it. The book is for everybody, whether you have just finished your education, halfway through your life or just about to retire. He is certain that everybody will learn something from it and if the reader follows it through with actions, then they will save tens or even hundreds of thousands through their lifetime.

S

21ST JUNE Covid Restrictions

o far, the Roadmap for the easing of restrictions has gone to plan. The vaccine roll-out has been very successful and on target and the UK cases are declining. This means that if everything still goes in the right direction, then the 21st of June will be when all rules are relaxed.

Stage 4

No earlier than 21st June

All social contact regulations will be removed.

No legal limits on weddings, funerals or other life events.

Nightclubs will be allowed to reopen.

As you may have seen on the news, the Indian variant is spreading faster and is more aggressive in its symptoms. This is a worry for us as it may disrupt our 21st June plans and cause the cases to rise significantly, creating a third wave of infection. This is something the government are watching closely, and it may affect whether we relax all restrictions come 21st of June or not. As it stands, the vaccines have been proven to help fight the Indian variant however, it has seen better effects when given the second dose of the vaccine. Now that well over half of the UK adults have had their first dose, the focus draws towards giving the elderly and vulnerable their second dosage. With all this being said, the rate of infection in the UK has dramatically reduced which means there is hope to see the 21st of June going to plan. This day will mark a significant day in history where all restrictions have been lifted and life will feel slightly back to normal. There is every chance this may change but for the minute we shall keep positive and hope for the best outcome!
