When the determination to save his families cleaning service company in 2007 became a success, Andi embarked on the lifechanging decision to re-name his parent’s company to ‘Captain Rug Wash’, lean on the ever-growing world of social media in order to grow his company to what it is today. Andi’s success within the industry has stemmed from not only his 20 years of experience but also from the many certificates that he has earned from studying various courses and passing exams. Andi was the first person in the UK to earn the Master Rug Cleaner certificate and currently joins 5 others in the country who now hold both Master Rug Cleaner and Textile Pro badges.
C
aptain Rug Wash was originally founded by Andi’s father, Phil in 1988 who named it ECS (Executive Cleaning Services SW Ltd). Andi’s mum, Sandra joined the team in 1995 where she carried the office side of the business. At the time, they specialised in carpet and upholstery cleaning and fire and flood restoration. They worked alongside insurance companies in the late ’90s who helped the company to grow their fire and flood restoration section of the company. They managed to expand their business and had 4 part-time firemen join the team who were originally close friends with Phil. After Andi finished school, he began working with his parents at ECS in 2000 when the company were primarily working with fire and flood restoration. Things took a turn for the worse for the family in 200 when Phil developed cancer and had to take time off work to fight the illness. Balancing the heavier workload and coming to terms with his father’s illness made things all the more challenging for Andi and his mother, Sandra. And then the recession hit in 2007 which forced the insurance company they worked closely with to shut down meaning they had just lost 80% of their business overnight. The team quickly shrank to the three of them again and life became very difficult for the family.
08 July 2021
A year later, things began to turn around for the family as Phil recovered from cancer. Phil wanted to take life at a slightly slower pace so he came back to help with the quoting in 2012 when he felt ready. With this relief, Andi devoted himself to saving the family business by doing everything he could. In 2009, Andi won a machine that essentially beats rugs 10 x faster than a manual wooden beater and soon after, he realised how lucky he was to have this machine as people were offering him thousands of pounds for it. This machine then kickstarted his ambition to take courses and to gain more skills. Once he felt confident that he knew as much as he could about the processes, he realised he wanted to make this business his own which started with a change of name. Andi and his family were brainstorming ideas until Phil joked about ‘Captain Pug Wash’, they all laughed and then looked at each other and paused, ‘Captain Rug Wash!’ To their amazement, Captain Rug Wash had never been used before so they soon had it copyrighted and began to design the branding. Andi had a friend in Manchester who told him to post on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook every day and sure enough, it
Call OM Plymouth Magazine 01752 691007
grew. He attended classes with YouTube Gurus and experts and picked up a few tips and tricks that are still ever-present on his social media today. At this point, Captain Rug Wash was the only carpet cleaner in the South West on social media. The videos he posts are still to this day, very popular and loved by thousands across the world. His content consists of satisfying videos of Andi cleaning rugs using various different machines and tools. After the re-brand and the surge of followers on his social media channels, he went from cleaning 1-2 rugs a year with ECS to cleaning 200+ rugs a year as Captain Rug Wash today. Phil retired from the company in 2019 and it is now run solely by Andi and Sandra. Andi does all the cleaning and Sandra works in the office. He began working in his parents’ garage from 2010-2014 which wasn’t ideal as every time he needed to clean a rug, he’d have to take everything out of the garage and put it all back after it had been cleaned. In 2014, he built a double garage onto the side of his parent’s house which offered him more space

Home cleaner from Ipswich who has since become Andi’s girlfriend. They were both worried that their companies would have to make the permanent move to become infection control cleaners which were something neither of them wanted to do.
Waste water after cleaning the rug accelerate the drying process and to stop shrinkage and colours from bleeding. All of the rugs are cleaned in the unit due to the amount of water he uses to thoroughly clean them. Some rugs that are machine-made with backing can be cleaned at home however, to get the best outcome, it is always best to take it to Andi and have him clean it at the unit. and a more permanent base, until 3 months ago when he moved into the unit he’s in today! Andi has never considered himself to be a businessman, he likes to never take himself too seriously and he even dresses up as Captain Rug Wash from time to time! Captain Rug Wash now specialise in carpet, upholstery, rugs and hard floor cleaning such as stone, wood and vinyl and they offer a premium service to give credit to Andi and the experience and knowledge that has come from the certificates he has rightfully earned over the years. Andi has cleaned rugs that are £20,000-£40,000 in value so it requires a great amount of care, knowledge and attention to detail. He has been trained properly and knows the chemistry, fibres and mix of chemicals in order to create the right outcome for each individual rug. In Andi’s new unit, they have a space to clean the rugs which is watertight so that the rugs can be completely submerged in water. They also have a section to beat the rugs using the machine Andi won in 2009 as well as having a dedicated rug drying room where rugs are hung up using dehumidifiers and air movers to
Persian rugs require additional attention as the colours will always bleed but it’s about knowing the specific chemicals that will stop the deeper colours from running off into the lighter shades. Persian rugs take a lot of time to make by hand and they involve a lot of skill therefore Andi treats the rugs with the respect they deserve and feels privileged to clean them. To Andi, these expensive rugs resemble art as opposed to the less expensive rugs that act as décor and match the curtains and furnishings. A friend of Andi’s in the rug cleaning industry offered Andi the opportunity to help clean one of Saltram Houses’ massive rugs as part of the National trust. The work was especially difficult as he had to clean the rug in the house which meant he had to measure the air humidity and temperature every 20 minutes so that the paintings and wood furnishings didn’t become damaged. The pandemic was a bit of a scary time for Captain Rug Wash as their industry aligned themselves with the infection control due to their chemicals being medical grade. During an infection control course, Andi met a fellow rug

Fortunately, they received furlough pay and managed to stay afloat for three months without any work. During this time they updated their cost sheets, procedures and had time to service the machines before starting up again. They have only just caught up with the backlog from the last year and now they have taken bookings until the third week of August (from the date of interview 11/06/2021. Every rug is priced on a square foot, with a price range of £2.50 - £7.00 depending on the type of material the rug is constructed from. Either being machine made right through to silk, also whether rugs are stained or have had animal accidents on them. You can apply for a free consultation on their website (details listed below) or phone the office to discuss your rug with Sandra. Captain Rug Wash covers the whole of the South West however, Andi will travel as far as Bristol, Milton Keynes and London if the job is worth travelling for. Andi has a network of rug cleaners across the UK who pass work on to others closer to their area. In 5 years, Andi would like to have two more people on his team to work primarily out in the van, cleaning carpets and upholstery whilst Andi spends more time doing what he loves, cleaning the rugs. Moving into a bigger unit is also something Andi would love to do in the future so that he can have an office onsite. Andi’s reputation, skill and determination to keep his family business going, even at the most challenging time of his life, is how he has gained so many loyal customers and why Captain Rug Wash is able to grow day by day.

KEEPING DOGS COOL THIS SUMMER It’s almost mid-summer which means hot weather and hot dogs. We have gathered together the best tips to keep your dog cool this summer along with what to do if you find a dog in a hot car.
D
ogs, like most pets, are unable to sweat which makes them feel a lot hotter than humans as they don’t have a supportive Thermoregulation system to cool them down. An average body temperature of a human is 37 degrees Celsius, however, the average body temperature of a dog is two degrees hotter. We all feel the difference between a hot sunny day at 20 degrees Celsius and 22 degrees Celsius which means every degree we feel is felt two degrees hotter by a dog.
To keep themselves cool, dogs pant, this enables them to breathe out the hot air from their lungs and exchange it with cooler external air. They also seek a cool surface to lie down on as opposed to carpet. Their bodies are able to transfer some of their internal heat to surfaces that are cooler than themselves.
Dogs in hot cars
or giving them to a family member to look after whilst you run some errands. If you have a passenger in the car, ask for them to stay in the car with the dog so you can either keep the boot open or keep the air con on. Make sure you always put the window down slightly for your dog, even if you are popping out for 2 minutes and try to park in a shady spot. If you see a dog in a hot car that you think is in distress, you should dial 999. However, they may not be able to reach the dog in time as it can take minutes for it to turn fatal. If the situation becomes urgent and you can tell they are showing major signs of heatstroke, many people will resort to breaking into the car. This is completely your decision as it could be classed as criminal damage and you could be taken to court. Before smashing the car window, take a short video and photos to prove the dog was in distress to aid yourself in court. You should also notify the police of what you’re about to do and why.
‘The law states that you have a lawful excuse to commit damage if you believe that the owner of the property that you damage would consent to the damage if they knew the circumstances (section 5(2)(a) Criminal Damage Act 1971).’
Symptoms of Heatstroke • Heavy panting • A rapid pulse • Excessive salivation • Glazed eyes • Lack of coordination • Vomiting or diarrhoea • Loss of consciousness
Keeping a dog in a car in the hot weather means that there is no external cooler air for the dog to breathe in when panting so the dog’s breath soon acts as a radiator, heating up the car faster. The surfaces of a car are always soft and absorb heat fast which results in no cool surface for the dog to transfer its body heat to. This is why leaving your dog in a hot car for over 5 minutes can be potentially fatal. The general rule is that it is safe to leave your dog in a car for no longer than 5 minutes and only when the outside temperature doesn’t exceed 21 degrees Celsius. Any hotter than that and you will need to think about adapting your plans to suit your dog. Whether that’s dropping the dog off at home before you do a food shop

Plenty of water If you’re going out for the day with your dog, take a re-usable dog water bowl and water bottle and frequently offer it to your dog, especially when they are panting. You can buy special dog water bottles from most pet shops which are designed to allow you to pour the water from the bottle into an attached water bowl for portable use. Make sure you keep an eye on your dog’s water bowl at home as they tend to drink a lot more when they are warm just like humans and you may not notice they are out of water. If you are walking your dog at midday when it’s hottest, then try to plan a walk with plenty of shade, for example, woodland, or natural water spots like rivers, lakes and the sea. If they are not water-lovers, entice them into the water with a game of fetch or go into the water with them if you fancy a dip! Paddling pools are not only great fun for kids but dogs love them too! Make sure you keep it in the shade to keep the water cold and they will love cooling themselves down with a little splash about.
If you don’t have a paddling pool or a sprinkler available, try pouring some tepid or cool water over your dog. It is advised not to pour ice-cold water over your dog or completely submerge your dog in water due to the sudden difference in temperatures. If you do pour some tepid or cool water over your dog, wipe away the excess water with your hand as longhaired dogs may become waterlogged making the fur hold in the heat.
Pampered pooch If your dog is long-haired, make sure you are regularly brushing them to get rid of loose hairs and knots that trap in the heat. Keep their coat clipped to a shorter length than they would have in winter and make
sure the hair is out of their eyes and mouth. In the hot weather, dogs with light coloured or thinly coated fur can also get sunburnt. If they are at risk of getting sunburnt, you can now buy special dog sun cream available at pet shops. Dogs paw pads may look pretty tough but on hot surfaces such as sand and tarmac, it can really hurt your dogs’ paws. Stick to grass and muddy terrain when walking your dog and make sure there is a cold surface available to your dog if you are in your garden. Keep your dogs safe this summer by keeping them cool.

OUR FAVOURITE FOODS OF THE WORLD RECIPE IDEAS Since going abroad has become a little difficult this past year, we thought we’d bring all the flavours and colours into the comfort of your own kitchen. From Spain to India, get your holiday fix with these recipes.
Chicken tacos with green pepper salsa (Serves 2) • 2 chicken breasts, cut into thin strips 1 can of drained and washed cannellini beans 1 red onion, thinly sliced 1 red chilli, chopped 1 clove garlic, crushed small bunch of coriander, chopped ½ lemon, juice only salt and freshly ground black pepper 100ml/3½fl oz sour cream 4 taco shells
For the salsa
3 plum tomatoes, de-seeded and chopped 1 red chilli, chopped 1 green pepper, finely chopped ½ red onion ½ lemon, juice only 1 tbsp olive oil
To garnish
50g/2oz cucumber, finely sliced 50g/2oz cheddar, grated ½ red onion, diced ONE In a deep pan, sauté the chicken in a little oil until just cooked. Add the beans and onion, chilli and garlic and some chopped coriander. TWO Add the lemon juice and season, and then mix in a little sour cream. THREE In another bowl, mix the salsa ingredients together. FOUR To serve, spoon the chicken mix into the taco shells and add some salsa. Dollop a little more sour cream inside, garnish with the cucumber, grated cheddar and red onion.
Chicken & chorizo paella (Serves 6-8)
• 1–2 tbsp oil • 12 whole chicken pieces (legs or thighs), on the bone • 1 chorizo sausage, sliced into 3mm/1/8in thick slices • 1 large onion, finely chopped • 3 garlic cloves, crushedtomatoes, both halved • 2 red peppers, seeds removed, sliced • 2–3 red chillies, seeds removed, chopped • 2 tsp smoked paprika • 1.5 litres/2½ pints chicken stock • 400g/14oz paella rice • 12 mussels or clams, (optional) cleaned, open and damaged shells discarded • handful parsley, roughly chopped ONE Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4. TWO Heat the oil in a large, lidded, heatproof pan or paella pan. Fry the chicken until the pieces are evenly browned, turning them regularly as they cook. You may need to do this in two batches, depending on the size of your pan. Remove the chicken from the pan and set aside. THREE Fry the slices of chorizo in the pan until crisp. They will release their juices into the pan, which adds a lot of flavour to the dish. Add the onion to the pan, and cook gently until soft, then add the garlic and fry for a further 2–3 minutes. Add the red peppers, chillies and smoked paprika, cook for another 2–3 minutes. Return the chicken pieces to the pan and pour in the stock. Simmer gently for 20–25 minutes until the chicken is tender. FOUR Add the rice to the pan, cover with the lid and put into the preheated oven. Cook for 30 minutes, or until all the liquid has been absorbed and the rice is cooked. Alternatively, if using a paella pan which won’t fit in the oven, cover tightly with foil and continue cooking on the stove over a low heat for the same cooking time. If using mussels or clams, add them to the pan for the final 20 minutes cooking time. Discard any shells that remain closed after cooking. Check the chicken is cooked by piercing the thickest part of a piece with a skewer – if the juices run clear the chicken is cooked. FIVE Sprinkle with parsley before bringing the pan to the table. Let your guests help themselves.

Bombay Potatoes (Serves 4) • • • • • •
4 tbsp oil ¼ tsp mustard seeds (brown or yellow) 2 pinches of chilli powder ¼ tsp turmeric powder 350g/12oz potatoes, boiled and quartered salt to taste
ONE Heat the oil in a pan on a medium heat setting. TWO To check that the oil is hot enough, sprinkle in a few mustard seeds, if they pop the oil is ready. Then add the remainder of the mustard seeds.
Portuguese Custard Tarts (Makes 10) • • • •
300g/10½oz ready-made all-butter puff pastry 250g/9oz caster sugar 1 cinnamon stick ½ lemon, whole peeled rind only
For the custard filling • • • •
25g/1oz plain flour, plus extra for dusting 12g cornflour 4 free-range egg yolks, plus 1 whole free-range egg vanilla seeds from one vanilla pod
ONE Preheat the oven to its highest setting, or at least 230C/210C Fan/Gas 8. To make the sugar syrup, bring the sugar, cinnamon and lemon rind to the boil in a saucepan with 250ml/9fl oz water. Reduce the heat until the mixture is simmering, then simmer for 3 minutes. Set the syrup aside until completely cool. Once cool, discard the cinnamon stick and lemon rind. TWO To make the custard, mix the flours together in a bowl. Pour in a splash of milk and stir with your finger until combined. THREE Bring the remaining milk to the boil in a saucepan over low heat, stirring regularly. Gradually add the boiled milk to the flour and whisk for 1 minute, or until smooth and well combined. Slowly whisk in the sugar syrup. Whisk in the egg yolks, whole egg and vanilla seeds until smooth. Set aside.
THREE Add the chilli and turmeric powders to the sizzling seeds, and salt to taste. FOUR Fry this pungent mixture of oil and spices for 1 minute then add the potatoes. Fry for about 4 minutes until the potatoes are smothered in seeds and appear to have crispy edges. They will look quite yellow in colour. Cover the pan and on a low heat, cook the potatoes for a further 5 minutes. Serve immediately.
Greek Salad (Serves 2) • ½ small red onion, thinly sliced • 2 large ripe tomatoes, roughly chopped • ½ cucumber, deseeded and roughly chopped • 100g/3½oz reduced fat feta cheese, drained and cut into cubes • 50g/1¾oz black olives, pitted and drained (in brine not oil and preferably Kalamata olives) • small handful fresh mint leaves • ½ tsp dried oregano • 2 tsp extra virgin olive oil • 2 tsp fresh lemon juice • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • 2 wholemeal pitta breads, warmed ONE Put the onion, tomatoes and cucumber in a bowl and season to taste. TWO Scatter the feta, olives and mint leaves on top. Sprinkle over the oregano and toss lightly. Drizzle over the oil and lemon juice and serve with warmed pitta bread.
FOUR Roll out the pastry onto a lightly floured work surface to a rectangle measuring approximately 50x30/20x12in, but more importantly to a thickness of 1mm. With the longest edge of the pastry rectangle facing you, roll the pastry as tightly as possible, brushing it from right to left with water as you go. Cut the pastry roll into 2cm/¾in-thick discs. FIVE Place the discs in the holes of a muffin tin and massage them with a circular motion using a wet thumb, until the pastry rises up the sides of the holes in the tray. Make sure you don’t make any holes in the pastry. SIX Fill the pastry cases with the custard until they are almost, but not quite, full. SEVEN Bake for 20 minutes, or until the pastry has risen and the surface of the custard is scorched. Set aside to cool for at least 10 minutes before serving to allow the custard to set slightly.

PLASTIC FREE JULY Become a part of the solution by refusing single-use plastics this July (and beyond!) Plastic Free July is a worldwide movement to encourage people to make the swaps from single-use plastic to reusable so we can have cleaner oceans, streets and a healthier planet.
T
he challenge is simple and available to everyone. All you need to do to be a part of the change is refuse single-use plastics and opt for sustainable alternatives. Once you apply to take part, Plastic Free July will offer ideas and resources to guide you in your challenge to better the planet.
that cannot be recycled, you can begin to see how much plastic can build up over just one year.
The Plastic Free movement has currently inspired approximately 326 million within 177 countries!
A lot of the plastic we throw away ends up in our oceans in a few different forms. Fishing materials are the biggest polluter of our oceans which was a topic widely talked about on the Netflix documentary ‘Seaspiracy’. Well worth the watch! The rest is made up of our personal plastic waste that we can all help to reduce. Not all plastics are visible, a lot of the ocean is made up of microplastics that are consumed by fish which are then consumed by us. It is very easy to think, ‘If it doesn’t affect me then I don’t need to worry about it.’ However, if you are a consumer of fish, you are digesting plastic yourself. Microplastics are usually a product of washing clothes in a washing machine. There are alternatives you can use to help stop microplastics from entering the ocean which I will also discuss.
The best part of this challenge is that by making these small changes every day for one month, they are more likely to become life-long habits. Supermarkets are designed for your convenience and plastic happens to be one of the most convenient materials in the world. Plastic packaging is durable, long-lasting, cheap to produce, helps protect and preserve foods and is fairly light in weight which means transportation is faster. Although plastic has many positives that enrich our lives, our planet is suffering because of it. Durable and long-lasting means we will never see it decompose within our lifetime. If we are all using plastic
In fact, in the UK alone, we collectively throw away 295 billion pieces of plastic every year and the majority of it is single-use meaning it cannot get recycled.
How to live plastic-free Reusable water bottles and coffee cups are becoming increasingly more popular and easier to find. Cafes and coffee shops all offer their own reusable alternatives that you can purchase instore instead of disposable paper cups. A lot of people mistake the paper cup for paper or cardboard however, disposable paper cups are lined with plastic to stop the drink from leaking. Try to resist the urge and wait until you can sit down at a café and order a drink in a durable mug or glass. If you think you may be tempted by a coffee in the day, pop your re-usable coffee cup in your bag just in case you might want to use it later on in the day. Chilly’s bottles are not only beautifully designed with loads of different patterns and colours to choose from but they also keep your drinks cold for 24 hours and hot for 12 hours! I have personally tested this out and left the bottle in a hot car all day and the water was just as cold as when it entered the bottle hours before. In the UK, we are fortunate to have safe drinking water, straight from the tap. Many countries aren’t blessed with this privilege that we often take for granted. Bottled water Always bring reusable bags. You never know when you might need a shopping bag if you’re out and about so it’s always best to keep one in your bag at all times. Shopping bags don’t have to take up much room in your bag or pocket. You can purchase collapsible shopping bags that compress into their own sack and can be the size of a small wallet or tennis ball. Very useful for popping out to grab a few things.

Eating & Drinking Being able to live plastic-free comes from being prepared. This is a good life lesson to learn because in day-to-day life when you are prepared, you are less likely to be late and make silly mistakes. Being prepared within the plastic-free world means making your lunch the night before or waking up early to make them in the morning. Put the contents of your packed lunch into a re-usable container then you won’t need to pop out for lunch and feel tempted by the convenient plastic packaging. If you have made something that needs to be wrapped up, avoid cling-film and opt for a sustainable alternative such as beeswax wraps. Being prepared also comes down to your food shops and knowing what meals you want to have during the week. Make sure you check the use-by dates and cook the foods which have the earliest use-by dates first. Becoming plastic-free means you may have to shop around instead of grabbing everything in one supermarket.
Refil shops are your new supermarkets Refill shops are brilliant for getting your dried foods such as; pasta, lentils, nuts, rice, grains, dried fruit, flour etc. Simply bring your re-usable containers and jars with you and weigh the produce as you go! In a lot of refill shops, they will often sell ecofriendly alternatives such as recycled or bamboo toilet rolls, soap and shampoo bars, metal straws, wooden dish scrubs and much more.
Frozen goods are a tricky one to avoid plasticfree packaging. I have noticed Endsleigh Garden Centre offer a packaging-free frozen section where you can bring in your own reusable containers and fill them up with frozen goods. The items are priced on the weight of the food, not including your container. Grocers and farmers markets are a great way to purchase delicious fresh local produce without any plastic involved. Most markets don’t even put the stickers on the fruit and veg! Berries and small loose fruit and veg are often packaged in plastic containers which can be brought back to the vendor to be reused. This cannot be done in supermarkets. Fruit and veg boxes delivered directly to your door are usually plastic-free. Check with the supplier first, it should advertise that they are plastic-free on their website or social media however if you are unsure, you can always enquire. Fruit and veg boxes are a great way to explore new in-season produce which encourages you to experiment with your cooking and expand your healthy diet.
FruutBox FruutBox offers a great selection of quality fruit and vegetables without any single-use plastic packaging, delivered straight to your door in a box. Choose from their set boxes or build your own perfect FruutBox. If you absolutely love these boxes, you can subscribe to their simple subscription service and save 5% on all products and set your deliveries to weekly or fortnightly and let FruutBox take care of the rest. Based in Newquay, they currently deliver to the following postcodes: PL1-14 & PL22-35, TR1-16 & TR27. Grab your box today!

Eating & Drinking If you find yourself in the fruit and veg aisle in a supermarket, try to source loose produce and don’t be tempted by the plastic produce bags. As long as you wash your loose items before consuming them, what’s the worst that will happen! Milk bottles are always coated in plastic, even the cardboard containers have plastic inside however, returnable glass milk bottles are coming back in fashion! You can order your returnable milk bottles from Milk & More, Jar Plymouth, Veg Box Fresh and many more. Processed bread is always packaged in plastic however if you go over to the bakery section, you can reduce the plastic and buy fresh bread in paper bags or no bags at all. This bread tends to be nicer anyway but it will go off quickly so make sure you only grab what you need. Most clothes, but particularly those with synthetic fibres release microplastics into the ocean when cleaned in a washing machine or dried in a tumble dryer. Some ways to reduce this are; buying fewer clothes or buying materials that don’t shed as many microfibres, hang your clothes out to dry, or you can purchase products that
are designed to collect the microplastics in the washing machine for example ‘Hairy Ballz’! You may notice your food bills increasing slightly over the month however, the re-usable swaps that you make will help to reduce the costs over time. Local produce tends to be a bit more expensive compared to supermarkets however, you will know exactly where it has come from, how it was produced, what’s gone into it and how far it has travelled to get to your plate. These are all huge benefits to your health as well as the planet and the local economy.
“
“Think about it. Why would you make something that you’re going to use for a few minutes out of a material that’s basically going to last forever, and you’re just going to throw it away. What’s up with that?” - Jeb Berrier, Bag It movie

AN INTERVIEW WITH MIKE LEGASSICK Mike’s success within his career has grown from years of study and hard work but most importantly, it has stemmed from his likeability and trustworthiness that he has maintained throughout his life by business colleagues and clients that he has met along the way. The trust of a client and the ability to be liked by many people allows the relationship between Mike and the client to become strong, which is paramount when dealing with clients hard-earned life savings. What started as a job collecting monthly premiums on a rainy day in Plympton has evolved into a means of educating readers and clients on all he has learnt over his lifetime to give you a head start in controlling your money and your life.
F
inance was never something Mike was interested in. If you had asked Mike as a teenager, ‘What do you want to be when you grow up?’ Mike would have shrugged his shoulders, and not for one second thought he’d become an Independent Financial Advisor (specialising in pensions and investments) and a Behavioural Investment Coach. He loves his job and the responsibility that comes with it. Mike never really applied himself at school and ended up with just a handful of CSE’s in his pocket and left for the world of fulltime work. He fell into the world of retail as soon as he left King’s Tamerton School at age 15. With retail, he learnt a lot about sales and talking to people but the main thing he learnt was that working in a busy retail environment on a bank holiday wasn’t for him. Snooker was and still is, a fond passion of Mike’s ever since he was 13. He played for Devon and on the Pro-am circuit and met a lot of people in the snooker fraternity that became close friends of his. One friend who worked for Pearl Assurance approached him and said ‘You’re friendly, you’ve got a good sense of humour, and you get on well with people, that’s half the battle. Why don’t you apply for a job with Pearl Assurance?’ Mike thought to himself, well it’s got to be better than retail on a bank holiday weekend, so he took the aptitude test and by the skin of his teeth, he passed it and soon after, he was hired at age 23. Mike remembers his first day working for Pearl Assurance as if it were yesterday. His role at Pearl Assurance was essentially to collect premiums from his customers in

Plympton and encourage them to invest in regular savings plans. Sadly, this type of saving has long gone which is a shame as it engendered a savings mentality. Mike remembers his first day in Plympton well. It was raining and miserable and he didn’t really have a clue what he was doing. He should have been joined by his supervisor to show him the ropes but was instead left to his own devices. He vividly remembers thinking to himself ‘What on earth am I doing here?’ But something inside of him made him keep going, day after day until he learnt more and more about the profession he was unknowingly falling into. He then progressed to work for an insurance company and then Lloyds TSB. Mike began to see his passion growing for the finance profession and decided to take more exams and gained more qualifications to become what he is today, an independent financial advisor
Meet Mike LeGassick with over 30 years experience. He specialises in pensions and investments and is passionate about telling people the unvarnished truth about money without the useless jargon and how to invest wisely and reduce investment management costs. You could say he is the Martin Lewis of the investment world. To be an ‘independent advisor’ doesn’t mean he works on his own, far from it. Mike has a fantastic personal assistant called Sharon, and a great support team back in the office in Ivybridge. The independent part means that he has access to every single provider to ensure the best fit for the client. 8 years ago, Manning & Company, based in Ivybridge approached Mike and asked him to join them to which he told us ‘was the best move I have

Law & Finance likes to carry out this exercise with his clients and they are, more often than not, shocked by the results. Therefore, his golden piece of advice to anyone is ‘Start early’ because you are unlikely to ever be able to make up for the lost time.
Mike LeGassick’s website ‘Saver Behaviour’ ever made.’ 4 years ago he became one of the directors of the company. Mikes relationship with the finance profession goes hand in hand, except for the complex jargon that tags along with it. He believes there are ways to explain complicated matters that just instantly make sense and he proves this daily with his clients and did this with myself, the Editor and Myles, the managing director at our interview with him. To be able to understand how people think and creatively phrase the question or explanation has been mastered by Mike through his 10 years studying behavioural psychology. As he felt the profession needed some simplicity, Mike decided to write his book called ‘Your Money and Your Life.’ ‘Your Money and Your Life’ is a collection of first-hand stories, examples, and simple steps to follow that have stuck by him through the years and things that he wished he had known when he was younger. The book is written on topics that have been widely discussed for hundreds of years, so it is no surprise that he can’t re-invent the wheel, however, Mike has developed a certain way in which it has been written that will make you think ‘Nobody has ever explained it to me in that way before – That makes so much sense now!’
The book is composed of two sections. The first half is largely about life lessons and it is important to note, this book is not only about money but also about life choices too. Chapters include Planning for the life you choose, the mistakes we make with our money and how to avoid them, wishes won’t bring riches, and how not to be a workplace prisoner. The second half of the book is focused on investing and your behaviour around money. There is even a section on regret. Flowing through the whole book is an underlying theme of ‘Life is not a rehearsal’ which is something Mike believes very strongly in. Mike has also designed a website to educate his clients and readers to keep them on the right track when it comes to their finances and mindset. The website, www.saverbehaviour.co.uk is comparable to an educational tool, full of bite-sized information and easy to understand video content to educate yourself around money and investing. Amongst some fantastic tools embedded into the website is a calculator which shows historically how much you would have amassed if you began investing just £1 a day in the stock market from the day you were born. We were both shocked when we did this for ourselves. We weren’t even close to guessing how much this would have been worth today. Mike
The book and the website are not just about money, they are about changing your perspective on things. Mike has done this in a way that is thoughtprovoking, creative and motivational, highlighting all of the common financial ‘blind spots’ that we make daily without being aware of them. However, reading is one thing, but doing is quite another. If you don’t push yourself, nobody will do it for you. This is where the psychological aspects come into play. Mike will run through scenarios that help you to see things from a different perspective and in turn, reveal a more capable version of yourself and how to be successful. Mike says the primary objective of any investment is to maintain its purchasing power so invest with prudence in mind, not performance. Anything above this should be deemed a welcome bonus. Investing wisely for your or for your children’s future can be done safely with the help and guidance of Mike. Your retirement funds should enable you to maintain your standard of living without fear of running out of money. Most people just think, I’ll save something over the years and that should give me enough, however, most people forget about inflation which erodes the purchasing power of your money over time. The £50,000 you managed to save over the years won’t be worth £50,000 in the future. Think about it like this, if Mike said to a client, ‘I have a great investment idea for you, you put your life savings in here, and it is guaranteed to lose 2 ¼% each year.’ You just wouldn’t do it! This would be madness, but this is the effect inflation has on people who sit on cash for years in a low paying bank account. One 1st class stamp in 1991 cost 24p. Today it is 85p. As far as planning is concerned, do you know how to accurately calculate how much money you are going to need for the rest of your life so you can live an independent and dignified retirement? In other words, do you know what your number is?
Mike teaches you how and explains this in detail in his book.

Law & Finance here!’, get me off this ride! – If you had managed to get out of your seat while upside down, that would be permanent loss. Yet you keep going until the ride reaches the end and you come out of it unscathed. Markets go up and down all the time, but long-term history has proven they go up much more than down over time. Explaining concepts like these to clients is key to managing their expectations.
Another well-worded scenario Mike likes to ask his clients is ‘Do you believe you could save 20% of your income each month?’ Most people say no, however, later, he asks another question, ‘Do you think you could live fairly comfortably on 80% of your monthly income?’ Most people think they could. To be able to live on 80% of your income is effectively to be able to save 20% of it. It was just phrased differently. Mike tells us that a lot of the work he does with his clients is psychological and once you overcome that hurdle, you have passed the most difficult part. Unfortunately, emotions generally trump logic, and this is where Mike can help. Warren Buffett is regarded as the greatest investor that has ever lived and is a great example of someone who has great patience when investing. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos approached Warren Buffett and asked, ‘Your process is so simple and proven to work, why doesn’t everyone do what you do?’ Warren replied, ‘Because no one wants to get rich slowly Jeff.’ Trusting the stock market with your money is something humans are not well-equipped to do. It can be daunting. Mike tells us ‘One of the biggest mistakes investors make is that they confuse volatility with permanent loss.’ He then began to explain that the process of investing money into the stock market is comparable to a rollercoaster. As you strap yourself in, your mind is full of different emotions from fear to excitement and adrenalin and you experience the steep climbs and sharp drops and bends and loop the loops. This is volatility. Midway through a loop the loop and people are screaming ‘get me out of
Mike has only ever invested his clients’ money in things that have always worked. i.e., investing their money in a huge collection of the greatest business in the world. He will never invest their money in fads, flavours of the month, or things that just happen to be working now. This is not investing. This is speculating. Mike prides himself on managing client expectations and being brutally honest with them. He makes it clear to his clients that their investments categorically will fall in value from time to time. Not might or could, they will. The important thing is to stick to the plan and to never be tempted to get off that ‘rollercoaster’ halfway through. He recommends that clients take a ‘slothlike approach’, to investing. Looking at the value every day will not help you in any way, just let time do its thing. This way you won’t be panicking about any temporary drops in the market and therefore won’t be tempted to withdraw it at the wrong time. Imagine if house prices were reported every day on the news. Thankfully, they aren’t so people don’t care to look. Mike has phrased his questions so well over the years that he can determine whether a client understands investing or not in no time at all. He asks his clients, ‘Do you know what Black Monday was in 1987?’ This was the single biggest stock market crash in UK history. And then he asks them, ‘Do you know what the FTSE 100 is?’ It is the 100 biggest companies in the UK. ‘Imagine you had £100,000 invested in the FTSE 100 and the news came on reporting the biggest stock market crash in UK history. ‘What do you think your £100,000 is worth right at that moment?’ Most people say ‘zero’. In fact, the stock market fell by 22% in 48 hours, but you haven’t lost any money because you haven’t cashed it in – remember the rollercoaster, don’t get out when you’re

upside-down. If you thought you would have lost all your money, that would have meant that the 100 largest companies in the UK went bust overnight. And for that to happen, it would be Armageddon territory and your money would be meaningless anyway. Lack of understanding of the stock market means you could potentially make some bad decisions. The stock market is now way higher than back in 1987. Stock markets will suffer big temporary dips occasionally, but they have always come back stronger to reach new highs. Mike always works on a ‘no surprises’ policy by explaining everything important, very clearly so that the phone never rings with the dreaded, ‘You never said this could happen.’ This was the main reason why he wrote the book in the way it has been written to ensure everybody can understand it. The book is for everybody, whether you have just finished your education, halfway through your life or just about to retire. He is certain that everybody will learn something from it and if the reader follows it through with actions, then they will save tens or even hundreds of thousands through their lifetime. And where does Mike see himself 5 years from now? ‘I love what I do, and I will continue to ensure my clients remain on the right track.’ He may reduce his hours and pass on clients to younger members of the team but ultimately, he doesn’t want to stop. Another book may make an appearance in the future focusing solely on how to be a better investor. Director at Manning & Company, Behavioural Investment Coach, member of the Parliamentary Financial Review Team and the UK Leaders Council, 2nd in the South West for Top-Rated Advisor by client reviews on ‘VouchedFor’ and not forgetting, great friend to his clients, Mike has gained a lot of knowledge, understanding, and trust throughout his career that he would now like to share with you, the reader. To buy his book, head to www.lulu. com or Amazon and other online book retailers. It comes in hardback, paperback, and Kindle versions with varying prices from £2.99-£29.95. He is also releasing an audiobook version very soon!
