GET YOUR GARDEN READY FOR SUMMERTIME Get a head start and begin pruning your garden ready for spring and summer.
D
uring the warmer months, we spend a lot more time in the garden rather than indoors therefore it’s important to keep it looking nice so that when the sun does decide to come out, your garden will be ready for you. I have compiled the best tips and tricks for gardening in February as well as ways to make your garden feel like a mini oasis and a place where you’ll want to spend time in.
Planting Gardening in February tends to happen towards the end of the month once most of the frosty weather has passed. Gardening is seasonal therefore if we do end up getting the Beast from the East again, then we will have to put the gardening tools down
months. Start sowing seeds of hardy annuals such as cosmos and greenhouse crops such as tomatoes. You can also sow seeds of cool-season plants like kale, broad beans, lettuce and sweet peas if you don’t own a heated propagator and grow lamp. Make sure you keep your seeds in pots placed on a warm, sunny window sill. Preparing your potatoes ready to be planted can be done in February. The process of encouraging seed potatoes into growth before planting is known as ‘chitting’. You can still plant seed potatoes if they haven’t been chitted but it will give them a head start, you can purchase seed potatoes from Endsleigh Garden Centre and Otter Nurseries. Although February is early on in the year to be gardening, it’s actually a fairly busy month for pruning. You can start pruning Clematis, Wisteria, Winter Jasmine, Hydrangea, Buddleia, Cornus, Mahonia, Evergreen shrubs, Climbing and Bush roses. Spring flowering shrubs can be pruned after flowering, usually in early summer so don’t prune these in February or you will cut off the new buds. Lilies, Anemone, Crocosmia and other late-spring flowering bulbs can be planted during February/March which will bring a wider array of colours when spring comes along.
Landscaping
for a little while longer but being in an area that doesn’t get much snow… if any, means that we can get ahead and begin sowing seeds in February. Sowing seeds early on in the year means you will have longer to enjoy them throughout the warmer

Creating an oasis in your garden can be difficult and expensive to achieve but you can begin by thinking about what you use your garden for the most. Do you have a busy family and host lots of BBQs and mini football games? Do you prefer using the garden to plant and grow your own vegetables and enjoy a cup of tea? Or do you use your garden as an escape from day-to-day life with calming features and places to relax and unwind? Whatever it is, it’s time to make some changes to ensure you are making the most of your outdoor space. If hosting dinner parties and BBQ’s is your forte, then your priority might be the dining section of your garden. Ensure that the table is big enough for your guests with the added

Home option of some shade during the summer months. This can be done with garden parasols or a natural pergola. The green-fingered individuals may want to focus more on a space to grow vegetables and sow seeds therefore, a large grass area may not be required if you are short of space. You can also purchase mini pop-up greenhouses if your garden is too small for a greenhouse. These work just as well as a standard greenhouse and offer shelving options and different sizes and heights to fit your space. The tranquil garden can be achieved by planting easy-to-care plants and flowers and focusing on spaces that are comfortable to relax in. This may mean investing a little bit of money on a comfortable outdoor sofa, chair or even a hammock! There is nothing more relaxing than the sound of water trickling away therefore if you aren’t lucky enough to have a babbling brook at the bottom of your garden (I wish!) then a water feature could be the perfect addition to your private oasis. To help you create the garden of your dreams, Man For All Seasons covers all types of garden services and maintenance from garden design and landscaping to pruning and planting. With a large team of gardeners, designers and builders, your garden will be in very capable hands! Please find more information and how to contact them on the next page.
Low Maintenance Alternatives If gardening isn’t your thing at all, using a patio to break up the grass will keep your garden easy to look after. Artificial grass can look very realistic if executed well so if you are just wanting a space to soak up the summer sun, then artificial grass maybe something to think about. Knight Fencing offer a wide range of artificial grass as well as timber decking boards to create an effortlessly manicured garden.

Fencing
Bringing The Outside In
The border around your garden is just as important as the garden itself because it may become a bit of an eyesore if it’s old and tired. Knight Fencing offer heavy-duty fencing that lasts with a 10year anti-rot guarantee. With a variety of different wooden fences with beautiful trellis tops or straight panels, Knight Fencing can give you the best backdrop to your garden. They also offer gazebos,
This past year we have seen more people purchasing houseplants and opting for large, open plan living with bi-folding doors in a bid to get closer to nature and the outdoors. The garden doesn’t have to stop at the boundaries of the brick walls of your home. Conservatories are perfect additions to the home which can increase the value of your property as well as giving you a room that feels like your outdoors but in the warmth of the four walls. Bi-folding doors have grown massively in popularity over recent years as it gives you the option to completely lose the fourth wall leading to the garden and offer an alfresco feel.
Increase Property Value
Knight Fencing
Over the past couple of years, we have really learnt to value our gardens. When it comes to selling your home, buyers often take the garden into account. ‘A beautifully executed garden adds immediate appeal and desirability’ says Cheryl Cummings.

Support SHOP Plymouth LOCAL Businesses! Support your local this year! Find out some of the best local businesses right here in Plymouth.
S
upporting local businesses not only keeps the shops running and shop owners happy but it also has positive impacts on the local community by creating more jobs and footfall to the local area.
In my opinion, it is far more exciting to shop in independent shops as opposed to large corporate stores because you never quite know what you’re going to find! An individual take on a shop or an online company always catches my eye first as I know they are passionate about they product they are selling. Independent shops are healthier for the environment. Most small shops these days are very picky (but in a good way) about how their stock is shipped and what type of packaging is used. These small, yet important, details are what we need for a sustainable future. Plymouth offers a wide range of independent businesses, all only a stone’s throw away, therefore, we have gathered together a range of brilliant independent businesses, all local to Plymouth for you.

PLYMOUTH BASED WOOD WORKSHOP ANNOUNCES MILLENNIUM MOVE Image by Dom Moore
The Albion Workshop, Plymouth’s public access wood workshop facility, will soon be moving to a new, purpose built workshop in the Millennium building on Union Street
A
fter originally opening in January 2020 on Connaught Lane in Mutley, Plymouth, community wood workshop The Albion Workshop are pleased to announce that they will soon be moving to exciting new purpose built premises in the Millennium building on Union Street, working in partnership with Nudge and Eat Work Art. Established in 2018, The Albion Workshop is a Community Interest Company (CIC) providing public access to a fully equipped professional wood workshop. They plan to expand their offering to include creative short courses and workshops, whilst continuing to support small local businesses, providing rentable bench space, and access to high quality machinery. Founded by Neil Dodd, a Plymouth based touring sound engineer and self taught carpenter, the workshop began as a side project, where he intended to fulfil his ambition of becoming a guitar builder. Developing into a business where Neil was able to share the space and its machinery, the workshop now has over 30 members, two full time tenants, and provides shopfitting and fabrication services to a host of clients around Plymouth and beyond. Since the workshop was opened in 2020, the team have been commissioned to create tables and planters for the co-working space

at Market Hall in Devonport, building furniture for Roam Brewery, Early Bird Cafe and Bulletproof Brewery, refitting Plymouth Gin’s gift shop on Southside Street, as well as building the sheds at Nudge’s indoor shopping arcade The Plot, to name just a few. Neil said, “The workshop has always been a passion project, with myself and the other directors Ryan and Lauren, trying to make it work alongside full time employment. The funding that Nudge have helped secure from The UK Community Renewal Fund will allow us to realise the bigger vision we have always had for the workshop, by employing full & part time staff to create a brand new bespoke facility, in response to the needs of our members, tenants and the wider creative community.” He continued, “During the construction phase of the new workshop, we will be looking to support members of the music industry, which has been so badly affected by Covid, providing jobs for those wishing to enter into a new career in construction. We also aim to support getting more women into the construction industry, as well as a longer term focus on evening out the gender split of women in the woodworking sector by having female led workshops and inductions. Hannah Sloggett, co-founder and co-director of Nudge, said, “We loved working with Albion to get The Plot up and running, so being able to offer them a space at The Millennium building where they can offer opportunities to the local community - support small businesses, develop skills, and help people move into employment - it will be an asset to the street. Eat Work Art and Nudge are really happy to be creating space for The Albion Workshop to grow their ambitions”

Nudge Community Builders was set up in 2017 by local people living in Stonehouse, Plymouth. From kickstarting the Union Street Party, to taking over unloved buildings along Union Street and turning them into community focused spaces, Nudge work hard to make positive, lasting changes, helping local businesses and people to be brave, creative, resilient and healthy, supporting themselves and their local community. Nudge secured funding from the UK Community Renewal Fund to help The Albion Workshop to create a purpose-built workshop which will be located alongside other businesses (yet to be announced) on the ground floor of the Millennium Building on Union Street. Eat Work Art has partnered with Nudge to breathe life into the magnificent Millennium building, and further elevate Plymouth’s arts and culture scene on a national scale. Alongside the vision of creating an outstanding music and entertainment venue, the project aims to attract a vast network of creatives keen to perform, create and make use of the various spaces in the venue in inspirational ways. With construction on the new workshop commencing soon, and plans to open in late Spring 2022, the Albion Workshop will continue to offer inductions, memberships and bench space at their current Mutley Plain location. All new members of The Albion Workshop are required to complete an induction session. These will take place on most Saturdays throughout the year. To find out about the next available date, or book an induction, email info@thealbionworkshop.com. Anyone interested in finding out more is invited to make an appointment to see the workshop - get in touch on Instagram, Facebook or by emailing info@thealbionworkshop.com.

NATIONAL PIZZA DAY 9th February 2022 Some would call it the best day of the year… Wednesday the 9th of February is National Pizza Day! Join us as we celebrate National Pizza Day.
W
ednesday 9th February brings us National Pizza Day and what better way to spend the middle of the week than stuffing your face with some delicious pizza? There is a pizza for everyone to enjoy whatever your requirements and taste buds; whether you’re continuing with Veganuary or if you just love the controversial pineapple on pizza. Celebrated on February 9th each year – National Pizza Day is a day that celebrates all things pizza, where you can enjoy one of the most popular and iconic dishes in the world. Here are a few ways you can celebrate National Pizza Day this February:
socks, pop on the latest episode of your favourite TV show and get ordering. You could even have a pizza party with your friends or family. Bulk order in the Domino’s and enjoy a night of fun and games whilst tucking into some yummy pizza!
Home-made Why not challenge yourself and make some sumptuous home-made pizzas to celebrate National Pizza Day. Grab the kitchen scales and get kneading some dough or buy some shop-bought bases... for those of
Takeaway Who doesn’t look a cheeky mid-week takeaway?! There’s nothing more satisfying than treating yourself after a long week in the office to a cheesy, greasy pizza and the best thing about takeaways is that you don’t even have to leave the house. So, get snuggled up in your pj’s and fluffy
you that want to cheat a little. And if you struggle with the dietary requirements that come with vegan or non-gluten diets then homemade pizzas will allow you to easily cater for your own needs without being made to feel awkward or fussy. The great thing about home-made pizzas is that you can be as creative as you want and adventurous with your flavours all on a budget. Turn National Pizza Day into a fun activity for all of the family to enjoy or even make a date night out of it.
Eat Out Plymouth offers a whole host of delicious pizza restaurants. From chain restaurants to more local, independent diners you are lost for choice in Plymouth. Here at OM, one of our favourite places to grab pizza is The Stable, where you’ll be served with flavoursome pizzas suited to all diets. Whether you’re a vegan, gluten-intolerant or the odd one out that loves ham and pineapple on pizza there are plenty of options for all. And the best thing is that all the family are welcome to celebrate National Pizza Day at The Stable... even the dog (although maybe a doggy biscuit for them instead of pizza). If authentic, hand made sourdough is more your pizzas style then you must visit Knead Pizza, a hidden gem located in Stonehouse. For a relaxed atmosphere and pizzas that’ll leave your tastebuds tingling for days don’t miss out on scrumptious sourdough with all of your favourite toppings on this iconic day. Knead Pizza has got all of your pizza kneads covered to celebrate National Pizza Day this February.

French onion soup (Serves 4) • • • • • • • • • •
50g butter 1 tbsp olive oil 1kg onions, halved and thinly sliced 1 tsp sugar 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 2 tbsp plain flour 250ml dry white wine 1.3l hot strongly-flavoured beef stock 4-8 slices baguette (depending on size) 140g gruyère, finely grated
