Alan Rogers - Executive Director, b-side CIC “Moments Not Monuments” The presentation begins with an interactive session, using my own variation and observations of the Sagot-Duvauroux ‘four box model’. It is more fun than it sounds! It gives a schematic and simplified version of the contemporary art world and populates it with careers and personalities. This is followed by a brief exploration of careers that exist OUTSIDE of this structure: that don’t behave with reference to contemporary art markets, which have other intentions, inspirations and aims. We might look at the current goals of the Arts Council in relation to this argument. Finally, there will be a snapshot of a small selection of projects that I have personally made, curated or managed that demonstrate the reality of working outside the four-box model. I would like to give some practical advice on funding and managing these projects, together with their artistic objectives. This will include projects with b-side.org.uk and as Cultural Coordinator of the ‘Maritime Mix’ London 2012 Cultural Olympiad by the Sea.

about the speaker Alan trained as a painter and arts educator at Exeter College of Art & Design, Glasgow School of Art and University of Wales Institute Cardiff. He has worked nationally and internationally across 4 continents and 11 countries as an artist-in-residence, curator, public artist, lecturer, consultant, musician and DJ. He was the course leader in Art Education at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff, a recipient of the Pollock-Krasner Award and has over thirty one-person exhibitions to his name. Moving to Dorset from Venice in 2007, Alan worked as Cultural Coordinator for the Weymouth and Portland 2012 Operation Team, developing the ‘Maritime Mix’ London 2012 Cultural Olympiad by the Sea. Alan is founder and Executive Director of b-side and is a key player in developing cultural infrastructure in Dorset, with a particular focus on public art, new media, festivals and community engagement. He started work again as a visual artist in 2013, with 4 exhibitions of photographs and paintings, including two one-person shows in Venice. www.b-side.org.uk & www.alanrogersarts.co.uk

Susan Leedham - PhD Student, Plymouth University ‘Little bits and pieces’: volunteering, internships, and studying in pursuit of a career in Museums.

Wendy Mason - National Director, AA2A - Artists Access to Art Colleges “Self-employment as a career”

My session will look at how I found my feet after graduating from university with no idea about what I wanted to do. I will focus on all the small, and often seemingly unimportant, volunteering and employment opportunities which can eventually lead to something bigger. I will also discuss the importance of volunteering, and the highs and lows of internships and working for mere pennies! Finally I will focus on the interdisciplinary nature of a CDA (Collaborative Doctoral Award) Studentship, and why I think an extra three years of study will ultimately be beneficial in the long term for my career within the heritage sector.

This presentation will bust the myth that self-employment is only for the most self-motivated graduates and show students that there’s no better time to go self-employed than in a recession. It will explain the ‘What, Why, How, When and Where’ of Self-employment by covering the following…. • Why you might choose self-employment • What self-employment looks like • How to register and start trading, • How to be both employed and self employed

about the speaker

• Where to get support and business advice

“I graduated from UEA in 2010 with a degree in English Literature. I then studied for an MA in Romantic Literature Culture at the University of Leeds. It was whilst studying for my Masters that I realised that I wanted to pursue a career in the heritage culture, although I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do.

• How to decide where to work from

After completing my Masters, I undertook a Traineeship at The Wordsworth Trust in the Lake District where I specialised in Curatorship. With my Traineeship coming to an end, I applied for a collaborative PhD between Plymouth University and the City of Plymouth Museum exploring the ‘Cottonian Collection’. The collaborative nature of the Studentship combines curatorial practice with interdisciplinary academic research, and will help to open up ‘Plymouth’s Greatest Gift’ for the people of Plymouth!”

Wendy Mason set up the Artists Access to Art Colleges programme nearly 20 years ago, with support from Arts Council England and the Crafts Council. It now has AA2A schemes in 28 H.E and F.E. institutions providing 109 placements. The schemes provide visual artists and designer makers with the opportunity to undertake a period of research or realise a project, using workshop and supporting facilities in fine art and design departments. Students benefit from working alongside practicing artists who act as valuable career role models. They also give talks about their work and experiences of self-employment as well as technical demonstrations etc

• How to earn an income from self-employment

about the speaker

Before setting up AA2A, Wendy was a practising jeweller and freelance arts consultant. She was Chair of the Trustees at Yorkshire Artspace and has worked as a funding officer for regional Arts Councils, where she also set up training programmes to encourage self-employment and professional development for artists www.aa2a.org and http://aa2a.biz
