Introduction Today’s job market for graduates is highly competitive. With around half a million students graduating every year, employers have a lot of choice. When selecting, they will look at your qualification as a starting point and will then want evidence of the additional skills and experience you have to offer. At the University of Plymouth, we offer you a range of opportunities to help you make the most of your university experience. Taking up these opportunities will also help make you more employable. Work experience, participation in clubs and societies, voluntary work, your choice of dissertation, being a course representative - these are all things that can add value to your CV and help make you stand out from your peers. This year we are also offering a new opportunity for you to gain additional recognition for your extracurricular activities by launching the Plymouth Award. This award has the endorsement of many prestigious employers, both local and national, and we believe it will help you stand out in today’s crowded job market. This booklet aims to give you an overview of some of the ways of adding value to your University experience. We hope it helps you achieve your goals.

Gateway
is our careers and employability centre and “ Gateway gateway to the University for information, advice and graduate recruitment activities. ” It is open to students, graduates, businesses, community groups, prospective students and members of the public. It is intended to be a gateway between the University and the city. We offer a welcoming and professional one-stop information and advice centre for all our intended users. In essence, we are a quick, accurate, approachable and visible information and signposting service for individuals and organisations. We are open all day from 8.45am – 5.00pm Monday to Thursday, and from 8.45am – 4.30pm on Fridays, both during term time and vacation, so please come and visit us to find out about all the help and support on offer.

The variety of work placements at the University of Plymouth is vast – it may be a compulsory precursor to professional practice after you graduate (eg teaching and education) or alternatively you may opt to gain commercial experience for two weeks up to one year, as is the case in disciplines such as business, arts, technology, psychology and science.
