WELCOME BACK Welcome back to the School of Tourism and Hospitality. I hope that you are enjoying your placement, manage to get a bit of a break in the summer, and feel ready to tackle your important final year of academic study. The placement you have been undertaking will enhance your employability skills considerably, and in your final year you will once more profit from your studies and gain further insights into the different aspects of the industries we’re connected with. There will be numerous opportunities to enhance your studies with fieldwork, guest speakers and workshops. I hope you’ll take advantage of these. The final year will be an exciting time for you. Not only will you have opportunities to conduct your own research, within the honours project, you will be able to begin specialising in some fascinating areas of tourism, hospitality and events through your optional choices. WELCOME BACK Firstly, I wish you all a warm welcome back to Plymouth University, and I am very much looking forward to catching up with each of you on this, our very first, Connect-Up Conference day. The purpose of this event is to assist you in identifying and articulating the skills, knowledge and experience you have gained while on placement, and we have a full, and fun programme of events planned for this morning to help you to do this. During the networking lunch you may find information on the stage 3 modules, and the afternoon is dedicated to providing you with further details of this very important final year. This includes a talk with your Programme Manager, and a meeting with Derek Shepherd, who’ll be discussing the Honours Project. You are also advised to find the time to meet with your Placement Supervisor while you are here. I’m sure you’ve all already learned a great deal from the time you have spent with your placement provider, but I do hope that you make the most of your final months, and remember that, as with all experiences, what you get out of the placement experience depends upon what you put in to it. Do please use your remaining time to network, show initiative, and put yourself forward for further responsibilities. Also, if you wish to return to your placement organisation, don’t be afraid to approach your employer regarding graduate opportunities. Finally, I hope to see you all successfully complete the placement year, and its assessment, so please do ensure you submit your final Progress Reports, and the Placement Project, within the deadlines identified in your handbooks. Remember to contact your Placement Supervisor for further guidance and assistance if needed, and do discuss with your Line Manager if you need their help. I wish you all the very best, and hope you enjoy, and learn from, today’s conference. I look forward to seeing you return in September for your final year, at which time I’ll be asking for volunteers to share your knowledge and experiences with stage 2 students! Both myself and the Employability Team, will also continue to provide support to you, through the Career Investment Programme (CIP), in preparing you for graduation. GUEST SPEAKERS JUNIOR OGUNYEMI Junior is a multi-award winning business starlet and author of the revolutionary book, “How to be a student entrepreneur”. During university he launched successful ventures, creating significant social impact. His inspirational messages have pioneered the current “student-entrepreneur” buzz across the UK. Junior first stepped into the business scene at age 17, just before going into University to study a BSc in Economics at Queen Mary, University of London. He made it his personal goal to raise enough to payoff his
student fees. By graduation, not only did he achieve this; but he also owned a football coaching academy operating in schools and communities across London. Junior chose to become a social entrepreneur because he believes they are pivotal to understanding and improving today’s society, in order to shape and influence a better tomorrow. Make use of the library room booking service for some peace and quiet when revising – or when you are working on a group project.

Do you have to complete a dissertation or final year project? If so, start thinking about topics now and it’s never too early to start reading…

Make useful contacts, whether you’re adding people on Linkedin or making a collection of business cards – these people could be the door to your perfect job.
Pick a language! It’s not too late to think about learning a language, on most courses you can choose from French, Mandarin, German or Spanish in your final year!

Join a society – everyone needs a little downtime, so whether it’s knitting, juggling or playing the Ukulele, an afternoon a week won’t hurt.
* Use real-life examples in your coursework and exams when relating theory – this is where your placement year really comes in handy!

Set up your own business! Visit the Futures Entrepreneurship Centre or the Formation Zone to see what support is available for you!
