Why Pray Together in This Way?
3
“From the beginning two things have been the necessary form and mystery of Christian spirituality. Two things, even before the closing events of the resurrection, ascension, and commission, wove disparate and often renegade believers into an inspirited body of the whole, connected to God and each other.
Common Terms in Fixed-Hour Prayer Lectionary A pre-selected collection of Scripture readings that usually follows the liturgical year in a three year cycle. Reading in this prayer guide are taken from the Revised Common Lectionary Compline The final service of the day in the Christian tradition of fixed-hour prayer. Commits the spent work day and approaching nighttime to God. Collect A short written prayer extolling a member of the Trinity for a divine attribute. It usually includes a petition based on that attribute and the mediation of Jesus Christ. Gloria Patri The “Glory Be” is a ancient Trinitarian hymn of praise often said after the recitation of a Psalm Canticle A hymn or song of praise taken from a passage of Scripture, not from the Psalms.
Like a double helix rendered elegant by complexity and splendid by authority, the amalgam of gospel and shared meal and the discipline of fixed-hour prayer were and have remained the chain of golden connection tying Christian to Christ and Christian to Christian across history, across geography, and across idiosyncrasies of faith. The former is known as the food and sustenance of the Church, the latter as its work.” -Phyllis Tickle, from the introduction to The Divine Hours: Prayers for
Matins Originally referred to the concluding morning service of the monastic prayer cycle. It is now often used by Protestant denominations to refer to any morning service.
The Order of Morning Prayer (Matins) 1) The Opening 2) The Psalms 3) The Readings 4) The Prayers
Antiphon A short response from a congregation (said or sung) in the context of Scripture reading. Proper Part of the Christian liturgy that varies according to the date, in accordance with the Liturgical Year.

Common Texts Memorization of these texts has historically been a vital part of rehearsing and remembering the faith that all Christians share (in all times and places). These standard texts emphasize the theological foundations of Trinity and Incarnation, the well from which all Christian faith and practice springs. The Lord’s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, Gloria Patri Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit; For you have redeemed me, O Lord, O God of truth. Keep us, O Lord, as the apple of your eye; Hide us under the shadow of your wings. Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. The Lord’s Prayer (p. 3) Lord, hear our prayer; And let our cry come to you. Let us pray: Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the hours of this night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of this life may rest in your eternal changelessness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake. Amen. Silence may be kept, and free intercessions and thanksgivings may be offered.
Song of Simeon Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping; that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace. Lord, you now have set your servant free to go in peace as you have promised; For these eyes of mine have seen the Savior, whom you have prepared for all the world to see: A Light to enlighten the nations, and the glory of your people Israel. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Guide us waking, O Lord, and guard us sleeping; that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep we may rest in peace. Let us bless the Lord. Thanks be to God. The almighty and merciful Lord, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, bless us and keep us. Amen.
