COMPLETION OF NARRATIVE + ACTIVITIES WEEK 01 - WEEK 03 Submission of a personal brief is vital to project goals and development. Although some of the suggested proposals are clearly hypothetical, the solutions must demonstrate serious thought in the resolution of the design challenge. There should be clear intentions and objectives to demonstrate appropriate design theme, logical structural systems and the expression of spatial relationships. The completion of the design narrative and the approval of it (dependent on student’s progression rate and timeframe) will be confirmed by the respective tutors of each unit.
1.1 NARRATIVE PROGRAMMING
Narrative My topic interest is about the IsraeliPalestinian conflict that had gone viral in the beginning of 2021. I’ve researched on the topic and focuses on the social aspects of Palestinians. From my studies, Palestinians were facing issues such as famine, poverty, poor access to healthcare etc. Most of the Palestinians became refugees because of invasions from the Israelis whom are desperate with taking over Palestine. Apart from that, I decided to focus on the well-being of refugee children in Palestine. Particularly focusing on children, I realized they’d grown up in harsh conditions with the lack of educational facilities that were destroyed by air forces. Henceforth, most of the refugee children of Palestine have traumatic childhood as they witness the negative impacts of war.
That said, children are the hopes of a country. For this project, I am proposing an educational shelter to take in a number of refugee children for them to learn and accommodate in the shelter. My chosen site is The Investcorp Building at Oxford, UK. Which has an area of 1127sqm. It is also sited inside St Antony’s College, serves as the University of Oxford’s facility for research and teaching on the Arab World, Iran, Israel, Turkey, etc. Therefore, it is also known as a middle east centre in UK. From my research, the UK is able to take in refugee families from Palestine. Therefore, it is possible for the refugee families to send in their children, handicapped with mental or psychological issues, to the educational shelter to seek recovery. The main objectives of the educational shelter are to provide a place to stay, play, study and grow. Speaking of which, children are playful beings, they learn from engaging with the environment, talking to their peers, and making mistakes.
Programming Children should always play in groups to improve their learning and social abilities, supervised by adults to ensure their safety. On the contrary, studies have shown that refugee children from Palestine have really low physical activity because they spent most of their time hiding, taking cover from Israeli’s invasions. Moving on, basic education is necessary for children to communicate or following simple instructions. Most importantly, knowledge can help the children to become more diligent and have better opportunities in the future. Lastly, children should be given freedom to grow. For example, children can learn how to pick up necessary skills, according to their own preferences. Children of different abilities can come around and work together to achieve a stable community.
Now that you’ve understood the basic objectives of the educational shelter, I will now explain about the program concept which are learn, play, rest and social. Based on the 4 main concepts, each concept consists of different type of experiences and qualities for the refugee children to explore. In short, the ‘Learn’ concept is fun, interactive, has reading, and promotes discipline. The ‘Play’ concept focuses on the physical health of children, for them to be active, stay fit, to explore interests and hobbies. The ‘rest’ concept is to ensure the children’s safety, health, and for them to have enough rest and comfort. Lastly will be social as it is important for children to play, work and learn together, while staying independent, developing leadership qualities and to be caring towards their peers.
First and foremost, the target audience of the educational shelter will be age 4 to 15. I will be explaining about the space programming that I think it is suitable for an educational shelter as such. The program flow, is a basic understanding of how the areas are being arranged and in short, the lower ground floor, first floor and mezzanine floor is exclusively for refugee children while ground floor being the only public space and also the main entrance of the facility. Moving on to space programming, Restful & learn, is a combination of sleeping and learning area. It is secluded from the public spaces for more privacy as refugee children are sensitive to public attention. Next will be the Market gallery, where the public is introduced to the feelings of refugee children via facilities provided. It also sells a series of hand-crafted products made by the children. Calm minds is a place where children can meditate to practice mindfulness, boosts the chances of recovering from childhood trauma. It also helps them keep fit and release tension from daily activities.
Care Share acts as a community service activity whereby children who receive donation are required to provide labour service in return, such as cleaning the facility or campus, etc. Basically, it teaches children to be grateful and thankful for the donation. Foodtastic is a canteen where children, and facility workers can eat their meals together. Play to-gather is a playground, designed for young children and teens to exercise and increase their physical activity. Playing together is proven to be healthy and it encourages children to get along with each other. The final space would be health healing, and as obvious as it sounds, it is a small infirmary where children can be examined when they are not feeling well. Children can be treated or receive counselling at Health Healing.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT WEEK 03 - WEEK 05
With Phase 1 completed, we now move to the next phasing of the checkpoint which is Phase 2. In Phase 2, we will be looking into the completion of all the requirements to complete the design phase. Upon finishing Phase 2, there will be no further discussions on the design development and ideation. This is to reiterate that the designing phase will stop at Phase 2 before other elements of working drawings begin to take place in Phase 3.

2.3 FINAL DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
For the following part, I will be explaining about my floor plans, section drawings, axonometric and also the perspectives for the proposed educational shelter. To start off, here’s a cover illustration that I made from how I understand the refugee crisis. As you can see, there are signs of struggle, stress, suffocation and that the butterflies are a symbol of hope and change. I am hoping that the educational shelter can be a sign of hope for the refugees. Small talk aside, I am going to explain some of the material selection chosen for the target spaces via the axonometric drawing. Starting from the very top, mezzanine floor is a working space equipped with durable PVC tables and chairs for office use. Play to-gather on the first floor uses neoprene flooring as an anti-slip rubber material to prevent children from falling down. Oak laminate in foodtastic gives a fresh and nature touch for anyone who is enjoying their meals. Brushed metallic finish is used for the display shelf in Market Gallery as it is long-lasting and low maintenance. The spring mattress is used in the Health Healing which is the infirmary. Vinyl Wood finish is used as flooring in Calm Minds for more natural approach. Lastly, restful learning is painted colorfully to brighten the mood of the children.
Then, I will briefly go through my floor plans starting from the mezzanine floor which has Care Share, and a staff office. Children can read, draw, study under the workers’ supervision. Moving down, this is Foodtastic’s kitchen area, where workers and children can order their food here. The food is then sent down via the dumbwaiter over here. Number 2 is play to-gather. The playground is separated into the young children area and also the younger teens. Both have different facilities to play with. And number three will be the Care Share’s office, where donation items are sorted there. Next will be ground floor, the foodtastic’s canteen is located right under the kitchen and the food is received from the dumbwaiter here, and that number 2 and 3 are market gallery and care share respectively. Lastly will be the lower ground floor, where number 1 here is restful learning, and this part is the learning corner while the other side is the sleeping pods. Number 2 is calm minds, the meditation area. And number three is health healing, the infirmary bay. There is also a shower room and toilets in the lower ground floor.
2.3 FINAL DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
The section drawings can clearly show the space programming of the educational shelter. To briefly repeat, here is foodtastic, kitchen and canteen. This is play to-gather, and number three is careshare, offices and work space. Then number 4 is market gallery, 5 is health healing and 6 will be calm minds. Section B is able to show the other side of lower ground floor, which is number 3, restful learning. Without further ado, let’s move on to the perspectives. To further recap I will be starting from lower ground floor. This is restful learning’s reading and learning corner. This part is where the children reads and there is a collection of toys to be brought inside the learning space. As you can see, this is the corridor of the sleeping pods and this is the entrance of restful learning. Children can walk down further to reach the reading corner. The design development of the learning corner is equipped with various of fun elements. For example, there are puzzle and throwing games that are educational related. A place to read books quietly, and there is also a set of stairs behind for the children to climb through the interactive tunnel to the auditory room, where it has a hammock floor.
The auditory room is equipped with headphones and a projector for the children to watch and learn. As mentioned, this will be the reading corner, and behind this wall is also a resting space for the children to read. In short, this facility is designed to cater for kinesthetic, auditory and visual learners. Quickly moving on, health healing is located outside of restful learning as it is more convenient for the workers to check the health condition of children. As mentioned, children can also voluntarily visit the infirmary when they are feeling under the weather or in seek of counselling. On the other side, calm minds is a meditation room for children to increase their physical activity and also improve mental health. There is also greenery to improve the mood of the children. Now we are onto ground floor, where the market gallery Is located. The carousel is a display of musical photo frames that plays the stories of the refugee children. Infront of the market gallery is a donation area where it has a fortune wheel for the donor to win a prize from the shelf. The donation items are then transported via high velocity and pressure through the pipe, travelling through the ceiling and up to the care share’s sorting office. This area is also part of the sensory experience, where the visitors can feel the physical emotions of the Palestine’s refugee children by reaching their hands inside the hole.
2.3 FINAL DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
Onto the first floor, it will be play togather, a playground for the children to enjoy with their peers. There is seating available around the playground for the adults to supervise the children. In the middle of Play to-gather, it has a ball pool and also a slide for the young children. From this perspective, the left side will be the young teen’s area and the right side for the young children. As mentioned, the children area has books, drawing equipment and also a platform for the children to play with their toys. On the other hand, young teens will preferably to play here as there is a climbing zone, rope swinging, and trampoline. These activities are proven to be helpful to increase their physical strength. The design development of the climbing zone is as shown, where the platforms are connected to the steel structure, attached from floor to ceiling and then there will be safety netting around the climbing zone to ensure safety.
For the final part, let’s move on to Foodtastic which is on the ground and first floor. The food trays are colourcoded differently and children, teen and adults are assigned for a different colour. This way, it eases the food preparation as there is a standard menu for all age groups. This would be the canteen, where people can enjoy the view outside as well. Last but not least, care share on the first and mezzanine floor. The first floor of care share acts as a sorting office while the mezzanine floor is a working space where children can read or have study groups here. The children can also have a great view of the outside too.

Phase 04 (40%)
EXHIBITION (PREPARATION) + FINAL PRESENTATION WEEK 10 - WEEK 14
Crafting the design outcomes towards a final virtual exhibition production will require the synergy of various teams in terms of exhibition curation and ideation. By this phase, all design production and outcome has been completed, submitted and is no longer at the development stage. This phase focuses solely on the production of the virtual exhibition and methods for the dissemination should be considered by now. Effective visual communication and ease of access to members of the public should also be considered during this phase towards the final outcome.

REFLECTION Stuck in a pandemic, everything we do eventually became online and submissions are in softcopies. I saved a lot of money from travelling, printing, model-making etc. However, the hardest part of online production is the isolation. I don't get many opportunities interacting with the lecturers and my peers, and it's very easy to lose focus when working from home. Our final year project is also done online, but thankfully schools and universities were opened for operations. Therefore we get to spend some time at the university. Eventually, the final exhibition is online as 80% of our works were forged online. Another challenging issue is the topic that I'd chosen as the lecturers advised me refugees, wars etc are really sensitive topics. I was given many feedback on how to tackle this topic and I still have a lot to learn. The jury advised me that I should interview the refugees to really know how they feel and to make site visits to schools that are catered for PTSD children etc. I do feel like there is a lot of room for improvement. Overall, I believe that much more can be done to fully support the refugee children, not only providing them a place as a shelter.
