Assignment 01

REFLECTION WEEK 01 - WEEK 05 In this assignment, there are in total of 6 of us working together and it had been a long time since I've had such a huge discussion. There were many times that I couldn't understand or misunderstood the opinions of my classmate but eventually we had it all sorted out. The assignment itself wasn't hard but it is just time-consuming because we had to study UBBL and GFP to hand-pick the suitable content, and I've learned that drawings play a big part in this assignment as it is easier to understand and explain to the audience.

Assignment 02 (20%)

KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE FORUM WEEK 01 - WEEK 12 This task is to encourage more democratic exchanges whereby in the online forum, each student has a voice that will be heard by anyone who chooses to read his or her comments. SUMMARY

27TH APRIL 2022

ABSTRACT An interior designer’s work is not simply beautifying an interior space, it includes a blend of art and scientific studies in order to achieve a pleasant and functional space based on the users’ needs. It is a work of field which requires professional practices and training; however, a drastic quantity of unlicensed interior designers and firms can be found in the society nowadays. This can lead to doubts regarding the importance and the rights of having a license. Is a license really a necessity for practicing interior design?

In my opinion, it is wrong to practice interior design with a false license. Without proper guidance it may lead to unimaginable consequences. The license is essential for practicing interior design especially when an individual wants to set up an interior design consultancy. According to Architect Act 1967 (amendments Feb 2015), act 117, Clause 33, individuals that obtain registration by false pretense shall be guilty of an offense and shall, on conviction, be liable to a fine not exceeding fifty thousand ringgit or imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years or to both. With that said, to become a registered interior designer requires to comply with the registration procedures by miid. According to Architect Act 1967 (amendments Feb 2015), Act 117, Clause 27D, individuals that holds qualification recognised by the Board can be registered as a Graduate Interior Designer which is eligible to sit for examinations and is a Corporate Member of the Malaysian Institute of Interior Designers shall be entitled on application to be registered as an Interior Designer.

SUMMARY

United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

18TH MAY 2022

ABSTRACT The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) serve as a high-level platform for collective policy creation and decision making. There are a total of 17 goals in the UNSDG and it consist of factors such as ending poverty, quality of education, economic growth, gender equality etc. These 17 goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all". The 2030 Agenda launched in the 2015 is aimed to end poverty and hunger, realize the human rights of all, achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women, and ensure the lasting protection of the planet and its natural resources. Discuss its importance and how it impacts policy makers, architects & interior designers. How can you play a role?

UNSDG GOALS

From my understanding, the UNSDG sets out a vision for sustainable development with a 17 goals to provide the world a better place for mankind. Where its universal values had set a 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to emphasise on the importance in putting equality and nondiscrimination encompassing not only economic and social rights but also civil, political, and cultural rights, and the right to development. In Malaysia, for people to achieve the vision that UNSDG had set, as interior designers we had to actually to follow the GBI Design Reference Guide that provides guideline to design sustainable spaces and buildings. The book itself consists of assessment criteria score summary that designers can cross check with energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality etc. After calculating the scores that comply with the table, designers will get a total score for their classification of GBI, starting from the minimum score – 50 as the passing mark for A certified class, then silver, gold and platinum as follows.

FIRE SAFETY 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM

The extent of responsibility of a designer regarding fire safety

SUMMARY 1ST JUNE 2022

ABSTRACT Ultimately, fire protection design in buildings is provided to protect users in an event of a fire or to reduce the risk of property and human-life loss. However, if the public users do not have a clear understanding of the design, or are unable to perform as designers’ expectations in an emergency, will the design serve its best purpose? For instance, a public user who does not fully understand how a fire extinguisher works, or users who failed to understand instructions during an emergency. In other instances, public users who lack knowledge or do not follow the rules on fire safety, therefore resulting in great harm. How much can a designer do to ensure the safety of the public? In fact, fire safety design can only reduce risk, and it requires public cooperation to work effectively. On one hand, strict UBBL-laws are important for designers to follow strictly, on the other hand, should public users' understanding of fire prevention and awareness to follow rules strictly need to be strengthened?

REFERENCE 1. https://shorturl.ae/NnxFg 2. https://scihub.hkvisa.net/10.1016/j.firesaf.2009.08 .005 3.https://www.thestar.com.my/opinion/let ters/2019/04/08/dont-take-fire-safety-forgranted 4. https://stomp.straitstimes.com/singapo re-seen/4-taken-to-hospital-afterclutter-in-common-corridor-catchesfire-at-telok-blangah

5.https://www.straitstimes.com/singapo re/community/tolong-tolong-2-menclimb-on-to-hdbledge-to-escape-pmdfire-in-jurong-that

Truthfully, according to the fire protection design in buildings guided using the Guide to Fire protection in Malaysia and UBBL, it is known that designers, architects, fire administrator and also the local authority had revised the fire safety hazards of the building and to provide not only one type of fire precautions but many ways for the public to put off the fire, and at the same time to escape from the fire via the fire escape route that leads to the assembly point. However, the newspaper had also published about the unawareness of public about fire safety. For example, in Singapore that had been a fire hazard but public were unable to access the staircase as the path was blocked and misused as a storage. In conclusion, it is inevitable that the ministry of fire protection should strengthen the rules and regulations or to staple a fine against the law breakers to publicly bring awareness the importance of fire protection.

FINANCIAL LITERACY

2:00 PM - 3.00 PM

17TH MAY 2022

FINANCIAL LITERACY FOR FRESH GRADUATES I really enjoyed this webinar because the speaker gives me very useful financial tips for saving, and investment and he strongly emphasized the phrase “tell your money where to go”. The 50/30/20 rule is suitable for people that are already having a stable financial income. However, fresh graduates may have to stick to a budget plan and it is also wise to use a financial tracking app such as MAE, Spendee Budget or MoneyLover to track our spending. Basically, there are a list of Do’s and Don’ts that Mr. Fairuz had explained. The Do’s are investment preparation, zero-based budgeting, how to build healthy conversation on life first big purchase. On the other hand, the Don’ts are – never succumb to influence or pressure and unwise use of credit card. In conclusion, financial literacy had really encouraged me to save money for my future plans.

Most importantly, Ms. Aegene had emphasized that a profile should be clear, short and precise to attract the reader’s attention and always try to follow more of the people around us to get better connection that could give us better opportunities. 18TH MAY 2022

BEST PRACTICES IN CURATING ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CV AND PORTFOLIO Ar. Alif had presented his content very short and precise and it is exactly as the webinar’s title suggest. He had stated the Do’s and Don’t’s while writing a resume and preparing a portfolio for interviews. He had given many samples on how to work with resumes that are appealing to the interviewer. He also suggested that body language and attire is fairly important while attending an interview. Aside from that, it is also important to know that the works that we demonstrate must start off with the best student work then the second best at the last, and to always study the company’s profile before attending the interview because that will earn extra points while answering the interviewer’s questions. In summary, I think that a portfolio should not be limited to only words and personal details but to include various of sketches and illustrations to compile an appealing architecture portfolio.

REFLECTION WEEK 09 - WEEK 14 Last but not least, the final assignment is related to my main module which mainly studies about the GBI, Fire safety and also the application of UBBL, to propose or to explain the building structure or design whether it is in compliance to the Malaysian Standard. I find it difficult at first because there are too many things to write about but thankfully our lecturer was kind enough to prepare us a check-list and also provided us lecture slides to help me understand fire safety better.
