NDLEA intercepts Europe-bound 58kg cocaine, meth at Lagos, Abuja airports

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have intercepted consignments of illicit drugs including cocaine, methamphetamine and its precursor chemical, ephedrine going to the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand and Cyprus at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja and some courier companies.

NDLEA stated this in a statement issued yesterday by Femi Babafemi, Director, Media & Advocacy, said at least three traders at the Trade Fair Complex in Ojo area of Lagos: Nwudele Basil Christopher; Chiedu Ezenwani Francis and Donatus Nwojiji have been arrested in connection with attempts to export 52.10 kilograms of ephedrine, a precursor chemical and active ingredient for the production of methamphetamine, concealed in bunches of fishing threads and packed among other items in jumbo sacks that were

intercepted at the SAHCO export shed of the Lagos airport on Sunday 31st January and Monday 1st February.

“It took the painstaking efforts of NDLEA officers and deployment of sniffer dogs to be able to discover the complex mode of concealment of the illicit substance.

“At the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, NAIA, Abuja, vigilant operatives of the Agency on Monday 13th February intercepted a 29-year-old Apeh Kelvin Ogbonna while attempting to board Turkish airline flight TK0624 going through Istanbul to Cyprus, with 4.5 kilograms of methamphetamine concealed in false bottoms of his travelling bag. The suspect claimed he was running a boutique business in Enugu before he decided to travel to Cyprus for a degree in Business Administration.

“At three different courier firms in Lagos, operatives intercepted two cocaine consignments weighing 400 grams each, going to United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. They were hidden in walls of

cartons used for packaging. Two other consignments containing 500 grams and 100 grams of methamphetamine were also blocked from being shipped to New Zealand after they were discovered concealed in food items.

“No fewer than 2,684,900 pills of tramadol and other pharmaceutical opioids were seized by operatives during interdiction operations in some states in the past week. In Adamawa, a total of 250,000 pills of tramadol and exol-5 as well as 1800ml of codeine neatly concealed in the reserve fuel tank of a trailer from Onitsha, Anambra state were seized at Mubi and a dealer, Hussaini Ibrahim (a.k.a Bafu) arrested.

“While a total of 279,000 pills of tramadol 200mg and 225mg were recovered from a suspect, Hammajan Suleman, along Okene-Abuja highway in Kogi, on Monday 13th February, 376 blocks of skunk weighing 229.36kgs and a Toyota Camry car used in conveying the consignment from Edo state enroute Kano by another suspect,

“In the same vein, two suspects: Christian Nnachor, 23 and Chinonso Obiora, 20, arrested with 1,843,900 tablets of Diazepam and 300,000 pills of Exol-5 by soldiers along Abuja-Kaduna express road were transferred to the Kaduna State Command of NDLEA on Monday 13th February while Christopher Maduka, 43, was arrested with 10,000 ampoules of pentazocine injection by NDLEA operatives on Saturday 18th Feb. along AbujaKaduna highway.

“In Kano, Ahmed Suraj Rabiu was nabbed with 89 bottles of codeine syrup in Badawa area of the state, while Amadu Musa and three others were arrested in Kofar Mata with 53 blocks of cannabis weighing 41.9kgs. In Niger state, a trans-border trafficker, Abdullahi Isah was arrested along Jebba-Mokwa highway with 188 blocks of skunk that weighed 107 kilograms, which he was attempting to take to Niger republic.”

The Wife of Kebbi Governor, Dr Zainab Bagudu has vowed to sustain the fight against the menace of cancer even after leaving office in the next few weeks.

Bagudu, who is also the Chairperson of the Medicaid Cancer Foundation disclosed this in Abuja at an interactive session with Journalists on her stewardship from 2015 to date.

According to her, ”the cancer epidemic will keep on recurring. It will keep on increasing and more needs to be done to tame it.

”There is also an imbalance in the required interventions and adequate funding. Cancer should be seen as an emergency.

”I will sustain my ongoing grassroots mobilisation to create the needed awareness in the above direction.”

Bagudu further said an immediate action was desired by the government and all the stakeholders to stem the tide of the disease, saying, ” a stitch in time, they say, saves nine.”

She promised to work with government, CSOs and all the critical stakeholders to increase funding to the cancer fight, as well as shore up preventive measures.

Bagudu added: ‘It is a very big problem in Nigeria as the country is not doing enough considering the population of the country.

”Strong partnerships are very important in this direction just as grassroots mobilisation is also very crucial.

”Kebbi state has done a lot. We have a cancer control plan and the indigent cancer fund.

”There is also the health insurance scheme especially at the PHC level and we must do more to [provide more actions.”

She also expressed gratitude to her husband and all the stakeholders for the passage of the child and women rights laws in the state.

She listed them as : VAPP law, Child Rights and GBV Acts, saying that the action of the state government led by her husband, Sen. Abubakar Bagudu was commendable.

Bagudu also stressed the need for the people especially the victims and parents of victims of rape to always speak out and report such cases.

”The people should take the right action and get the right evidence. Sensitisation should also be sustained,” she urged. (NAN)

Abuja clergyman predicts peaceful 2023 elections, admonishes Nigerians to pray

Rev. Adedoyin Adeyinka, Senior Pastor of the House of Truth Church, Abuja on Sunday admonished Nigerians to pray for the peace of the nation.

for the country is to pray, while taking his reading from the Book of Jeremiah 29:7 which says “seek the peace of the city”.

He said a lot of believers put their hope on what men will do for them

instead of what God will do, adding that God is the author and finisher of all things.

According to Adeyinka, the 2023 general elections will go well because God is involved in the peace of Nigeria.

Naira redesign: APC displaying true federalism – Keyamo

Mr Festus Keyamo, spokesperson for the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) says the court case instituted by some APC governors over the Federal Government’s naira redesign policy is an indication of true federalism.

Keyamo said this when he spoke during the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) forum in Abuja.

He said that for APC governors to take a stand against the federal government on the policy, it showed that Sen. Bola Tinubu if elected on Feb. 25 as president, would ensure true federalism in the country.

NAN reports that some APC governors had sued the Federal Government over the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“People are calling for true federalism. What you are seeing in display is true federalism.

“They should support APC because APC is now displaying the character of true federation where the component parts can disagree with the federal government.

“Don’t forget that it was Tinubu that started it long ago when he was governor, he was always taking the federal government to court on every issue to tell you

that the component parts of the country can disagree with the federal government.

“We are not going to sell off Nigerians because of party politics. That is what the governors have shown the world that we are not prepared to sell you out because of loyalty to the centre,” he said.

Keyamo, also a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), said that the policy would not affect the chances of the APC at the poll.

“It is those who don’t mean well in the implementation whereas President Muhammadu Buhari means very well.“You know the President is the anti-

corruption champion of Africa. What he is doing is a clear indication that he is holding fair to his principle till the last day.

“Every single governor that has gone to court fighting for the masses, fighting for the people to get succour, they are all APC governors.

“Now the opposition interpretes it to mean that the APC governors are looking for money to buy votes, that is why they are fighting to get the policy reversed,” Keyamo said.

He added: ”What the APC governors are doing is just being patriotic and purely altriustic”. (NAN)

2023 census: NPC organises capacity building workshop for media professionals

The leadership of the National Population Commission (NPC) on Friday organized capacity building workshop for the media professionals on effective coverage of the 2023 population and Housing census.

In an interviewed with newsmen after the workshop, the Federal Commissioner representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) at the National Population Commission, Hon. Joseph Shazin Kwali, said he would remain committed to enlighten the residents of the FCT on the 2023 Population and Housing census.

He charged the journalists to deem it necessary to disseminate information to the grassroots for the sake of the people living there.

He also appealed to the Journalists to shun negative reporting on the 2023 census, saying that journalists should make sure the poor are well informed about the National census.

On his remarks, Shazin Kwali, advised inhabitants of Abuja to co-operate with Enumerators during the 2023 Population and Housing census.

Gwagwalada GDSS Principal tasks FCT Education Secretariat, SEB on multi-purpose hall

The principal of Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) in Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Alhaji Bello Sulaiman Ajekunle, has appealed to the FCT Education Secretariat as well as the leadership of the FCT Secondary Education Board (SEB) to erect a multi-purpose hall in the school for the sake of conducting major examinations and other social activities in the institution.

He said: “The school is also in need of furniture for both staff and students as well as the renovation of some dilapidated blocks of classrooms to meet the increasing surge of students who seek admission into the school but cannot be admitted as a result of the shortage of these facilities”.

According to the Principal, “the school lacks standard laboratories and modern laboratories and modern laboratory equipment and facilities to make the students compete favourably with their

counterparts in other schools in the area of sciences”.

Ajekunle, who made the appeal while delivering his speech during the school’s 3rd Cultural Day ceremony held on Wednesday, further said; ‘As old as the school is, we do not have standard ICT Laboratory and gargets to properly equip the students in the area of ICT.

The president we should elect, NSCIA counsels electorate ahead polls

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), the apex body overseeing the affairs of about 150 million Muslims in Nigeria, has laid bare the qualities of the type of President it believes Nigeria needs, who will receive the support of Muslims in the country.

It also called on the electorate to be conscious of the candidate they will elect for president in view of the current realities in the country and the expectation of the rest of the world from Nigeria.

These were according to a statement issued yesterday signed by Prof. Salisu Shehu, Deputy Secretary General, and Arc. Zubairu Haruna Usman-Ugwu, the Director of Administration of the NSCIA. The statement was titled ‘The Charter of expectation of Nigerian Muslims from the next government.”

The statement noted that while protecting the interest of Islam and Muslims in a multi-religious Nigeria, the Council said it has also been championing the cause of good governance, and is convinced that it is only in the atmosphere of good governance that the whole country

The NSCIA said it wishes to discharge its responsibility to both the country and its citizens by engaging with the process of leadership recruitment and sharing its views and concerns with its members on the coming general elections.

Considering Nigeria’s rising population expected to hit 300 million by 2030 and 400 million by 2050, the NSCIA said Nigeria needs statesmen with vision to strengthen our institutions of governance, fight corruption tooth and nail and prioritise competence, ethics and moral character. “We particularly need a leadership that will appreciate the future and plan for it,” it said.

It said among other things: “We need leaders with the vision, courage and discipline to plan for this teeming population.

“We expect that the discussion around our political circle should be about how to provide food, health care, housing, education and jobs for this population over the next 25 years; knowing very well that failure to do

this is a recipe for another disaster.

“It is this context that the NSCIA wishes to convey to our presidential candidates, as well as Nigerian citizens who will be electing them in the coming general elections, our concerns and our expectations from the incoming President/Government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“The NSCIA believes that leadership is bestowed by God; it also believes that leadership is a trust, and this trust remains a burden on leaders, until they discharge it by delivering on the promises they made to the electorate.”

The NSCIA cited Islamic authority, Shaykh Abdullahi bn Foduye who said, “Verily, political power is a vicegerency from Allah and stewardship from God’s Apostle. How great then, its dignity and how heavy its burden.”

Accordingly, the NSCIA expressed its belief in the conviction that leaders should strive to deliver on their mandates and meet the expectations of the citizens, as much as possible, adding that the extent to which our presidential candidates

will receive the Nigerian Muslims’ support is proportional to their level of willingness to consider those issues important to the NSCIA.

The priority issues dear to the Muslim body, according to the statement, include security, economy, infrastructure, human capital development and good governance.

On security, it said “almost one and a half decade, Nigeria has been traumatised by an unprecedented level of carnage with losses of hundreds of thousands of human lives and millions of displaced peoples and a kidnapping industry that has caused havoc and pauperised both urban and rural communities.

“This growing and seemingly unending insecurity has crippled agriculture, commerce and education, with all the consequences in its trail. Assurances of successive governments have been to no avail.”

It said the failure has created a huge trust deficit between political leaders and citizens, particularly when experts have proposed various solutions to the authorities.

“The incoming president is

expected to make this his top priority and to deploy the highest political will and resources to bring this menace to a quick end.

“Some of the key lessons to note here include the dismantling of the war economy from which a few officials are feeding fat, the integrity of commanders, the absence of synergy between the different security services, building local trust for effective intelligence and working with local authorities who would know their terrain better than any outsider. Besides, the incoming government must curb the proliferation of small arms and light weapons.”

On the economy, the body said the incoming government is expected to reconstruct our economy, and to do so in ways that will address the grinding poverty, joblessness and severe inequities across the populace.

It said the frightening statistics of about 2/3 of the Nigerian population living below poverty line is not acceptable, and that agriculture as key economic driver to be prioritised.

It also decried the continued decay of infrastructure, especially the power sector, and expects the incoming government to restore power to this country which has groped in the dark for too long.

“We also need to have a sustainable energy plan that will unleash our natural resources while protecting the environment. Other critical areas of infrastructure include improving roads and rail, recharging the Lake Chad waters to boost agriculture, arresting desertification and boosting digital literacy,” it said.

In respect of Human Capital Development, it said it is critical to our economic recovery and the future of this country. “In global competitiveness, this is our area of comparative advantage as 65% of our population are under 35 years of age. At the moment, the records show that we have the largest out-of-school children in the world. Our girl-child enrolment presents another worrying statistics, with implications for our development. If we can educate this population and give them basic health care, they alone can be a powerful momentum in our economy.

“ Similarly, our health care, which is currently in a shambles, must be revamped to meet our growing population,” it said.

Regarding governance, it said that the service delivery of our governments at all levels is dismal. “We need an incoming government that will pay immediate and serious attention to this all-important issue.”

Navy warns miscreants to stay clear

The Nigerian Navy has assured Nigerians of total safety during the forthcoming 2023 general election while sending strong warning signals to miscreants to stay off the process as they will be dealt with without mercy if caught disrupting the process.

Gambo, who was represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans (CPPLans), Rear Admiral Saidu Garba noted that this 2023 first quarter march was specifically organized as a show of force to assure Nigerians that the armed forces of Nigeria and indeed the Nigerian Navy is ready to ensure that citizens of Nigeria go out and vote without any hindrance or

molestation.

He further said that the Nigeria Navy shall support police and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make sure any miscreant that is found disrupting the electoral process will be dealt with without any kind of mercy adding that the riot act has already been read to the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

He urged Lagos residents to avoid all forms of violence, arson and rioting, as sure were not the solutions to the difficulties and frustrations being presently experienced.

Nasarawa West: Wadada concludes wards campaign rallies, seeks peaceful elections

The Social Democratic Party Senatorial Candidate for Nasarawa West, Ahmed Wadada, has urged his supporters to conduct themselves peacefully before, during and after the upcoming general elections.

Wadada made the call on Saturday while concluding his campaign rally at Garaku Ward, Kokona Local Government area of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Wadada had gone round 59 Wards in five Local Government Areas of the Senatorial district too solicit the support of the electorate and blessings of Royal Fathers.

Violence not solution to Naira shortage difficulty – Sanwo-Olu

“Let me thank you, the good people of Lagos for your patience and unwavering perseverance even in these challenging times.

“My fellow Lagosians, this is a heartfelt call to you, as your Governor, to please remain calm at this time, and avoid all forms of violence, arson and rioting.

“Even in the face of the difficulties and frustrations being faced by all, violence and destruction should not and will never be the answer.

“We know that there are unscrupulous persons who want to sow seeds of violence and discord

by their very utterances and actions, all with the view of robbing you of the chance to cast your votes in the Feb. 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

“Do not allow them to use you to achieve their evil intentions,” the governor said.

According to him, there is no justification whatsoever for attacking public or private property.

He said that the law enforcement agents had received clear instructions to take full control and ensure zero tolerance for any and all acts of arson,

violence and destruction.

Sanwo-Olu enjoined all lawabiding residents to carry out their lawful activities without fear.

“As a government that fully understands the challenges that you are faced with, with regards to access to cash, we are working very hard to provide palliative measures to lessen the burdens being faced.

“As part of these measures, I have already approved an immediate reduction in transportation charges for publicowned transport, across the Lagos State public transport system: our

buses, ferries and taxis.

“We are also equally in discussion with private transport operators not to hike fares at this point of time, given the difficult circumstances in which many Lagosians find themselves.

FRSC@35: How we succeeded in traffic management -Kazzem

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has recorded tremendous achievements in the area of traffic engineering, road safety administration, traffic management, rescue operation, changing bad road use behaviour and crash reduction.

The Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) Bisi Kazeem, said this in a statement in Abuja.

Kazeem said that the road traffic management agency achieved the glorious feat, through a chain of pragmatic leadership.

This, he said, included sagacity of different generations of management, ingenuity of its policy formulators and the dexterity of the handlers of policy implementation.

According to him, these leaders have entrenched within the Corps, a wealthy culture of professionalism and excellence in service delivery.

“This is what has positioned it as the lead agency in road safety management and traffic administration.

“Also, with a passionate and

enduring commitment to creating a safer motoring environment that is unequalled in the African subregion.

“This unquenchable commitment asserts undue pressure on the Corps; thereby propelling it to more than ever before, continue to strengthen its strategies, programmes, knowledge and processes.

“This has enabled the agency to surmount all challenges militating against effective and efficient administration of safety in Nigeria,” he said.

Kazeem stressed that Nigeria was one of the few African countries that has leveraged on some road safety principles and have recorded remarkable progress in road safety administration and management despite a ‘gloomy’ beginning.

He said that the road safety situation in Nigeria was so deplorable that the World Health Organisation (WHO) once described the country as ‘worst in the world to travel on’ only next to Ethiopia.

He also said that the narrative

changed through government’s efforts by establishing FRSC as the lead agency to guarantee safety on every centimetre of Nigeria’s expansive road network of 204,000km.

“This establishment was done ten years prior to United Nations recommendation for all member states to establish agencies directly situated under the central government for ease of unfettered operation.

‘FRSC has brought down annual record of crashes from over 40,000 crashes per year to below 5,000 at the moment.

“This began on 18 February, 1988, when the Corps commenced full operational activities geared towards eradicating road traffic crashes,” he said.

The Spokesman said that the Corps was and would always remain the frontline agency in traffic regulations in Nigeria.

He emphasised that FRSC had grown to become a reference point in excellent service delivery in Nigeria; benchmark for road safety management and administration in Africa and an example of global

best practices in its operations.

This, he said, was through unprecedented innovations in information and communication technology and effective operational tools.

Kazeem commended the current leadership of FRSC, headed by Dauda Biu, for taking a bold steps towards the development of a vigorous framework for enhancing safe motoring environment in Nigeria.

He said that the strategic initiative had been the bedrock for the new innovations that have become ostensible in road safety administration and traffic Management in broad-spectrum.

“The laid foundation is premised on the resolve to place great attention to all the administrative variables that could enhance productivity, effectiveness and efficiency in the work process,” he said.

Kazeem assured the public that the Corps had put in place an unambiguous vision and mission projections designed to guide its affairs on short, medium and long term endeavours. (NAN)

Police arrest suspected female gun runner in Zamfara

The Zamfara Police Command has arrested a suspected female gunrunner for allegedly supplying arms and ammunition to bandits.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the command had also recovered 325 live ammunition of AK-47 riffles from her.

It had also succeeded in the arrest of other suspects for alleged possession of 1000 registered MTN Sim packs.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Mohammed Shehu disclosed this in a statement issued in Gusau.

Shehu said that the suspected gunrunner Fatima Sani, 35, was arrested following intelligence report over her alleged supply of arms and ammunition to bandits in the state from Lafia town in Nasarawa State.

He said: “On 13th Feb., Police detectives arrested the suspected female gunrunner in possession of 325 rounds of live ammunition.

“‘The arrest followed the intelligence information obtained about her movement with the said exhibit from Lafia in Nassarawa state to a notorious bandit’s kingpin operating in Zamfara forest.

“In the course of interrogation, the suspect confessed that she has been into the business.

“She further informed us that she had earlier supplied three AK 47 Rifles and 1000 rounds of AK-47 live ammunition to bandits operating in the state.”

The PPRO added that the woman, who was a native of Kaura-Namoda town in Zamfara would soon be arraigned in Court.

Shehu added: “On 15th Feb. Police received intelligence report that one suspect was seen with uncountable number of registered MTN sim cards.

“Police operatives swung into action, arrested the suspect and conducted an on-thespot search while the exibits of 1000 sim cards were recovered from him.

“In the course of investigation, the suspect confessed that the sim cards were for sale to customers,” Shehu said.

According to the spokesperson, the command had on Feb 12, command through its community policing engagement acted on intelligence information that led to arrest of some suspected kidnappers.

Shehu added that they were suspected to have been terrorising some parts of Kaduna, Kano and other neighbouring states for long.

He added: ‘”In the course of investigation, it was discovered that the suspects specialised in kidnapping business where unspecified number of people were abducted and collected millions of Naira as ransom.

“A member of the suspected syndicate, Thomas Ya’u confessed that he masterminded the kidnapping of his biological mother and three other victims.” (NAN)

Enugu APC guber: LPDC asked to probe its candidate alleged misconduct

There had been calls on the Legal Practitioner and Privileges Committee(LPDC) to speed up probe of allegation of professional misconduct and malicious use of court process against the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Enugu state, Barrister George Ogara and one other legal practitioner, Barrister Ejike Obumneme.

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP)in the state, Peter Mbah, had dragged the two lawyers before the LPDC, claiming that Barrister Obumneme filed a frivolous process against him, knowing fully well that it was false.

In a statement signed by Mr Lemmy Ughegbe, the Executive Director of MADI, called on LPDC to quicken it’s investigation into the allegation to protect the sanctity of the legal profession.

In the said petition, Mbah had accused Ogara of gross violation of the rules of professional conduct for legal practitioners, by supplying false information to mislead the court and malign him.

In a separate petition, Mbah also accused Obumneme of filing frivolous and malicious processes based on information which he clearly knew or reasonably ought to know to be false.

Mr Ughegbe said in the letter to LPDC, “After painstakingly studying the petition and all documents related thereof, Make A Difference Initiative is duty bound to call on the LPDC to take urgent steps to stop to investigate the claims of professional misconduct against Ogara and Obumneme in order to safeguard the sanctity of the temple of justice.

“Going by our own investigation of the facts of this case, we find compelling and persuasive grounds why Ogara and Obumneme have questions to answer for alleged professional misconduct

“For instance, Ejike Obumneme filed a suit in the Federal High Court Abuja on behalf of Felix Ugwu & Others in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/ CS/2257/2022, seeking a declaration that by the express provisions of Section 182(1) of the

Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), Dr. Peter Mbah, is ineligible to contest election to the office of Governor of Enugu State until after a period ten years from 7th day of July 2015.

“In the said suit, they alleged that Peter Mbah made a plea-bargain and a plea of guilty was entered on his behalf on July 7, 2015 in Charge No. FHC/L/09C/2007 supposedly preferred against him at the Federal High Court, hence he is an ex-convict.

“The plaintiffs further alleged that Justice M.N Yunusa of the Federal High Court found Peter Mbah guilty in the said Charge No. FHC/ L/09C/2007 and consequently pronounced sentence of forfeiture of assets on him.

“However, a Certified True Copy of court ruling obtained by our organisation, clearly shows that Peter Mbah did not undergo any trial in the first place, let alone enter into any plea-bargain, as he was discharged from the said suit about two years before the said plea-bargain of July 7, 2015.

“As officers in the temple of justice, Ogara and Obumneme are aware of these facts, but choose to peddle this falsehood and use the court processes in utter desecration of the temple and in breach of Rules 1, 15, 24, and 32 of the Rules of Professional Conduct 2007 of the Rules of Professional Conduct 2007.

“We are also persuaded that Ogara, being the deputy governorship candidate of the APC in the same election that Dr. Peter Mbah is the governorship candidate of the PDP deliberately orchestrated this to gain electoral advantage over Mbah.

“It is in the interest of the sanctity of our electoral process and the legal profession that both Ogara and Obumneme do not go scot-free if indeed they have breached the Rules and ethics of their profession.

“We therefore call on other patriots and lovers of democracy to prevail on the LPDC to quicken the adjudication of this matter.”

p. For Joint Venture/Partnership, Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) should be provided indicating among others the Lead Partner (CAC, Tax Clearance Certificate, Pension Clearance Certificate, ITF Compliance Certificate, NSITF Clearance Certificate, IRR & Sworn Affidavit are compulsory for each JV partner);

Mr Silas made the call at the weekend during a one day capacity building for media executives and Journalists in the state with the aim of creating awareness to the people on the significance of the census and to ensure a smooth conduct of the exercise across the state.

Elections: Obi has no political godfather, coalition tells Nigerians

Acoalition of Obidient groups on Saturday called on Nigerians to vote for a presidential candidate without political baggage ahead of the Feb. 25 elections.

Mr Marcel Ngobgehei, Head of Strategy and Operations, Obidient Global March, made the call on Saturday during a rally in Abuja.

Ngobgehei said that this was because the political atmosphere had been characterised with “moneybags” and godfatherism politics.

Keyamo recommends structural changes, more funding for NAN

Mr Festus Keyamo, spokesperson for All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Campaign (PCC) has recommended a structural change and more funding for the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to enhance its operations.

He said this on Sunday in Abuja at the agency’s news forum, adding that more funding was necessary to enable it perform more effectively.

Keyamo, also the Minister for State, Ministry of Labour and Employment said that in spite of obvious handicaps, including lack of funding that affected all government agencies, NAN had leaved up to its

billing.

He said the agency had been able to project Nigeria positively more than any other news platform, adding that it was in the same class with the BBC and VOA that were synonymous with some countries.

“The world sees Nigeria through the eyes of NAN and the agency has far more reach than we can imagine.

“That also, I think, is the mistake some of us in government make, they don’t know the reach of NAN.

“So for me, maybe we need some structural changes to improve the bureaucracy, or even remove it entirely from bureaucracy to make it more funtional and more effective.

“Imagine if we can give NAN more funding, more autonomy to perform more than it is doing now,” Keyamo said.

He thanked and praised those who had managed the agencies affairs over the years, saying that government was proud of them.

He added that NAN should be insulated from bureaucratic bottlenecks of core ministry and the strict bureaucratic civil service.

“NAN needs to be more independent and most have a direct funding, even if it was not first line charge.

“But it should have its own independent and direct funding, not

under the envelope of the general ministry, that is what I think should happen,” Keyamo said.

NAN was established on May 10, 1976, with the primary function of gathering, processing and distributing news about Nigeria to local and foreign news media.

The agency’s mandate was to present a complete, objective and impartial information, news or news material or features on any matter of public or national interest within and outside the federation.

The Management of the University of Calabar has announced the suspension of a 400-level student of the Department of Sociology, Miss Olunkanmi Oluwafoyin, over unruly behaviour at Campus.

Her suspension is contained in a press release signed by Mr Gabriel Egbe, Registrar of the institution, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Calabar.

Egbe said that the student was suspended for allegedly violating her matriculation oath through unruly behaviour and endangering lives and property on the university campus.

Egbe said that Oluwafoyin, with registration number 18/104143018, was reported to have, on Feb. 8, driven recklessly against traffic at high speed within the campus with some students hanging precariously on the doors and booth of her car.

The Registrar said that in the course of her action, a university security personnel suffered serious bodily harm and the campus was invaded on her behest by external parties.

“The alleged action was in flagrant disregard of an earlier warning as conveyed in a circular of Jan. 30.

“Consequently, management has suspended Miss Oluwafoyin’s studentship with effect from Feb. 8, pending the outcome of the matter which has been referred to the Students’ Disciplinary Committee for further investigation.

“Meanwhile, Miss Oluwafoyin is also to stay away from campus except on invitation by the Students’ Disciplinary Committee.

“The Dean of Social Sciences, Head, Department of Sociology and the Chief Security Officer are to ensure strict compliance with the directives,” he said. “Meanwhile, Miss Oluwafoyin is also to stay away from campus except on invitation by the Students’ Disciplinary Committee.

Alhaji Seidu Baba, a member of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), says the forum has not adopted former Vice-President, Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Presidential candidate, as consensus candidate.

Baba made the clarification on Saturday at a news conference in Abuja.

According to him, though,

Atiku has been scheming to be endorsed as the sole candidate of the North, NEF has not endorsed him.

He dismissed the claims that the NEF’s 10th Anniversary was to adopt Atiku as consensus candidate for the North, “Atiku has no credentials to be a sole Northern Presidential candidate”.

Baba said: “There was an

attempt to cajole and even force the NEF to adopt him (Atiku), shows how desperate he is.

“Many people believe, though the Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-rufai, was condemning Northern elders, it is believed, his real target was Atiku Abubakar.

“There is no way Atiku can be a Northern candidate, because he does not know them and we

do not know him.”

CAPPA urges governments to act on NIMET early warning on rainfall patterns

Following the recent weather forecast for 2023 released by Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET), the Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has called on relevant agencies of government at the national and state levels to invest in prevention and necessary infrastructure needed to address the root causes of flooding and the plight victims face.

The NIMET forecasts warned of massive variation in the onset of rainfall in most parts of the country and that as early as March, the coastal zone of the South-south states of Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom will observe unpleasant rainfall changes. Central states are likely to wait till May while Katsina,

Zamfara, Kano, Jigawa, Yobe, Cross River, Ebonyi, Imo, and Rivers will experience delayed onset of rainfall.

For Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Yobe and Borno the rains will not begin until June and July. Only Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Kwara Gombe, Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos will be near normal but with a worrisome quantity. NiMET added that the noticeable increase in climate change and humantriggered activities including indiscriminate dumping of wastes will cause more floods in 2023 and that the waters will come in high intensity within a short duration.

CAPPA opined that the 2022 floods which ravaged most states of the federation as well as the attendant loss of lives and the

economic toll put at over N4 trillion was an avoidable tragedy that must not happen again.

In a statement issued in Lagos, CAPPA said that the flood resulted in displacement, hunger, and scarcity hence the need for all hands to be on deck, especially the federal and state intervention agencies like the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and their state-level counterparts to work seamlessly in addressing conflicts of the past.

CAPPA Executive Director, Akinbode Oluwafemi said: “We must commend NIMET for the timely warning which should enable federal and state level planning to begin. We are however worried that nothing seems to have changed since the 2022 flood at federal and state level.

“The lackadaisical attitudes that led to the loss of lives and property are still with us even though the 2022 floods affected about 20 states, killed about 603 people, and rendered more than 1.3 million homeless while over 108,393 hectares of farmlands were destroyed with attendant effects on food security, the economy, health, security, and the environment and that affected Nigerians are still battling with”.

To forestall any repeat, CAPPA calls on Federal and sub-national Governments to respond to the early warning systems with synergy. In like manner, funds should be voted for the construction of buffer dams to accommodate excess water runoff upstream, particularly from the Lagdo dam in Cameroon.(NAN)

Benue Govt approves 243m for re-turfing of Aper Aku Stadium

Worried by the security risk involved in players of Lobi Stars travelling to Jos for their league matches, Benue State has approved the re-turfing of the Aper Aku Stadium to meet international standard.

The State government took the decision at an emergency executive council meeting held on Thursday at Government House, Makurdi.

The State Commissioner for Information Michael Inalegwu disclosed to newsmen that the sum of 243 million has been earmarked for renovation of playing turf at the stadium.

He said ,”We also agreed to give a face lift to other facilities and structures at the Aper Aku stadium. So, we had two way contractual obligations; one to Momimichelle Sporting Facitly Construction LTD which laid the astro turf and so was chosen because of their expertise. For the other renovation on the Stadium which will be done by direct labor, the sum of 65 million was approved to the Ministry of Youths/Sports. This is to cut cost. For complete renovation of the MarCarthy Stadium to make provision for offices of the club officials, accommodation for players, council approved 73 million. We are giving the contractors not less than two and half months to finish work on the playing turf. So, whatever is the case between now and April, the whole work should have been completed’, he said.

Restructuring has been politicised in Nigeria – Sani

Yabagi Sani, Presidential Candidate of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), says the issue of restructuring has long been addressed in Nigeria, describing the current clamour for restructuring as political.

Sani, also the National Chairman, Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), said this when he appeared at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum in Abuja.

“The issue of restructuring has long been settled, what we are having as call for restructuring is political, the Nigerian system is made in such a way that issues like that are addressed without causing dislocations or problems to the system.

“We have the National Assembly, we have organs like Revenue and Mobilisation

Commission which is responsible for fixing salaries and sharing of nation’s resources and to monitor the way they are being utilise.

“Restructuring is an already settled issue in Nigeria, these are issues that have either been settled through the constitution or conventions like the creation of the six geopolitical zones and others,” he said.

Sani added: “The creation of six geopolitical zones for instance is not in the Constitution but it is to address certain political realignment.

“When you go to the constitution we have issues on exclusive and concurrent lists, if the legislation feels that some

issues be taken from the exclusive list to the concurrent list and that it why I said that the issue of restructuring has long been settled.

“Your National Assembly members are just there to make that, you have elected representatives from all over the country in the two Chambers of the National Assembly as Senators and as members of House of Representatives.

“The lawmakers have just two functions- to make laws and to embark on oversight to ensure that the laws are working.

“The essence of oversight is to find out if these laws are working if they are not, then they have to rejig them and that is why I said restructuring is already impeded in

our constitution.”

He said the same thing could be applied to the current Naira redesign policy which had generally heated debates in the country.

“Look at the problem we are facing today about naira re-design, a well intentioned policy that is supposed to be applauded by all Nigerians. In fact it is stated in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) establishment act that it must change Nigeria’s currency every 10 years.

“But because the policy wasn’t well thought out or given necessary analysis in term of social implications it is rather causing untold hardship on Nigerians. This is what we are talking about,” he said.

In search of status quo

The noun phrase, ‘status quo,’ has gained traction in recent times. It has become a major bone of contention among political gladiators in Nigeria of late, especially in the wake of the February 8 ruling of the Supreme Court which asked both parties in the dispute over the new Naira denominations introduced by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, with the backing of President Muhammadu Buhari, to return to the status quo, pending determination of the substantive suit on February 15. Ever since then, there has been intense public debate as to what the status quo mentioned by the Supreme Court actually refers to.

Three states of Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara had on February 6, approached the Supreme Court to halt the implementation of the newly introduced N1, 000, N500, and N200 denominations of the currency by the CBN. On February 15 when the apex Court was to give a verdict, more states had filed to be joined in the suit either as plaintiffs or as defendants, which prompted the Supreme Court to defer judgment till February 22, just three days before commencement of the general election on February 25.

It has been some month when I was last in Abuja. But what assailed my eyes when I visited the Federal Capital last Monday was the pictures of the presidential candidates of the two leading parties and their running mates.

With the pictures are the slogans: “Reviving the people’s hope” (by the All Progressives Congress APC) or the ruling party in the country) and “Recovering the nation” (by the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, or the main opposition party in the country).

In other words, their status quo means a return to the new notes. This has been the bone of contention which has continuously pitched the FG against some states and their governors.

At our own end, we have been curious in locating the correct position of status quo in this context. We believe that the subject is not just tangential, but is inextricably interwoven, and integral to the core of the Supreme Court order. The opinions of legal experts can also be instrumental in locating the contextual status quo.

We hope that all parties in the dispute could come to a common understanding, and indeed agreement as to the correct position of the status quo meant by the Supreme Court. This will help to douse the tension, and address the growing confusion, and indeed conflict as to what the status quo in this matter truly is. We need to do this quickly to help our nation transit smoothly from one democratic governmnet to another. All eyes are on us as a political leader in our region.

I do not know about you, but I do know who gave us hope, and also who made it almost impossible to realise that hope into reality.

I also know who had said that “they would make the country ungovernable” if they didn’t win the 2015 Presidential election. They did not win the presidency, and the rest, as the saying goes, is ‘history’.

The wilful ungodly conduct of some people nearly killed the nation, which is why they want to bring it back to life.

The question begging for answer is: who is to trust between the one who wants to add to my hope and the one who wants to bring back the nation from the near-death they had left it.

Perhaps, they want to recover the nation so that they could kill it COMPLETELY?

Because, by the time they are thorough with their vengeance on some people and the rampage on the economy of the nation, not much will be left of the country.

Again, I do not know about you, but I do know that the one to choose between them.

BECAUSE, while the former attempts only to revive a hope that was, in the first place, not raised by him, the later will ONLY kill the country completely if they get the chance again.

Don’t tell me that he was not incharge of the country at the time I referred to, because he was, more or less.

His former boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo has alleged that his number two, and current PDP cadidate, Alhaji (although he once warned against calling him ‘Alhaji’) Atiku Abubakar, it was who persistently begged him to hand over ‘Bakassi Island’ to Cameroon.

Atiku had started public service in the Customs Service, where he retired as a very rich man, before he became Governor of his Adamawa State, before he even take over the rain of affairs in his state.

Of importance to us is his leaving Nigeria almost on its knees, but him as a Dollar Billionaire after Eight (8) years as a Vice President.

Another question begging for an answer is: where did all their money come from?

While we have earlier explained part of the source of Tinubu’s wealth, what we have not said was his claim of having invested in the American Apple Company, makers of the iPhone, among other products, while he was in that country.

This act in itself is enough to make one stupendously rich even without the benefit of inheritance.

As I was writing this piece, a friend of my Daily Trust days, who is unaware of my health challenge, called to ask for “any kind of assistance” from me.

I told him about the tragedy that befell me long before I was struck down by a stroke, although the complete story of my sojourn in the Katsina Government House is for another day.

Presidential election: Observed threats to Tinubus prospect

Barring unforeseen circumstances, Nigeria’s presidential election will hold on February 25, 2023. So, as the D-day nears us by the eyelids, we are akin to focus on the grand agenda of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in producing Nigeria’s next president and plausible threats to Bola Tinubu’s ultimate ambition in politics. Obviously, APC covets support from all the geo-political and ethno-religious divides, just like any other political party with a determination to coast home to victory in an election. But, as the popular saying goes, ‘charity begins at home’.

For Tinubu, the Southwest is his domicile political zone while the Yoruba nation is his ethno-religious base. With regard to the forthcoming election, one major problem thats likely to threaten the presidential prospect of the former governor of Lagos State is the divergence in the loci of power in the Yoruba nation. Sincerely, never in history has the Yoruba nation been divided about a cause thats supposed to be homogenous; a cause thats supposed to be a one-for-all agenda in structure and texture. Of a fact, Tinubu is not just representing the APC but also the Yoruba race! Nevertheless, the prevalence of multiple loci of power and influence centres such as ‘Afenifere‘ and ‘Igbimo Agba‘ Yoruba and ‘Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG)’, none of which is speaking with one voice, is a formidable problem; and the most noticeable of this vote-splitting catalyst is the Ayo Adebanjo version of antagonism. Only recently, Adebanjo did not only urge Nigerians not to vote for Tinubu but also made an assertion that the “Northerners wont vote for him“; which therefore means that the APC flag-bearer should go back to the drawing board.

Since politics is a game of number, if what the Afenifere leader is saying holds water, then genuinely, thats dangerous! Besides, if, indeed, the North wants to play a game with the South, then, the latter has actually played into the hands of the former because, once the North activates the non-negotiability motto of ‘One North, One People‘, then, that may affect the complexion of BATified. Unfortunately, the people back home, where Tinubu is supposed to garner bulk votes, are not speaking with one voice. If not well-managed therefore, this may be a terrible principality against a worthy dream. Without doubt, until theres a supervised census that comes with true figures, Nigeria will always have a long way to go!

The other threat has to do with the people currently

milking the resources of Nigeria with crass insensitivity. As we know, Tinubu is a guru when it comes to Public Finance; and he knows what to do to make Nigeria work! But let it be known that those who are currently sucking her blood will not want to give in so easily. No! They will stop at nothing, even if it involves bringing in external forces! Interestingly, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is in their hands; and they control the transportation system! Tragically, too, recent events have shown that a moving train can be stopped and its passengers kidnapped for ransom! Needless to repeat that the terrorism, banditry and others currently doubling Nigeria’s troubles may also not be unconnected with calculated attempts to ensure that things are not easy for Nigeria’s handlers. Indeed, thats how retrogressive Nigeria has become! Except one wants to be economical with the truth, respite is after the elections; and it depends on the outcome of the elections!

Another serious problem is yellow journalism, vis-àvis misinformation. If not competently controlled, this problem may not only be for the forthcoming elections but also the dismemberment of the Nigerian society. If not properly handled, it is a chaotic problem that may set the country ablaze. As things stand, the newspaper industry is ailing. Thus, it cannot afford to hire the best of hands to run its affairs. So, it compromises on almost everything. The social media have taken over but, unfortunately, their contents are not verifiable; and sources may not be determined in time. Impliedly, the menace of social media may decapitate the gains of democracy, if left unchecked.

The effectiveness of the security profile in Nigeria, before, during and after the elections, is also key; for it will determine everything! Again, that may threaten Tinubus prospect as Nigerias next president, if not well-managed! For instance, if a grenade is thrown in Kaduna, and another in Daura, the perpetrators may not need to come to Ijebu-Jesa, my Native Nazareth, before the message is taken. After all, the Bimodal Voter Authentication System (BVAS) cannot accredit a ghost town or an empty space! Once that happens, our brethren from the other side may come up with reprehensibly fictitious figures. And, if the BVAS reports are able to dance to the melodious tunes of Form EC8A, then, that will be the end of story!

The functional capacity of the country’s infrastructure is another major challenge. For example, should the national grid misbehave on the day of the election, thereby throwing the country into darkness, then, Nigeria will be a tale too horrible to tell!

A feast of fierce frustrations

To drag Nigeria out of the pit into which it has been put by generations of thieving leaders, Nigerians have no choice but to elect leaders who have previously shown that not all Nigerians are cut from the same soiled waistcloth of wanton avarice and corruption.

To live in a dysfunctional society is to die slowly as everything else malfunctions leaving one on the edge of despair.

In many ways and quite astoundingly, the Giant of Africa has become the poster child of the countries that are not working at the moment, and damningly do not look ready to work anytime soon.

Nigeria trudges into another election after the last cycle in 2019. Gratefully for a lot of people President Muhammadu Buhari and his army of apologists are about to drink from the trough of oblivion that has so gratefully given drink to other Nigeria presidents who failed to heed the lessons that the transience of power always offers.

But these last days of a presidency that promised so much but has put out so little appear to be the longest yet as spiraling crisis after spiraling crisis have formed the noose by which Nigeria appears set to hang.

Fuel queues have since returned especially in Abuja and Lagos, winding away like venomous snakes. As if that was not enough, a poorly planned naira redesign policy by the Central Bank have also left many disgruntled Nigerians besieging commercial banks in desperate bids to get cash. The scarcity of the new naira notes has since witnessed an uptick in conspiracy theories.

Many Nigerians have accused commercial banks of hoarding the new notes and selling them to politicians while others have simply blamed the Central Bank of Nigeria for its disastrous planning and policy. However what remains

even louder than the whispers of the conspiracy theorists and their theories are the very loud groans of Nigerians under a system seemingly fine-tuned to drive people to distraction.

It all seems to have a thing or two to do with vote buying. The Central Bank has said that the naira redesign was to preclude vote buying, terrorist financing among other things but an unprecedented level of hardship, has Nigerians questioning the extent to which the policy is in their interest.

The elections are just around the corner and the ripples from a futuristic process of undeniable importance are already upsetting many lives here. People are anxious, uncertain about a lot of things, and quite edgy. A thick pall of frustration has settled on the country as desperate families desperately try to navigate the hard times.

While the Supreme Court has ordered a temporary suspension of the ban on use of old notes, which suspension is set to expire soon, people remain wary of using it for transactions. The Central Bank of Nigeria has even been forced to acknowledge that the policy was poorly planned and implemented.

A lot of things in Nigeria have always been poorly planned. The country’s history is replete with problems that have come about as a result of poor planning. Successive Nigerian governments have shown a kind of cluelessness that does not conduce to proper planning. The net result is a country where nothing has really worked.

Nigerians are right to be frustrated with everything that has happened in the country in the last eight years and with everything that is happening even now. Nigerians do not deserve the frustration that silently but insistently gnaws away at their lives. Nigerians deserve a country that works. It is the least legacy they can bequeath to their unborn.

In the light of all these, the elections that are just around

One other important problem that the people dont take seriously is the measure of the political will of the powers-that-be to see the election through; and anyone who takes this important factor for granted may find himself or herself to blame. Talking seriously, it behooves the political will of the man in power to make sure that the election sails through. If he doesnt, no matter the pretence and/or the abracadabra in governance, nothing is secured! For instance, if, behind the scene, President Muhammadu Buhari refuses to hand over power, nothing can be done!

Lastly, that poverty is weaponized and greed is ubiquitously pervasive in Nigeria is no longer news! Therefore, public administration cannot but be problematic! For most people, politics is just to secure the means of livelihood, not to develop a neighbourhood, community or country. Thats why, by the time a man who goes into politics wearing a pair of bathroom slippers is given a N26 million car with other perks of political office to boot, he moves on! So, thousands of other guys are waiting for the next term, when they, too, will have to fight for public office.

According to a Yoruba adage, ‘Aja to yo kii ba aiyo sere! (A well-fed dog does not relate with a hungry one). Undeniably, poverty in Nigeria has created a pool of both the unemployed and the unemployable; and the hope of getting even “crumbs which fall from their masters’ table” can keep some people perpetually attached to the powersthat-be, whether they have steady incomes or not. Added to this is that politicians in this part of the world are the most difficult people to deal with. Why? They forget their associates and followers easily! This is demoralizing! Its also a disgrace! Therefore, since a hungry man is an angry man, a situation whereby politicians are being used and managed as factory workers shouldnt be encouraged. A factory worker holds allegiance to a particular factory, because thats where he or she works. He reports there, as directed; and gets paid for work done at the end of the month. The salary is meant to make him stay alive as well as maintain his or her family. On the contrary, a political foot soldier is a freelance worker without a root; which makes him or her very fragile and dangerous, because he or she switches allegiance at the slightest provocation! May the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world, grant us peace in Nigeria!

the corner offers an incredible opportunity to Nigerians to put into office people who will offer the country the brightest chances of making something out of its prodigious potentials.

Nigerians should elect only leaders that have shown by their antecedents that they can remain relatively unblemished in a country swarming with corruption.

To drag Nigeria out of the pit into which it has been put by generations of thieving leaders, Nigerians have no choice but to elect leaders who have previously shown that not all Nigerians are cut from the same soiled waistcloth of wanton avarice and corruption.

To get their heads in the right places and to guarantee the best possible future for their children, access to quality education will be key for Nigerians. To guarantee unfettered access to quality education, Nigerians must choose only leaders that know the profoundly alchemical power of accessible and affordable quality education because they have some themselves. Consequently, all those who peddle dubious academic credentials must be roundly rejected.

It remains a tragedy of national proportions that even among Nigerians who have been sold for nothing in the last eight years there remain those who would rather their chains remain. These people who are unfortunately many want an entire country to remain in chains and in a land of deep darkness simply because their chains guarantee that they can feed on scraps from their masters’ table.

It is not clear that all Nigerians realize it. But on February 25,2023 when Nigerians will go to the polls to elect the man who would be president of the country for the next eight years, an indescribably important lot will be cast over the future of the country. The way the lot falls will determine whether a beleaguered country breaks up or begins to escape its woes.

Nigeria’s mental health conundrum and the way forward

Noticeably, Russians are extremely slow in undertaking various development projects across Africa and this policy approach documented in the “Situation Analytical Report: Russia and Africa” was publicly presented in November 2021. Russia has, long ago, developed deep interest in building a naval base and related military facility in the Republic of Sudan due to its geostrategic location – in the Mediterranean Sea. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s meeting with Sudanese officials during his February visit to the Northeast African country was not, apparently the first when first time this question on establishing the naval base in Sudan.

Western countries are concerned about Russia’s widening sway in Africa’s Sahel and its border regions. Sudan’s ruling military council has previously considered allowing Russia to open a naval base on the Red Sea coast, a strategic region where Gulf countries and Turkey also vie for influence. Lavrov acknowledged the existence of Russian mining companies operating in Sudan and said that agreement had been reached previously on a naval base but was awaiting Sudanese legislation to implement it. Such a deal had been reached under Omar al-Bashir, who was toppled in a 2019 uprising.

Before his overthrow, Omar al-Bashir made one more trip to Moscow in November 2017. During this official working visit, agreements were reached on Russia’s assistance in modernizing the Sudanese armed forces. Khartoum also said at the time that it was interested in discussing the issue of using Red Sea bases with Moscow. That proposal drove Moscow into signing a document, after several discussions and negotiations, the possibility of constructing a naval base in the region, along the Red Sea and in the Indian Ocean.

The Mediterranean Sea is a junction of three continents and bordered by a great diversity of countries and cultures. Further tracking down from the Maghreb coastline to Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia, there are many competing interests within EU countries, notably between France and Germany, and in the Arab world. Nevertheless, Russia presents itself the right reliable strategic partner for building a foreign naval base, and control that sea route.

According to the executive order, the published document says “an agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Sudan on creating a facility of the Navy of the Russian Federation in the territory of the Republic of Sudan be adopted” and further authorizes “the Defense Ministry of Russia to sign the aforementioned agreement on behalf of the Russian Federation.”

The document stipulates that a maximum of four warships may stay at the naval logistics base, including “naval ships with the nuclear propulsion system on condition of observing nuclear and environmental safety norms.”

According the Kremlin website, that document submitted by Russia’s Defense Ministry, approved by the Foreign Ministry, the Supreme Court, the Prosecutor General’s Office, the Investigative Committee of Russia and the Russian Cabinet. As the document says, the Russian Navy’s logistics facility in Sudan “meets the goals of maintaining peace and stability in the region, is defensive and is not aimed against other countries.”

Foreign Minister of Sudan Mariam Al-Sadiq Al-Mahdi following talks in Moscow together with Lavrov, agreed to the ratification of the document by both the State Duma of the Russian Federation and Parliament of Sudan. Thereafter on July 1, President of Russia Vladimir Putin submitted an agreement on building a Russian naval station in Sudan for ratification by the State Duma. Earlier, Sudan announced its decision to revise the 25-year agreement that was first brokered by its ousted leader Omar al-Bashir during a meeting with Vladimir Putin in 2017 to establish a Russian naval base in Port Sudan, on Sudan’s Red Sea coast.

After the 2017 meeting, the project did not take up immediately though. But it signified that Russia would make one huge stride by establishing a naval facility in Sudan. It was expected to distinctively mark its maritime security presence in the Mediterranean and the Red Sea region. Sharing a northern border with Egypt, Sudan is located on the same strategic coastline along the Red Sea. Experts interviewed told me that Russia needs both Sudan (Northeast Africa) and Egypt (conduit to Maghreb) to have unshakable influence in the region.

During the first Russia-Africa summit held in Sochi 2019, President Vladimir Putin held business discussions with Chairman of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman al-Burhan. Putin where both noted that “Sudan is certainly one of our long-standing reliable partners” – referring to those previous years of Omar Al-Bashir.

With the internal political processes are taking place there, Putin said “the signing of the constitutional declaration, the formation of the Sovereignty Council and the establishment of a transitional government to be the first steps aimed at getting the country on the path of sustainable development. Many tasks still lie ahead. We intend to continue rendering all necessary aid and support for the normalization of the situation.”

Abdel Fattah Burhan replied: “Our relations have a long history: 60 years ago they began to develop, and you have always supported Sudan, always stood by Sudan, and we always know that Russia stands together with countries that fight for their rights, for justice. We would like to tell you that the changes in Sudan are positive. They are happening in a successful and positive way. Today armed forces and coalition forces play an important role in these events, and they want to build the future of Sudan.”

He added: “As you have already mentioned in your speech, our relations are developing, and these bilateral relations are based on several agreements. We hope that we will sign new documents and cooperation agreements, and you will help us, in particular, to build up our armed forces,” the Sudanese leader said, and concluded “We have much common ground, such as, investment cooperation. We also cooperate at international forums, and

share common positions on many international problems.”

Now the key necessary condition for implementing the military naval base, as shown in official discussions and reported on the ministry’s website, is a transition from military to civilian power in Sudan. Russia has to wait for Sudan’s legislative approval for a planned naval base on the Red Sea. The agreement already signed needs ratification. And the ratification will be made only after the formation of a civilian government and a legislative body.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also said this at his joint media conference “the deal still needs ratification by Sudan’s yet-to-be-formed legislative body” – an indication that there has to be a well-constituted civil body. Sudan has been without a parliament since a popular uprising forced the military overthrow of longtime autocrat Omar al-Bashir in April 2019. The country has been mired in political chaos since an October 2021 military coup derailed its short-lived transition to democracy.

In February last year, Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, commander of the powerful paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, held talks with senior Russian officials in Moscow. Upon his return from the week-long trip, Dagalo said his country didn’t have objections to Russia or any other country establishing a base on its territory as it poses no threat to Sudan’s national security.

“As a first step if any country wants to open a base and it is in our interests and doesn’t threaten our national security, we have no problem in dealing with anyone, Russian or otherwise,” Gen. Mohammed Dagalo explained that year in Khartoum.

Chairman of the Sovereignty Council of Sudan Abdel Fattah Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has suspended a number of provisions of the constitutional declaration, which sets the frames of the interim period after toppling of President Omar al-Bashir, who had ruled the country for 30 years, and determines relations between the military and civilian authorities, but sternly promised that next political elections planned for July 2023.

Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, however, sets the primary task to resolve the stalemate between political forces and the army, reshape the declaration towards the transition to the civilian government and political elections. It remains if the interim military administration would ever deliver on its promise to the people and the world.

The African Union (the continental organization) and the Maghreb and East African Community (EAC) have been highly concern that Sudan returns to civilian democratic-elected government. This position has largely been unacceptable for Sudan’s military government and even Russian authorities. Russians interpret any talks over democracy as “direct interference” into internal affairs of the African country.

Throughout all his speeches during his visit to Sudan, Lavrov repeatedly said Russia favors “non-interference” in Sudan’s internal affairs and accused the United States and Europe of adopting colonial approach and methods in Africa. In addition, Russian Special Presidential Envoy for the Middle East Mikhail Bogdanov and Ministry’s Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, unreservedly considered as “unacceptable” the foreign intervention in Sudan’s and Africa’s internal affairs, consistently demonizing principles of modern democracy.

The new Naira Redesign Scarcity Will Bring Benefit Soon initiative is aimed at reducing the huge deficit cost which has been a hindrance to Nigeria’s dream. Digital payments, vote buying, and cash withdrawal are some of the activities that will be greatly impacted by the introduction of new currency notes.

The recent Naira redesign scarcity has created tension in the Nigerian financial sector. The apex bank, Central Bank of Nigeria, has announced that commercial banks have not been able to supply enough currency notes to meet the demands of major sales outlets. The federal government is also trying to limit the old notes being circulated and replace them with new #200, #500 and #1000 currency notes. This scarcity of paper money is causing tension among Nigerians as they worry about not having enough currency for their daily needs. However, it is expected that soon this shortage would bring benefit as it will help in curbing inflation and controlling illegal activities related to money laundering which are common among the population due to lack of strict regulations from Federal government and commercial banks.

The CBN has set a deadline to replace all old currency notes with redesigned currency. This redesign will help in reducing the circulation of large cash withdrawals and encouraging digital payments as well as daily transactions. This is expected to benefit many Nigerians who are currently dealing with poor circulation of money in the market due to scarcity. The new

Wife of Kebbi Governor, Dr Zainab Bagudu has called for improved funding of education in the country to boost national development.

Bagudu spoke at an interactive session with Journalists in Abuja on her eight-year stewardship from 2015 to date.

She said: ”There is really a need for more money for education. It should be accorded the topmost priority.

”Every sector needs more funding, but education needs it more. It is the mother of all sectors. Education effects all sectors.”

The wife of the Kebbi Governor further specifically spoke of the need to educate the girl-child and empower the Nigerian woman.

She added, ”when you educate the girl-child, you educate the society and the girl-child is therefore very crucial in the society.

Bagudu also disclosed that she would return to the clinic at the end of their tenure on May 29, 2023.

NOA, CSOs advocate counter-narratives to end insurgency

The Director-General, National Orientation Agency (NOA), Dr Garba Abari, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and other stakeholders, have advocated intensified efforts on counter narratives to end violent extremism in Nigeria.

They made the call at the inauguration of “Time to tell the Truth Campaign” by Truth Alliance, a coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs) and critical stakeholders in Northeast Nigeria and in Niger Republic, on Wednesday in Abuja.

Abari said the issue of violent extremism had taken a toll on Nigeria’s landscape in so many forms like social, economic, and political dislocations which he said had become of great concern not only to Nigeria but across the entire West African region.

He said that violent extremism activated by the Boko Haram and Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) had also become part of a global terrorist franchise.

According to him, to actually beginning to tell the truth in addition to what has been done by the government, civil society and donor agencies are to have a deeper interrogation of the processes leading up to what we are seeing today.

Abari said the Borno Model of the state government had in recent time attracted a large turn out of the repentant Boko Haram terrorists in their thousands who had surrendered.

He said the Federal Government had also developed a home grown response to reducing the fighting capacity of Boko Haram under the Operation Safe Corridor as a direct policy response to get them out, deradicalise them.

He said the inauguration was an attempt to interrogate how far

the efforts had reduced the fighting ability of those elements that had taken arms against the states.

“We in NOA have a sense that we must actually begin to complement the efforts of what the Neen Foundation and Truth Alliance are doing to get community buy in.

“This is because, it is important that to deradicalise, reintegrate or integrate as the case may be, it must be community driven, because the community is essentially the very first recipient of the devastation of

this.

“How do we strike the very delicate balance between the feeling of the victim and that of the perpetrator? Because this is a very hot potato in the hand of Government, the donor agencies and peace building institutions.

“Boko Haram is an ideologically driven rebellion against the state and what we in the National Orientation Agency have just have discovered is counter narrative and this is one thing that neither government nor all was involved in

countering violent extremism.

“Dealing with terror groups have succeeded over the years but alternative narrative is one area that we need to emphasise and develop more competencies and the capacity around it,” he said.

The Federal Commissioner, National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, Imam Sulaiman-Ibrahim, said that violence, extremists, had perpetrated mass atrocities, internal displacement and refugees.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim, who was represented by his Chief of Staff. Ms Grace Ukpong, said that the commission’s responsibility was to protect and assist victims of violence, especially the IDPs and refugees.

He said that while millions of people had been affected by insurgency, the discourse around the imperceptible, invisible harm that extremism had inflicted on communities, societies and and countries was still underestimated.

Rotary Club tasks Abuja community leaders on peace initiatives

The Rotary Club of Abuja Imperial, has urged community leaders to convey the message of peaceful coexistence among their followers irrespective of religion, political affiliation and cultural differences.

Mr Adedotun Amori, Charter President, Rotary Club of Abuja Imperial, made the call at a oneday community dialogue on sustainable peace building and conflict prevention on Saturday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the dialogue session is focused on sensitising community leaders on the imperatives of peace before, during and after the 2023 general elections.

Amori said that peace is critical in the development of every society, adding that the essence of this dialogue was to educate people to eschew violence and embrace peace always.

“As part of Rotary’s cardinal area of focus, we decided to bring the message of peace building and conflict prevention to the people of Kadokuchi.

“We have had the opportunity to

speak with the community leaders on effective communication in resolving conflicts, practical and easy ways to promote peace in our communities and ensure conflict prevention.

“We have also discussed with them on the essence of security as we approach the next general elections and the need to uphold effective leadership qualities as necessary tools towards building sustainable peace in our communities,’’ Amori said.

Earlier, the resource persons emphasised the need for the community leaders to promote actions and ideas that would entrench peace in their various communities.

Ms Bukola Shaba, a communication expert, urged them to use effective communication as a tool for conflict prevention and resolution in their communities.

Shaba encouraged them to demonstrate love in handling situations within their families and members of their communities.

Mr Babayemi Olaniyan, Lead Partner, Lehi Attorneys, in his presentation titled “Practical Ways of Promoting Peace in the

Community’’ urged the community leaders to always appreciate individual differences among their subjects.

Olaniyan said it was important for them to understand individual differences as people interpret things differently.

“There are intra personal conflicts and inter personal conflicts and once you are able to understand these conflict areas you will be able to understand people.

“Like the onion model, the onion has different layers; once you keep on peeling off the external parts you gradually get to the inside of the onion and that is how human beings are.

“You see them from the outside and they give you a different perception of who they are but if you check deep you see the kind of persons they are, their desires and their fears.

“And once you understand that about human beings you will be able to prevent conflict.

“As community leaders they are constantly engaging with community members so the best way to prevent conflict is to

understand who they are dealing with.

“Once they understand who they are dealing with it helps them manage issues better,’’ he said.

Dr Funmilayo Oyefusi, urged the community leaders to explore effective communication process to promote peace in their various communities.

She urged them to always embrace dialogue, noting that mutual respect is critical in ensuring sustainable peace and conflict prevention.

Oyefusi urged them to demonstrate confidence, integrity and ability to influence others.

She tasked them to show determination towards peace, be socially friendly and initiate pro-active measures to forestall negative occurences.

On his part, Dr Olukayode Obayomi urged the community leaders to promote the security of their communities, particularly during the elections.

Obayomi urged them to ensure social and personal peace among themselves that would promote peace in their families and the society at large.(NAN)

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) Senatorial candidate for Nasarawa West, Ahmed Aliyu Wadada, has urged his supporters to conduct themselves peacefully before, during and after the upcoming general elections.

Wadada made the call weekend while concluding his campaign rally at Garaku Ward, Kokona Local Government area of the state.

Wadada had gone round 59 Wards in five Local Government Areas of the Senatorial district to solicit the support of the electorate and blessings of royal fathers.

The senatorial flag bearer enjoined the electorate to be decisive, think about the current reality and reflect on the dynamics of time, while exercising their civic responsibility on the day of the election.

Chief of Staff to Kogi State Governor, Muhammed Jamiu Asuku, at the weekend revealed that he joined the Kogi State governorship contest over his passion and determination to consolidate on the infrastructural and development achievements of incumbent Governor Yahaya Bello. Fielding questions from journàlists at the national Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja after picking his expression of interest and nomination form of fifty million naira, Asuku said Bello’s administration has recorded tremendous progress in the State, hence he needs a successor who has the capacity to sustain and consolidate.

He said Governor Bello in his administration, empowered young leaders that will continue from where he will stop in the provision of good governance that will benefit the people of the State.

said the forthcoming election is an opportunity for women to take control again, so as to build the nation and the families.

“From the town hall meetings we had, I discovered that when

we wanted to go for rallies, they (women) would insist they want to have women meetings and it had been successful.

“My husband has not contested an election since 2003. This year, it will be 20 years, so he did not just wake up and say it is my turn. If you can serve other people for 20 years and make sure they excel. I do not believe you cannot excel in your own place.

“The Bible said, when you build, you should inhabit, when

you sow, you should be the first person to reap. It depends on how long you have invested.

Presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi has said a review of his campaign experiences across the country has reassured him of victory, even as he described his encounter as awesome and inspiring.

Exchanging views with some journalists after the exhaustive state-by-state rally, Obi said that more than ever before, the resolve to lead the take-back Nigeria movement has far strengthened him than before he and Datti embarked on the campaign.

“From one state to the other, we saw a people fatigued by failed governance but looking very eager and willing to see a new Nigeria”, the Presidential candidate declared.

Obi said that rather than feeling fatigued and exhausted, the rally has reenergized them and has become a propelling catalyst for Datti and me because Nigerians of all tribes, religions, regions, classes, and sex are unanimous in their desire for a real change and a new Nigeria.

His words: “The love shown to me and Datti in all the places we went has energized us into wanting to render all to rescue this country. We saw poverty which shouldn’t be for a naturally endowed nation like ours, we saw people denied compassion by their leaders.

Naira redesign: El-Rufai, APC Governors desperate to buy votes in 2023 - CNPP

Conference Of Nigeria Political Parties (CNPP) has called on Nigerians not to fall for ‘antics’ of the Governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying they are not fighting for the wellbeing of the people.

CNPP, in a statement issued yesterday by the National Secretary, Willy Ezeugwu, said “opposing APC leaders are attacking President Muhammadu Buhari and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele because they are desperate to buy votes knowing that APC has failed.”

Asking President Buhari to call Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State to order “for declaring Kaduna State a sovereign by ordering the residents to

continue to recognise old N500 and N1,000 banknotes as legal tender contrary to presidential directives”.

CNPP therefore urged Nigerians in Kaduna and elsewhere to ignore Governor El-Rufai for their own good, as only CBN can issue directives on legal tender in Nigeria on behalf of the President.

It also reiterated its call on the CBN to set up modalities for swapping old Naira notes for the Nigerian masses who may have been deceived by the APC Governors to keep their cash until the expiration of the naira swap deadline.

The CNPP noted that the presidential directive on temporary recirculation of old 200 naira notes as legal tender until April 10 was commendable in view of the obvious sabotage of the distribution of the

redesigned naira notes by unpatriotic politicians conniving with commercial banks.

“Unpatriotic politicians who cannot win elections without vote buying are bent on stockpiling the new naira notes in their desperation to rig the 2023 general elections. This is the real reason for the cash crunch in Nigeria.

“For us, President Muhammadu Buhari would be declared a 2023 hero of democracy, and his administration’s many failures forgiven, if he sees through a free, fair, and credible 2023 general elections.

“We urge Nigerians not to allow themselves to be deceived by the APC Governors who never took the Federal Government to court over police brutality (which culminated in the #EndSARS protests).

“Nigerians have experienced uncountable lose of lives and property as a result of insecurity, the pains of the perennial fuel scarcity and many other failed policies of the APC-led federal government but the APC Governors never made a statement but they were quick to drag the federal government to the Supreme Court for implementing its own cashless policy because of obvious vote buying agenda of the party.

“The CNPP will continue to stand on the side of the masses on the naira redesign policy which is part of Nigeria’s cashless policy implementation because of the overall benefits of the policy in the long run. A stable economy and better life for the average Nigerian in the future is worth the sacrifices and the temporary pains.

Speaking further, the ANA Convener said Tinubu’s administration provided the Lekki corridor as a fast-growing real estate, making it one of the wonders of urban renewal that has become a model in Nigeria by producing 500 units of houses yearly.

“Under him, as Governor of Lagos State he pioneered the development of modern water transportation and BRT. The independent power project was a trail blazing endeavor that contributed

270 megawatts into the national grid.

Speaking against other aspirants whom he accused of swinging from one party to the other, MoAllahyidi said his opponents swing with the tide; drifting as the current takes them. “If it is rosy today in one party you find them there, as soon as it becomes hot, they leave and nest in the next area of comfort”, he said.

He said though ANA is an apolitical association, it chose to support the APC candidate because of its conviction that Tinubu is on record as a person who sees service as a call to duty, by delegating to and trusting persons around him with responsibilities that enables them grow, strengthen internal capacities to become assets to the nation.

National Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Adamu, yesterday held a marathon meeting with Governors of the party, where he appealed to them on the need to accept and corporate with President Muhammadu Buhari over the cashless and naira redesign policy.

According to Adamu, who spoke before the meeting went into closed session, he summoned the APC Governors to have an objective interaction with them, with a view to understanding where and how things stand, regarding the cashless and naira redesign policy.

“You will recall the recent developments that have necessitated the need for this invitation. We do not want to sit in judgment of anybody in regard to where we are today in the country as it affects our great party.

“I thought the best thing to do is to get all those who are holding forth in their respective positions and who were elected on the platform of the party to get together and have some interaction so that we can have a better understanding of what situation we are in.

“That is the essence of this invitation. And it is my pleasure to welcome you most sincerely to this interaction”, Adamu said.

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), in Kano, has threatened to withdraw its support for a peace accord earlier signed in the state because of an alleged plot by police and the state government to intimidate candidates of the party.

Bichi who spoke alongside all NNPP senatorial candidates and gubernatorial candidate, Abba Gida Gida, alleged that the Kano Commissioner of Police, Mamman Dauda, in collaboration with the state government, is working to create a crisis that may cause the postponement of elections in Kano.

He further claimed that they have evidence of a composed list of NNPP members to be arrested by the Kano State Police Command.

Bichi, on behalf of all the NNPP stalwarts, called on the Inspector General of Police to, with immediate effect, redeploy the commissioner of police for peace to reign in Kano during and after the elections.

Due to the current situation in Kano, NNPP, according to him, is planning to withdraw its signature from the peace accord that has already been signed.

Bichi appealed to all the security agencies to monitor the situation in kano with care, stressing that NNPP is planning a peaceful protest in all the 44 LGAs in the state so that people will know the real situation on ground.

“We will soon release the names of those the police are planning to arrest, and we have reliable information that that list was [put] together by local government chairmen,” said Bichi who also accused the Kano Police Command of refusing to enforce court orders on some politicians.

The Auditor General of Kogi State Local Governments, Ahmed Usman Ododo has joined the race to succeed the incumbent Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, even as he said the governor made it possible for common people to become relevant today in the State.

Speaking with journàlists weekend after he obtained his fifty million naira expression of interest and nomination forms at the APC National Secretariat, Ododo said since Bello came into the leadership of the state in 2016, he has crashed

the tribal division among the three tribes in the State, hence he wants to sustain such legacies.

“Before he came in 2016, an Igala man does not see an Ebira or Okun man as his brother, it was a case where we relate based on tribe, religion and social class but today we see ourselves as Kogites. And if I emerge as the candidate of the party, I will continue in the same manner.

“I’m going to consolidate the infrastructural development to ensure that I improve what he has put on the ground. On the issue of the blueprint, GYB has put in place a 32 years development plan that I

am fully a part of, I will continue it and if I have any new ideas, I will add them to make sure we deliver development to the people of Kogi state.

He said as an auditor, he will continue on revenue drive and ensure he blocks the leakages, while exploring new avenues to increase the revenue of the state.

“I tried in 1999 to contest for councillor because I don’t know anybody, but today, GYB has made it possible for everyone. More than 90% of people here are cardcarrying members of our great party APC, which means that we are qualified to even contest the

post of president.

Also speaking to journàlists after paying for his forms, another aspirant, Salami Momodu Ozigi Deedat, said “My vision is to sustain the giant strides of his Excellency and consolidate it. What is consolidation, to expand his achievements and having that, we would have provided leadership for our dear state.

“We have a house of assembly, representatives and senators and governors from our state, but we need a leader whom his excellency will provide. You will agree with me that this is lacking in Kogi state all this while.

“I’m a practical politician who believes in the will of God. Whoever emerges, whether by election or the decision of our leader, will be acceptable and we will work gladly, actively and assiduously with him to win. Our primary aim is to ensure that our governor chooses his successor. Whoever emerges will work to sustain his legacies and add to them.”

Meanwhile, he said Governor Bello is his godfather, because he appointed him to become a Commisioner in Kogi State, adding that Bello is more of a mentor than a godfather in Kogi politics.

CAC asks business owners to comply with registration processes to avoid being ‘deleted’

The Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) says applications yet to be processed for more than 2 months will be tagged ‘abandoned’ and deleted.

In a statement on Friday, the commission many applications have been abandoned, creating a burden on its database.

It urged applicants who have their files abandoned to have them resolved or present queries on the registration portal.

“It has been observed that a sizeable number of applications have been filed and abandoned on the CRP (companies registration portal) as a result of queries that have not been resolved,” the statement reads.

“This is creating a burden on our database. Moreso, there is no certainty as to when applicants will comply to enable the process to continue.

“In view of the above, all applications that have stayed up to 2 months on the CRP without action from the presenter or applicant shall be deemed abandoned and would be deleted from the system.

“In the same vein, going forward, any application for registration that has been queried and is not attended to by the presenter will be deleted from the system at the expiration of 2 months from the date of the query.

“The general public and our esteemed customers are therefore advised to resolve all outstanding queries on applications that have been abandoned on the CRP on or before April 14, 2023.”

Capital market developing products to attract youths -SEC DG

The capital market is working to develop products that would make the market attractive to the younger generation in a bid to further deepen the market.

Director General of the Securities and Exchange Commission, Mr. Lamido Yuguda stated this in an interview weekend.

Yuguda who was represented by the Head, Office of the Chief Economist of the SEC, Dr. Okey Umeano, stated that this is one of the provisions made in the revised capital market plan in a bid to make further products available to the populace.

“I must tell you that the demographic in our market

is graying and it is a source of worry. That is one of the things we are covering in the Revised Capital market master plan. We are encouraging Capital Market operators to develop technology. The youths do not want to come in and start filling five page forms because they want to access the market, they want to pick their phones and make their investments.

“That is why we are improving our Know Your Customers;we are improving so many things to make it easier for them. That is why we are introducing these Fintechs. We are allowing these Fintechs to come because we see the Fintech as an important gateway for youths to enter the market. We are conscious of that and we are working towards it.

Yuguda said that the youths

“We have about 6 commodities exchanges and we are doing a lot to bring them up to standard. We cannot say that we want to grow the

agricultural part of our economy if we do not have a market to support it and that is what we are doing. That market is growing in leaps and bounds, so that is another achievement.

“We are beginning to see some results of these our efforts in that area. Before now, when we did not have this market, farmers were not able to get good price discovery for their products. Therefore, if you have a good commodities exchange, it helps price discovery and it helps credit to flow to the farmers.

Umeano stated that because there is good price discovery, people can now ascertain what they can get if they farm a particular produce within a particular period. That is what the value chain that commodities segment of the market is opening up.

The Kaduna state government has directed its ministries, departments and agencies to ensure revenue collection agents accept payments made in old and new notes.

The order was contained in a statement on Sunday, signed by Muyiwa Adekeye, special adviser to the governor on media and communication.

The state government said the directive was in line with the subsisting order of the supreme court.

“In line with the subsisting order of the supreme court, the Kaduna state government has directed its ministries, departments and agencies to ensure that their collection agents continue to accept payments made in all denominations of the naira, old and new,” the statement reads.

“The laws of Kaduna state do not allow personnel of government agencies to be involved in cash collection of revenues.

“The collection agents authorised by the state government agencies do offer citizens a route for cash payment, and are expected to comply with the subsisting court order.”

President Muhammadu Buhari had announced the extension of the validity of the old N200 notes till April 10.

Buhari, in a televised nationwide address on Thursday, said all existing old N1000 and N500 have ceased to be legal tender, but noted that the denomination remain redeemable at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and designated points.

This came less than 24 hours after the supreme court insisted that the old notes were still valid, and adjourned the case filed by several states — including Kaduna — challenging the deadline on the old notes till February 22.

In a counter directive following the president’s national broadcast, Nasir el-Rufai, governor of Kaduna, said all the old and new notes remain legal tender in the state pending the supreme court’s decision.

Meanwhile, the CBN has commenced the collection of the old naira notes as ordered by Buhari.

Shell: Bonga floating production storage hits 1bn barrels of oil export mark

Bonga, Nigeria’s first deepwater exploration and production vessel, has hit a one-billion-barrel oil export mark.

Abimbola Essien-Nelson, media relations manager at Shell, said in a statement that the facility achieved the milestone on Monday.

She said the feat was achieved three months after a major turnaround maintenance (TAM) of the facility was completed ahead of schedule.

Essien-Nelson, quoted Elohor Aiboni, managing director, Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (SNEPCo), as saying the milestone was a celebration of excellence, leadership and focused delivery that has brought significant benefits to Nigeria and its citizens.

“One billion barrels is an exciting milestone,” Aiboni said.

“I’m incredibly proud of all of our employees and contractors who have contributed to the success of the Bonga FPSO and the attainment of this remarkable achievement.”

Aiboni also said the integrated delivery approach, continuous improvement and the support lever offered by the technological prowess of the Shell Group are the pillars of SNEPCo’s excellence delivery.

“We are building a leading safe, simpler and costdisciplined deepwater business that brings value to our partners, shareholders and Nigeria which remains a heartland for Shell,” she added.

Aiboni also attributed the success of Bonga to the supportive partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited and SNEPCo’s co-venturers — TotalEnergies Exploration and Production (E&P) Nigeria

Limited, Nigerian Agip Oil Company, and Esso Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited.

Also speaking on the feat, Osagie Okunbor, country chair, Shell Companies in Nigeria, also commended the resilience, focus and dedication of the entire SNEPCo team — most of whom are Nigerians.

“I feel a strong sense of pride knowing that today, over 95 percent of SNEPCo staff, including those working on the Bonga FPSO, are trained Nigerian deepwater professionals, who daily contribute their quota, in the development of Nigeria’s deepwater hydrocarbon resources,” he said.

“The entire team should be incredibly proud of themselves.”

Bonga, a floating production, storage, and off-loading (FPSO) vessel has a capacity to produce 225,000 barrels per day.

It began operations in 2005

and is anchored 120 kilometers offshore in the Gulf of Guinea.

Shell had pioneered deepwater development in Nigeria, when SNEPCo launched the Bonga FPSO vessel in 2005.

The vessel has enjoyed significant expansion over the years with the further drilling of wells in Bonga Phases II and III, and through a subsea tie-back that unlocked the nearby Bonga north-west field in August 2014.

According to the company, Bonga north-west can produce approximately 65,000 barrels of oil equivalent a day.

On October 18, 2022, the 225,000 bpd capacity Bonga FPSO was shut down for statutory inspections, recertifications, and other critical asset integrity restoration activities.

SNEPCo completed the turnaround maintenance (TAM) of the Bonga FPSO vessel in November last year.

Kyari: Energy demand to increase by 35% in 2043, Africa must collaborate to aid transition

Mele Kyari, group chief executive officer (GCEO), Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, says African nations must cooperate and exchange expertise in order to achieve energy independence and transition as demand is expected to increase by 35 percent on the continent.

Kyari spoke at the 7th edition of sub-Saharan Africa international petroleum exhibition and conference (SAIPEC).

The event was themed ‘harnessing a sustainable African energy industry through partnerships’.

Kyari, represented by Adokiye Tombomieye, group executive vice-president, upstream, NNPC Limited, said the Nigerian oil and gas industry is experiencing a significant transformation following the passage of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA).

“As you are all aware, the act has provided role clarity in governance, rule-based administration, attractive and flexible fiscal terms and direct benefits for the host communities,” he said.

“All these are targeted at creating enablers for investor confidence in the Nigerian oil and gas sector, where ample

opportunities exist.

“Ironically, our restructuring is happening at a time when the energy transition discussion is gaining momentum, and major fund providers for petroleum upstream investment are now activists and anti-fossil fuel.

“As I have always canvassed, decreasing investments in hydrocarbon ventures cannot guarantee global energy security in the near future.

“Rather, an inclusive policy that guarantees access to finance and low-carbon technologies are key to sustaining global energy security and equitable growth.

“Nigeria, being geographically situated in the sub-African region and also a foremost leader in the oil and gas industry in subSaharan Africa, we must now capitalise on the advancements we have made in the industry to meet our energy demands, guarantee energy supply, expand our economies and overall, build a sustainable future for millions of people beyond our shores.

Kyari said the need for partnership is more reinforced as more African countries continue to make hydrocarbon discoveries.

He said the partnership would in no small measure assist in “achieving energy independence and also aid the transition to cleaner energy sources such as gas to sustain the region”.

“We should collaborate and share knowledge and help each other in critical areas including exploration and production, research and development, technical expertise and human capacity development to spread the wealth within the continent,” Kyari said.

“At NNPC Limited, we understand the importance

of partnerships in achieving a sustainable energy industry in Africa. This is why we have been working closely with countries, companies and other stakeholders to develop innovative solutions that meet the energy needs of the continent,” the GCEO said.

Troops kill 7 bandits in Kaduna

Acombined team of troops of the Nigerian Army and Navy have neutralized seven bandits during clearance operations in the Kasso general area of Chikun LGA.

This was contained in

a statement by the State Commissioner, Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan and made available to the media yesterday.

The statement revealed that the troops embarked on the operations, and made contact

with bandits around Ungwan Rimi village in Kasso, near a river. “The troops promptly engaged and subdued the bandits after an intense gun duel.

“Seven bandits were confirmed neutralized during the operation, with the high possibility of even more

eliminated and injured across the river. “

The troops recovered five motorcycles, 153 rounds of ammunition, seven magazines and three mobile phones during the operations.

Receiving the report, Governor Nasir El-Rufai praised

the troops for their doggedness and bravery.

The Governor commends the leadership of Maj-Gen TA Lagbaja, GOC One Division, and Cdre ME Ejumabone, Commandant of Nigerian Navy School of Armament Technology, in the successful operation.

SSANU elects officials in UniAbuja

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), University of Abuja Chapter has elected nine executives to pilot the affairs of the association for four years.

Some of the elected executive members are Mr. Nurudeen Yusuf; Chairman, Rita Ngoba Ikiroma; ViceChairman, Acc Amdii Amdii; Secretary

and the position of public Relations Officer (PRO) went to Mohammed Sani El-Yaqub.

In an interview with newsmen after the election, the newly elected chairman of the association, Mr. Nurudeen Yusuf, said his leadership would carry the members of the association along in the affairs of things.

He also said he would not hesitate to work hand in hand with the management of the University to fight for the welfare of the staff at all times.

He further charged the entire members to co-operate with him in order to move the association to the next level, and called for the support and unity of all the members.

Nurudeen, however, appealed to those who lost the election to join hands with him for the overall progress of the association.

Also speaking, the Public Relations Officer of the association, Mr. Mohammed Sani El-Yaqub, said he would always work towards the unity of the association.

He then pointed out that he would be relating with the executives as well as the members of the association for the sake of togetherness.

El-Yaqub, therefore, advised members to burry their differences and work for the oneness of the association.

However, it was observed that the voters conducted themselves peacefully and voted for the candidates of their choice without rancor and acrimony.

Stakeholders advocate accelerated actions for zero open defecation by 2025

Participants at the Second National Retreat for states on the clean Nigeria: Use the Toilet Campaign” have stressed the need to fast-track actions that would accelerate progress towards the attainment of Open Defecation Free (ODF) Nigeria by 2025.

They also stressed the need to re-think the effectiveness of current approaches and strategies for delivering National Sanitation targets; and for Nigeria to move beyond containment to safely managed sanitation, as well as harness different opportunities for fund raising and resource mobilisation.

This position was contained in a communique issued at the end of the Retreat, which held from 13th -14h February, 2023, in Abuja, with the theme: Sustaining the Gains of Improved sanitation towards an ODF Nigeria”. One hundred and twenty seven (127) participants drawn from State RUWASSA’s (32 States and FCT), Development Partners, WaterAid, NEWSAN, UNICEF, OPS-WASH, Youth WASH Africa, Lixil-SATO and ALGON. Others include representatives from Federal Ministries of Education and Environment, Civil Society Organisations and members of the press.

The communique was signed by representatives of North East

Zone, South West Zone, South East zone, North West Zone, SouthSouth Zone, North Central zone, and Director, Water Quality Control and Sanitation Federal Ministry of Water Resources, respectively.

According to the Communique, since the inception of the Clean Nigeria Campaign, some of the challenges identified that may deter the success are as follows: low political-wiIl at sub-national level; Low prioritisation; poor capacity; inadequate funding poor private sector support; poor partnership and collaboration.

The Communique read: “After two days of deliberations at Plenary and Technical Sessions, the following key resolutions arrived at and their implementation strategies: ODF drive through Clean Nigeria Campaign should move beyond containment to safely managed sanitation with consideration for urban areas; and States should intensify efforts and rethink their implementation strategies by adopting context specific approaches towards achieving ODF Status. States should review or develop

WASH related policies in line with the SDGS 6 Target, expanded and multifaceted partnerships at sub-national level are required to contribute to fast tracking progress and sustaining result towards meeting the SDGs-6 in Nigeria.

“States should explore and harness funding for sanitation via organised private sector, Philanthropists, indigenes in Diaspora, and States should harness opportunities available in sanitation economy within their jurisdiction through engagement with relevant stakeholders lIke

2023 Census: Minister tasks Journalists on accurate reportage

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has urged media Professionals to support the National Population Commission, NPC, to achieve reliable, accurate and acceptable, 2023 Population and Housing Census in the Territory.

The Minister stated this at a one day capacity building workshop organized for Journalists on the conduct and effective reporting of the 2023 Population and Housing Census by National Population Commission in Abuja Nigeria’s capital with the theme: “ Getting the people involved”. Represented by the Director, Information and Communication of the FCTA, Mr. Mohammed Sule Hazat explained that the Administration is working closely with traditional institutions and local authorities in the Territory to fully sensitise the residents especially those in rural communities on the importance of availing themselves and their households for the enumerators to be counted during the exercise.

While urging the participants to pay

attention and make judicious use of their time, the Minister explained that the workshop will build in the participants, capacity and the skills to enable them effectively and efficiently reports events, activities geared towards a successful national census.

According to him, “ Without an accurate data of the population and housing demographic in a country, the nation will not be able fully develop because you would have nothing to rely on when planning for the socio-economic and educational development of the country”.

Bello, who noted that, the 2023 National Population and Housing Census is critical for the advancement of Nigeria, stressed that it is, therefore, very important that adequately attention be paid for its conduct in order to ensure its success.

Earlier, the Federal Commissioner in charge of FCT, National Population Commission, Mr. Joseph Shazin Kwali stated that with the approval of the President for the conduct of the next Population and Housing Census in 2023, preparations are in top gear for the successful implementation of the census project Census.

He opined that it is a national event and is the responsibility of every citizen to participate by presenting themselves to be counted.

Shazin further explained that the Commission will no doubt, need the support of all stakeholders to deliver to the country a credible and reliable data it can use for sustainable development planning.

He said, “ Over the years, the Commission has invested considerable time and resources planning for the census by drawing from its rich institutional experience spanning two censuses and a pool of tested professionals to give the nation a truly digital and scientific census that will generate data for national planning within the context of our present realities.

“I am pleased to inform you all that the outcome of the preparatory activities of the 2023 Population and Housing census has been reassuring. The Commission has successfully demarcated 774 LGAs in all the States of the federation and the FCT”.

The Federal Commissioner disclosed that, the Commission has also conducted the first and the second census pre-test exercises to test the census instruments in preparation for the census added that the

trial census has been conducted in June 2022.

He added that the Commission is on course in its mission of delivering an accurate census to Nigerians and a strategic partnership with the media will form the tripod upon which the census architecture will stand to reach-out to the Nigerian people.

Shazin pointed out that the overarching goal of the workshop is to share with the participants the vision of the Commission and seek their support to ensure broadbased nationa’ cooperation for the implementation of the activities of the National Population Commission, especially the coming census 2023

He reassured the participants that the Commission will continue to engage them on all activities of the Commission especially, towards the successful conduct of the 2023 Population and Housing Census.

He reiterated that, getting the 2023 Population and Housing Census right is a task that must be done and the Commission is committed to ensuring that everything about the census is done rightly and professionally.

Former US President Jimmy Carter to receive hospice care

Former US President Jimmy Carter will end medical treatment and enter hospice care at his Georgia home, his foundation announced on Saturday.

The Carter Center said Mr Carter had decided to “spend his remaining time at home with his family,” but did not say what had prompted the decision.

Mr Carter, 98, has suffered from recent health issues, including a melanoma that spread to his liver and brain.

The country’s oldest living leader, he served one term in office from 1977-81.

During his tenure as president Mr Carter faced a spate of foreign policy challenges and the Democrat was defeated in his re-election bid by Ronald Reagan.

“He has the full support of his family and his medical team. The Carter family asks for privacy during this time and is grateful for the concern shown by his many admirers,” the Carter Center said in a statement on Saturday.

Terminally ill patients may seek hospice care instead of going through further medical treatment. The priority is not to provide further treatment, but to provide comfort towards the end of a patient’s life.

Mr Carter’s grandson, Jason Carter, a former Georgia state senator, tweeted that he visited “both of my grandparents yesterday.”

“They are at peace and - as always - their home is full of love. Thank you all for your kind words,” he said.

In 2021, Mr Carter and his wife Roslyn celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary. They have four children together.

Born in Georgia in 1924, Mr Carter entered politics in the 1960s when he was elected as state senator, before becoming the state’s governor in 1971.

Five years later he defeated the sitting Republican President Gerald Ford to become the 39th commander-in-chief.

But problems quickly mounted for Mr Carter as president.

At home, an oil crisis produced high inflation and unemployment, and he struggled to persuade Americans to accept the required austerity measures.

The high-point of the Carter years was the signing of the Camp David Accords in 1978 in which Egypt formally recognised the state of Israel. He also signed a treaty returning control of the Panama Canal to Panama.

But in 1979 the last Shah of Iran was overthrown and 66 Americans were taken hostage in Tehran in the aftermath. Mr Carter cut off diplomatic relations with Iran in response and introduced a trade embargo.

However, the public did not believe he was being tough enough and his popularity slumped as the US hostages were held for 444 days. His approval ratings took a further hit after an attempt to rescue the hostages failed and eight US military members were killed.

Iran then delayed the release of the hostages until after Ronald Reagan was sworn in.

Since leaving the White House, Mr Carter has remained active, carrying out humanitarian work with his Carter Center.

He led a delegation that sought to persuade military leaders in Haiti to surrender power in 1994 and he brokered a ceasefire in Bosnia that helped pave the way for the future peace treaty there.

He went on to gain an international reputation for his work in promoting human rights, winning a Nobel Peace Prize

in 2002.

With Nelson Mandela, he founded The Elders, a group of global leaders who committed themselves to work on peace and human rights.

He also travelled extensively - well into his early 90s - and took part in annual trips to build homes with the Habitat for Humanity charity.

But the former president has also battled a host of health issues in recent years. In August 2015, Mr Carter had a small cancerous mass removed from his liver.

The following year he announced that he needed no further treatment, as an experimental drug had eliminated any sign of cancer.

He has frequently expressed a striking

calmness when dealing with his health challenges.

“I’m perfectly at ease with whatever comes,” he said in 2015. “I’ve had an exciting, adventurous and gratifying existence.”

Mr Carter celebrated his most recent birthday in October in Plains, the tiny Georgia town where he and his wife were born between the First World War and the Great Depression, and where they returned when he left office.

A host of senior US politiciansincluding Democratic Senate leader Chuck Schumer, New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock - offered their thoughts and prayers to Mr Carter’s family as news broke on Saturday night.

China may give Russia weapons for Ukraine war, Antony Blinken warns

China is considering giving Russia weapons and ammunition for the Ukraine war, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said.

Mr Blinken told CBS News that Chinese companies were already providing “nonlethal support” to Russia - and new information suggested Beijing could provide “lethal support”.

This escalation would mean “serious consequences” for China, he warned.

China has denied reports that Moscow has requested military equipment.

Chinese President Xi Jinping is an ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin and is yet to condemn Russia’s invasion - but he has sought to remain neutral in the conflict and has called for peace.

Mr Blinken was speaking to CBS after he met China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, on Saturday at the Munich Security Conference.

He said that during the meeting he expressed “deep concerns” about the “possibility that China will provide lethal material support to Russia”.

“To date, we have seen Chinese companies... provide non-lethal support to Russia for use in Ukraine. The concern that we have now is based on information we have that they’re considering providing lethal support,” he said.

He did not elaborate on what information the US had received about China’s potential plans. When pressed on what the US believed

China might give to Russia, he said it would be primarily weapons as well as ammunition.

The US has sanctioned a Chinese company for allegedly providing satellite imagery of Ukraine to the mercenary Wagner Group, which supplies Russia with thousands of fighters.

Mr Blinken told CBS that “of course, in China, there’s really no distinction between private companies and the state”.

If China provided Russia with weapons, that would cause a “serious problem for us and in our relationship”, he added.

Relations between Washington and Beijing were already poor after the US shot down an alleged Chinese spy balloon in early February. Both sides exchanged angry words, but equally both sides appeared embarrassed by the incident and seemed ready to move on.

But if China were to deliver weapons to help Russian forces in Ukraine, then USChinese relations would deteriorate much more severely.

Mr Blinken’s warning seems to be clearly designed to deter China from doing that.

Mr Blinken also said the US was worried about China helping Russia evade Western sanctions designed to cripple Russia’s economy. China’s trade with Russia has been growing, and it is one of the biggest markets for Russian oil, gas, and coal.

Nato members, including the US, are sending a variety of weapons, ammunition and equipment to Ukraine, including tanks. They have stopped short of sending fighter jets, and Mr Blinken would not be drawn on whether the US would help other countries

supply jets.

“We’ve been very clear that we shouldn’t fixate or focus on any particular weapons system,” he said.

He did, however, say that the West must ensure Ukraine had what it needed for a potential counter offensive against Russia “in the months ahead”. Russia is currently trying to advance in eastern regions of Ukraine, where some of the fiercest fighting of the war has taken place.

Mr Wang said in Munich yesterday that China had “neither stood by idly nor thrown fuel on the fire” for the Ukraine war, Reuters reported.

China would publish a document that laid out its position on settling the conflict, Mr Wang said. The document would state that the territorial integrity of all countries must be respected, he said.

“I suggest that everybody starts to think calmly, especially friends in Europe, about what kind of efforts we can make to stop this war,” Mr Wang said.

He added that there were “some forces that seemingly don’t want negotiations to succeed, or for the war to end soon”, but did not say who he meant.

The Chinese President, Mr Xi, is scheduled to deliver a “peace speech” on the anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Friday, 24 February, according to Italy’s foreign minister Antonio Tajani.

Mr Tajani told Italian radio that Mr Xi’s speech would call for peace without condemning Russia, Reuters reported.

During their meeting, Mr Blinken and Mr

Wang also exchanged strong words on the deepening row over an alleged Chinese spy balloon that was shot down over the US.

Mr Blinken said during the meeting that the US would not “stand for any violation of our sovereignty” and said “this irresponsible act must never again occur”.

Mr Blinken told CBS that other nations were concerned about what he called China’s “surveillance balloon program” across five continents.

Mr Wang, meanwhile, called the episode a “political farce manufactured by the US” and accused them of “using all means to block and suppress China”. China has denied sending a spy balloon. Source BBC

Israeli diplomat escorted from AU summit

Israeli diplomat Sharon Barli was escorted from the African Union heads of state summit as she was not the person accredited to represent Israel, an AU spokesperson has said.

Video circulating online shows her being walked out of the meeting in Ethiopia by a security guard.

An Israeli spokesperson has blamed South Africa and Algeria for the removal.

Israel’s status at the AU has been a source of contention.

The video appears to show a security guard approaching the Israeli delegation while the opening ceremony of the annual meeting was going on.

There was a discussion and Ms Bar-li, who is the deputy director general for Africa at Israel’s foreign ministry, then left alongside a security guard.

“Israel views seriously the incident in which... Ambassador

Sharon Bar-li, was removed from the African Union hall despite her status as an accredited observer with access badges,” foreign ministry spokesperson Lior Hayat is quoted by the Times of Israel as saying.

He then blamed Algeria and South Africa as being behind the move, adding that they were “driven by hatred”.

But an AU official has said Ms Bar-li was “asked to leave” as she had not been invited to be there and the only invitation, which was not transferable, was given to Israel’s AU ambassador Aleli Admasu, the AFP news agency reports.

“It is regrettable that the individual in question would abuse such a courtesy,” AFP quotes the unnamed official as saying.

AU commission chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat granted Israel observer status in 2021, but

this decision was queried, with Palestinians urging a rethink, and a committee was formed last year to look at the issue. While rejecting the accusation that it had anything to do with the diplomat’s removal, a South African spokesperson said that Israel’s status had not yet been

settled., the Reuters news agency reports.

“Until the AU takes a decision on whether to grant Israel observer status, you cannot have the country sitting and observing,” Clayson Monyela, head of public diplomacy in South Africa’s department of international

relations, is quoted as saying.

In recent years, Israel has made a big effort to strengthen diplomatic relations with several African countries.

Earlier this month, Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno was in Israel to open an embassy in Tel Aviv.

Christian Atsu found dead after Turkey earthquake

Footballer Christian Atsu has been found dead under the rubble of his home almost two weeks after the Turkey earthquake, his agent has confirmed.

The Ghana international, 31, had spells with Premier League sides Everton, Chelsea and Newcastle.

Atsu had been missing since the 6 February quake that caused the collapse of his apartment in Antakya, Hatay.

“There are no words to describe our sadness,” tweeted his Turkish top-flight club Hatayspor.

“We will not forget you, Atsu. Peace be upon you, beautiful person.”

In the aftermath of the quake, Hatayspor initially reported Atsu had been rescued “with injuries”, but a day later that position changed.

His agent Nana Sechere, who has been in Hatay, confirmed the news on Saturday on Twitter, writing: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce to all well wishers that sadly Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning.

“My deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their prayers and support.”

The Ghana Football Association said Atsu’s body was recovered on Saturday morning after “almost two weeks of emotional torture”.

The Ghanaian foreign ministry added that Atsu’s elder brother and twin sister were at the site when his body was recovered.

Atsu’s body was flown back to

Ghana on Saturday for burial.

The ministry said it sent “deepest condolences to the widow and family”.

The earthquake and aftershocks in southern Turkey and northern Syria are known to have killed more than 40,000 people.

‘A talented player and a special person’

Atsu joined Hatayspor in September after a season with Saudi Arabian team Al-Raed and scored the winning goal in a Super Lig match on 5 February.

He won 65 caps for Ghana and helped his country reach the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations final where they lost to Ivory Coast on penalties. Atsu was later named player of the tournament.

In a tweet, Ghana’s men’s team the Black Stars paid tribute to the winger, writing: “You served our Country well, forever in our hearts. Rest in Peace.”

He joined Chelsea from Porto in 2013 and had several loan spells at clubs including Everton and Bournemouth.

An initial loan period at Newcastle in 2016, in which he helped the team win promotion from the Championship to the Premier League, was made permanent in 2017.

Newcastle forward Allan Saint-Maximin paid tribute to his former team-mate before his side’s game against Liverpool on Saturday.

“It’s hard to explain. I’m not going to lie, I’d never seen a guy like that before when I arrived at

Newcastle,” Saint-Maximin told Sky Sports.

“He was always giving me advice, always. He was a very nice guy, always joking and smiling, when he played or didn’t play.

“He was a great person, so that’s why it’s sad for me.”

Former Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez, who spent just over three years in charge at St James’ Park until 2019, said he had been in contact with his former player last month.

Benitez told Sky Sports: “We were sharing some messages - it’s very difficult for me to express in English - but I was feeling so bad and I was trying to contact him.

“Also, I don’t want to forget

the rest of the people because there are a lot of people that have been in a really difficult time and I think we have to help in a way and today we have to remember Christian. Really sad.”

Newcastle said the club was “profoundly saddened” by Atsu’s death, calling him “a talented player and a special person, he will always be fondly remembered by our players, staff and supporters”.

Everton said they were “deeply saddened” by the news, while Chelsea said they were “devastated”.

There were minutes of applause before Premier League games on Saturday and players will also wore black armbands in

remembrance.

Ghana sports broadcaster Michael Oti Adjei told BBC World Service Sportshour: “He was always grounded and he had a nice word for everybody.

“He was a lovely person to deal with and was one heck of a player too. He had a very good left foot and played 65 times for Ghana, scoring more than 10 goals. He paid his dues to the national team.

“When he made his debut, there was talk of a nickname of Ghana’s Messi. Those who knew him were talking of a young Ghanaian player who could potentially become one of the best African players ever.”

Turkey-Syria earthquake: The Syrian who dug his fiancee out of the rubble

Aysha Moarri, 45, is sobbing while caressing a white, quilted body bag on the back of a lorry.

“How are you leaving me behind? You were the only reason that I stayed alive... How can I breathe now?”

Her daughter is inside. Next to her are the bodies of five other members of their family.

It’s another cold bright afternoon at the Bab al-Hawa border crossing between southern Turkey and oppositionheld north-western Syria.

Syrian refugee families who have lost loved ones in the earthquake that struck southern Turkey last week are gathered there to help repatriate their bodies.

Around us the heavy smell of death hangs in the air.

Aysha, her husband Nouman, and their four-year-old granddaughter Elma, were the only survivors after the six-story block of flats they were living in collapsed.

Aysha and Nouman lost two daughters, one son, and two granddaughters, and were still searching for their son-in-law.

The family fled the civil war in Syria eight years ago, hoping for a fresh start, and took refuge in the southern Turkish city of Antakya. The city is now in ruins, with more than half of its buildings damaged.

The name of each Syrian victim brought to Bab al-Hawa is written with a blue pen on the body bags, to ensure they can be identified once back home.

“Take good care of each other. Shirin, my dear, take care of your brother and sister and my beloved grandchildren,” says Aysha as she kisses her daughter’s body through the white cloth.

Her fingers linger on the lorry as it begins to pull away, clearly not wanting to let go.

Her husband breaks into tears at the sight of the truck crossing the border.

“Goodbye my dears... You will all go home... You will be together,” Nouman says, waving a bandaged hand.

That morning, five more lorries arrive at the border carrying the bodies of Syrians recovered from under the rubble. Some are just wrapped in blankets, rather than body bags.

Makeshift rescue operation

Among the wreckage of the the Moarri family’s flat back in Antakya, two glass pomegranates sit perfectly intact on a shelf. A painting still hangs above the table. The rest of the room has collapsed.

Wearing a high-visibility vest, Ali, who was engaged to Aysha’s middle daughter, Viam, carries on searching through the rubble.

He shows us where he found Viam’s body. They had been in love for four years but it was only a week before the earthquake that he had persuaded her father to accept their engagement.

“That night we were still texting each other on WhatsApp until late. We weren’t able to sleep,” he says.

At around 04:00 he received a text message from Viam: “Are you awake? I had a weird nightmare,” she wrote.

They were in the middle of a video call when the earth started to shake.

“I had just been telling her that she shouldn’t think about that bad dream. And then we told each other we loved each other. She was sitting on her bed and laughing quietly,” Ali recalls, trying hard to not break into tears.

“I saw her trying to run, but her phone was plugged into the wall and it slowed her down. Then the picture froze. The screen went black.”

A fitness trainer who has combat training experience with the armed opposition in Syria, Ali was able to protect himself by crawling under the table in his room.

“When the earthquake finished, I ran out. Our whole neighbourhood was devastated.

“I can’t remember how I walked to the street where she [Viam] was living. It took me twice as long as all the roads were blocked.”

When he got to the block of flats, a makeshift rescue operation organised by neighbours was already under way. He called friends to join them. Hours went by and no official aid came.

Ali says he and his friends are from areas of Syria that have been frequently bombed by Syrian government forces during the war, so they have had some training and experience in search and rescue already. Syrians have to help Syrians, he adds.

Finding Viam

Part of the large area of northwestern Syria affected by the earthquake is under the control of the Syrian government. Another part - where the Moarri family is from - is held by armed groups opposed to President Bashar al-Assad.

The co-ordination of the rescue and aid operations has therefore been highly complex, involving multiple parties to the conflict, the countries supporting them and international humanitarian organisations.

Ali feels resentful towards the international community, saying powerful countries are

playing out larger conflicts in Syria and that the Syrian people are suffering as a result.

“All the world came to help Turkey, and thank God that Turkey is a strong country itself. But how about Syria?”

“I don’t want to talk about politics but from a humanitarian point of view, we don’t have electricity, or clean water, not even homes.”

He added: “Our houses have been devastated by the war, and now the earthquake. Of course, we accept what comes from God. But I should tell the world: enough.”

After eight days of searching, Ali found the body of his beloved Viam. She was hugging her brother Mohammed when she died.

Now, with a group of 15 fellow Syrians, Ali is working to find other Syrian families.

Fine concrete dust covers them. It is everywhere heremaking our eyes gritty, and our hair grey.

During the first 10 days after the earthquake more than 2,306 bodies were sent over the border into Syria, according to Turkish

authorities.

Turkish border police tell us that it has been a massive operation for them, and a challenging one to co-ordinate. Sometimes they are ready to send the bodies, but the other side is not ready to receive them. Sometimes, it is the opposite. As we prepare to leave, we see a man cuddling the body of his three-week-old baby wrapped in a small blanket. He is asking for help to take her body back to their home in an opposition-held part of Idlib province.

He had dug his daughter out of the rubble, then brought her across the border to Turkey for medical treatment. But she did not survive.

The Moarri family finally recovered the last person they were looking for - the body of their son-in-law - 10 days after the earthquake.

I ask Ali why the Syrian refugees are sending their family’s bodies to Syria.

“It is our home. It is where we still hope and believe that one day we will go back to. We want our loved ones to wait for us there.”

Five killed in Israeli strike on Damascus, Syria says

Syria’s military says five people have died after what it alleged were Israeli missiles hit the capital Damascus and surrounding areas on Sunday.

Officials said a building was hit in the central Kafr Sousa neighbourhood, killing four civilians and one soldier.

The densely populated district is home to a large, heavily guarded security complex.

Israel’s military declined to

comment on the strike when approached by Reuters news agency.

Israel frequently attacks targets in Syria linked to Iran and Hezbollah militants but rarely acknowledges its actions. However, attacks on residential areas are rare.

Sunday’s attack was the first since a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the north-west of the country, as well as parts of neighbouring

Turkey, 12 days ago.

The Kafr Sousa area is home to senior officials and security agencies, but also civilians living in residential buildings.

The strike - which hit at 00:22 local time (21:22 GMT)caused damage to several homes in Damascus neighbourhoods and other nearby areas, Syrian officials said.

The country’s defence ministry said the rockets were launched from the Golan

Heights, a rocky plateau southwest of Damascus which was annexed by Israel in 1981.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put the death toll at 15 people, including civilians.

“The strike on Sunday is the deadliest Israeli attack in the Syrian capital,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the observatory.

It comes over a month after an Israeli strike hit Damascus’s

international airport, according to the Syrian army, killing four people including two soldiers.

Israel has previously acknowledged that it targets the bases of militant groups loyal to Iran.

The two countries are archfoes and in recent years have been engaged in what has been described as a “shadow war” of unclaimed attacks on each other’s assets, infrastructure and nationals. Source: BBC

Education President Buhari launches girls education project

President Muhammadu Buhari in a bid to redeem his pledge to uphold the education and empowerment of Nigerian women and girls, has officially flagged off the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment, (AGILE), Project.

The flag-off which was held in Abuja during the Presidential launch of the High-Level Advisory Council, (HLAC) to support women and girls’ projects and initiatives.

The essence of HLAC is to effectively coordinate women empowerment-focused programs and initiatives in Nigeria such as the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment, (AGILE); the National Women’s Economic Empowerment (WEE) Policy Dialogue; and Nigeria for Women Project Scale-Up (NFWP-SU).

HLAC is also meant to be a standing presidentialcommittee focused on achieving SDG 5 by the year 2030. It is comprised of representatives of government, multisectoral, public sector, private sector, social and technical sectors as well as an Interministerial Working Group.

President Buhari expressed delight at the inauguration of HLAC, and the subsequent launch of the AGILE Project which he emphasized were indicative of his Administration’s commitment to the advancement of women and girl-child empowerment in the country.

In his address, the Honourable Minister of Education,Malam Adamu Adamu, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Andrew, David Adejoh briefed

the President on the Project’s current level ofimplementation at the Federal and State levels.

The Minister also revealed that the focus of the AGILE Project is to impact the lives of 40 million Nigerians.

Adamu added that the Federal Ministry of Education was keen to ensure that the Project is mainstreamed into existing government programmes so as to enhance the growth of

institutions, sustainability, andattainment of government’s education goals.

He also appreciated President Buhari for his unwavering support to the Education sector adding that the Ministry’s goal is to promote progress in the attainment of goals in Universal Basic Education, Sustainable Development Goal 4, as well as ensure that Nigerian learners and youths develop themselves

to be assets to the Nation.

In his remarks, the World Bank Country Director, Mr. Shubham Chaudri, commended the Federal Government on the launch of the AGILE Project. Heopined that there was no better investment than Girl-child education and empowerment.

The Country Director added that educating and empowering women will help in exploring and enhancing their potentials

to be productive members of society.

The Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment, (AGILE) Project is a 5-year (2020-2025) World Bank-assisted project aimed at improving secondary school opportunities for adolescent girls in the current implementing states of Borno, Ekiti, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, and Plateau States.

JoSTUM gets new Vice Chancellor

The Governing Council of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University Makurdi, JoSTUM, former Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi has appointed Prof. Isaac Itodo as the 7th Vice Chancellor of the institution.

An alumnus of the university, Prof. Itodo who would assume duties on April 17, 2023 succeeds Prof. Richard Kimbir, whose tenure as VC ended on November 19, 2022.

He will take over from Professor Paul

Annune who has been acting in that capacity since November 2022.

The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Edith Uwajumogwu who announced the appointment in a statement at the weekend, said Prof. Itodo, a renowned agricultural engineer, is the first alumnus of the university to be appointed VC since the university was established in 1988.

She noted that the new VC emerged from a list of 16 after coming tops in a selection process adjudged open and credible.

Part of the statement read, “in the process, JoSTUM’s interest was put first. Nobody was under any pressure. We went for merit and took the best for the University to take its pride of place in the Nigerian university system.

“Itodo, 58, joined the services of the university in 1987. He rose through the ranks and was elevated to the rank of professor in 2003.

“He has served the university in various capacities, including Head of the Department of Agricultural Engineering, Dean of the College of Engineering and

Director of Linkages.

“Itodo is an outstanding scholar, administrator and a good resource manager who will undoubtedly contribute to the university’s development.

“He is a scholar-practitioner who holds two patents, a National Productivity Award Winner, and a Fellow of the Academy of Engineering, amongst his numerous academic titles.”

Prof. Itodo would be the second nonTiv Vice Chancellor of the University after Prof. Francis Idachaba who was the pioneer VC of the institution.

Ghana President Nana Akufo-Addo’s cathedral plan stalls

In the heart of Ghana’s capital, Accra, hoardings plastered with artistic impressions of an architectural marvel block prying eyes from seeing what lies on the other side.

Depending on who you ask, the planned multi-million dollar building - known as the National Cathedral of Ghana - is either a symbol of the country’s economic mismanagement or a strategic and bold investment.

In a speech at the turn of the new year, just two weeks after Ghana effectively defaulted on repaying most of its external debt amid a mounting cost-of-living and economic crisis, President Nana Akufo-Addo, scoffing at critics, renewed his commitment to the religious building.

“The National Cathedral is an act of thanksgiving to the Almighty for his blessings, favour, grace and mercies on our nation,” the president said at the construction site where a Bible-reading marathon had been taking place.

God, he said, had spared Ghana from conflict that had afflicted many countries, including some of its West African neighbours, who have been dealing with numerous security challenges.

The president then announced a personal donation of 100,000 cedis ($8,000; £6,700) towards the construction costs. It was envisioned to be a sacred space for all Christians, who make up 70% of the population, and where national religious services could take place.

But Mr Akufo-Addo’s enthusiasm for the project has divided public opinion.

Though most of the costs are supposed to be covered by donations, with the state providing the land and some seed funding, critics have queried the amount of money - some $58m - that the government has so far spent in these economically straitened times.

On top of this, the project has been beset by allegations of misappropriation of funds as well as questions over the awarding of the design tender to celebrated BritishGhanaian architect Sir David Adjaye, a situation that caused friction with some of the top Christian leaders who make up the National Cathedral board of trustees.

The authorities reject these claims and the board has approved a financial audit, as well as agreeing to let parliament investigate the way contracts were awarded.

Ghanaian economist Theo Acheampong believes the government’s priorities are misplaced, considering the country’s current economic situation,

amid economic crisis

including a depreciating currency, dwindling foreign reserves and strained public finances.

“This is a generational crisis. Inflation is in excess of 50%, the country is not able to repay its debt, forcing the government to cut back on expenditure. And also at a time the government is seeking a $3bn loan from the International Monetary Fund, the cathedral is not a priority for the nation,” Mr Acheampong said.

Mr Akufo-Addo first revealed plans for the cathedral after he won the 2016 election and the architect was appointed two years later. But work on what the president has referred to as “his gratitude to God” only began in 2022, two years after his re-election.

However, the sound of heavy machinery carving the earth and animated workers shouting over the din at the construction site is no more after MPs refused in December to approve a further budget allocation of $6.3m from the government.

Contributing to a debate in parliament last month MP Sam George, a prominent critic of the project, quoted the Gospel of Luke in the New Testament to excoriate the government.

“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it? For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you, saying: ‘This person began to build and wasn’t able to finish,” his opposition colleagues suitably amused, cheered when he finished reading the verses.

The project cannot be faulted for its vision.

A nine-acre site of prime land between the parliament building, the national theatre and the international conference centre, was hived off for the National Cathedral.

It had earlier been occupied by residential houses for judges, a decision to demolish them sparked its own controversy.

Drawing inspiration from Ghana’s rich arts and culture, the cathedral will have a high pitched staggered roof imitating the architecture of the Akan people. It will also include emblems like the royal stool from the Ashanti people and ceremonial canopies.

Artists from Ghana and other African countries will be invited to create the cathedral’s religious adornment and furnishings.

According to the plan, the main building will have 5,000 permanent seats with room for thousands more, a music school, an art gallery, shops, a national crypt for state burials and it will also be home to Africa’s first

But Mr Mensah told the BBC that the building would cost no more than $350m. “That figure is sacrosanct,” he said explaining that the cathedral would be a Christian hub attracting visitors on the continent and beyond making it economically viable

Bible museum.

However, the grandeur does not impress its critics.

“Tax-payers’ money should not be used fund a personal pledge to God,” the MP Mr George told the BBC.

He referred to the cathedral as a “vanity project” reminiscent of the The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro - the largest church in the world - built by Ivory Coast’s independence leader Félix Houphouët-Boigny to transform his hometown.

“We are Christians but the government has no business funding the construction of a religious building,” Mr George said.

Despite the opposition, Paul Opoku-Mensah, the presidential appointee leading the National Cathedral project, remains confident in its viability and sees it as a way to boost the economy.

“Unlike Ivory Coast, we have a strategy of bringing visitors to Ghana. We have to use our religiosity for our own development,” he said.

Mr Mensah has visited the Bible Museum in Washington DC and is negotiating loaning religious artefacts from Israel to display at the cathedral once complete.

The cost of the project has been a moving target, according to critics, who say it has been inflated over time, including a claim that it could rise to $1bn.

But Mr Mensah told the BBC that the building would cost no more than $350m. “That figure is sacrosanct,” he said explaining that the cathedral would be a Christian hub attracting visitors on the continent and beyond making it economically viable.

He also denied claims that the cathedral was the Christian majority’s response to the $10m Ghana National Mosque which was built using funding from the Turkish government. That was launched in 2012.

But Mr Mensah said the project had been “caught up in the divisive politics of our country”, adding that while Ghana’s economic crisis cannot be ignored, critics did not appreciate the viability of the cathedral, which early estimates say could generate

$95m in five years.

“We’re looking at what great cathedrals did to Europe by extending the frontiers in music, art and engineering, but given the economic conditions we face, we can review our plan, like do phased construction and reconsider what type of artefacts we install in the building,” he said.

After parliament rejected funding for the cathedral, Mr Mensah said his team was looking at other ways of raising the money.

“We are developing plans for mass mobilisation of funds; like rallying a million Christians to donate $20 a month for two years.

We also want to attract donors, the private sector and the diaspora community to contribute.”

Mr Mensah has however not given up on convincing MPs to back funding for the project. He hopes to organise a meeting with them because he believes some do not have a full understanding of the project.

But he too admits the project is under threat and unlikely to be completed next year before President Akufo-Addo leaves office.

“The completion is dependent on our ability to raise the needed resources. That’s what we are focused on now,” Mr Mensah said.

NFF commiserates with Ghana FA over Atsu’s death

The Nigeria Football Federation has officially commiserated with the Ghana Football Association over the unfortunate death of Black Stars’ ace, Christian Atsu in the tragic Türkiye earthquake.

Reports on Saturday, quoting the player’s agent, said Atsu was found dead in the rubble and his remains had been flown to Ghana for burial, sending shock waves round the universe.

In a letter signed by the General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, the NFF said it was devastated by the news about one of Ghana’s standout performers on the pitch, and prayed earnestly for God to comfort the family, friends, the GFA and the entire Ghanaian football family for his demise.

“The Nigeria Football Federation, and indeed, the Nigeria Football family has on Saturday, 18th February 2023 received with much sadness news of the death of Black Stars’ player Christian Atsu, who has reportedly been found dead in the rubble of the recent earthquake that ravaged Türkiye.

“Our collective grief knows no bounds for a highly dedicated professional who was one of the very best at his craft, a super patriot who served Ghana to the best of his abilities and a stellar talent of the beautiful game. We remember Atsu as that rare talent who was the overwhelming choice for Player of the Tournament at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations finals in Equatorial Guinea, and also won the Goal of the Tournament award.

“His 65 caps and nine goals for the Black Stars make him one of the sterling individuals in Ghana’s international game in the past two decades. His sense of dedication to duty is underscored by his eye-catching 90th minute goal that won the game for his Club, Hatayspor in a Turkish league game less than 24

The Africa Sports Management Association, headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya has officially accorded recognition to the newly appointed Executive Board of its Nigeria chapter, headed by Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, who is also General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation.

In a letter personally signed by the Acting President of ASMA, Professor

Oluwaseun Omotayo, fully endorsed the new executive team which has Dr. Sanusi as President, while Dr. Timipreye Okout and Ms. Nkechi Obi are first and second vice Presidents respectively.

Mr. Nunayon Olumide Travih is the secretary-general.

Others appointed into the ASMA Nigeria chapter are Dr. Aminu Mohammed (policy and strategic

Dr. Sanusi, a former university lecturer, has variously served as General Manager (Accommodation) for the

organizing committee of the 8th AllAfrica Games that Nigeria hosted in 2003, Assistant Secretary General (Competitions) for the Nigeria Football Federation and Director of Competitions, NFF before attaining the position of NFF General Secretary in March 2015. He is also a qualified Football Coach, as well as President, National Colleges of Education Games.

FIFA Women’s World Cup: Trophy Tour to launch big plan for Super Falcons

Renowned sports marketing company, HotSports says it is at an advanced stage of baking an elaborate plan for a huge boost from Corporate Nigeria for the Senior Women National Team, Super Falcons’ campaign at the 9th FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in Australia and New Zealand this summer.

“I am happy at the conversation we have had with the NFF President, which centred on doing something special for the Super Falcons around the FIFA Women’s World Cup,” HotSports President/ CEO, Mr. Taye Ige said after a meeting with President of NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau in Abuja on Thursday.

The Super Falcons will be one of the 32 teams to compete at FIFA Women’s World Cup Down Under between 20th July – 20th August, and Nigeria is one of only seven countries to have featured in every

edition of FIFA’s flagship women tournament since it was launched in China 32 years ago.

Ige added: “There is no gainsaying that this is the biggest Women’s World Cup in history and there is the need to get as much support as possible for the team to have the best preparations possible for the finals.” He disclosed that the meeting had been facilitated by a Member of the NFF Board and immediate past Chairman of the Nigeria Women Football League, Ms Aisha Falode, who expressed her enthusiasm to have Corporate Nigeria coalesce support for the Falcons ahead of the World Cup.

In a move that further underscores the desire of the present NFF administration to take the branding, marketing and general management of the women National Teams to levels never previously contemplated, Gusau said he agreed to meet with Ige in a turf-exploring meeting because the Federation is ready to consider proposals that will robustly boost

the women’s game.

“Women’s football has earned the right to greater attention, interest and funding, and we have to follow in the paths of what FIFA is doing for the game. We have 32 teams playing in Australia and New Zealand, making this the biggest-ever Women’s World Cup. Our Super Falcons definitely need all the support to prepare adequately for the finals,” NFF President Gusau said.

Ige says HotSports is excited that the original Women’s World Cup trophy is coming to Nigeria for only the third time and the organization will use the trophy tour of 26th March in Abuja as a launchpad for its project.

The Super Falcons are presently in Mexico for a Four-Nation Tournament involving the host nation as well as World Cup-bound Costa Rica and Colombia, after which they will take part in another tournament in Türkiye in April.

At long last President Buhari condescended to address his fellow Nigerians on his controversial monetary policy –the so-called redesign of three denominations of the national currency, on February 16. He did what he should have done from the beginning to inform and educate the public on why he chose to do it and what the economy, the people and the country stand to gain from it. But given his famous penchant towards rulership instead of leadership, he tends to treat his policies as divine imperatives beyond question by mere mortals. The air has gone out of his know-itall balloon.

And then this one blew up in his face and he was forced to do what he hates to do – talk to his fellow Nigerians – in an effort to do the ultimate damage control himself. The damage to our national economy and his own image is by now extensive. Protests over naira scarcity has led to avoidable deaths and destruction. Angry fellow Nigerians denied the right to get their money from the banks after waiting in line for hours, took it out on some branches of the banks and torched them in various parts of the country. There is anger and there is hunger and there is poverty imposed on the people.

A flurry of litigations against the federal government flooded the Supreme Court as parts of efforts to legally force the president and his alter ego, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to appreciate the telling fact that their policy had become a clear and obvious danger to the people and the country. They refused to listen to anyone and stuck to their collective self-righteous wisdom when leadership rather than rulership recommended itself for their due consideration.

None of this should have happened, at least not at this time and in the manner the policy was rammed down our throats. The policy is a pile on on our distress as a nation. Our misery index has naturally risen towards the stratosphere. We are spending hours at fuel stations daily. That in itself is a huge challenge and one that has been with us for as long as anyone can remember.

Our country, whatever the president’s spin doctors might say, is confronted with a multitude of challenges that cannot be tackled with a policy decision that aggravates them. This country is the least ready of nations for a cashless economy. There are no infrastructures for its implementation in the urban and rural areas. What has taken other developed nations years of a gradual process to address must be made to bend to our kia-kia mentality. A cashless economy cannot reflate our national economy, let alone respond to the many challenges it faces.

The president might have meant well, as he tried to educate us in his broadcast yesterday but still, the following stick out. One, it has aggravated our national poverty. Buhari does not need this in the twilight zone of his presidency. He is leaving us with the legacy of a poorly managed economy. That is bad enough. It was unconscionable to pile it on because he aims to reign in the use of money as a tool for elections. Elections everywhere in the world cost lots of money. In only rare cases do those with deep pockets fail to win the trophy. Money fought for his election in 2015 and his re-election in 2019.

Two, I can think of nothing that made the redesign of the national currency an urgent imperative in the management of our national economy. An economy in the doldrums does not rise up with the repainting of the national currency. The scarcity of the redesigned naira is punitive in conception, intent, and implementation. The redesign has not turned the naira into gold and therefore so scarce it is out of the rich of the struggling masses.

Four, from the totality of public opinions, the policy was conceived by the president and the CBN governor in secrecy and, therefore, cannot escape the charge that it was ignoble in conception, ignoble in intentions and profoundly ignoble in its harsh implementation. It was not and could not have been intended to help improve the economy. For the first time in recent memory, a monetary policy is being used as a dangerous tool in the primitive political struggles to achieve certain political objectives as many knowledgeable people have pointed out. As usual, the elephants are fighting, and the people are being trampled under their feet.

Five, the current change in stance with the old naira notes remaining legal tender until the end of April might have a) come too late to be effective in that the banks have already mopped up the old notes or b) undermined the policy itself. If the old notes are no longer available, what would the extension achieve but more frustrations for the people who can get neither the old nor the new notes?

Buhari chose to conceive of and implement a monetary policy that anyone could see has the potential to damage whatever legacies he intends to leave for his fellow Nigerians. The man came into office in 2015 with the best goodwill in the world. The people responded to him in a manner that none of his predecessors in office enjoyed. They believed in his promise of change to clean up the governance system, chain insecurity, kill corruption and set the nation on the path of a steady economic and social growth.

He has managed, quite remarkably, to squander the public goodwill. He is unable to find the icing on the cake of his eight years in power as president. There is chaos everywhere; criminals have the best times of it; the corrupt have the best times of it. Everything that did not need to go wrong went wrong. What needed to be fixed were not fixed because he has not provided the kind of leadership the nation needs to heal its many gaping wounds and unite the people for a common cause, the cause of a nation with the commonality of interests, opportunities, ambitions, and aspirations. We are more divided than ever before. We are divided along ethnic and religious lines and our fault lines have widened. That Buhari would ignore all these and push ahead with a monetary policy this damaging to the national economy, the country, and its hapless citizens, is not just unfortunate, it is tragic. Whoever succeeds him in May this year, will have more than he bargained for on his plate.DA

If the policy was meant to deny some criminal elements a lifeline and the politicians the right to let the people eat some crumbs from their polished dining tables, then the people have become collateral damages. A monetary policy conceived with noble intentions should take this possibility and the unintended consequences into due consideration in its implementation to at least ensure that the people are not damaged victims.
