To curate a program that would be informative for a wide variety of emerging brand owners, we drew on the many resources available through our network of suppliers, co-manufacturers and co-packers, consultants, partner organizations, and editorial experts, to support emerging brands in their operational growth journeys.
As an attendee, we hope you will find helpful educational sessions, networking and advisor opportunities, and answers to your immediate questions for the operational needs that brought you here today. And be sure to expand your reach by utilizing Braindate (available today in the EBS, and tomorrow in the Braindate/First Timer’s Lounge at PACK EXPO) as well as checking out PACK EXPO tomorrow through Wednesday.
And finally, as an attendee you are now an official member of the Emerging Brands Alliance. We hope to hear from you throughout the year – we would love to get feedback on today’s event and to hear more about your brand’s journey!

MORNING SESSION
10:20 a.m. Sunday, October 23, 2022
Preparing to Commercialize and Scale
Scaling is the repeated commercialization of products as volume and velocity realities change. Commercialization is the synergy of raw materials, processing, and distribution that helps deliver the intended consumer experience with the product. Production methodologies change dramatically at various scales. Materials are sourced from different suppliers with numerous packaging and storage options. Order fulfillment and logistical best practices for optimal costs change as quantities change and speed & reliability of shipments improves. In the end, an organization is in a continuous state of flux as it grows sales over time, but systematic improvement can be baked into the processes of an organization, if leadership is intentional about it. In this session, a summary of commercialization and scaling considerations is presented with anecdotes to demonstrate best practices or entertaining near successes.
In this session, you will learn:
• How to prepare your product for working with a larger production scale
• How to develop your supply chain to reduce COGS
• How to analyze your operations for scalability
• How to automate continuous improvement
MORNING SESSION

Labeling Crash Course
Many parts of food, dietary supplement and other products’ labeling are dictated by regulations, and though other parts are voluntary, all need to meet certain requirements. It’s important to understand and comply with those requirements so that you can help avoid problems from regulators or from private class action lawsuits.
This lively talk from prominent attorney Eric Greenberg will:
• Quickly summarize the kinds of information product labels require
• Offer some practical advice about ensuring yours are compliant
• Highlight some common pitfalls to avoid, to help protect you from class action lawsuits
Plus, Eric will be available to answer any questions you may have.
MORNING SESSION

Launch Your Brand with Sustainable Packaging Baked In
Paul and Matt discuss case studies on emerging brands’ attitudes and experience with sustainable packaging.
In this session, you will learn:
• Your package should organically co-evolve with your product from the start, from the first idea, and as the product is developed, to launch.
• If sustainability is a goal for your packaging or your brand, it should be an initial consideration. It’s harder to add later on.
• Packaging IS the product, so consider the whole system together—product, primary package, and secondary package.
• Don’t let perfection be the enemy of the good. Goals for 100% recyclable packaging in the future shouldn’t discourage you from 50% recyclable today.
• Maintain the iterative approach to packaging—you’re never finished. Keep this in mind with MOQ and supply inventory.
• Don’t forget the omnichannel. Consider retail, D2C, and 3rdparty e-commerce like Amazon. Have a plan.

• Top reasons to make it yourself
Real world examples so those reasons sink in

How to Translate a Brand Promise into Packaging (or, Why a Healthy Dose of Ignorance is a Good Thing)
How do you think like a consumer and create a brand experience through the ultimate touchpoint of your product, your packaging? And how can you map the desired customer journey for your products and overcome operational obstacles along the way?
In this session, you will learn:
• How to strive for brand intent throughout the operational process.
• How to create an emotional connection between consumers and your brand.
• How to create a relationship with your consumer beyond the ‘first date’ from 50% recyclable today.

The Six Traits of Highly Successful Emerging Brand/Contract Manufacturing Relationships
Why do some emergent brands successfully partner with external manufacturing and packaging firms while others struggle or completely fail? Why have some relationships flourished post-Covid, while others have struggled or flopped? To answer these and similar questions, we will delve into the six traits of highly successful emergent brand/contract manufacturing relationships. With a nod to Stephen Covey, we will look at both the specifics and the fundamentals of successful relationships, as well as a few flameouts. While we can’t name names, we will dig deep into the best practices on both these emergent brands and contract manufacturing partners. We’ll wrap up by looking at what both emergent brands and their contract manufacturing partners can do to increase the value of these vital and evolving supply chain relationships.
Carl’s work is based on his findings in the Contract Packaging Association State of The Industry Report and over 25 years of working with many of the industry’s most successful contract manufacturers.
Exclusive: Participants will also receive The Melville Group’s white paper, The Six Traits of Highly Successful Brand/Contract Manufacturing Relationships.

CPG Knowledge Exchange: Lessons Learned Along the Way
Join us for an educational panel discussion between brand visionaries in various stages of growth, to hear their journey and what they’ve learned along the way. The session will be moderated by Tom Egan, VP of Industry Services for PMMI, who will ask the key question: “What is one thing you know now that you wish you knew when you started?”
• What important steps do new brands forget?
• The decision to self-manufacture, or to use a CM&P – what goes into it?
• Packaging – what drives your choices?

Candice Crane
Founder / CEO, Petal Sparkling BotanicalsVisionary founder & CEO of Petal, Candice Crane, plays supermom to three rosy-cheeked rebel girls, wife to her soulmate and lady boss in the workplace. Although raised in Chicago, Candice’s roots take her back to her birthplace, South Africa, where she spent summers surrounded by the beautiful landscape and her amazing family. The idea for creating a line of sparkling botanical beverages was inspired by her two grandmothers and their love for tea. Her grandmother, René, a true rebel who ran away at sixteen to marry the man of her dreams, often sipped rose petal tea and always served different types of teas at afternoon teatime. Grandmother Zelda sewed her own enchanting floral tea blends into sachets. They planted the seeds for Candice to become the botanical alchemist she is today, dedicated to honoring all the florals in the natural “queendom”.
When Candice’s vision blossomed into action, she decided to bottle up her own botanical blends, add some sparkles, and share their goodness with the world. In 2017, she drew on her background in production and marketing and founded Petal, an organic sparkling beverage company focused on organic goodness – to celebrate the rebels and romantics who inspire her – and to empower women everywhere to make their own dreams come true.
