WELCOME LETTER
Welcome to PACK EXPO East 2024
O
n behalf of the PMMI Media Group and Packaging World magazine, President David Newcorn and I would like to welcome you to PACK EXPO East 2024. We’re bringing the positive momentum generated at last fall’s PACK EXPO Las Vegas to Philadelphia, eager to connect at PACK EXPO East’s largest edition to date. In 2022, PACK EXPO East brought a sense of returning to form, having weathered the challenges that marked the preceding years. The show’s growth as we gather once again in Philadelphia, now hosting 7,000 industry professionals and over 400 exhibitors, is a testament to our industry’s resilience. The Northeastern United States is home to nearly one-third of the nation’s top CPGs, making it a vital area to serve when it comes to packaging and processing innovation. This show’s regionality brings that innovation to your doorstep. Instead of a select few flying out to Las Vegas or Chicago, your whole team can take an easy drive or train ride to see machinery first-hand, find dependable packaging solutions, and access world-class educational and networking opportunities. “PACK EXPO East brings unparalleled value to manufacturers in this region and beyond. This show provides attendees an up-close view of the latest packaging and processing solutions, an opportunity to make new connections, and personalized help for their biggest manufacturing needs,” says Jim Pittas, president and CEO, PMMI. “PACK EXPO East’s convenient location makes it a must-attend event for packaging and processing professionals in the region seeking to improve and grow their operations.” For seasoned PACK EXPO East attendees and newcomers alike, this year’s show brings plenty of new features to be excited about. The Industry Speaks stage (Booth 1653) makes its Philadelphia debut this year, hosting experts from various industry verticals as they address hot topics and industry trends. That’s in addition to the Innovation Stage (Booth 1153), where exhibitors will share breakthrough technologies, innovative applications, and proven approaches in 30-minute seminars throughout the day. This show is as much about the people as it is the latest technology. Workforce challenges have become commonplace in the 2020’s, but PACK EXPO East is here to help. Be sure to check out the Workforce Development Pavilion or the Certified Trainer Workshop for indispensable resources to help grow your workforce and develop your existing staff and employees to keep them engaged and feeling valued. Watch out for tomorrow’s industry leaders making their way through the halls, too. We’re getting students involved and excited about packaging and processing careers with a James Bond- or Mission Impossible-style, “mission-based” scavenger hunt on the show floor. Now for the main attraction—this is your chance to see cutting-edge technology in action, meet representatives from top suppliers and share your latest project directly with them, and find solutions for your company that may have not even been on your radar. Exhibitors, that goes for you, too. What better place to connect with local CPGs of any size and find that next great working relationship? The exhibitor interest, as measured in occupied floor space, at PACK EXPO East 2024 compared to previous shows underscores the industry’s eagerness to come together and explore the latest technologies. It further proves what we know from shows past; face-to-face, personalized interactions are crucial for finding innovative solutions and staying ahead of industry demands. I won’t dig into every detail on what’s ahead for you in the show – that’s what the next few pages are for. As for the vendors you’re hoping to see, flip to page 10 for a full listing. Dave and I are thrilled to be back in Philadelphia to catch up with you all and see the industry’s east-coast sector in action. Fitting for the birthplace of America, let’s make it one for the books. Enjoy the show! –Matt Reynolds

2024 Packaging Trends Fortold by 2023 AmeriStar Awards Twenty-four professional and five student submissions were selected as recipients of the 2023 AmeriStar Award, a design competition in the packaging industry produced by the Institute of Packaging Professionals (IoPP). These cutting edge packs are predictive of trends we see playing out at a larger scale in 2024 and beyond.
A
panel of judges from diverse packaging industry segments evaluated package entries across 17 categories for professional and student awards (find student award winners at pwgo.to/8040). Annie’s, a General Mills brand, came away with the program’s prestigious Best in Show for an evolving application that certainly has roots in sustainability, but not at the expense of other key elements like product protection, a nifty appearance, and user-friendly convenience and function. This multi-pronged approach seems to be a permeating theme among this year’s winners—sustainability might be king, but brands and their suppliers are moving the ball forward on multiple fronts, all at once. These are the winners of the 2023 Professional AmeriStar Awards.
1
Best in Show Annie’s Certified Compostable Printed Shelf Stable Mac & Cheese Cup (1) from General Mills—Judges
say that this cup revolutionizes single-use packaging with technical innovation. Using wet molded fiber that’s not traditionally used for shelf-stable products, it equals polypropylene thermoform in functionality. Advanced features include direct flexographic printing of high-quality graphics, grease and water protection, and an improved sustainability profile (more on that below). An enhanced consumer experience via user-friendly design includes improved convenience, comfort, and heat retention. Facebook research guided a consumer-focused communication strategy, highlighting the cup’s appealing look and emphasizing its eco-friendly benefits. Initially launched in March 2021, the package continues to improve based on real-world feedback, earning it a Best in Show award now in 2023. In addition to its Best in Show win, this cup also earns a nod in the Sustainable category (other winners listed on page

38) for addressing consumer demands for eco-friendly packaging. By replacing traditional thermoformed PP cups with molded fiber technology, the company reduced its carbon footprint by 45%. The cup also features a renewable spray coating for grease and water resistance. The compostable nature of the cup eliminates the need for rinsing, providing an environmentally friendly disposal option. Plus, the clever marketing strategy emphasizes the cup’s paper-like appearance and environmental benefits. The pack exemplifies technical advancement on several levels, from form, to function, to sustainability.
Cosmetics Bobbi Brown Luxe Lipstick Repack from Estée Lauder Companies (ELC)—Deserving of an AmeriStar award for its technical and eco-friendly excellence, this package’s modern design is inspired by the NYC skyline. With sleek, sharp lines and a visually elongated form, the package elevates the lipstick’s appearance. Notably, it prioritizes sustainability through a refillable, all-aluminum, and magnet-free mechanism, featuring 90% Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) content in the outer cap and base parts. This is another instance of packaging designers working with multiple goals in mind, and more importantly, delivering on several of them at once.
Design Excellence Sharpie Ultimate Collection Pack from Newell Brands and WestRock—This collection pack reimagines packaging with technical brilliance, judges say. Bold, bright, and reusable, it highlights upgraded materials, hinged wings, and a striking design to enhance the user experience. Its unique shape and premium structure create a powerful shelf impact, effectively conveying the category giant Sharpie brand.

Here, an innovative redesign enhances the user experience by simplifying smartphone screen protector installation—

It serves as a 360deg marketing billboard while ensuring product protection, making it a deserving winner of an AmeriStar award in the sustainability category. Visit pwgo.to/8043 to read Packaging World’s coverage of this pack.

PACKAGE DESIGN PACKAGING DESIGN TRENDS
Pack Designers Eye Peach Fuzz, Pantone’s 2024 Color of the Year At a time of turmoil in the world, pack designers should consider incorporating ‘a compassionate and nurturing shade conveying a heartfelt kindness’. Peach Fuzz checks those boxes. By Anne Marie Mohan, Senior Editor

lobal color authority Pantone announced that Pantone13-1023 Peach Fuzz, described as “a velvety, gentle peach whose all-embracing spirit enriches mind, body, and soul,” is the 2024 Pantone Color of the Year. According to the company, at a time of turmoil in many aspects of our lives, our need for nurturing, empathy, and compassion grows ever stronger as do our imaginings of a more peaceful future. It adds that Pantone 13-1023 Peach Fuzz, a warm and cozy shade highlighting our desire for togetherness with others and the feeling of sanctuary this creates, presents a fresh approach to a new softness. “Subtly sensual, Pantone 13-1023 Peach Fuzz is a heartfelt peach hue bringing a feeling of tenderness and communicating a message of caring and sharing, community and collaboration,” it notes. “A cozy peach hue softly nestled between pink and orange, Pantone 13-1023 Peach Fuzz brings belonging and inspires recalibrations and an opportunity for nurturing, conjuring up an air of calm, offering us a space to be, feel, and heal and to flourish, whether spending time with others or taking the time to enjoy a moment by ourselves,” says Latrice Eiseman, executive director, Pantone. “Drawing comfort from Pantone 13-1023 Peach Fuzz, we can find peace from within, impacting our wellbeing. An idea as much as a feeling, Pantone 13-1023 awakens our senses to the comforting presence of tactility and cocooned warmth.” Said by Pantone to be “sensitive but sweet and airy,” Pantone 13-1023 Peach Fuzz evokes a new modernity. The company adds that while centered in the human experience of enriching and nurturing the mind, body, and soul, the color is also a quietly sophisticated and contemporary peach with depth whose gentle lightness is understated but impactful, bringing beauty to the digital world. “Poetic and romantic, a clean peach tone with a vintage vibe, Pantone 13-1023 Peach Fuzz reflects the past yet has been rephrased to have a contemporary ambiance,” it says. The introduction of Pantone 13-1023 Peach Fuzz also marks the 25th anniversary of the Pantone Color of the Year program. First introduced by the Pantone Color Institute in 1999 with the Pantone Color of the Year, Pantone 15-4020 Cerulean Blue, the Pantone Color of the Year captures the global zeitgeist, serving as an expression of a mood and an attitude on the part of the consumer. Through the years, the Pantone Color of the Year pro-

gram has become a globally iconic cultural touchstone, drawing attention to how what is taking place in our global culture is reflected and expressed through the language of color. According to Pantone, the Color of the Year selection process requires thoughtful consideration and trend analysis. To arrive at the selection each year, Pantone’s color experts at Pantone Color Institute comb the world looking for new color influences. This can include the entertainment industry and films in production, traveling art collections and new artists, fashion, all areas of design, and popular travel destinations, as well as new lifestyles, playstyles, and socio-economic conditions. Influences may also stem from new technologies, materials, textures, and effects that impact color, relevant social media platforms, and even upcoming sporting events that capture worldwide attention. Since 1999, Pantone’s Color of the Year has influenced product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home furnishings, and industrial design, as well as product packaging and graphic design. Commenting on the use of Pantone 13-1023 in packaging and multimedia, Pantone says that the color “warmly welcomes,” inviting consumers to reach out and engage, making it an enticing shade for a variety of products from food and beverage to cosmetics and accessories. Adds the company, “Inspiring thoughts of sweet and delicate tastes and scents, Pantone 13-1023 Peach Fuzz tempts the tastebuds with thoughts of delectable fruits and delicious fruits that continue to please.” PW PACKAGING WORLD
