The Biggest PACK EXPO International Yet, and Your Strategy to Conquer It
Welcome back to the Windy City, and to the largest packaging and processing event in the world this year. Energy around the show has only grown through 2024, culminating in the largest PACK EXPO International to date. Over 2,600 exhibiting suppliers and vendors across 1.3 million net sq ft of show space are ready to help you nd your next breakthrough solution. With over 40 vertical markets covered, it’s everything you need and more. Such a massive show can be overwhelming without a solid plan, so Dave and I want to share a few tips to prime you for success.
• Start right here. One of your best tools to navigate PACK EXPO International is in your hands right now. Flip to page 4 for our Show Preview, a comprehensive guide of everything new and noteworthy at the show. That includes opportunities to learn the latest insights from the industry’s biggest players at new stages like Sustainability Central and Emerging Brands Central. Don’t miss the tried-and-true favorites like the Innovation Stages and Industry Speaks sessions as well. Wondering when and where it all takes place? You’ll nd QR codes for the latest, up-to-date schedules of those educational stages and more on page 13. The same goes for our exhibitor list: access the QR code on page 6 and walk to that next booth with con dence that your information is on point. Scan the QR codes with your smartphone’s camera app for easy access. If you’re looking for a quick bite to eat, the perfect place to impress a client, or even the best spots to catch a big game after the show (go Bears, by the way), our Chicago staff has you covered. Find local recommendations for the best restaurants and bars in town in our Chicago Foodie Guide on page 16. And nally, starting on page 26, nd company pro les and detailed information about exhibiting suppliers with whom you might just nd yourself doing business.
• Your smartphone is your greatest tool. Make sure you download the PACK EXPO International Mobile App to your smartphone. It’s an all-in-one tool at your ngertips to keep you informed and organized throughout showtime in Chicago. You can also visit www.packexpointernational.com on your phone, laptop, computer, or any device, to view oor plans, search exhibitors, and more. My Show Planner will help you to keep track of new additions and old favorites, check the schedule of booth activities, add itinerary sessions, and plan your routes around the show. All those online tools are also available directly on the App. And through technological magic, any plans you create with My Show Planner online will automatically sync to the PACK EXPO International Mobile App.
• Plan ahead and get organized. Now that you’re equipped with this Showcase and My Show Planner, it’s up to you to make the most of the show. We suggest you prioritize what you want to see, who you want to visit, and where their booths are located. It can get tough to ping pong your way through back-to-back booth visits across the show oor—remember it’s 1.3 million square feet. Take it easy on yourself by using these tools to approach the show strategically. The pavilions at PACK EXPO International are a big help in this regard, since they physically concentrate similar topics and subject matter. Again, My Show Planner is your friend: use it to plan your day and carry it around with you via the Mobile App.
• The best nds happen by surprise. Follow these tips, and you’ll have a sound strategy for a successful show. But be sure to build in some time to wander, see where your interest will lead you, and allow inspiration to strike. It might even come from a technology or innovation that’s completely outside of your industry or product range. Major events like PACK EXPO International are melting pots of the industry’s latest ideas, and the perfect place to get creative with new solutions for your operation.
Dave and I are excited to see you there. PW

Chicago has a diverse food scene that offers everything from Michelin-starred fine dining to iconic deep-dish pizza. In this Guide, we provide staff recommendations from those who know Chicago, great sports bars to catch a game, and even some of the spots featured on the TV show “The Bear.”
Dave Newcorn, President, PMMI Media Group
If you or your clients are adventurous eaters and are secure enough in your personhood to leave the comfort and safety of a giant slab of meat, then I can suggest three upscale places located downtown that will have your clients admiring your Chicago dining savvy.
The rst is a French Vietnamese place called Le Colonial, 57 E. Oak St., an easy walk from Michigan Avenue. It’s got a great ambience, and the food is varied, accessible and delicious. The entire menu is in English so you won’t be struggling to order something unpronounceable. The portions are perfectly sized, so you will walk away neither hungry nor painfully stuffed. Pro tip: If you arrive early, sneak upstairs to the second level for a drink at the bar.
If you equally favor sushi and Mexican, you must go to Tanta, 118 W. Grand, an upscale Peruvian fusion restaurant located at right
in the center of downtown, a convenient walk to many hotels. The food tastes like the love child of an upscale Japanese and Mexican restaurant. There are two oors, and both are great dining experiences, including a private dining room. I remember their drinks being fabulous and their appetizers being even better. They offer no less than four different kinds of ceviche. Go ahead, try them all, you’re on an expense account.
If your clients are meat-free, grab reservations at Planta Queen, 413 N. Clark, a pan-Asian take on plant-based dishes. It tastes like a fusion of Thai and Japanese food if it were imbued with a PhD. The tastiness and complexity of the sauces are matched only by the varied textures and freshness of each dish. The atmosphere is equal to the upscale menu, making it perfect for entertaining. Even though I eat meat, I like going here whenever I can.

If you’re willing to trek north to Lakeview, mfk., 432 W. Diversey Pkwy, and Chilam Balam, 3023 N. Broadway, are two Michelin Bib Gourmand restaurants you don’t want to miss! Both provide intimate dinner environments, hospitable service, and dynamic avor. mfk.’s food is in the style of Spain’s Catalan & Basque coastal regions. Small plate/family style, I recommend their croquettes, seared scallops, and deos (featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives!). Chilam Balam is a BYOB restaurant serving Mexican shared plates with a farm fresh twist. You mustn’t leave without trying their ank steak, memelas, or treating yourself to the chef’s dessert of the day! Reservations for both mfk. and Chilam Balam are highly encouraged.
I nd myself at Pilsen Yards, 1163 W 18th, on more nights out than I’d like to admit, and it’s a quick trip from McCormick Place. It has a great variety of Latin street food in a large, trendy space with a year-round heated patio. Try to get a reservation for the speakeasy hidden inside, The Alderman. Also near McCormick is Tapas Valencia, 1530 S. State, a charming spot that offers delicious Spanish fare and a fun $3 tapas menu. Looking for Chicago pizza? Head to Gino’s East, 521 S. Dearborn, for deep dish, or Haymarket Brewery, 737 W. Randolph, for the easier-to-eat tavern style and great beer. Speaking of beer, don’t miss the Guinness Open Gate Brewery, 901 W. Kinzie in the Fulton Market District, which is also a top area for upscale dining (The Publican, Girl & the Goat, and Trivoli Tavern to name a few). Finally, the Chicago staple: Italian beef. Al’s Beef, 1079 W. Taylor, claims to have invented it, and it’s one of the best around.

There are tons of well-reviewed new restaurants growing like weeds out of the pandemic wreckage, but I can’t help but suggest two that have been my go-to spots for out-of-town visitors since I moved to the city 20 years ago. For excellent steak, and a more authentic Argentinian steakhouse than the chains you’ll nd in the Loop, go to the Tango Sur, 3763 N. Southport. I get the Bife Vesuvio, a prime steak stuffed with garlic, spinach, and cheese. Douse it with Chimichurri. Heads up that it’s the one steak they intentionally cook to medium at its rarest, but it’s prime steak. For my money, that’s the best meal in the city, and my spot for any special occasion. And brook no substitute for the best deep dish—well, more like pan—pizza in the city. It’s Pequod’s, 2207 N. Clybourn. Yes, the crust is supposed to be like that (caramelized, not burned). I suggest limiting yourself a couple of toppings—they pile them on in such a way that the pizza gets pretty busy, pretty fast. A true gut-buster.

Oliver’s, 1639 S. Wabash, blends the charm of Hollywood’s golden age with a 1930’s-inspired ambiance, complete with plush velvet seating and vintage art. The menu is a mix of classic and modern dishes, offering everything from juicy steaks to fresh seafood, veggie options, and delicious desserts. As for the cocktails, Oliver’s serves creative takes on the classics, making it the perfect place to relax with a drink. If you’re in the mood for a cozy meal, de nitely give it a try!
Claudia Smith, Event Operations Manager
A stylish departure from a traditional steakhouse, Bavette’s Bar & Boeuf, 218 W. Kinzie, embraces French air without the formality, blending ne dining with unabashed fun. Best Wagyu burger you’ll ever have. Bar Mar, 120 N. Wacker, is a true celebration of the bounty of the sea, with modern takes on classics you know and love, festive cocktails, and a bright, beautiful space that interweaves the nautical with the elegant. La Grande Boucherie, 431 N. Dearborn, blends the ambiance of an indulgent steakhouse with a re ned Parisian brasserie charm.
Bea Greeny, Sr. Manager, Media Operations
As a vegan married to a carnivore, dining out can be a challenge. Here are spots that deliciously accommodate both diets! Head to Casa Yari, 3268 W. Fullerton Ave., in Logan Square for Latin fusion. For thin crust pizza, try one of Coal re’s two locations, 1321 W. Grand Ave. in West Town, and 3707 N. Southport Ave. in Lakeview. Don’t want to venture far from the Loop? Françoise Frankie, 222 W. Randolph St., is lovely. Visit Cabra, 200 N. Green St., atop the Hoxton Hotel for city views, or Little Goat Diner (ask for the vegan menu), 3325 N. Southport Ave., both along the Randolph Street ‘Foodie’ corridor.

Let’s take a culinary journey through some of the restaurants featured in “The Bear.”

• Ever, 1340 W. Fulton St.
This ne-dining establishment, highlighted in Season 2 and 3, is Chef Curtis Duffy’s two-Michelin-starred spot, which offers an 8-to-10-course tasting menu over a 2½-hour dining experience.
• After Lounge, 1338 W. Fulton St.
Located next to Ever, The Bear’s Marcus practices pastry arts at this lounge, which is a great place to enjoy small plates, foodinspired cocktails or a meal by Michelin-starred chef Curtis Duffy.
• Ceres Café, 141 W. Jackson Blvd.
In Season 1, Mikey tells the story of a wild night at the bar in the Board of Trade building, the location of Ceres Café, a bar known for its ‘faceless art deco statue of the namesake goddess.’
• The Exchange, 224 S. Michigan Ave.
In a Season 3 ashback, Sydney eats in front of a grand marble staircase in the Exchange’s stunning 8000-square-foot atrium.
• Michael Jordan’s Steak House, 505 N. Michigan Ave.
In Season 1, Marcus cites his love for this site’s maple-glazed bacon, and this is Chicago, so how do we not mention MJ?
• Elske, 1350 W. Randolph St.
Sydney experiments with pasta in Season 2 at this Michelin-starred restaurant, which offers a Scandinavian-inspired tasting menu.
• Kasama, 1001 N. Winchester Ave.
Sydney’s rst stop on her Chicago food tour in Season 2 is Kasama, the world’s rst Michelin-starred Filipino restaurant.

This Jewish deli, seen in a Season 3 montage, offers twists like corned beef burgers and pizza bialys. I’ll have what she’s having.
• Doma, 946 N. Orleans St.
Sydney loves breakfast sandwiches, and this Croatian cafe has aplenty. Syd is seen at Doma, which means home, in Season 3.
Jeremy Allen White (left), Liza Colón-Zayas, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach each won a 2024 Emmy for “The Bear,” a TV show about a family restaurant in Chicago.
• Lao Pen You, 2020 W. Chicago Ave.
Sydney stops here in Season 2 Episode 3 for hand-rolled dumplings in broth, a specialty for this spot, which is owned by two brothers who make cameos throughout the episode.
• Loaf Lounge, 2934 N. Milwaukee Ave.
Marcus’ chocolate cake in Season 1 was made by Sarah Mispagel, Loaf Lounge co-owner and a pastry consultant on the show. And yes, you can order “The Bear Chocolate Cake” by the slice.
• Lou Mitchell’s, 565 W. Jackson Blvd.
In a Season 1 montage, we see doughnuts in the fryer inside this century-old diner, which welcomes patrons with Milk Duds.
• Roeser’s Bakery, 3216 W. North Ave.
Chicago’s oldest family-owned bakery still in the same location is where Marcus went to dream of being a pastry chef in Season 1.
• Margie’s Candies, 1960 N. Western Ave.
Season 2 Episode 3 is named “Sundae” for the dessert Sydney eats at this ice cream parlor owned by the same family since 1933.
• The Green Door Tavern, 678 N. Orleans St.
Visible in several shots, this bar dates back to 1921 and has many of the same xtures from the Prohibition era. For proof, check out The Drifter, the speakeasy hidden under the restaurant.
• Alice’s Lounge, 3556 W. Belmont Ave.
Tina sings her heart out in Season 2 at this karaoke lounge, which is a great place to blow off some steam after PACK EXPO.

For a classic Chicago experience close to many hotels on Michigan Avenue, visit Miller’s Pub, 134 S. Wabash. Established in 1935, this spot has remained a favorite for generations. The menu offers simple but satisfying fare, with traditional American dinners like steak, ribs, and burgers, as well as notable Greek dishes like lamb chops, re ecting the heritage of the three founding brothers. The service is excellent and fast, with waiters in white shirts and ties, evoking a bygone era. Miller’s Pub is lively and boisterous at dinner time and perfect for small groups: their cozy booths t up to four people.

Don’t forget to quench your thirst with their refreshing fruit smoothies or bubble tea. Craving dim sum? MingHin, 2168 S. Archer, is your go-to. Hing Kee, 2140 S Archer, is a favorite for xiolongbao (soup dumplings). For a sweet ending, Mango Mango, 2161 S. If you are looking for higherend places near the South Loop, try Moody Tongue, 2515 S Wabash, or Chicago Firehouse, 1401 S. Michigan Ave. You can’t go wrong with the lobster bisque and carrot cake from Chicago Firehouse. If you need a minute to yourself and want to indulge in a delicious Chicago staple, try Ricobene, 252 W. 26th. Their breaded steak sandwiches are gooey, cheesy, and just plain amazing. For a quick breakfast option on your way to McCormick Place, stop by Tilly Bagel Shop, 34 E Balbo, for great breakfast sandwiches.

Around four years ago, I discovered an unknown Italian restaurant: Volare, 201 E. Grand. I was truly impressed by its quality and authenticity. Upon walking in, the smells of garlic and olive oil permeated the air. My table received complimentary fresh garlic bread, one of the best I’ve ever experienced. For drinks I struggled to make a selection from the extensive menu but settled with the classic merlot. For my entrée, I ordered insalata di mare: salad of the sea. The octopus and calamari were grilled to perfection and the lemon sauce was divine! My friends and I wrapped up our meal with a dessert recommendation from our lovely server: a pistachio cannoli.

Can generative AI solve manufacturing’s tribal knowledge problem?
Ever felt the pain of losing a knowledgeable technician or engineer who knows a production line inside and out?
Or discovered that it took hours to fix a production problem – that had already been solved before?
Or written process documents, only to find they weren’t being used?
Discover how manufacturing tribal knowledge can be learned by a new generation of language neural networks that talk with you just like a person.
They automate the creation of detailed process documents, just by watching videos and listening to what engineers and technicians share with them.
They read tens of thousands of pages of your quality documents, equipment manuals, work instructions, process guides, and troubleshooting instructions.
And they connect to your enterprise data systems, analyzing production data for you like a data analyst in your pocket.
Then, every team member gets a personalized intelligent assistant that boosts their productivity by letting them tap into the vast store of knowledge spread throughout your company, in just seconds. Imagine if every team member had the knowledge of your most senior veteran. That’s what SprocketAI, CognitionWorks’ tribal knowledge system, delivers with generative AI.

MCE (Modular Conveyor Express) is dedicated to providing high quality conveyor systems to customers across the country. As part of Nercon, MCE offers industry-leading technical design and a production facility with unmatched manufacturing capabilities; all to provide superior complete conveyor systems quickly and competitively.
For many packaging and manufacturing operations, responsiveness is the key to handling customer demands. Unlike traditional conveyor suppliers, the MCE's line of conveyor is pre-engineered with common components in stock. This allows us to bypass our custom engineering group, saving you time and money. MCE standard equipment typically ships in 3-4 weeks.
By combining lean manufacturing processes with our fabrication experience and purchasing power Modular Conveyor Express is able to quickly ship fully assembled components for quick, easy final installation in your plant.
The MCE family of conveyors includes a variety of conveyor types, sizes, components, and accessories. MCE conveyor modules can be configured to satisfy the functional requirements of most conveying systems for packaging lines and manufacturing operations. And we continue to regularly add new products to the family.
MCE and its partner distributors offer the highest quality pre-engineered conveyor systems with the best value, all while maintaining the flexibility necessary to achieve the customer's goals. It's a commitment to excellence shared by everyone that works on your project. www.modularconveyor.com

Nercon solutions are Designed with a Purpose, which means you get the benefit of top quality design, engineering, and production offering the best value in the industry. Conveyor systems are what we do. In fact, it's the only thing we do so we are industry EXPERTS. Whether it's for food and beverage applications, pet food, pharmaceuticals, or anything else that consumers put in their shopping cart, we tap into our extensive, decades long experience to provide the right solution for your production line.
We look at every project holistically. You might have an idea of the solution you think is right for your line. We'll evaluate that solution and move forward with it if it truly is the best option, or we'll offer an alternative solution that may work better and be more budget-friendly. Once that solution is agreed upon, our expert fabricators and assembly teams take over to build you the most reliable systems available. Unlike other OEMs, Nercon owns the entire project from start to finish, including the manufacturing of a majority of the parts used in your system. That allows us to optimize cost, efficiency, and lead times because we're not waiting for all the components to be delivered from outside vendors. That also means we will stand behind our solutions. If we designed it, engineered it, manufactured the components, assembled it and tested the final solution including the controls, we have no doubt you will have a solution that will last. www.nerconconveyors.com

VDG is the world’s leader in the design and manufacturing of drum motors for belt conveyors, with a strong focus on safety, reliability, and longevity. VDG adheres to a simple principle: provide reliable belt drive solutions to the material handling and food processing industries through innovation, continuous research and development, and precision manufacturing. Manufacturing in-house in the USA and Canada since 1985, using cutting-edge production technology and automation, VDG ensures product quality, short lead times, and after-sales service.
The VDG Drum Motor is a one-component conveyor drive that has all drive components, including the new premium-efficiency electric motor, gear reducer, and bearings, enclosed inside the drive drum, increasing mechanical and electrical efficiency, optimizing space, and promoting operator safety. Designed for 80,000 hours of continuous operation before maintenance, VDG Drum Motors reduce maintenance and operational costs and increase productivity. VDG Drum Motors are available in a range of diameter sizes, belt speeds, horsepower, and industryspecific options and features to suit various belt conveyor applications.
VDG’s patented IronGrip™ lagging increases the durability and lifespan of the lagging and the conveyor belt. The IronGrip™ lagging system consists of symmetrically welded steel bars on the outside of the drum with vulcanized rubber lagging inserts between the steel bars. IronGrip™ lagging eliminates uneven belt wear, improves belt tracking, increases belt traction by 40%, and has 5 times longer service life compared to standard lagging.
All-stainless steel SSV Series Drum Motors, designed specifically for food processing and handling belt conveyor applications, drive modular, wire mesh, and monolithic conveyor belts without using sprockets. The belt profile is either machined directly on the drive drum or on the exchangeable profiled sleeve (XP). The profiled sleeve on the SSV-XP Drum Motor can be easily removed and exchanged for another sleeve to match the belt required on the conveyor. Therefore, the same drum motor can be used when switching to another belt for a different type of processing.
All SSV Series Drum Motors feature an IP69K-rated sealing system, withstand up to 3,000 psi washdown pressure, and eliminate crevices that trap food by-products and bacterial harborage, reducing washdown time and water usage by 50%. Belt profiles are available for all major belt manufacturers.
The IntelliDrive™ Drum Motor features new synchronous permanent magnet motor technology, delivering 40% increased electrical efficiency, a wider range of belt speeds without loss of torque, and an increase in electric motor lifespan compared to a traditional external conveyor drive.
