Processing Possibilities
As we head toward the end of 2024, there are still many issues that continue to impact the food and beverage processing industry: the ongoing labor shortage, food safety concerns, and supply chain disruptions, to name just a few.
At this year’s PACK EXPO International in Chicago, you’ll see the latest ideas, equipment, and technology to tackle those issues head-on, along with enough niche solutions for you to customize exactly what you need to help your operation meet your current business goals, and inspire plans for future growth.
PACK EXPO International is an enormous show (every single hall at McCormick Place is filled), so to help processors save time, the Processing Zone returns, located in the upper level of Lakeside Center. Here, you’ll find processing solutions of every kind conveniently grouped together. Also at Lakeside is the Processing Innovation Stage, where you can hear from industry pros about the latest developments in HPP, AI, automation, and much more.
Other zones at the show that are must-visit for manufacturers include the Confectionary Pavilion (South Building), where you can see the newest advancements in candy processing, including aeration, batch refining, shaping, cluster production, and other candy-making technologies.
Emerging Brands Central (West Building) is where startups and those looking to scale up production for the first time can hear from industry experts about how new companies can strategize and execute growth. And, the Logistics Pavilion (North Building) is where you’ll find equipment and technology aimed at solving many of the supply chain issues I alluded to earlier.
Finally, on Tuesday, November 5, at 4 p.m. on the Processing Innovation Stage, we’ll announce the winners of our annual Manufacturing Innovation Awards (MIA), and our Sustainability Excellence in Manufacturing Awards (SEMA). This year’s finalists include Bob’s Red Mill, Conagra Brands, and SunOpta for SEMA, and Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Riverbend Meats, and Taylor Farms for MIA. After the awards are announced, we’ll have a reception in the same space, so attendees will have plenty of time to network with their peers in the industry. I hope to see you there!

System Square’s advanced X-Ray technologies represent the pinnacle of imaging innovation. These systems offer exceptional clarity and detail for a wide range of applications and detect foreign material that cannot be found by conventional inspection systems. This innovative technology will redefine the landscape of inspection and imaging with unparalleled precision and performance.
NTRODUCING The SXM2 Series High Resolution Dual-Energy X-Ray Inspection Systems
The SXM2 series is equipped with high-precision Dual-Energy sensors and ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE which allows processing of two overlapping images in one inspection. The combination of this inspection method and sensor technology yields images with higher contrast and crisp resolution, giving the system the capability to find extremely small contaminates consistently within the most difficult products. In addition to its precision inspection abilities, the system comes standard with a visual inspection assist function for easy contaminate location/removal and boasts an excellent hygienic design for easy cleaning.
NTRODUCING The SXS2 Series X-Ray + Optical Seal Inspection Systems
The SXS2 series brings two highly effective technologies together, X-Ray and Optical sensors, to work as one powerhouse unit with ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. By doing so, these systems can not only be used as an X-Ray machine for foreign object detection or to confirm the package's relative weight, dimensions, product shape, defect, or total area, but it also performs as an extremely precise package seal monitoring system. By overlaying both X-Ray and Optical images, the SXS2 can see seal contamination from liquids and solids in trays and flexible packaging - even through printed, colored, and aluminum films. With their intuitive operating systems and versatility, System Square's X-Ray Seal Inspection Systems will lead the US market in packaging defect identification.
We believe the combined technical excellence of System Square and ProSpection Solutions' unparalleled customer support and industry knowledge will revolutionize the way we utilize X-RAY technology in the US market.

Urschel is centrally located in the heart of the United States in Northwest Indiana. Exclusively designed by Urschel to assist Urschel CC Slicer customers, meet the new production-proven RockRepeller™ Impeller. Rocks and stones in potato processing cause lost production time. Urschel offers the new patent-pending impeller to reduce potatoes and headaches. Urschel customers implementing the RockRepeller have identified many benefits: less downtime, increased production, and increased line flow rates. In addition, customers have reported a reduction in parts with three times fewer knife holders and spare replacements; minimized damage to knife parts and cutting heads to promote overall increased cost-savings.
The new Comitrol® Disc Mill 380 (DM380) is ideal for processing nuts in small batches or high-volume continuous production. The unique disc plate design and adjustable gap setting allow for a wide variety of nuts to be processed. The machine reduces whole/split nuts into a flowable nut paste or nut butter. Butter texture is controlled through the plate gap adjustment. The DM380 can be employed as a high-capacity pre-mill in conjunction with one of the Comitrol Processor machines to produce a smooth finished product. The DM380 may also be used on its own to produce coarse to fine products including ‘homestyle’ nut butter.

HIGH SHEAR MIXER
Silverson Machines’ FMX10 has been developed to bridge the gap between the laboratory scale FMX5 powder/liquid mixer and the production-scale Flashmix range. The FMX10 provides a simple, effective, and hygienic means of powder/liquid mixing on a small scale, with a batch size of up to 50 liters, depending on viscosity. The mixer recirculates liquid from the vessel, and powder is loaded into the stainless-steel hopper. Once the powder feed valve is opened, the powder is drawn into the high-velocity liquid stream, with the ingredients coming into contact with each other just prior to the mixer’s high shear rotor/stator workhead. A brief period of recirculation results in an agglomerate-free, homogeneous dispersion in a matter of minutes. Different powder feed hopper designs are available to assist with the ow of more cohesive powders. Featuring the Silverson pumping rotor design, the FMX10 is also able to process higher viscosity mixes.
