“To move forward, it is essential to have a clear direction in mind.

FORWARD

PROGRESS

Advanced healthcare projects. At PMMT, we work each and every day on what is most important to us: individual wellbeing. Continuous research and innovation drive our momentum in a single direction: developing innovative hospitals and healthcare devices without compromising on efficiency, sustainability, continuous improvement and quality of life. The excellent added value that our advanced healthcare projects offer has made us a leading consultant in the sector. BICYCLE In the 1970s, Scientific American magazine published an article about a study measuring the movement efficiency of several species on the planet, including humans. How many calories per kilometre did each species consume during movement? Condors were crowned the most efficient. Humans were quite low in the ranking. However, when assessing humans on a bicycle, we rose into first position, way ahead of condors. Thanks to our intelligence and imagination, humans are capable of creating tools that exponentially increase our innate abilities, a key factor in evolution and progress. 8

progress

The hospitals of tomorrow

At PMMT, we design and develop hospitals and healthcare devices that stay one step ahead of the industry. In addition to the essential values that a solid hospital must fulfill (easily expandable and adaptable to future changes, comfortable spaces with maximum natural light, optimal functional design, efficient technology management, reference equipment, energy savings, etc.), at PMMT, we include a series of advanced values in our hospitals to convert them into unique projects.

These values, exclusive to PMMT, mark the difference between a solid hospital and a hospital of tomorrow.

Flow mathematics applied to the efficiency of patient, staff and supply mobility.

A Clear Code clinic, a clinic with values that promote universal access.

A building that heals, thanks to the use of innovative materials and spatial design that offer health benefits.

A 0 Energy Hospital, which consumes the same amount of energy as it produces.

11

progress

Values

Service orientation We are a service provider. We believe that architecture is a tool to resolve problems, not to pad out architects’ CVs. This approach, open to constant collaboration, easy and harmonious communications, in search of the optimum solutions, makes it possible for us to successfully take on any project anywhere on the planet.

Customer service We commit to offering our customers comprehensive, high-quality service with efficient and fast response times no matter the circumstances. PMMT will always be part of the solution, never the problem. 13

progress

Quality architecture The pursuit of continuous improvement is essential for developing highquality architecture. We commit to modern, contemporary and contextualised architecture that seeks to reach a compromise between aesthetics, functionality and durability.

Collaborative orientation At PMMT, we strategically include all the stakeholders of any given project (internal employees and external collaborators, suppliers, institutions, public administrations, the general public, etc.) in search of a cross-cutting collaboration that promote the creation of the best solutions for the project at hand.

Loyalty of our team We are committed to working for the professional and personal well-being of all our collaborators as a cohesive and committed group, above and beyond individual interests and objectives.

Commitment to sustainability A commitment that we have made in the broadest possible sense, not only in terms of respect for the environment, but in our unwavering approach to the processes based on the efficiency that affect the design, construction, maintenance and possible changes in building usage.

R+D 14

Investment in innovation We invest a significant amount of our energy and our resources in creativity, research and development with a view to optimising, evolving and improving hospital architecture and thus offering better solutions to our customers and to society as a whole.

Commitment to individuals We work to promote the happiness, health and the quality of life of the general public. We develop products and solutions that ensure that all individuals participate in society under equal conditions, committing to inclusive environments in which nobody suffers from discrimination, regardless of any disability or limitation that they may or may not have, 15

Team

Collective intelligence Thanks to the experience and knowledge of our team, formed by professionals of the highest standard, and contributions from a range of exceptional collaborators, we can successfully overcome the challenges that we are faced with. Another essential element that allows us to successfully develop each project is our organisational structure. The team is distributed akin to a football team, with each player occupying the position that most benefits the team as a whole. By removing hierarchies, processes are more efficient and everybody’s involvement increases, with all parties being aware that they have an essential part to play. By combining collective talent, creativity flows and ideas multiply exponentially. In a work environment like this, innovation is guaranteed.

LOCAL HOSPITAL Salou, Tarragona, Spain. This building is an innovative model in the healthcare sector, located between a primary healthcare centre and a conventional hospital. The design had to take two basic premises into account: on the one hand, it addresses the connection between the existing building and the proposed expansion in such a way that they would remain united and, on the other, it ensures that construction work did not interfere with the running of the centre. Contest: First prize Customer: CatSalut, Catalan Health Service. 18

19

“When something is designed to address a need, it ends up becoming something beautiful.”

THINKING And even more so if it contributes to promoting the happiness, health and quality of life of the general public. This philosophy inspires our work and leads us to invest a significant amount of our energy and our resources in creativity, research and development.

INNOVATION Our research projects focus on the development of four types of innovation.

Conceptual Industrial Architectural Technological

• 30 % of our team is exclusively dedicated to research. • We collaborate on R&D&I with private and public institutions. • We have developed more than 10 research projects. • Our research has resulted in the company registering its own patents.

20

NUMBER 0 The concept of zero is one of humanity’s most wonderful creations, given that it simplified the documenting of numbers and facilitated arithmetic calculations. Its origins can be dated back to 700 BC, although it would not arrive in Europe until much later, in the 9th or 10th century, introduced by the Arabs, who also provided figures to represent the numerals of the decimal system used to this day. Zero is the basis of mathematics and is essential to scientific calculations. Without zero, there would be no decimal or negative numbers and modern science, technology, computing and even architecture would not have developed as they have done. 21

innovation

01

Conceptual innovation

People and health, our source of inspiration. The purpose of conceptual innovation is the pursuit of new areas of knowledge that can generally be applied to the field of health, such as sustainability, universal access or process efficiency. The development of this kind of innovation tends to be long term and requires a high level of multidisciplinary teamwork. At PMMT, we apply our innovations to the projects that we design and develop, in addition to placing our knowledge at the disposition of existing projects through our consultancy service.

Innovation is thinking about and for everybody.

Clear Code Architecture

CLEAR CODE ARCHITECTURE

An all-inclusive space Clear Code Architecture® is the result of intensive research, in which we examine the needs of all disabilities and limitations in terms of architectural space, interlinking these needs with different spaces and thus creating a parametric method that makes it possible to objectively evaluate the level of universal access to an environment. Clear Code Architecture® leads the way towards a more accessible, and therefore more equal, society.

The world is home to more than 7.2 billion people.

More than 15 % of these people suffer some form of disability.

40 % of the world’s population experiences some form of impediment in the use of their physical environment.

At some stage in our lives, we will all suffer from or generate some form of limitation in the use of our physical environment..

We have developed the first universal access manual that methodologically guarantees equality to everybody, regardless of any disability or limitation that an individual may suffer from, in the use of our physical environment. 24

FRIENDLY DESIGN

Healing environments Architecture has the capacity to heal. The design of spaces, selected materials, commissioning and maintenance can actively contribute to our health. At PMMT, we examine all these factors that affect the relationship between architecture and health,

classifying, evaluating and sorting them. Our objective is to control these parameters and apply them to our designs so that our buildings actively contribute to the health of those residing therein.

25

innovation

02 ARCHITECTURAL INNOVATION

Advanced healthcare architecture. At PMMT, we seek to innovate by creating new types of building that are capable of serving as benchmarks on account of their objective efficiencies, such as the reduction in turnaround times, maximum efficiency in terms of movement and extreme flexibility, amongst other factors.

Innovating is all about constantly asking ourselves questions.

27

In addition to the parametric hospital, we have developed four innovative architectural products:

FLUID HOSPITAL Maximum flexibility and adaptability to immediate and highly efficient changes and expansions.

SMART HOSPITAL Puyo Hospital, Ecuador. The first hospital built applying this parametric model has received international recognition as an example of smart and effective healthcare architecture.

Maximum efficiency in terms of technical and logistics operations and in the flow of healthcare staff and patients.

Parametric Laboratories Parametric Hospital

A need. A challenge. A reality.

A manual devised to safeguard the design and construction of a flexible and efficient research laboratory.

A state-of-the-art hospital with all facilities, tailor-made to the customer, in less than one year. Aware of the urgent need within some communities for a perfectly equipped hospital with high-quality facilities, we asked ourselves whether, rather than creating a different model of hospital in each case, we could create a single model that could be adapted depending on the circumstances. The answer was “yes. 28

The parametric hospital is the result of an intellectual process based on an in-depth analysis of the metrics and parameters that define highly-complex healthcare facilities such as hospitals. It is an architectural product with a high level of pre-assembly that makes it possible to overlap and harness all processes, reducing turnaround times for the handover of the facility in record time: less than one year.

Burn Units Modular and progressively expandable burn units with outpatient, casualty and inpatient areas.

29

innovation

03

INDUSTRIAL INNOVATION

Designing quality of life The goal of innovation in this sector is to design constructional elements or systems, in addition to industrial design pieces or equipment capable of providing new facilities linked to the world of construction and healthcare. Products committed to society that offer real and effective responses, contributing towards improving individual well-being. We tend to develop this type of innovation as part of collaboration agreements with industry, participating in the creation of products from the beginning or amending products that already exist in our customers’ portfolios.

Innovation is about contributing to the improvement of community life.

“We offer proposals with added value that are committed to efficiency and well-being”

HEALTHCARE

CONSULTANCY

Our extensive experience in and understanding of the development of advanced healthcare architecture projects means that we can offer consultancy services with high added value in this sector. Our proposals seek to optimise efficiency and harness our customers’ resources, whilst ensuring better quality of life for the general public and maximum respect for the environment.

Plasters There are a whole range of frequently used inventions in our daily lives that we do not tend to appreciate on account of their proximity and ordinariness. A clear example of this are plasters: a simple adhesive strip with a sterilised dressing in the middle, which covers and protects small wounds, ensuring the well-being and quality of life of users. Earle Dickson created this small bandage so that his wife could dress her cuts by herself when he was not at home. Johnson & Johnson, the company he worked for, unsuccessfully marketed the invention in 1921. After an excellent marketing strategy that consisted of giving away millions of plasters to boy scout groups throughout the US, sales increased and by 1939, the plaster had become a resounding success. 40

41

CONSULTANCY

FUNCTIONAL 3D PLAN

UNIVERSAL ACCESS

We ensure a high level of efficiency in the implementation of functional plans

We help our customers to ensure the best access conditions for their users

We offer a specialist consultancy in the creation of functional plans broken down by room. The main advantage of working with a team of architects specialising in healthcare is that we can create a product that adapts to the specific needs of each project, rather than offering a more generic and vague proposal. The interdisciplinary collaboration of a team comprising doctors, engineers, land planners and architects ensures 42

that the functional plan facilitates the subsequent acceleration of project time scales, by interactively including different elements of previously carried out architectural studies that have an impact on functionality. By doing so, a more comprehensive and cross-cutting document is obtained that provides our customers with a high level of efficiency and profitability in the implementation of their models.

Thanks to our commitment to innovation, we have made progress in terms of universal access creating the Clear Code ArchitectureŽ method, which makes it possible to precisely and objectively analyse and quantify a centre’s accessibility. This is the result of extensive research on the needs of all those with disabilities and limitations in terms of the architectural

space. We help many companies, through projects and audits, to define a continuous improvement plan in terms of user access to their centres. The implementation of this plan gives these companies a competitive advantage and sets a benchmark in the sector, in addition to going one step further in their corporate social responsibility.

43

CONSULTANCY

Hospital growth models based on different typologies

NATIONAL OR CORPORATE HEALTHCARE NETWORK

We help to define integrated architectural models with their own identity and master plans. The objective of our consultancy work is to provide assistance in the design of building types needed to define a national or corporate healthcare network, an integrated architectural model capable of providing a response at all levels, from the simplest of healthcare centres to large general hospitals. 44

National or corporate healthcare network models require building types capable of merging functional, procedural and space definition criteria in addition to integrating within the framework of a coherent image. They also call for a modern healthcare structure that offers the general public a service of the highest quality.

PARAMETRIC HOSPITAL

SMART HOSPITAL

FLUID HOSPITAL

Only by having comprehensive knowledge of the wide range of healthcare centres that comprise these types of networks is it possible to define a comprehensive, integrated model.

SINGLE-FAMILY HOUSE Barcelona, Spain. The project for this single-family house on a plot on which there was another property posed several challenges. The new construction was due to occupy part of the garden area of the main house and, therefore, two realities had to be taken into account: ensuring the new building had its own identity, whilst being designed to form part of the garden and to blend into the green area, limiting the visual impact of the construction from the main house. Wood and glass were used for the main faรงades of the property and for the perpendicular faรงades as viewed from the main house, we used an innovative system of ceramic fabric to blend into the landscape. 46

ARCHITECTURE

WORKS

We are committed to high-quality architecture based on the pursuit of continuous improvement. Modern, innovative and advanced architecture. Architecture oriented towards improving the general public’s quality of life. Our work, on three continents, primarily involves healthcare projects (hospitals, research centres, health centres and residencies), in addition to other types of buildings for the commercial and educational sectors, in addition to single-family houses and environmentally friendly housing.

Pencils The common pencil was invented thanks to the discovery of graphite leads; this material was then used to create the lead we write with. The first pencils were square wooden bars in which a square graphite lead was slotted into the middle Later, the design of pencils took on a cylindrical form, before eventually assuming a hexagonal shape, which meant they did not roll away. The invention was perfected by incorporating new colours into the lead and a rubber at the tip. In 1915, Japanese businessman Tokuji Hayakawa created the mechanical pencil, which removed the use of wood and the cumbersome process of sharpening the lead. 48

SMART HOSPITAL Luanda, Angola.

66

The design of this high resolution diagnostics clinic seeks to serve as an international benchmark in the field of healthcare. Our objective was to look for an architectural model that would promote management efficiency in a medium-sized hospital facility whilst committing to harnessing internal movement, logistics and its facilities insofar as possible. The Smart Hospital is circular in shape and has a radial organisational system that provides for great flexibility in distributing the hospital’s functions in addition to a clear hierarchy in terms of the different movements therein. The overall simple façade, comprising vertical glass sheets, seeks to convert the building into a brand image. 67 Customer: Private
