Definition of Breast Cancer What is Breast Cancer, and how it forms? Breast cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the breast. It's the second most common type overall, and the most common type among women. According to World Cancer Research Fund, there were over 2 million new cases worldwide in 2018. Breast cancer begins while some cells in breast begin to divide in a strange, fast, uncontrollable way, these cells begin to accumulate in a specific location making a lump called 'Tumor", which in turn begins to grow and spread. Cancer can spread in one or both breasts, it also can spread to another body parts like bones, liver and so on.

From when Breast Cancer begin? Most breast cancers begin in the ducts that carry milk to the nipple (ductal cancers). Some start in the glands that make breast milk (lobular cancers).

Formation of a lump in the breast is one of the symptoms of cancer, are all breast lumps malignant? It's important to know that most of masses form in breast are benign not malignant. But it's also important to know that some of benign breast lumps can increase woman's risk of getting breast cancer. Therefore, when a breast lump is present, it must be diagnoses to find out whether it is benign or malignant, if it turned out that its benign, it should be examined whether it may develop into a malignant tumor in the future or not.

Some people think that breast cancer affects women only, how true is this belief? Breast cancer affects men also, but it's rare, and the reason is due to the presence of breast tissues.

Breast Cancer Risk Factors The exact cause of breast cancer is unclear, but there are factors that may affect your chances of getting breast cancer, but having one doesn't mean that you are guaranteed to get the disease. These factors can be divided into controllable and non-controllable:

Controllable Risk Factors Body weight: it is important to have a healthy diet and a regular exercise because obese people have higher risk to develop breast cancer. Breast implants: silicone breast implants make it harder to detect problems on regular mammograms Not to breastfeed: not breastfeeding may increase the risk of having breast cancer. Hormone treatments: using hormone-based prescription such as hormone replacement therapy for more than five years and taking certain types of birth control pills.

Non-controllable Risk Factors Age: studies show that after the age of 55 a majority of new breast cancer diagnoses come. Sex: being a women is a risk, although men get breast cancer but it is more common in women. Genetics: women who carry certain mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have a higher chance of developing breast cancer. Also the chance increases if a person’s relative has or had breast cancer. Women who already had breast cancer: it is more likely for them to have it again than those who have no history of the disease. Reproductive factors: including having no children, having first child after 30, getting period before age 12 or entering menopause after age 55. Breast density: having dense breasts make a woman at higher risk of having breast cancer and also make it harder to see tumors during mammograms.

Breast Cancer Self-examination Breast self-examination , or regularly examining your breasts on your own, can be an important way to find a breast cancer early, that increases the chance of successful treatment. The importance of breast self-examination is that every woman knows the nature of the shape and texture of her breast. If she feels a sudden and abnormal change, immediately she should go to the doctor. A self-examination should be done once a month, and the best time to do a self-exam is 3 to 5 days after your period ends. There are 5 steps to do a breast self-exam :

Begin by looking at your breasts in the mirror with your shoulders straight and your arms on your hips. Here's what you should look for: Breasts that are their usual size, shape, and color Breasts that are evenly shaped without visible distortion or swelling

If you see any of the following changes, bring them to your doctor's attention: Dimpling, puckering, or bulging of the skin A nipple that has changed position or an inverted nipple (pushed inward instead of sticking out) Redness, soreness, rash, or swelling

Now, raise your arms and look for the same changes.

While you're at the mirror, look for any signs of fluid coming out of one or both nipples (this could be a watery, milky, or yellow fluid or blood).

Next, feel your breasts while lying down, using your right hand to feel your left breast and then your left hand to feel your right breast.

Use a firm, smooth touch with the first few finger pads of your hand, keeping the fingers flat and together. Use a circular motion, about the size of a quarter. Cover the entire breast from top to bottom, side to side from your collarbone to the top of your abdomen, and from your armpit to your cleavage. Follow a pattern to be sure that you cover the whole breast. You can begin at the nipple, moving in larger and larger circles until you reach the outer edge of the breast. You can also move your fingers up and down vertically, in rows, as if you were mowing a lawn. This upand-down approach seems to work best for most women.

Finally, feel your breasts while you are standing or sitting. Many women find that the easiest way to feel their breasts is when their skin is wet and slippery, so they like to do this step in the shower.

movements described in step 4.

My lady , If you feel any unusual mass during the selfexamination, do not feel afraid, and go to the doctor to verify the cause, taking into account that not every mass indicates breast cancer.

Breast Cancer early detection importance Why regular breast cancer screening is so important? Breast cancer is sometimes found after symptoms appear, but many women with breast cancer have no symptoms, so the earlier breast cancer is found, the easier it is to treat, and that's because the breast cancer begins in the milk ducts, but when diagnosis is delayed the cancer spreads outside the breast through lymph vessels or blood vessels and then to the other organs like brain, liver, lungs. Thus, knowing the breast cancer size, its extent and its early detection is the first key in the treatment of breast cancer which increase the proportion of breast cancers identified at an early stage, allowing for more effective treatment to be used and reducing the risks of death from breast cancer.

There are steps you can take to detect breast cancer early when it is most treatable:

Mammography It is an x-ray imaging method used to examine the breast for the early detection of breast cancer, it is the best early detection method for reducing the number of deaths associated with breast cancer, It has been shown to reduce breast cancer mortality by approximately 20%, it is generally not undertaken in patients under 40 years of age (as age is the largest risk factor for breast cancer), however women older than 40 should have mammograms every two years. On the other side women with other risk factors such as a strong family history, gene anomalies or previous breast cancer may have mammograms at an earlier age or be monitored more closely.

Clinical Breast Exam (CBE) It is an examination of both breasts performed by a trained health professional, The woman will not normally have noticed any breast changes before the examination. The examination is focused on detecting changes to the breasts, such as skin changes, nipple discharge, or changes in size or shape, it is an effective method of early detection of breast cancer especially for women less than 40 years old, who do not have regular mammograms, clinical breast examination may be useful, In contrast to women who are over 40 years old where the clinical examination is a complement, not a substituent for mammography.

Breast self-examination (BSE) It is a technique which allows an individual to examine breast tissue for any physical or visual changes, It is often used as an early detection method for breast cancer, It should be done at least once each month beginning at age 18, anf If you notice anything unusual, tell your doctor, in many cases, those changes aren’t cancer, but you need to see your doctor to find out.

Early detection of breast cancer gives women a better chance to get better and get back to their normal lives, so you have to not neglect it and be sure to keep up the date step by step to have a safe life.
