It was in 2018 that we announced Billy Elliot the Musical to be the season closing show for 2020. We were three days away from going into rehearsals when COVID shut everything down on March 13, 2020. That was the last day of Billy Bootcamp - the training process we had embarked upon with the young performers in the show. That afternoon, as we were postponing per- formances (not knowing how long it would last) I had to break the news to those young performers that we were shutting down -- it was heartbreaking.

Here we are five years later finally bringing this show to stage, to Halifax and to Neptune audiences. A huge thank you to our patrons who patiently waited out the entire pandemic to see this show. You will not be disappointed. This show is gritty, dramatic, joyous, challenging and hilarious.

Set in 1984 Britain during one of the most acrimonious industrial disputes in British history – the coal miner strikes. I grew up in the UK during this time. I remember when PM Maggie Thatcher waged war on those miners, and watching the miners’ strikes on the TV news. This tumultuous time period sets the backdrop of the social norms and stereotypes young Billy must challenge on his journey to self-discovery.

Billy Elliot is a beautiful, epic story about one boy struggling to find his place in the world. It’s an uplifting, joyful show about hope, following your dreams and pursuing your passion.

This is a huge production and we have assembled an amazing team of artists on and off stage. 85% of the people involved in this show are Nova Scotian. It’s always great to have local actors, designers, creators and crew engaged on a production who call Nova Scotia home.

Neptune’s 61st season was recently announced and I am so excited about the line-up. Subscriptions are on sale now and are the best way to get the best prices and the best seats.

Capping off an incredible diamond anniversary season, it is a complete pleasure to welcome you to Billy Elliot The Musical. Five years after we first announced this show was coming, the Elton John-scored spectacle is finally here. The dedication and effort that the entire creative team, staff, and crew has put into this show to get it on to the stage is truly commendable. Over this entire season, our talented team has shown their passion and commitment to bringing incredible shows to the stage. Bravo.

As we close this season, we say a heartfelt thank you to Catherine Bagnell Styles for stepping in as our Interim Executive Director for the past 6 months while we conducted a national search for our new ED. We have benefited greatly from

Catherine’s leadership, talent and commitment to Neptune and we are delighted to have her return to the Board of Directors.
