ABOUT THE PLAY Artistic Director Jeremy Webb has written an original holiday musical based on the age-old story of Cinderella, and in the style of the classic British Pantomime.

A pantomime takes a well-known story, such as a fairy tale, and infuses it with extravagant characters, dancing, singing, comedic moments and encourages the audience to get in on the fun.

“There’s a gigantic tradition of the holiday panto in the UK. With whole families going year after year and seeing the show. Each year it’s a different tale.” says writer/ director Webb. “I wanted to bring the tradition to Neptune”

Cinderella tells the story of a young woman who longs for a better life away from her menacing stepsisters.

To help make her dreams come true, an amateur fairy godmother appears and grants her wish to attend the royal ball. Cinderella is then in a race against the clock to try and find her prince before the spell is broken at the stroke of midnight.

Packed full of toe-tapping songs, belly- laughs and fun surprises, this show leaves you with the magical feeling of love and joy.

Scholars cannot seem to agree, but there is anywhere from 340 to 3,000 versions of the Cinderella story in existence in almost every culture in the world. Why does this rags-to-riches tale continue to be explored in books, films, opera, ballet or theatre? I think Cinderella resonates with all of us because of its themes of the power of kindness and not allowing those who mistreat us to define our destiny.

In 2021, there was a national poll done in the UK to decide which pantomime held the top spot in audience’s hearts and Cinderella was named ‘favourite panto ever’. With its colourful characters, dancing mice, a pumpkin coach and a Fairy Godmother, what more could you want!

Pantomime is a very special art form.

Unlike most types of theatre where we sit quietly in the dark, in panto, the audience is encouraged to participate. I hope you will cheer and laugh with us today and spend a couple of hours allowing yourself to be a kid again. If the pandemic taught us anything, treasure this time we collectively get to spend together.

Thank you to my incredible cast, my fellow creative team members, especially my assistant choreographer, Mae Taverner and the staff at Neptune Theatre in every department who have worked so tirelessly on this show. CHAIR’S MESSAGE It is my pleasure to welcome you to our Holiday Production of Cinderella. This show was a smash hit when we debuted it in 2018, and then again in summer of 2019 and we’re thrilled to introduce it to a whole new audience. Whether this is your first, second, or eighth time seeing the show, we appreciate you making us a part of your family’s holiday season.

This opening will be my last as Board Chair. After helping Neptune survive the COVID-19 closures and seeing the building re-open and audiences return in force, I am excited to be passing the baton to Anna Hurshman who takes over in late November. As I look back on my time as Chair, I am incredibly proud of how our entire team managed during these unprecedented times. I also need to thank each and every one of you for your continued support of Neptune Theatre over these four years. Without the support of our audience, patrons and donors, there would be no Neptune.

Speaking of support, this is of course the perfect time of year to donate to the Neptune Theatre Foundation - as a non-profit organization, support from our patrons and community really makes a difference. We employ hundreds over the course of a season from the front of house and box office employees, and actors on stage you see every performance to a full administrative staff and multiple departments of craftspeople and designers. IN MEMORIAM OF PATRICK CLARK PATRICK CLARK (1953-2023) It is with a complex mix of emotions that we dedicate this performance run of Cinderella to the memory of set designer John Patrick Clark who passed away in June of this year after a lengthy illness. Patrick originally worked on Cinderella back in 2018 and we are blessed to see his work on stage posthumously today as this show returns to Neptune’s Fountain Hall.

Patrick was one of Canada’s most distinguished theatre designers whose career spanned five decades working in Canada, the USA, and the UK. He was known for his meticulous attention to detail, his knowledge of history and his sense of beauty. He designed shows for Stratford Festival, Shaw Festival, Soulpepper Theatre Company, Theatre Aquarius, Chicago Shakespeare Company, The Guthrie Theatre (Minneapolis), Neptune Theatre and The Pacific Opera Company and many others throughout his career.

Patrick’s attention to detail was legendary and his immense knowledge of history and style was invaluable to us all. The Neptune crew and creative teams were always thrilled when Patrick was to join us. He was a kind, generous, often soft spoken and sometimes cutting, witty, and wise. We shall miss him.

He had also worked extensively in the U.S. and Europe. He freelances extensively on double bass and electric bass in a diverse range of styles. He’s led his own groups at many music festivals and has performed on over 30 cruise ships.
