Neptune Theatre is located on sacred land that has been the site of human activity since time immemorial. We are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq, and we acknowledge them as the past, present and future caretakers of this land.
As artists, we are grateful to work and build community here. As stewards of culture, we commit to continuing to improve our relations with Indigenous people and upholding values of collaboration and inclusivity in all that we do.
We recommend that masks be worn in our venues. As our theatres place the audience so close to the action on stage, masking helps protect not only audience members but also the actors, who cannot wear masks when performing. By keeping them safe, we all can help prevent COVID-related performance cancellations.
Any videotaping or other video or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited. The use of cameras, cellular phones, paging devices and all other recording devices is strictly prohibited in the theatre. Please ensure all cellular phones and watch alarms are turned off. Neptune Theatre is a scent-free environment.
Neptune Theatre is a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres and engages, under the terms of the Canadian Theatre Agreement, professional Artists who are members of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association. THE MUSIC OF RITA MACNEIL
A MUSICAL CELEBRATION OF CAPE BRETON’S FIRST LADY OF SONG
DEAR RITA is a musical celebration of Rita MacNeil — an iconic Canadian storyteller who invited us to see ourselves in her music. Rita herself said her life story is “something you could pretty well put anyone into. It’s about one person, but so many of us could be there.”
Through her career MacNeil was at the time the best selling country artist in Canada, received five honorary degrees, released 24 albums, won three Juno Awards, a SOCAN National Achievement Award, four CCMA awards, eleven ECMA awards, was inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame and was named to the Orders of Nova Scotia and Canada.
From Rita’s popular hits to the lesser-known songs that made her bandmates cry like babies, DEAR RITA weaves Rita’s lyrics into new perspectives and invites her spirit into the room as her songs live on through our own experiences.
Who is “Rita” in this show? It’s not one person. We all are — everyone on that stage, everyone in the audience, and everyone whose hearts she has touched with the musical prayers of her people.
When Chris Corrigan said he gave my name to Rita MacNeil’s son to create a show about her life, I was thrilled! Chris was guitar player for both my play Tompkinsville and Rita MacNeil herself, even dragging me into Rita’s dressing room in 2012 to meet her. There, Rita gave me a pep talk I never forgot, saying, “Tell the stories of who you are. Tell the stories of where you come from. Someone out there has a wound in the shape of your words.” As a Cape Bretoner, I was too starstruck to respond. Fun fact: I had graduated from Paul McCartney’s university the year before and when Paul gave me my degree, I could not stop talking. But Rita? Now that was a star!
Years after Rita passed, her son wanted to meet with me. I picked a random day at Rita’s Tea Room. Over “the last bowl of soup of the season,” Wade agreed I was the person to write Rita’s story. Both Wade and I didn’t know that would be the last day the Tea Room was open forever. Dear Rita was born as the Tea Room said its final farewell.
When I pitched the Charlottetown Festival, the artistic director asked if I was “tapping his phone.” Turns out that morning composer Mike Ross had pitched a show about Rita. My email came in moments later. Also, Mike and I are old friends who went to theatre school together and he hired me for my first professional show. Now we were co-creating Dear Rita. What could go wrong? Well… it was 2020.
One thing kept me sane: writing. And in 2021, Dear Rita premiered at the Charlottetown Festival. I was in it. Opening night, I had no idea how it went. I walked out the door, and people started clapping and holding their hearts. I was so relieved. Dear Rita next premiered in Cape Breton in 2022 and 728 people stayed to hug me. The best words were from Wade, who said, “Rita would be really proud of this show.”
DEAR RITA just had its Ontario/Newfoundland premieres, and now, we are home in Halifax. I am so grateful to Jeremy Webb for making this happen. Years ago, it was Jeremy who programmed Tompkinsville with EFT, which was co-created by Ian Sherwood and myself, and led to Dear Rita. Now, Ian and I are both in Neptune’s Dear Rita. What you see on stage is the result of years of people supporting each other, creating together, and being part of a strong theatre community. And so, when I think about Dear Rita premiering in Halifax, it’s Rita’s own words that come to mind… “Home I’ll Be.”

Welcome back to Neptune Theatre and to our 2024-2025 Season!
It’s always an exciting time of year, as we embark upon the next twelve months of drama, comedy, and magic. Our staff are standing by, ready to greet you at the door, at our box office, standing by to pour you a refreshing beverage and to show you to your seat. Backstage the crew and the actors are buzzing - ready to bring you theatrical excellence, show after show.
I am thrilled to start this season with DEAR RITA for the month of August. Lindsay and Mike have created a delightful show that utilizes the words and music of Cape Breton musical icon, Rita MacNeil. The cast, under the expert direction of Samantha Wilson, have been a joy to have in the building, as they create this performance for you.
I had the incredible privilege of seeing Rita live on stage for her penultimate performance, hosting the show she was booked to be an unexpected guest. Backstage I was victim to her sharp wit, as she teased me, just before she made a surprise appearance, bringing the packed crowd roaring to their feet. It was a thrilling night and quite electric.
If you enjoy this performance, please spread the word.
I look forward to seeing you back for A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM, KING GILGAMESH, WINTER MOONS, FROZEN and DICKENS’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL and that just gets us to December!
See you at the theatre
Jeremy Webb Artistic Director
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S
Summer in Nova Scotia truly is a special time, and we’re delighted to have you join us to celebrate the life and music of Rita MacNeil - a true ambassador of Nova Scotian culture. This beautiful show highlights both the incredible talent that was Rita, and our artistic community as they bring her story to life.
This production, created by Nova Scotians to honour a beloved national treasure, underscores Neptune’s dedication to showcasing our region’s stories and storytellers on our stage.
Dear Rita is just the start of our 20242025 season and ticket packages are still available!
If you enjoy stories about our corner of the country, I highly recommend including WINTER MOONS and CONTROLLED DAMAGE in your season planning.
I look forward to seeing you at the theatre!
