@NEPTUNETHEATRE
Neptune Theatre is located on sacred land that has been the site of human activity since time immemorial. We are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq, and we acknowledge them as the past, present and future caretakers of this land.
As artists, we are grateful to work and build community here. As stewards of culture, we commit to continuing to improve our relations with Indigenous people and upholding values of collaboration and inclusivity in all that we do.
We recommend that masks be worn in our venues. As our theatres place the audience so close to the action on stage, masking helps protect not only audience members but also the actors, who cannot wear masks when performing. By keeping them safe, we all can help prevent COVID-related performance cancellations.
Any videotaping or other video or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited. The use of cameras, cellular phones, paging devices and all other recording devices is strictly prohibited in the theatre. Please ensure all cellular phones and watch alarms are turned off. Neptune Theatre is a scent-free environment.
Neptune Theatre is a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres and engages, under the terms of the Canadian Theatre Agreement, professional Artists who are members of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association. Neptune Theatre engages professional technicians represented by IATSE Local 680.
Neptune Theatre acknowledges the support of our government partners:
AN EXPERIENCE OF FANTASTICAL DELIGHTS, DOST THOU SEEK, WHERE WONDERS UNFOLD AND DREAMS TAKETH FLIGHT
Love, magic, and mistaken identities are set anew against Prohibition’s shadowed veil, in this reimagined comedic tale.
Mischief and mayhem ensue when four young lovers— Hermia, Lysander, Helena, and Demetrius—flee to the forest, only for Puck the fairy to make both boys fall in love with the same girl. Meanwhile, Puck helps his master, Oberon, play a trick on the fairy queen, Titania, making her fall in love with the abrasive leader of an amateur theatre troupe, whom Puck has transformed into a donkey.
Amidst the confusion, the troupe of hapless actors rehearse a play for the wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta. Misunderstandings and mistaken identities create amusing twists and chaos. In the end, Puck reverses the magic, the two couples reconcile and marry, and the fairies retreat back to the forest.

On behalf of the entire cast and creative team of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, welcome to the theatre and to our adaptation of Shakespeare’s most performed play. You would think the top prize for number of productions would go to a certain Danish prince, or maybe Romeo and his Juliet. But, thinking about it, it’s so logical that Puck, Titania, Oberon and some muddled mortals would take the prize.
It is the magical accessibility, the comedy and the delicious characters that have appealed decade after decade. It is certainly what inspired me to visit this play again.
This time we are drawing you all into a time of prohibition, of secret and seductive meetings in underground clubs and bars. Of burlesque and cabaret, as these ‘shadows’ call us into a suggestive underbelly of what we imagine is a polite society.
I have been delighted by our small but mighty cast. I applaud our entire Neptune team, as they have joined me on a very different journey for this show.
I understand that SOME of you may have taken advantage of a very secretive experience before the performance. You know, you can trust us to keep quiet about what went on in the wee hours tonight. We won’t tell. We promise. We ask you to do the same.
There’s so much to come this season and many wonderful stories to share. Our hope is that each time you come to the theatre you leave with your heart full and your senses tingling. Neptune has been bringing the very best of professional theatre to Nova Scotians for over sixty years and we are grateful for your patronage.
See you at the theatre
Jeremy Webb Artistic Director
CHAIRS’S MESSAGE
Welcome to the opening show of our 2024-25 season, Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream!
This adaptation from our own Jeremy Webb promises to deliver Shakespeare as you’ve never seen it before - a darker, grittier version of this beloved classic. Designed, built, and rehearsed right here in Halifax, I am so proud of how Neptune Theatre contributes to the local arts economy.
Our 2024-25 season line up is incredible, filled with local stories such as Winter Moons and Controlled Damage to fantastical places like Disney’s Frozen or Little Shop of Horrors. If you’ve not subscribed yet, what are you waiting for?
You can contact our Box Office and convert your ticket to this show into a pro-rated subscription! Whether you’re looking for a flexible package of three or five vouchers to be used across both theatres, or you want to commit to a fixed seat for our Ultimate or Spotlight subscriptions, we invite you to join us for what promises to be an exceptional year of theatre.
Paul Laberge Chair, Neptune Theatre Foundation
Welcome to our Prohibition Era production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream! During the 1920s in Halifax, the current location of Neptune was a vaudeville theatre called the Strand Theatre. In 1963, Neptune Theatre took over the venue and has been here ever since. We’re kicking off our Spotlight Series with a show set 100 years in the past with a text that’s more than 400 years old.
While it is always fun to reminisce about the past, we are always focused forward to the future. Neptune’s longevity is a direct reflection of our patrons and supporters, and by buying a ticket for today’s performance, you’ve helped contribute to our story!
But, the price of your seat only covers half the cost; we rely on the generosity of our donors to help support productions and programs. Please consider donating today to invest in Neptune’s legacy of bringing amazing art to life today, “and tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow”.
