Neptune Theatre is located on sacred land that has been the site of human activity since time immemorial. We are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People, and we acknowledge them as the past, present and future caretakers of this land.
As artists, we are grateful to work and build community here. As stewards of culture, we commit to continuing to improve our relations with Indig enous people and upholding values of collaboration and inclusivity in all that we do.
We strongly recommend that masks be worn in our venues. As our theatres place the audience so close to the action on stage, masking helps protect not only audience members but also the actors, who cannot wear masks when performing. By keeping them safe, we all can help prevent COVID-related performance cancellations.
The videotaping or other video or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited.
The use of cameras, cellular phones, paging devices and all other recording devices is strictly prohibited in the theatre. Please ensure all cellular phones and watch alarms are turned off. Neptune Theatre is a scent-free environment.
Neptune Theatre is a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres and engages, under the terms of the Canadian Theatre Agreement, professional Artists who are members of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association. As is always the way with program notes from Directors, this is being written ahead of the rehearsal pe riod beginning. Literally a week be fore high diving headfirst into this play with this wonderful cast and creative team. I cannot wait for youto sit back but more likely (hopeful-ly) forward in your seat as Stephen King’s world of Misery is brought to life. Like so many, I grew up reading King’s books and watching the many movie adaptations. Misery was a favourite. Since becoming Artistic Di rector of Neptune in January 2018 I have been trying to get the rights for William Goldman’s adaptation of his own screenplay. They finally became available last year, just as I was plan ning this season.
I am delighted to invite you into the home of Annie Wilkes. Be careful not to upset her.
This is Neptune’s 60th Anniversary year and I am so honoured to be the 14th Artistic Director in Neptune’s history. I arrived in Canada (& Halifax) 24 years ago and was fortunate to make this wonderful city, province and theatre my home. Linda Moore
was my first Neptune AD and I am thrilled that during the run of this play we honour her by adding her name to the Artistic Director’s wall in the lobby. She was the first Canadianto hire me and I am truly grateful. (It’sher fault, folks!)
Linda and I have partnered to spear head a campaign to raise much needed funds to keep the building you are in right now operating at maximum potential. Linda oversaw the New Neptune campaign in the late 90’s which saw this building rise and the addition of the Scotiabank Stage. Neptune has produced the atre on this spot for sixty years. With your valued support we can contin ue for at least another sixty!
Contact Leslie Macdonald (Director of Development) if you’d like to make a donation to your Neptune. She’s at: lmacdonald@neptunetheatre.com
Enjoy the show and Happy 60th everyone!

Looking forward to seeing you at Neptune,
Paul LebergeOur Diamond 60th Anniversary sea son is now well underway, and I’m de lighted to welcome you to the darkly comedic psychological thriller Misery - perfect programming for this time of year!
As the seasons change and we gath er to enjoy a wonderful season of the atre, I’d like to remind patrons of our masking policy. Although masks are
currently not required, we strongly recommend that patrons wear masks to help us keep our cast, crew, and staff safe and to prevent cancellations and rescheduling due to COVID. Did you know that masks are required for per formances on Sunday? If you’d feel more comfortable in a fully masked environment, please contact our Box Office today to reschedule your tickets for a Sunday performance.
We will continue to consult with public health and review our policies on an ongoing basis to ensure they reflect the current situation.
Wishing you a safe a enjoying time at Neptune, Lisa Bugden lbugden@neptunetheatre.com
Successful romance novelist Paul Sheldon is rescued from a car crash by his “Number One Fan,” Annie Wil kes. While Paul is convalescing in her secluded home, Annie reads the manuscript to his latest novel - and becomes enraged when she discov ers that the author has killed off her favourite character, Misery Chastain.
It dawns on Paul that Annie has no intention of letting him leave. In stead, she will force him to write a new Misery novel as if his very life de pends on it… and it does.
“There are no lulls in famed screen writer William Goldman’s stage adaptation of the Stephen King story, which Goldman himself translated into the 1990 film… Exposition that took a dozen pages in paper back and at least several minutes on screen plays out… faster than snow piling up in a Colorado blizzard.” - NBC New York.
