JULY 19 - JULY 24, 2022

DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE Neptune Theatre’s Youth Performance Company is so proud to present to you our production of Little Women - The Broadway Musical.

LAURA CASWELL

There is a reason that Louisa May Alcott’s classic story, based on her own true life experiences, has remained relevant to this generation. A coming of age story, set during a complicated time in history, reinforces how life’s dynamic experiences challenge and shape us. Each unique event we witness the March sisters face together is relatable, accessible and touching; from those of great celebration to great loss, from love to fury, from despair to hope. It is the earnestness and openness of these characters that let us safely settle in, and experience these moments through the inspiring performances of the youth on the Neptune stage.

It is not lost on me that after twenty years in professional showbusiness I began to shift focus to working alongside and cultivating the next generation of theatre artists. Now, after five years working with Neptune’s YPCo, I can honestly say that I have never been more proud of not only my own work but of that of this incredible company - and it is just that, a company of remarkable humans. Company is defined as “a condition of being with others, especially in a way that provides friendship and enjoyment”. And, oh, the friendships and joys that have been created through this process. ….Though it was not always easy. As we had to shift through numerous lockdowns, zoom auditions and rehearsals, a change in venue and show dates, numerous personal stresses, masks, and constant rescheduling, the support each and every team member has offered one other has been truly remarkable. You will see 23 artists on stage, but it has taken nearly one hundred gifted creatives to bring this production to life. This journey has taken over two years of delays and six months of extended rehearsals. It has become a true symbol of struggle, joy and commitment for this entire team. Coaches, accompanists, designers, mentors, builders, painters, musicians, administrators, content creators, box office, and consultants are only some of the people you will not see directly on this stage tonight. Special thanks go out to Gwen, Lucas and Maddie who have been rock solid collaborators from day one. Other important supporters have been Emma G, Becca, Sophie, Dean, Amanda, Julia, Kyle, Garrett, Andrew, Matt, AnnMarie, Gina and June to name a few. Our designers Lucas, Ryann, Jaida and Vern have been patient, flexible and visionaries through this whole process. To the entire Neptune Team, and our sponsors and donors, thank you for welcoming YPCo to the Mainstage. Finally, thank you to our biggest supporters, our friends and families. We could not have done this without you. After years of being apart from those we love, and restricted from sharing the art forms we are most passionate about, may this show remind you of how astonishing it truly is to be in an audience, watching a beautiful show created by what I believe to be one of the most talented young companies in the country. Here we go. There is no turning back. Our great adventure has begun. And I cannot wait to see where it will lead.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE Welcome back to Neptune Theatre's Fountain Hall. Here at Neptune we are celebrating our Diamond Anniversary - 60 years of producing theatre here on the corner of Sackville and Argyle streets in downtown Kjipuktuk/Halifax. This year also marks another impressive milestone: 40 years of the Neptune Theatre School. Four decades of introducing people of all ages to the wonder, magic, and heart of live performance. Our theatre school kept going during the COVID pandemic, leading the way forward as we slowly emerge.

JEREMY WEBB

It seems fitting that as we enter our 60th year (June 1st onwards,) the first newly produced show of the year should feature Young Neptune talent. By these artists taking the stage on Fountain Hall we are clearly looking forward to the next 60 years!

With 23 stellar YPCo students making up the cast of Little Women, this is the biggest gathering of talent on the Neptune stage in years. Many of our cast are now instructors with Neptune Theatre School and so the cycle continues. There is student talent in both the cast and the creative team, with six post-secondary students studying theatre as designers and stage managers on the show. As Artistic Director of Neptune Theatre I am inspired and thankful to the entire team of the Neptune Theatre School, led by Laura & Julia, and grateful for the energy and activity that they create. Enjoy this performance of Little Women. Join us in September when Walter Borden brings his play The Last Epistle of Tightrope Time to Fountain Hall. Coincidentally, Walter has been creating that play for 40 years, the same age as the theatre school. He brings it home to Neptune for three weeks to kick off our 60th season.

GENERAL MANAGER'S MESSAGE Welcome to Little Women The Broadway Musical! This year marks Neptune Theatre’s Diamond 60th Anniversary and the Theatre School’s Ruby 40th Anniversary. I can’t think of a better way to mark these milestones than to showcase the next generation of artists and creators at Neptune.

LISA BUGDEN

Director of Education Laura Caswell does double duty as Director and Producer of Little Women. She is joined by long-time Neptune contributor and educator Gwen Dawson as Music Director. Combined, Laura and Gwen have been featured in more than 30 Neptune productions, nurturing and inspiring the next generation of young artists along the way.

The rest of the creative team includes current and former students from the Fountain School of Performing Arts at Dalhousie. Several members of the creative and technical team started out coming up through Neptune Theatre School and YPCo; Lucas Arab, Maddie Maitzen, Ryan Rafuse and Emma Goulden have grown up at Neptune. Harmony Adesola and Vern Endicott-Blinkhorn have strong connections to the theatre, which nicely complimented Jaida Lapsley and Ryan Farmer’s professional experience. Like the creative team, many cast members have taken lessons at the Theatre School and worked as camp staff or with our Front of House team. The 23 young artists you will see on stage have trained and rehearsed and battled through COVID complications to bring this wonderful production to life – on the main stage - Fountain Hall. CONGRATULATIONS! To close, I would like to thank the professional musicians and Neptune’s team of technical experts who have enriched the Youth Performance Company’s learning experience through their involvement in this production. To the family and friends of the company of Little Women, thank you for encouraging and supporting these talented young people. Enjoy the show, Lisa
