ABOUT THE PLAY Springhill Mining Tragedy, 1958 Ruddick worked at the No. 2 colliery; one of the deepest and most dangerous mines in North America at over 14,300 feet deep.

Injured miner, Maurice Ruddick, in hospital, 1958. NOVA SCOTIA ARCHIVES, PHOTOGRAPHER: ROBERT NORWOOD

Maurice Ruddick: The Singing Miner Maurice Ruddick born to a coal mining family in Joggins Nova Scotia, was a descendant of the Loyalist slaves brought to Nova Scotia in the 18th century. Ruddick and his wife Norma were members of a small Black community in Springhill where they raised a family of twelve children. Ruddick was a prolific singer and musician, known throughout the town of Springhill for his energetic personality and musical talents. He would often perform at local venues with his children as The Singing Miner and the Minerettes – earning him the now well-known moniker, The Singing Miner. During the workday at the coal mine, Ruddick would often entertain his fellow miners with musical breaks.

On the morning of 23 October 1958, the No. 2 colliery collapsed during a bump, trapping Ruddick and 174 men underground. Seventy-five men died that day. Several miners were rescued within a couple of days, but at almost 13,000 feet below, Ruddick and six other men were trapped near the bottom of the mine for nine (9) days. To help keep spirits up in the darkness and heat of the mine, Ruddick led his fellow miners in pray and song. The disaster became an international media sensation with Ruddick and some the other miners garnering much public attention, becoming known as the “miracle miners”. In 1958 Maurice Ruddick was named Canada’s Citizen of the Year for his heroism and bravery during the disaster. However, as the only Black person among the survivors, his moment in the spotlight was dimmed with rampant racism. Beneath Springhill: The Story of Maurice Ruddick sheds a light on the effect disaster had on the rural community and the racial tension that grew from it.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE mentioned this play to me in the early part of 2019, when he was here in the cast of The Color Purple. I was intrigued and keen to have Neptune share this story with you all. I was then delighted to hear that Jeremiah Sparks was performing the play in BC (The Arts Club) and would be available to return home to Nova Scotia to do the show again, for us.

Welcome back (again!) to Neptune Theatre in what feels like a never ending rollercoaster ride of restrictions, variants, pivoting and planning. It feels like there is hope. When I saw the team for Beneath Springhill arrive in the building to prepare for this production, I allowed myself a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel we have all traveled through together. Thank you for joining us tonight to share in the story of Maurice Ruddick - “the singing miner.” The creator of Beneath Springhill, Beau Dixon, first

As I write this we continue planning for our 60th anniversary season and will be announcing the line up very soon. It may be that we need to ride the rollercoaster some more, but it feels good knowing that we are in this together. Your support of Neptune throughout the pandemic has been heartwarming. We are still here. We appreciate our patrons, artists, crew, staff, donors, funders and sponsors. Enjoy your time back at Neptune. Jeremy Webb Artistic Director Neptune Theatre

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE In April, patrons will be permitted to adjust their masks to enjoy concessions in the House. For your comfort, we plan to gradually adjust seating and masking requirements throughout Act Two.

Hello and welcome back for Act Two of our 2021-2022 season! I am delighted to have our audiences return to watch this stunning production of Beneath Springhill - a story with deep connections to our Nova Scotian history, featuring Cherrybrook’s own Jeremiah Sparks. As delighted as we are to see public health restrictions eased and lifted, we recognize that many patrons remain concerned about COVID-19. The safety of our patrons, staff, cast and crew remains paramount. Masks and physical distancing will be in place for the production of Beneath Springhill. Food and beverages are not permitted in the theatre. Patrons can remove their masks and enjoy a beverage while seated in the Spatz Lounge and other designated areas, prior to the show. Neptune is offering reduced capacity performances for both the Sunday matinee and evening performances in March and April. Proof of vaccine will be required for entrance to these performances.

I’ve enjoyed meeting and greeting everyone at the door checking their vaccine status. It’s been heartwarming and gratifying to hear how you’ve missed the theatre and all that Neptune means to you. We’ve missed you too! I hope to see you at any of our upcoming productions - Act Two truly has something for everyone. Tickets for all shows are available now by visiting www.neptunetheatre.com. And stay tuned for our 60th Season Announcement coming this spring! Lisa Bugden lbugden@neptunetheatre.com

In July Neptune marks 60 years of contributing to the cultural, social and economic-vitality of our community. Without the generosity of our community, we would not be able to continue planning for our milestone 60th Anniversary Season! Without the financial support of our incredible sponsors and partners, or the trust of patrons like you, our story would be very different. Our team has been working tirelessly throughout this most recent shutdown to ensure that we were ready to entertain and delight you the moment we were given the ‘all clear.’
