@NEPTUNETHEATRE

Neptune Theatre is located on sacred land that has been the site of human activity since time immemorial. We are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq, and we acknowledge them as the past, present and future caretakers of this land.

As artists, we are grateful to work and build community here. As stewards of culture, we commit to continuing to improve our relations with Indigenous people and upholding values of collaboration and inclusivity in all that we do.

We recommend that masks be worn in our venues. As our theatres place the audience so close to the action on stage, masking helps protect not only audience members but also the actors, who cannot wear masks when performing. By keeping them safe, we all can help prevent COVID-related performance cancellations.

Any videotaping or other video or audio recording of this production is strictly prohibited. The use of cameras, cellular phones, paging devices and all other recording devices is strictly prohibited in the theatre. Please ensure all cellular phones and watch alarms are turned off. Neptune Theatre is a scent-free environment.

Neptune Theatre is a member of the Professional Association of Canadian Theatres and engages, under the terms of the Canadian Theatre Agreement, professional Artists who are members of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association. Neptune Theatre engages professional technicians represented by IATSE Local 680.

Neptune Theatre acknowledges the support of our government partners:

THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG 7

CO-PRESENTED WITH

Murder For Two is possibly the most challenging play of the year! Now that’s a big, bold statement! On the outside it’s an adorable musical comedy, single set, two actors. The reality is that on the inside it’s a complete devil of a casting rollercoaster. You need actors that play piano (really play!) and can multirole play AND who can banter with an audience, be funny, and deliciously mischievous. That was our challenge this year - finding those two theatrical unicorns. If you are reading this, sitting in the Scotiabank Stage, we must have succeeded!

When Andrea Boyd (at Festival Antigonish Summer Theatre) first pitched this script to me, she was also suggesting a co-production with Neptune Theatre. I was happy to work it into Neptune’s 23-24 Season, but especially because it meant I got to direct this summer as part of Festival Antigonish. It was delightful to join this wonderful theatre company for another season.

Over the last 25 years I have directed, acted in and created a lot of shows where an actor has to play multiple roles. It’s a methodical process that starts so very slow and accelerates all the way to opening night. This style of performance asks you to join us INSIDE the joke, with a nudge and wink. The creative team, cast and I are thrilled you returned to Neptune to be entertained.

Bravo to the Festival Antigonish for a delightful partnership!

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

CHAIRS’S MESSAGE

Welcome to the first show of our 61st season! We have a truly blockbuster lineup of programming for you this year, starting with this show. A certified smash-hit on both Broadway and The West End, The Play That Goes Wrong is one of the most technically ambitious productions we’ve ever attempted.

This would not be possible without the dedication and skill of our entire team, and the generous support of our sponsors, donors, and partners.

If you’d like to contribute to the magic we make here at Neptune Theatre, consider becoming a donor or sponsor. You can connect with our Director of Development Leslie MacDonald at lmacdonald@ neptunetheatre.com to learn more.

10 THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG

Hello fellow theatre lovers,

It is that time of year when we buckle in for another great season. I’m particularly excited because this marks my inaugural full season with Neptune, and I am thrilled to share the experience of this line up with you. I wanted to express my gratitude to our partners, sponsors, donors, and you, our ticket buyers, none of what lies ahead would be possible without your unwavering support.

Our 23/24 season is a treasure trove of diverse experiences, and if you haven’t purchased your season package yet, contact our Box Office (you can secure a prorated ticket package using your ticket for this show!).

Thank you for supporting Neptune and get ready to laugh until you cry!

THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG 11 EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

BROADWAY’S FUNNIEST SMASH HIT!

This 1920s whodunit has everything you never wanted in a show— an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead, and actors who trip over everything (including their lines). Nevertheless, the accident-prone thespians battle against all oddsto make it through to their final curtain call, with hilarious consequences! A classic farce chock-full of mishaps and madcap mania!

Henry, Henry, and Jonathan met while training at The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). All core members of Mischief Theatre, they had already worked in comedy together for several years before they started out as a writing team.

The three’s first piece was THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG (Best New Comedy – Olivier Awards and What’s On Stage Awards). The show started out on the London and Edinburgh fringe before touring the UK and internationally and then returning to the West End in September 2014, where it is still running. It's also playing on Broadway and heading out on a US tour in 2018 and has been performed in over 20 other countries around the world.

PETER PAN GOES WRONG was the trio’s second piece, opening in November 2014 for a UK tour before a hugely successful West End season in Christmas 2015.

Henry, Henry, and Jonathan recently adapted the script of PETER PAN GOES WRONG for the BBC, which was filmed with the original West End cast and broadcast to rave reviews on New Year’s Eve. They were invited back to wreak more havoc at the BBC in 2017 with CHRISTMAS CAROL GOES WRONG on BBC1.

THE COMEDY ABOUT A BANK ROBBERY marks their third writing project as a trio and earned them another Olivier Nomination.
