Economics of Water Demand Management in Jordan Workshop Programme – Final version Amman (Ministry of Water and Irrigation) and Dead Sea (Hotel Marriott),
Dec. 1-3, 2011 Presentation Water management and economics use specific languages, based on various concepts and definitions. Using this language better will foster a common understanding of methods and instruments to prioritize water management options both on the supply and on the demand side. In Jordan, expected growth of urban population, development of industry and tourism, importance of the agricultural sector for rural employment, are foreseen and will raise important challenges to water demand management. To increase the supply of water and meet this demand, a series of existing water resource development projects are under way or under consideration. However, water demand management tools will also be needed, as the answer to the future prospects cannot rely exclusively on – necessarily – limited new resources. A series of water demand management studies, some recently completed and some ongoing, offer interesting new developments. Water demand management can be significantly strengthened by using water economics concepts, tools and approaches, as a support to decision-making and an instrument for developing a sound “policy mix”. Considering this context, the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, the French Development Agency (AFD), the Marseille Center for Mediterranean Integration (CMI) and Plan Bleu, as part of the “Environment and Water” (EW2) Program of the CMI, are organizing a workshop dedicated to demonstrating, explaining, sharing and discussing the economics of water demand management. Ecowhat and Trémolet Consulting have been asked to organize this workshop and to facilitate presentations and discussions.
