ISI@MED STRATEGIC WORKSHOP 2010 « Territorial approach to Development and Democratic Governance through the use of ICTs». Marseille, November 30th / December 1st As part of the Mediterranean Economic Week
Context ISI@MED is an initiative, developed by UNDP office in Geneva, under the ART GOLD PROGRAM capitalizing on an innovative framework using the territorial approach to accelerate the achievement of the MDGs. The initiative was launched by UNDP in 2009 and became part of the Marseille Center for Mediterranean Integration (CMI) platform in 2010. The Center is a multi-stakeholder platform that strives to facilitate access to best knowledge, enhance sustainable development and converge policies towards greater integration. CMI was founded in 2008 by the World Bank, the European Investment Bank, and the Government of France followed by the Governments of Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia as well as the City of Marseille. ISI@MED is designed to support and contribute to the capacity building of local public and economic actors in the Mediterranean region. Through the use of Information and Communication Technologies, ISI@MED is providing innovative tools for the planning, the implementation and the monitoring of territorial and sustainable development projects. Morocco and Lebanon are the two pilot countries for the first stage of implementation. During the second stage in 2011, ISI@MED will target Mauritania, Syria and Senegal. Mediterranean Economic Week The fourth edition of the Mediterranean Economic Week will be held in Marseille from November 29 to December 4 2010. It is now recognized as an essential forum to discuss and address the consolidation of the Mediterranean partnership and regional economic integration. This edition of the Mediterranean Economic Week will tackle major Mediterranean development issues such as: cooperation,
employment, investment, training, youth as well as other key issues in the field of sustainable economic development. Territorial development and innovation issues will be at the heart of the debates. The Mediterranean Economic Week will bring together eminent representatives of local, national, European and worldwide politics, economists, academic institutions and companies.
Objectives of the WORKSHOP In this context the strategic objectives of the workshop are i) to share information about countries’ projects, their activities and progress in the pilot countries; ii) to present and discuss the good practices and lessons learned regarding the territorial approach and the innovative partnership with a focus on territory to territory triangular cooperation mechanisms and (iii) to jointly design the next phase of the initiative and its main expected results.
