Toward a New Contract? By Agnès Levallois* Four years after the protest movements in the Arab countries and the transition period that followed, socioeconomic issues now need to be urgently tackled. This is the biggest challenge facing the new authorities. However, these issues can only be addressed in a peaceful political atmosphere and in the context of Constitutions that set forth the new social contract between governments and the people. The constitutional issue emerged in the aftermath of the ouster of the Tunisian and Egyptian Presidents, as did the issue of the ability, or lack thereof, to reach a political compromise in order to establish democratic standards. This is the context in which work was done on the Constitutions of Tunisia, Egypt, Morocco, and Yemen, with different results in each country. • • • •

[Report] Plunging Oil Prices Bring Gains and Losses to the Middle East and North Africa Region
The over-50% decline in world oil prices—from US$115 a barrel in June 2014 to less than US$50 today— will have significant consequences for the economies of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This report titled " Plunging Oil Prices", focuses on the implications of low oil prices for eight developing countries, or the MENA-8 (oil importers: Egypt, Tunisia, Lebanon and Jordan and oil exporters: Iran, Iraq, Yemen and Libya) and the economies of the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council), who play a major role in providing funds in the form of aid, investment, tourism revenues and remittances to the rest of the countries of the region. • Read more

World Bank Launches Women Risk Management Start-up Competition in the Middle East and North Africa • Urbanization Knowledge Platform
CONCEPT FRAMEWORK The World Bank is organizing a women risk management start-up competition in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). This competition is a public-private partnership between the World Bank, the IFC, MIT Enterprise Forum, IE Business School, Johnson and Johnson, Arab Urban Development Institute, the MENA Early Stage Investment Facility (ESIF) and Smart Data Science to promote the creation of risk management start-ups led by women. While the seed-funding to organize the competition is provided by the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), investment funds and venture capitalists are financing the establishment of the start-ups and their mentoring during the initial years of operations. The ongoing pilot phase of the competition will target 3 high-risk cities in MENA, whereas the second phase, which will be launched in the second half of 2015, will target up to 100 cities globally. • Read more • 2 attachments
