Dear Valued Colleague, The Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES Curriculum Center is proud to present this year's Professional Learning Catalog. This year's catalog is designed to meet the diverse needs of educators in a way that honors what we know about adult learning. The offerings contained within strive to further build the capacity of your team by leveraging both regional expertise and nationally and internationally known facilitators. The Curriculum Center is committed to serving the expressed needs of educators across our region. In order to do so, we have thoughtfully designed these offerings based on direct feedback from educators and leaders like you. Our professional learning is designed with input from local content area experts and in consultation with the PNW BOCES Curriculum Council. Therefore, we know you will find opportunities in these pages that meet your needs and professional goals as well as those of your staff. By further building on what we know about adult learning and recognizing the unique challenges we all face due to the COVID-19 health emergency, the Curriculum Center has actively sought to design workshops that are "just the right size", with many of our offerings including individual and small group coaching from our facilitators. To support your need to connect, network, and share solutions, through these unprecedented times, we have added Learning Lounges that will meet for an hour every month and provide organic opportunities to share and problem solve alongside a committed community of learners. The Curriculum Center is excited to bring the best of local, national, and international expertise directly to you. We invite you to join Greg Tang to build innovative instructional interventions in math, Myron Dueck for a four part series that will help you develop contemporary grading and assessment strategies K-12, Diane Cunningham who will lead you towards becoming a designer of student learning, and James Martin who will help you build psychologically safe classrooms. These practitioners, paired with our collegial circle groups, learning lounges, and a whole host of other carefully curated professional learning opportunities will provide you and your teams with the tools needed to take teaching and learning to the next level. By utilizing virtual meetings this fall, we will be able to bring each of these amazing learning experiences to you no matter where you are. We see these virtual learning opportunities as another way to broaden the types of support we provide to you. Even once we are able to welcome you back to our campus, we look forward to providing both face-to-face and virtual methods that allow us to grow as learners and leaders. Thank you for your continued support, and for choosing to learn at The Putnam | Northern Westchester BOCES. We look forward to learning and growing, together!

Investigating One's Practice Through Action Research Action research can be a powerfully engaging professional learning experience. Educators in this program will have an opportunity to work inside of a small professional learning community to implement an inquiry project based on their interests, problems of practice, or aspirations. They may work individually or in partnerships to design, implement, and study the impact of new instructional approaches. On day one, the facilitator will guide everyone in the design of an inquiry project. During the school year, she will continue to support the work with short virtual meetings as well as 1:1 conferences. At the end of the year, educators will synthesize, share, and publish short pieces about their learning. Educators will: • select a focus/innovative practice for inquiry • read professional literature • identify and implement specific classroom practices • reflect and capture their own thinking and work • analyze student work to reflect and revise practice.

Studying Skillful Teaching: Promoting Motivation, Learning, and Achievement Nothing is more complex, challenging, or important than assuring high levels of learning for each and every student. And no single factor has a greater impact on student learning than skillful teaching. The Studying Skillful Teaching program is Research for Better Teaching's (RBT) cornerstone program for building teachers' capacity (i.e. the knowledge and skills, as well as the courage and conviction to promote students' motivation, learning, and increased achievement). It is based on the belief that teaching is a process of decision-making, and that skillful teachers never stop learning through experimentation, data analysis, study, and collegial sharing about what works best for their students. The Studying Skillful Teaching workshop is comprised of the following components: • Course schedules are designed to balance in-class learning and reflection with out-of-class application • Course readings draw upon the course text, The Skillful Teacher: Building Your Teaching Skills (2009), and current professional articles • Course assignments, of which there are three, strengthen participants' capacities in the areas of planning, teaching, and reflecting • Participants are expected to come prepared to each session having completed course readings and assignments and ready to engage in critical thinking and dialogue with fellow educators. • The course includes one copy of the required text, The Skillful Teacher.

Elevating Student Discussion This two-day workshop will provide practical strategies for engaging every student in discussion (face to face or online). It will not only offer strategies that support student participation, but it will focus on how to help students to engage thoughtfully. On day 1, teachers will work in collaborative groups to examine examples, experience various protocols, and explore questioning typologies to support student thinking. The facilitator will guide participants in the design of a discussion experience for their classrooms. Between day 1 and day 2, participants will be able to implement their design. On day 2, the learning will continue as teachers reflect, share and fine tune the strategies they used. The use of criteria for quality discussion, strategies for feedback and student reflection will be explored.

Module A: Let Me Show You What I Understand! Developing Manageable Ongoing Assessment and Redo Structures The research is in: our understanding of any topic is most embedded in long-term memory when we stretch learning over time and tackle new things in different and challenging ways. Furthermore, when testing is only viewed as a tool of assessment, we overlook its power for learning. This module will explore some of the fascinating research surrounding memory and testing, and identify key characteristics that must impact the design of ongoing assessment structures. Teachers will then design, or redesign, their own testing structures based on a set of standards, gleaning ideas from our examination of different models that have been tried, tested, and found successful in real classrooms. The module begins with a 2-hour synchronous virtual meeting, followed by virtual feedback and office hours, and ends with another 2-hour synchronous session. As a part of the middle segment, each participant will have an opportunity for a 1:1 conference with the facilitator to discuss individual needs, questions, or ideas. Module B: Collared Shirts and Canned Food Drives Are NOT in the Standards! Developing Grading Guidelines that Support Standards Someone once said that when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Similarly, we've attempted to use grading rules to curb student behavior and encourage compliance. Not only does this approach contradict any attempts at a standards-based model, it can further exacerbate existing socio-economic disparities. This module will start with looking at our core beliefs, and contrasting them with the dizzying and alarming array of ways we've used grades as the stick or the carrot to impact student behavior. Next this module will explore how we can develop equitable grading guidelines and structures that underscore the value of homework, the importance of timelines, and the use of zeros without compromising our assessment data. Module C: Rethinking 100-point scales - How the verbs in our contemporary standards will impact our design of scales and rubrics
Module D: Widen the Window! How Alternative Assessment Ideas Can Engage Students, Give Them the Ability to Show What They Understand
We use percentage terminology throughout our everyday conversations - from the chance of rain to survival rates. There's no question we've also been married to the 100-pt scale in education - from test scores to how we describe learners. As we are nearly 21 percent into the 21st century, it may be time to question whether we need or want 100 categories to describe student learning. This module will look at the origins of percentage grading and research that questions the reliability of percentage scoring. We will then explore how fewer categories of clear descriptors found in proficiency scales might be a better fit for our current standards. Teachers will also encounter seven design considerations for building better rubrics, and be challenged to redefine the language of learning in their classrooms. The module begins with a 2-hour synchronous virtual meeting, followed by virtual feedback and office hours, and ends with another 2-hour synchronous session. As a part of the middle segment, each participant will have an opportunity for a 1:1 conference with the facilitator to discuss individual needs, questions or ideas.
Experts suggest that the ability to create, explore, and innovate will be essential tools for success in our changing world. However, educators might feel uncomfortable with the new because they have come to rely on traditional instructional and assessment methods that seem safe, trusted, and familiar. This module will identify the key pieces of engagement and challenge educators to use them to embrace Authentic Learning Experiences (ALE). Educators will see an array of engaging PBL and assessment ideas used in real classrooms by real teachers, and be challenged to incorporate some version of these tools for themselves and their students. The module begins with a 2.5-hour synchronous virtual meeting, followed by a 2.5-hour segment of virtual feedback and office hours, and ends with another 2.5-hour synchronous session. As a part of the middle segment, each participant will have an opportunity for a 1:1 conference with the facilitator to discuss individual needs, questions, or ideas.

TRAUMA INFORMED & EQUITABLE CLASSROOMS SERIES:
A Deep Dive into Equity: Informing Ourselves, Transforming Our Schools What would our equity efforts look like if they were based on deep, layered understandings of (1) how bias and inequity operate in classrooms and schools, and (2) a comprehensive, sustainable approach to individual and institutional change? This is what we will explore in this four-part series. We will grapple with the difficult but rewarding shifts in ideology and practice required to implement an authentic equity approach; what that approach looks like as it informs policies, practices, institutional cultures, leadership, and other aspects of schools; and how we can avoid common equity missteps. Participants will: • Strengthen and deepen their understandings of equity and inequity as they operate in classrooms, schools, districts, and other educational settings. • Learn the tools of the equity literacy framework, a comprehensive equity approach. • Practice identifying subtle bias and inequity in educational contexts and developing strategies for eliminating that bias and and inequity. • Apply key equity principles and knowledge to complex equity situations in schools. Module C: A Transformative Approach to Racial Equity, Part 1
Module D: A Transformative Approach to Racial Equity, Part 2
The biggest barrier to racial equity progress is not practical, but ideological, based on misunderstandings about racial inequities and their relationships to racial disparities exist in education. In part one of this twopart series we will do a deep dive on how understanding racism more complexly transforms our approach to racial equity. We will practice mapping the ways racial inequity operates, sometimes in quiet, unintentional ways, in classrooms and schools, and why common responses to that inequity don't work and never will work.
How can we avoid common racial equity detours? How can we apply the basic principles of equity literacy in order to identify racial bias and inequity, eliminate racial bias and inequity, and implement actively equitable policies, practices, and institutional cultures? In this workshop we will move from understanding racism and mapping its manifestations in schools to exploring how schools become and remain racially equitable and antiracist.

Beyond the Check-In: Easy Ways to Integrate SEL into Remote Learning Attending to students' social and emotional learning needs was always important, and now it's even more so. Many teachers are using check-ins to help students build community and to get a read on who might be struggling. Beyond using this important tool, how else can teachers support students' social and emotional needs? During remote learning, it's harder for students to (1) take care of themselves, (2) connect with each other, and (3) discover sources of meaning and vitality-so these need to be the focus of SEL right now. This experiential online workshop will offer simple strategies that work both in person and online to address these SEL goals. Because time with students is more precious than ever, we'll focus on strategies that use academic tasks-lessons, assignments, projects, and discussionsas opportunities for social-emotional learning.

Module 1, K-6: Prioritizing Content for the 2020−2021 School Year Along with Curriculum Focal Points, the NYS Next Generation Mathematics Standards continue emphasize the practice of mathematics in the classroom. This working session is focused on the mathematical practice standards embedded in the New York State standards. This can seem counterproductive when our most pressing worry is expressed as lost time and lost content, but this is exactly when we should re−emphasize classroom culture and practice. Module 1, 7-12: Prioritizing Content for the 2020−2021 School Year The context of mathematics education in the 2020−2021 school year cannot be the same as it was in the past. The move to distance learning has impacted mathematics instruction and, worse, has affected students differently. As teachers, we need a strategic approach to ensure that 1) our focus is on essential, foundational content, and that 2) we help close achievement gaps across our student body. The National Council for Teachers of Mathematics has identified Curriculum Focal Points, which highlight the instructional areas necessary at each grade level. What are these Focal Points, and how can they help to frame an organizational model for adapting curriculum? How can we provide students a solid foundation for success next year in the light of uncertainty that lies ahead? In this introductory workshop, we will explore strategies for assessing needs, adapting curriculum, and maximizing impact to serve our students in the coming school year. This workshop will introduce teachers to the Focal Points, share resources for teachers and leaders to use in examining their curriculum for the year, and include small group discussion work around sample content. Re−envisioning Routines in the Math Classroom Grades 3−6: Empowering All Children to Think
PARTICIPANTS:
Math teachers and leaders grades 3-6 DATE/TIME:
How do we support students in developing the kind of mathematical reasoning that is necessary for the 21st century? This webinar focuses on the power using of 10−15 minute mini−lessons to develop students' mathematical reasoning and ability to communicate their thinking with precision and clarity. These routines can be incorporated into any teacher's classroom − live or virtual, and can be used with any curriculum resources. In this webinar series, teachers will: • Experience a variety of new routines and think about how they can be used to develop different kinds of mathematical thinking and to refine student communication. • Learn specific tools for implementing these routines and engaging students in the virtual classroom. • Consider how to deconstruct routines within the framework of big ideas and strategies (e.g., what mathematical big ideas and strategies does this routine develop/support?).
Personalized Professional Development for Math Teachers: Designing and Executing Your Own Plans Last year was extraordinary in the demands it placed on us to redesign ourselves as teachers. Unfortunately, it also highlighted how little professional development is available designed specifically for mathematics teachers and focused on a content area that is both sequential and structured. The solution is that we, as mathematics teachers, are going to have to develop our own professional development. This workshop, in three parts, is focused on the Action Research cycle as a structured approach to personal development. This research technique has the teacher pose a question, research possible solutions, implement a specific practice and collect evidence. In the workshops, we will learn about the structure of the action research cycle and the tools researchers use in their work. Through guided discussion, participants will propose their own areas of work and lay out an experimental design. In subsequent sessions, participants will share back their work (an essential part of the research cycle) and reevaluate their focus.

Journey to Phenomena –Based Science Instruction
PARTICIPANTS:
Science Teachers and Leaders DATE/TIME:
The three –dimensional approach of the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS) places an emphasis on phenomenon– based learning in which students use observations of the natural world to construct their own explanations (for science) or to solve problems (for engineering). Selecting observable, interesting, motivating, and complex phenomenon can drive student inquiry. A goal is student –directed, but teacher–facilitated, instruction that embeds the three –dimensions in the NYSSLS. We will consider phenomenon–based strategies that will transform instruction of current curricula to the NYSSLS approach. Included will be: • Characteristics of good phenomena • Resources to find phenomena • The difference between an anchor phenomenon and a lesson (instructional) phenomenon and how they are used • Tools to evaluate phenomenon–based lessons for alignment with 3D teaching • Lesson planning templates

Discover the Crosscutting Concepts in Your Earth Science Lessons The Crosscutting Concepts (CCCs) provide students with the mental tools needed to help engage in and make sense of complex phenomena from a scientific point of view or to solve problems in engineering. They are essential in understanding the Disciplinary Core Ideas (content) and that different CCCs align with different science and engineering practices. We will view sample phenomena through the lens of the CCCs to demonstrate how students can use them when constructing their own understandings. Examples of how the CCCs can be highlighted in your lessons will illustrate their importance in the three–dimensional instruction of the New York State Science Learning Standards (NYSSLS), while still maintaining fidelity to the Earth Science Key Ideas of the intermediate –level science core curriculum and to the Physical Setting/Earth Science core curriculum. Included will be: • Viewing phenomena through the lens of the CCCs • Gaining familiarity with the CCCs and their potential as a thinking tool for students • Using prompts and teacher talk to draw attention to CCC • Using the CCCs to frame questions around phenomenon • A deeper dive into the CCC progressions

Patterns of Power: Inviting Young Writers into the Conventions of Language Whitney La Rocca, contributing author to Patterns of Power: Inviting Writers into the Conventions of Language will facilitate this workshop that explores ways to harness language conventions to purposefully activate meaning in both comprehension and composition in grades 1–5. Meaning is made when reading and writing crash together in the conventions of language. Author's purpose is why, and author's craft is how. How do we move the conventions of language from being viewed as a right–and–wrong proposition with only one correct answer? Come discover brain–based, practical ways to use the reading–writing connection to teach grammar and editing in a way that grows young writers and readers. Participants in this workshop will receive: • An invitational process for using a bite–sized chunk of children's literature to naturally teach grammar through the study of models, inquiry, conversation, comparison, imitation, celebration, and application • A clear understanding of how authentic grammar and conventions instruction is a journey of meaning–making as a reader and writer • Practical do–tomorrow lessons that work without overwhelming learners–or teachers • Tools for quick, practical, authentic grammar instruction based in author's purpose and craft • Guided experience planning, teaching, and applying manageable and authentic grammar and conventions instruction.

Supporting ALL Students Within a Workshop Structure Do you ever find yourself wondering how to support certain students within your Reading/Writing Workshop? At one time or another, every student has probably said something like, "How long am I supposed to work for?!", "I'm done!", "I learned all these strategies last year!", "I tried that already; it's not working!", or sometimes, silence, (or a head down on the table,) says everything. Most students benefit from modifications within the workshop structure and in our workshop, teachers will build upon their repertoire of strategies to help better meet the needs of students who require extra support or need to be challenged further. The workshop will focus on students who excel above grade level expectations, as well as students with IEPs and English Language Learners; but many of these strategies will be applicable to all!

Novel–Based Reading: Teaching the Reader Not the Book Educators are often comfortable using novels as a tool for teaching reading. This approach can sit within a Readers Workshop, providing the novel sits as a launching pad for explicit instruction. When educators use the novel alongside short stories, poems, articles, and independent reading, they can build a rich unit which grows thinking and writing for our readers. Shifting the mindset to teaching the reader and not the book is a way to arrive at broader goals for readers.

Teaching Vocabulary: What Really Works (Grades 4–12) Although the research consistently points to how important vocabulary is in all subject areas, many teachers have not addressed vocabulary instruction effectively or with sufficient emphasis. In this workshop, teachers will learn ways to teach generic academic vocabulary, subject–specific words, and words encountered in reading through the principles of natural language acquisition. Topics will include how words get learned and stay learned, how to select words for explicit instruction, giving students choices in the words they learn, formative and summative assessments, and word components.

Supporting English Language Learners through Song
PARTICIPANTS:
Music Educators DATE/TIME:
Supporting English Language Learners through Song offers an exciting opportunity to combine music instruction with language instruction. Participants will learn how to apply the call and response technique to a repertoire of songs and have the opportunity to apply this technique to songs of their choice. This instructional strategy provides a light–hearted and fun way to interact with others, their language and culture while leveraging the use of music to learn how to speak English, regardless of first language. By utilizing different styles of songs and beats with call and response techniques, the teacher sings a phrase and the student's repeat, creating proper pronunciation and phrasing. Whether it is a Folk, Rock–n–Roll, or Modern song, student are supported as they achieve the goal of learning English and how the words apply. In addition, learning the specific geographical origins of songs can help with understanding American culture and bring awareness of how certain words, when applied in a song, can have different meanings.

Diverse Storytelling to Foster Intercultural Competence and Empathy in the Elementary Language Classroom Do your students see themselves in your curriculum? Are they learning to stay curious rather than fear otherness? With thought and intention, we can create inclusive stories that promote empathy for all students. See how we used different types of storytelling to transform our family/holidays unit to be more diverse, global, and reflective. To develop global leaders, we must think, create, and teach with a global mind. Our initial family unit worked its way through Bloom's objectives, engaged kids with joyful communication, and ended with an IPA, which led into our holiday unit. We asked, is that enough in 2020? With simple, inclusive tweaks, the lens of awareness can be ignited in both ourselves and our students. Join to learn how one family/holidays unit was transformed into a journey of discovery of self and other. Now curiosity is fostered as students listen, interpret, create, and share stories of diverse families and their many different products and practices. Reflection is woven into each cultural encounter, thereby increasing our students' cultural competence as they discover new worlds.

Three questions we will answer: • What roles do bias, stereotypes, and assumptions play on our ability to engage globally? • What are the building blocks of empathy and how do they align with the skills of intercultural competence? • How can we foster these skills to prepare our students to become global leaders?
Best Practices in World Language Education for Teachers In these two half-day learning sessions, educators will learn how to recognize and support a practical and hands-on, student-centered, proficiency-based world languages classroom using project-based learning through differentiated instruction. In the initial session, educators will review the national standards, analyze various world language methodologies, and explore how these methodologies can be used as an eclectic approach to design lessons with differentiated instruction. In the second session, educators will continue to focus on this approach with time reserved for projectbased learning unit design in which these lessons can be implemented. During these two sessions, leaders will explore: • Application of national benchmarks in the world languages • Research-based ideas to make communication in the target language more engaging for all students • Strategies for stimulating and prompting student engagement • Model lessons that implement contextualized strategies • Models with differentiated activities • Project-based learning.
