Pixar movie magic takes a road trip in ‘Onward’ “Onward” ★★★
ROBERT HORTON
P
ixar has given the world many indelible images since the first “Toy Story” movie in 1995. I guess we can add “the gelatinous cube” to the list. How Pixar’s “Onward” gets to the cube is part of the movie’s road trip. But there’s little question this film will makes its cultural impact, just like the company’s previous efforts. The story is set in a world vaguely like our own, although the characters tend to resemble rejects from the “Shrek” franchise. Teenage nerd Ian Lightfoot (voiced by Tom Holland) lives with his widowed mom (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and older brother Barley (Chris Pratt). A magic wand summons up the ghost of Ian’s dad, but a glitch in the mechanism brings only dad’s lower half. This means that through most of the movie, dad appears as a jaunty pair of trousers, a weird idea that the film somehow gets away with. In the manner of such spells, this one lasts 24 hours. So Ian and Barley quickly take a road trip to

find the magical whatsis that will complete dad’s outline, if only briefly. This appeals greatly to Barley, a Dungeons & Dragons type who knows everything about magic and incantations and ye olde lore. When the boys hop into Barley’s van, their trip becomes a mythical quest, even if it’s only a pop over into the next county. The idea behind “Onward” — written by Jason Headley, Keith Bunin and director Dan Scanlon

— is that the world was once full of actual magic, with unicorns flying around and houses carved out of giant mushrooms (I think that’s what those are). Gradually, the magic disappeared when logic and science took over. These days, the flying unicorns are nosing around in overturned garbage cans. So the Lightfoot brothers’ journey is a nostalgia trip back to a simpler era. I think this might be one of the reasons I didn’t
love “Onward” the way I love “Up” or “Toy Story 4.” There’s something about its concept that feels a little screwy — or maybe it’s just personal preference. I’ll take science over magic any day, so the film’s wistfulness about a past age of dragons is a matter of taste. The character design may be a matter of taste, too. This is a curious collection of lumpy-looking fantasy-world figures, vaguely half-beast and halfelf. Let’s just say I got used
to them after a while. The ingratiating vocal performances from Pratt and Holland (deftly leaving behind their Marvel personas as Star-Lord and Spider-Man) help the cause. If not everything in the film is absolutely 100%, at least these two bros carry the load. Pixar still has its mojo, which becomes clear in the film’s final minutes. It all comes down to connection, sacrifice and a reunion discreetly
In a screwy world of elf-like people and lost magic, two nerdy brothers (Tom Holland and Chris Pratt) go on a quest to complete a spell that could bring back their father. This Pixar outing doesn’t have the greatness of some of their other titles, and the characters are frankly pretty weird to look at, but it builds to an ending that delivers unexpected life wisdom. Rating: PG, for violence Opening Friday: Alderwood Mall, Cinebarre Mountlake Terrace, Edmonds Theater, Everett Stadium, Galaxy Monroe, Marysville, Stanwood Cinemas, Meridian, Oak Tree, Seattle 10, Thornton Place, Woodinville, Blue Fox Drive-in, Cascade Mall, Oak Harbor Plaza glimpsed from afar. As usual with Pixar, there’s life wisdom in “Onward” that seems far above the level of a feature-length cartoon, the kind of thing (along with the occasional gelatinous cube, of course) that makes you grateful for these movies.

Fitfully funny satire of our corrupt age needs sharper fangs “Greed” ★★½ Satire about a crooked British millionaire (Steve Coogan in his zone) whose plans for a garish 60th birthday party are detailed here, with aside for “Big Short”style explainers about the warped financial system. Director Michael Winterbottom’s film is sporadically funny, but it only occasionally demolishes its sacred cows. With Isla Fisher. Steve Coogan’s costars include his perma-tan and garishly whitened teeth in “Greed.”
By Robert Horton Herald movie critic
S
atire is struggling to survive in this beyond-parody era of ours. “Greed” is the latest example. This movie is made by talented people and its targets deserve all the arrows sent their way. Yet the film keeps falling short of the jugular vein. At its center is a British retail titan, Sir Richard McCreadie (Steve Coogan), a con artist nicknamed “The King of the High Street” for his association with chain
stores. McCreadie is in transition mode; he’s recently been hauled before an investigative board, and wants to repair his reputation by throwing a massively tasteless 60th birthday party for himself. Whenever the movie focuses on the birthday bash, it scores. Imagined as an elaborate toga party on a Greek island, with copious quotes (and misquotes) from McCreadie’s beloved “Gladiator,” the party features a tacky fake Coliseum and one very real lion.
Meanwhile, McCreadie has commissioned a fawning biography, to be written by an easily flattered journalist (David Mitchell, a very droll British comic actor). This structure allows us to find out how McCreadie amassed his wealth. In detailing how the system works, “Greed” borrows a few pages (and a comic/furious tone) from “The Big Short.” We see how McCreadie strikes deals with Asian sweatshops and bluffs his way through meetings with financial backers. In one brilliant section,
we get a tutorial on “asset stripping and tax avoidance,” two techniques that have allowed McCreadie to become rich without actually being very good at business. What he is good at is not having a conscience, a quality upon which many fortunes are built. Coogan, one of the world’s leading experts in conveying fatuousness, is very comfortable here. With his perma-tan and blindingly whitened teeth, he’s a walking advertisement for narcissism. At one point a
desperate group of Syrian refugees camps out on the beach meant for McCreadie’s birthday bash. The tycoon insists they be removed: “It’s not me, it’s my guests. Some of them are very superficial.” Director Michael Winterbottom worked with Coogan in the “Trip” series and “Tristram Shandy.” Here, Coogan takes his place in a larger ensemble, but I couldn’t help wondering if the film might have had more bite if he dominated the story more — a risky tactic, to be sure, given
his character’s repellent nature. The cast includes Isla Fisher as Coogan’s ex-wife and Asa Butterfield as his sullen son. A few famous faces float past, and — very amusingly — so do a series of celebrity doubles, hired for McCreadie’s party when real A-listers cancel. “Greed” is a little too scattered to truly demolish its sacred cows — although I did like the lion, which will play its role before the end. Really, if satire involves exaggerating to make a point, how can you possibly exaggerate the madness of 2020, where a ludicrous guy like McCreadie looks like a small-timer?

Village Theatre makes this time-tested musical shine By Gale Fiege Special to The Herald
“She Loves Me” is not a super well-known piece of theater, but it’s is a Tony award-nominated musical with good bones and a delightful history. Village Theatre’s production honors its complex score, performed by actors and orchestra who are up to the challenge. Village Theatre’s highly professional production of the timeless musical opened Feb. 28 to an appreciative audience. It runs through March 22 at Everett Performing Arts Center. Originally produced on Broadway in 1963 under the direction of the iconic Harold Prince, the show is based on the 1937 play “Parfumerie” by Budapest playwright Miklos Laszlo. This play also inspired the 1940 MGM movie “The Shop Around the Corner” starring James Stewart and Margaret Sullavan, as well as the 1949 musical film “In the Good Old Summertime” with Judy Garland and Van Johnson. And most will remember the 1998 Nora Ephron romantic comedy “You’ve Got Mail” with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, which pays homage to “The Shop Around the Corner,” and its pen-pal exchanges. “She Loves Me” also enjoyed two Broadway revivals, in 1993 and 2016, garnering even more Tony nominations. The score (by Jerry Bock) is beautiful and the love story (by Joe Masteroff with lyrics by Sheldon Harnick) is enchanting and hilarious. Village director Karen Lund makes the most of this 1930s story about two “lonely hearts” pen pals
If you go Village Theatre’s “She Loves Me” is showing through March 22 at the Everett Performing Arts Center, 2710 Wetmore Ave., Everett. Perfumery shop clerks Amalia and Georg have never quite seen eye to eye, but what they don’t know is that they have already fallen in love — through a “lonely hearts advertisement.” Tickets are $45-$85. Call the box office at 425-257-8600 or go online to www. villagetheatre.org.

who unknowingly become competing sales clerks at a perfume shop. It’s a story about connection, self-doubt and, in the end, trust in love. “I think that’s part of the reason this story keeps
coming back — in different forms with different settings — because regardless of the decade, all of us are seeking that joy which can only come from being truly known and truly loved,”
writes Lund in the play program’s director’s note. Scenic designer Matthew Smucker also has a big winner with the set. The audience applauded when the shop’s exterior walls opened to reveal an elegant sales room, harking to the bustling retail boutiques and department stores that are now fading into history. Most of the main characters are played by actors familiar to Village audiences. Eric Ankrim (“String”) and Allison Standley (“Into the Woods”) are the pen pals. These wellknown Seattle-area actors do great justice to the rom-com and its music. Rafael Molina (“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”)
plays the shop courier, Eric Polani Jensen (“Fiddler on the Roof”) is the shop owner, and Randy School (“My Fair Lady”) and Taryn Darr (“Chicago”) are the shop’s other clerks. Mark Emerson, well known in regional theater around the country, makes his Village debut. The audience also got a kick out of ensemble members Cassi Q Kohl, Anasofia Gallegos and Be Russell as the shoppers, as well as Christian Quinto, Matthew Posner and Tony Lawson in other roles. A shout-out here to R.J. Tancioco, who grew up in Mountlake Terrace and who directs many of Village Theatre’s pit orchestras. “She Loves Me” was a bit on the tough side musically, and
Tancioco and his musicians were brilliant. The Everett openingnight audience included a fair share of youth, which is a bonus at any performance. With so many Snohomish County students already involved with musical theater at their schools, the Village Theatre shows ought to be packed. Discounted “rush” tickets are available to students at the box office on the night of each performance. Also available from Village are three-show subscriptions, which offer a 20% savings off single-ticket prices. If you’re going to buy a ticket to “She Loves Me,” it might be worth it to add short-season tickets to “Hansel & Gretl & Heidi & Gunter,” which plays Everett April 24 through May 17, and “The Wedding Singer,” which will be seen locally from June 26 through July 26.

Fisherman’s Village Music Festival unveils its 2020 lineup Two nationally known indie rock bands will perform, but the focus is on regional music. The event is set for May 14-16. By Evan Thompson Herald Writer
Two nationally touring indie-rock bands, Florida’s Surfer Blood and Minnesota’s Night Moves, will headline this year’s Fisherman’s Village Music Festival in Everett. The Everett Music Initiative’s seventh annual festival is set for May 14-16 in downtown Everett. The venues have yet to be determined. Tickets for the 21-andolder event are $79 for three days of live music. They can be purchased online at thefishermansvillage.com. Prices for single-day tickets will be announced with the festival schedule in April. The festival will showcase more than 50 acts, ranging from folk to hip-hop. Everett Music Initiative founder Ryan Crowther curated the lineup based on feedback from from previous festivals. The focus this year is on Pacific Northwest talent, he said. “Ultimately, as we sort of cement ourselves as a community festival, we’re really comfortable not having a big headliner,” he said. “We really want to focus it on well-known Pacific Northwest artists who people are excited to see and maybe lesserknown artists from around the country that will be more of a discovery.” Surfer Blood, which gained notice for their 2009 single “Swim,” is known for infectious pop melodies with gritty overtones accented by frontman John Paul Pitts. The band appeared on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” in 2012.
“Surfer Blood is able to straddle a line of very accessible indie rock with an underlining punk rock sense to it,” Crowther said. “It’s almost hidden, but it comes out in their live performances.” Night Moves has drawn comparisons to Flaming Lips, Band of Horses and Mercury Rev for its brand of “poppy psychedelia.” “The band is able to deliver a modern sound that appeals to playlist algorithms and younger folks, but (frontman John Pelant’s) vocals bring a real classic, sultry sound that anyone would love,” Crowther said. More than 20 acts from the lineup are from Snohomish County, including Everett favorites The Moondoggies, Jason Webley and TELLERS. Josh Clauson, founder of Darrington music festival Summer Meltdown and frontman of jam band Flowmotion, also will perform. A handful of local acts will play during the Night Market, a free, allages section of the festival that showcases live music and locally made goods. Returning performers include Oliver Elf Army, SPHYRAMID, Clothing Optional, Sylvi, The Moon is Flat, I Will Keep Your Ghost, Weep Wave and Actionesse. Other acts playing at this year’s festival: Yuno, whose 2018 song “No Going Back” accumulated more than 2 million plays on Spotify, is known for jubilant, bouncy riffs, moody melodies and catchy hooks. He’s signed to Sub Pop, the Seattle

record label that helped launch the grunge era. Kassi Valazza’s songwriting melds elements of folk, rock, Americana and country with narrative-centric lyrics that portray her childhood growing up in Arizona. “Kassi has this high desert, Americana vibe,”
Crowther said. “It’s just incredible, and her band couldn’t be better.” Chanti Darling is a Portland-based electro-soul band fronted by Chanticleer Trü. Trü’s reverence for disco, boogie funk, rhythm and blues and house makes every song
feel like a late 1980s block party. Lowland Hum, an alternative folk duo from Charlottesville, Virginia, is made up of husband and wife Daniel and Lauren Goans. Playing on acoustic guitar and piano, the couple’s music has been described as poetic and evocative. Moments of levity and vulnerability can be heard on their fourth full-length studio album, “Glyphonic,” released in 2019. Black Ends: The Seattlebased grungy rock trio’s music is often described as dark, rambunctious and frazzling. Led by singerguitarist Nicolle Swimms, their wiry debut EP “Sellout” in 2019 includes moody atmospheres, swaggering garage-rock grooves and razor-like guitar work. ‘Better Things’: Pamela Adlon’s character, and her show, stuck in neutral.
Pamela Adlon returns as sharp-tongued single mom Sam Fox in “Better Things.” SUZANNE TENNER / FX
By Verne Gay Newsday
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: In season 4, Frankie (Hannah Alligood) has moved back home, so it’s a full house again with single mom/actress Sam (Pamela Adlon) and daughters Max (Mikey Madison) and Duke (Olivia Edward). “Phyl” (Celia Imrie) is still driving her own daughter, Sam, batty. It’s the rainy season in Los Angeles — really rainy. MY SAY: After two straight Emmy nods, Adlon got zip for season 3, the best one of all.
Maybe voters finally realized “Better Things” was about them, or too much about them. And … still is. The fourth season remains that closely observed portrait of a small world, confined to certain LA ZIP codes dominated by “the biz,” where a sense of unease, paranoia and “tsoris” stalks every word and action. Sam is turning 50, so double that sense. That it’s raining all the time helps. “Things” is still about how the little stuff is really the big stuff, and how generational conflicts play out much as they have since moms have had daughters. Meanwhile, the
comedy, also poignancy, is still refracted through that “biz,” or as someone points out to Sam, “It’s ‘Logan’s Run’ here,” to which she replies, “Yeah, and we’re the dead people.” Still good? Of course — aside from a nagging sense that Sam and “Things” are standing in place. Inertia is part of the joke, except that we think we already know the punchline. TV shows are about journeys, too, but through the early episodes this one seems like it may be stuck in neutral. BOTTOM LINE: “Things” is in deja-vu-allover-again territory.

WHAT TO WATCH Thursday The new sci-fi thriller “Devs” follows a young software engineer (Sonoya Mizuno) at a cuttingedge Silicon Valley tech company. When her boyfriend goes missing, she suspects the secret development division of the company has something to do with it. (FX on Hulu) Brace yourself for more hilarious happenings as “Better Things” returns for its fourth season. Apparently, Sam (Pamela Adlon) is going through a midlife crisis, which should bug the heck out of her three precocious daughters. (10 p.m., FX)
Friday There’s more drama on
“Blue Bloods” as Jamie comes under investigation after his police vest is found on a perp. Also, Frank debates whether to aid and protect an old friend (Ed Asner), whose home was invaded. (10 p.m., CBS)
Saturday Daniel Craig, who stars in the upcoming James Bond film “No Time to Die,” takes on the hosting duties for tonight’s edition of “Saturday Night Live.” The musical guest is The Weeknd. (11:30 p.m., NBC)
Sunday “Family Karma” is touted as the first U.S. reality series to feature an all-Indian cast. It follows a group of Miami-based young adults who have grown up in traditional, multigenerational homes. They still cherish their cultural customs, but lean
more toward the “American way.” (9 p.m., Bravo) “Rob Riggle: Global Investigator” is a new series that has the comedian and former Marine traveling the globe to unearth some of the world’s greatest legends and mysteries. We call “shotgun.” (10 p.m., Discovery)
Monday “Cosmos: Possible Worlds” is the latest offering from the popular science franchise. Once again, host Neil deGrasse Tyson takes complex themes from astrophysics, astronomy and anthropology, and explains them in a way that it doesn’t feel like brain-numbing homework. (9 p.m., National Geographic)
Tuesday In the new feel-good drama “Council of Dads,”
a young father of five (Tom Everett Scott) is rocked by an unexpected health scare. This leads him to call upon the three most important guys in his life to step in as backup dads — just in case he needs them. (10 p.m., NBC) Get ready to wipe down your TV screen. Judging from preview trailers, the fifth and final season of Tyler Perry’s sexy drama “If Loving You Is Wrong” should be steamier than ever. (10 p.m., OWN)

Women Painters of Washington show celebrates their 90th year By Evan Thompson
If you go
Herald Writer
Six women founded the Women Painters of Washington in 1930 to address a lack of attention paid to female artists. Over the next 90 years, more than 1,000 professional artists joined their ranks, earning national and international recognition for the organization. Today, about 150 members band together to put on exhibitions around the state. The Women Painters of Washington 90th anniversary show runs from March 7 through April 12 at Matzke Fine Art Gallery and Sculpture Park on Camano Island. “Present Tense” will feature the works of 38 members and two founders, Elizabeth Warhanik and Dorothy Dolph Jensen. Judith Heim, juried exhibits director, said the show will emphasize the current styles and themes of today’s artists, while also showcasing how art has changed over the past 90 years. “There’s going to be a little bit of everything,” she said. “Some artists paint more traditionally and some are more contemporary. There is kind of a Northwest flavor to the art that comes out of this area; the founders were certainly part of that in the earlier years. “This is sort of a continuation of that, but we’re in a very different world than we were in the 1930s.” There will be 73 pastel, oil, mixed media and acrylic paintings on display. Many of them depict life in the Puget Sound region, such as ferry crossings and hiking trails in the Cascade
“Present Tense,” the Women Painters of Washington 90th anniversary show opens March 7 at Matzke Fine Art Gallery and Sculpture Park, 2345 Blanche Way, Camano Island. The gallery is open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., weekdays by appointment. A gala and artists’ reception is set for 4:30 p.m. March 14 at the gallery. Call 360-387-2759 or go to www.matzkefineart.com/current-show for more information.

Range. Others are portraits, figurative work and whimsical creatures. Another style showcased, known as nonobjective, focuses on color, forms and shapes. Karla Matzke, owner of the gallery, said this abstract form veers away from reality for a more visceral response from viewers.
“Even though they’re abstract, they’re not depicting anything at all,” she said. “It’s supposed to evoke an emotion or feeling.” All of the paintings will be for sale except for founders Warhanik and Jensen’s works. Both women became established figures in Seattle’s arts scene: Jensen
exhibited her vivid portraits in one-woman shows around the nation, while Warhanik became a prominent artist for her striking landscape and still-life paintings. Jensen’s portrait of Vera Weatherbee will be on display. Made in 1930, the oil painting shows Weatherbee wearing a blue blouse with a collar. Warhanik’s 1938 painting depicts an industrial scene in Ballard. Matzke, 61, of Camano Island, also featured the Women Painters of Washington at her gallery in 2018. Matzke said she was happy to host them again because of the group’s impact over the years — adding that the show is all the more significant given that it’s the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote. “Being a woman artist, it’s nice to be able to celebrate a group that has

stayed in operation this long,” she said. “They’re really encouraging for women artists.” Snohomish County artists showing in the exhibit include Everett’s Janet Hamilton,
Edmonds’ Mary Anderson and Heim, who lives in Woodway. Heim, 70, who joined the Women Painters of Washington in 2010, will show three collages made with Japanese rice paper, gel and acrylic paint. All three have whimsical themes loosely inspired by Russian-French artist Marc Chagall, who was known for his avant-garde works. “I’ve been playing a lot with quirky figures, fun themes and figurative work,” she said. “One of them has chairs that are actually people with heads and feet.” Evan Thompson: 425-339-3427, ethompson@heraldnet.com.
