Seniors, students speak out about election Samantha Pak spak@redmond-reporter.com
Tuesday is election day and with that comes the end of a long campaign trail at the local, state and national levels that was difficult to ignore. With the big day quickly approaching, the Redmond Reporter spoke with four Redmond residents — two who have yet to vote in their first election and two who have voted in more
than a few — about their thoughts on a number of issues concerning the country and the state. Here is what they had to say: • Michael Pavlov, age 17, senior at Redmond High School and currently enrolled in Advanced Placement Government • Grace Lindsey, age 17, senior at Redmond High School and currently enrolled in Advanced Placement Government • Martin Berndt, age 71, retired
Navy jet mechanic • Sally Woolverton, age 70, retired from a career in the medical field What do you think is the biggest issue the country has to deal with? Pavlov: “What impacts me the most is education.” He added that the economy is another concern and he would like to see it stable enough to make higher education affordable for students and allow them to enter the [ more election page 6 ]

Last Saturday’s Thrill the World event brought in $7,415 for the SecondStory Conservatory (SSC) in Redmond Town Center. The event was organized by Redmond Zombies and included a dance performance to Michael Jackson’s song, “Thriller” by 340 participants as part of a worldwide attempt to set the record for largest simultaneous dance. The money raised for SSC came from various sources: $5,630 from dancer registration fees, $1,131 from dance workshops, $210 from donations and $444 from merchandise. SSC is SecondStory Repertory’s education program and the money raised will help keep costs down and make arts education accessible to everyone, regardless of income level. Courtesy of Tim Poitevin

Mekenna Mossman rolls up her right pant leg and points at the spot near her knee cap where the injury occurred. However, the small bandage doesn’t even begin to tell her harrowing story. After looking up with a slight smile, Mossman, 15, then runs her hand along part of the scar that begins at her knee cap and continues up to her hip. What started as a deep puncture the Redmond High School sophomore cross-country runner suffered after falling on the Hartman Park trail during a pre-season training session, turned into a severe case of necrotizing fasciitis (flesh-eating bacteria). It could have taken her leg — or her life — if it hadn’t been treated properly, says Kristen Mossman, Mekenna’s mother. Kristen looks at her daughter, breathes in and speaks, “I tell her whenever she looks at that scar, it needs to remind her of how strong she is and how courageous she is and how amazing she is.” Earlier in the emotional conversation at a Redmond coffee shop on Monday evening, Mekenna said that she never thought she was in harm’s way. The athlete figured she’d be out and running with her Mustang cross-country teammates in no time. “It’s definitely scarier now than it was then,” she said. “Then, I [ more mekenna page 8 ]

The movie’s over for bandits, but some people recover stolen items Samantha Pak spak@redmond-reporter.com
Gail Genereau and her husband had only left the house for 45 minutes on June 25 when burglars broke into their home and stole a variety of things including much of the jewelry she had spent 40 years collecting. The Lake Forest Park resident never thought she’d see any of the stolen items again, but decided to stop by the Redmond Police Department (RPD) Tuesday afternoon to see if she would find anything among the thousands of items released by the department in relation to the “Movie Bandits” case from earlier this year. The case involved a 31-year-old man and 36-year-old woman who would break into vehicles in public parking lots such as movie theaters or shopping centers, steal the vehicle registration and other valuables in the car and then proceed to the victims’ residences, knowing they weren’t home. The pair targeted about 60 victims and their crime spree was
mainly contained to King and Snohomish counties, but also included the cities of Mount Vernon and Wenatchee. Genereau said their burglary, which occurred after the initial rash of crimes in the spring, didn’t match this description but many of the cities surrounding Lake Forest Park were hit by the Movie Bandits, so they decided to make the trip to Redmond. They

As Genereau walked through the RPD training room where all the stolen property was displayed, she discovered a lot of the costume and antique jewelry she thought she’d lost forever. “It feels wonderful,” she said. “I’m seeing things I thought I’d never see again.” While Genereau was
fortunate to recover some of her lost items, others weren’t so lucky. “It’s such a range of emotions,” said RPD spokesperson Jim Bove.

He said some people who stopped by the department in hopes of retrieving their lost property arrived shaken and distraught to be revisiting a crime that happened more than half a year ago and then left the same way. Others recovered some items but decided not to keep them because they did not hold any real value and the victims felt the items were dirty and tainted by crime, Bove said. One woman found only one bracelet among the stolen property, but was just happy to know that the people responsible for the crimes have been caught. It was reported earlier that the RPD arrested the Movie Bandits on Aug. 1 in Bothell. Officers went to arrest the female suspect for rendering criminal assistance and
were met by a fleeing male, who was then captured by Redmond police dog Vader. Bove said they believe the two suspects, who are from Bothell, are responsible for four auto thefts, four attempted burglaries, 19 car prowls, four commercial burglaries, 26 residential burglaries, one combined car prowl and residential burglary, three combined residential burglaries and auto thefts and two residential burglary frauds. The female suspect has been charged and released and is currently awaiting a court date for her trial. The male suspect has been arraigned and is still in custody. While in jail, the two suspects have since gotten married. “It’s a sign that you can find true love just about anywhere,” Bove said.

Myers: His ‘experience and intelligence are obvious’ I am one of those citizens who enjoys attending Redmond’s City Council meetings, as well as keeping up with the committees that review the issues before they come to council. Hank Myers’ experience and intelligence are obvious, but it’s his wit and congenial nature that make Redmond’s processes less daunting and more productive. Where others lecture, Hank listens. Even if he disagrees with your position, he will help you get your views on record and be given a fair hearing. If he is elected to the Legislature, I will miss his perceptive and analytical voice on the City Council. However, he is exactly the sort of representative Olympia needs to reduce the gridlock and create innovative solutions to our state’s most pressing problems. I supported Hank in the primary and believe he is the best candidate running in the general election. Please vote for Hank Myers in the 48th District’s legislative race.
Bill Dorsey, Redmond
Habib: ‘Driven to make sure people are treated fairly’ I wanted to share a few words about Cyrus Habib. I know we are getting closer to election day, and I wanted to share a little bit about which 48th District candidate I support. I’m an independent voter who focuses on the content of a candidate, who they are, and what they stand for. I worked with Cyrus Habib when he served on the Bellevue College Foundation Board, as well as did some volunteer work with the Evergreen Hospital Foundation. Cyrus has a huge commitment and passion for our community. He is driven to make sure that people are treated fairly and that what needs to get done is done in the right way. Some people have asked me why he wears sunglasses in his pictures. Cyrus is blind, but it has not held him back in any way. When I spend time with Cyrus, I don’t think about it because he is so effective and natural in how he engages with people.

Goodman has provided ‘great service to our state’ I am writing to support Roger Goodman, state representative of the 45th Legislative District who was recently given a national award by Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) for Legislator of the Year for his legislation that requires that ignition interlock devices be installed on cars of convicted drunk drivers. MADD noted that interlock devices reduce highway deaths from drunk driving by 20 percent. They called Washington’s law a model for the other 49 states. Despite Goodman’s great service to our state, Joel Hussey, his Republican challenger, has made accusations that Mr. Goodman “sponsored a bill that lightens penalties on drunk drivers and will cost millions because it violates federal funding standards.” Both of the accusations are completely false. Would MADD award its Legislator of the Year to a legislator who weakened penalties on drunk drivers? These accusations are featured both in cable TV ads and in unidentified robocalls made to voters in the district. The robo-calls violate campaign finance laws,
because they do not state who is paying for the call. Look up the facts and hold Mr. Hussey accountable for his false claims and illegal robocalls. In my opinion, Hussey is running a deplorable campaign and does not deserve to be elected to represent our district.

Sheriff Strachan aims to ‘improve training, efficiency and community safety’ I was fortunate to meet with Sheriff Steve Strachan several months ago. I was very impressed with his professionalism, as well as his exceptional grasp of complex issues. In the ensuing months, I have observed several other key points that illustrate his ability to effectively lead. He has made important changes to the department, making it more efficient and responsive to citizens’ needs. He has greatly reduced overtime, and will be hiring over a dozen new officers. This was not an easy task in the current budget crisis, and his efforts were applauded by County Executive Dow Constantine. He works well with both sides of the aisle, and was recommended for this office by the former Sheriff Sue Rahr. In addition, the County Council unanimously confirmed Sheriff Strachan for the office. He has previously managed departments, written budgets, is innovative and truly cares about serving the people. His latest achievement was recently announced by the City of Auburn. Sheriff Strachan is collaborating with Auburn to create a Regional Law Enforcement Training Center. This center would be available to other departments in King County, as well. Training is one of the first cuts to be made to an agencies’ budget in tough times, and a solution such as this crucial to maintaining the training of our officers. The sheriff has demonstrated that he has a strong vision for important changes that will improve training, efficiency and community safety. He is the best choice for the position of sheriff.
Curt Bateman, Redmond
Urquhart ‘understands King County and the people who live here’ I urge everyone to support John Urquhart for King County sheriff. He has spent the last 36 years of his life serving the public as a police
officer and has worked in all levels of the sheriff ’s office. Prior to becoming a full-time police officer, he was a successful small-business owner with more than 60 employees. He knows how to use our tax dollars wisely. John retired last year, but was urged to run for sheriff by people in all ranks of the sheriff ’s office. Under the current leadership, the sheriff ’s office has received two devastating audits, lost more than 100 citizen complaints, failed to properly review officer-involved shootings and is facing a $9 million sexual-harassment claim. John has the leadership skills needed to bring accountability back to the sheriff ’s office. He understands King County and the people who live here. On a personal note, I contacted John about a safety issue in my neighborhood some years ago. He was very responsive, supportive and helpful to its resolution. He has always conducted himself with the utmost respect, and I know he’ll make a great sheriff.
Barbara Manley, Redmond
An Initiative 1240 rundown Here’s what you need to know about Initiative 1240 — charter schools. • Fifty-one percent of parents or teachers in any school can petition to have their school converted to a charter school. • Charter schools would be able to employ non-certified teachers of “unusual competence and in exceptional cases” in place of certificated staff. • All state funds for the students in the charter school would be funneled from the students’ public schools into the charter school — even though the expenses at the students’ home school would remain the same. If a student leaves his home school for a charter school, the heat, maintenance, supplies, library books, etc., will still have to be paid, but no state funds will be received by that school. The same is true for local levy money — students going to charters would take their entire local levy funding with them. • If a school converts to a charter, the school district would have to turn the school over for full use by the charter, but the district would not be able to charge the charter school any rent. • Districts would have to pay for any major repairs to a charter school within their district, such as replacing/repairing HVAC systems, roofs and safety upgrades, even though the district is [ more letters page 5 ]

First Congressional District race has drawn national attention
First Congressional District candidate Suzan DelBene, middle left, stands beside United States Sen. Patty Murray at a recent rally at DelBene’s headquarters in Bothell. matt phelps, Reporter Newspapers Matt Phelps mphelps@kirklandreporter.com
The 2010 United States Census resulted in a shift of 12 congressional seats across 18 states, including Washington. But the new 1st Congressional District, which includes Redmond, Bothell, Kenmore and Kirkland on the Eastside, is one of the most watched races in the country. The race pits Republican John Koster, who is in his third term on the Snohomish County Council from Arlington, against Democrat Suzan DelBene, a former Microsoft executive who lives in Medina. The district stretches from the Canadian border down to Interstate 90 and Medina and covers 6,600 square miles. To put that into perspective, it is nearly as big as New Jersey at 8,722 square miles and bigger than Delaware, Rhode Island and the District of
Columbia combined (4,245 square miles). But it is not the size that has caught the eye of national news media such as the New York Times and political party leaders, such as former Democratic Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. The New York Times recently called the district one of the most evenly divided politically in the nation. The old 1st District fell constantly into the Democrats column. But a SurveyUSA poll for KING 5 News in Seattle released Oct. 23, showed a dead heat with DelBene narrowly edging Koster 47-44 percent. But those numbers are within the margin of error. With the race so close, some heavy hitters have visited the state in support of each candidate. United States Sen. Patty Murray attended a rally at
DelBene’s headquarters in the North Creek area of Bothell on Oct. 21. “(The district) was designed to be 50-50 and this is a historic time for this district,” said Murray, who grew up in Bothell. “But I predict that after the race it won’t be considered a swing district.” Murray said that she knows how important it is to get voters to the polls. “I remember a Bothell mayor race that was won by one or two votes,” said Murray, who is the senior senator from Washington first elected in 1992. Along with Murray, DelBene has had national Democratic leaders such as Pelosi, Congressman Steny Hoyer, who has represented Maryland for 30 years and South Carolina Congressman Jim Cyburn on the campaign trail. Koster has had Christie, Georgia Congressman Tom Price, M.D., talk radio host and son of former President
Ronald Reagan, Michael Reagan, along with Congressman Dave Reichert campaigning for him. “It really is one of the most evenly divided in the nation and that is great,” said DelBene. “We need more districts like this one.” The Reporter did not receive any response to multiple interview requests and phone calls to the Koster campaign. The campaign rally for DelBene also included the wife of former 1st Congressional District Rep. Jay Inslee, who vacated the seat to run for governor. Inslee won re-election in 2010 with 57 percent of the vote against challenger James Watkins. Because Inslee vacated the seat, 1st District voters will get to vote for DelBene or Koster twice during the general election on Nov. 6. The first is to fill the final few months of Inslee’s term and the second is to fill the seat for the next congressional term. This is the second time that both Koster and DelBene have run for Congress. Koster ran for the 2nd District seat in 2010 but lost to Rick Larsen 51.1-48.9 percent. DelBene ran against Reichert in 2010 but lost 52.1-47.9 percent.

receiving no funds from the charter. • An appointed board would have the final say about all working conditions for staff in the charter school. The board would not be bound by any state or district policies or rules. Keep in mind that Washington state is still underfunding education according to the Supreme Court ruling. Charter schools will put an even higher burden on meeting the required funding. Be an informed voter. Make sure you know what I-1240 would do before you mark your ballot.

Older residents are overburdened with high utility costs and levies In response to Bob Yoder’s comment in the Redmond Reporter on Oct. 19: I totally agree that longer-time residents on the hills in Redmond are overburdened with high utility costs and levies. Why do people on fixed incomes tolerate the highest stormwater and wastewater costs? There needs to be an adjustment made by the council, please! Also, the costs of new projects, affordable housing, increases in stormwater and wastewater need to be shared by all newcomers, not just long-time residents. Otherwise, we will all be searching for affordable housing soon outside of Redmond. If the council has a surplus budget, they should not ask for property-tax and wastewater increases from older residents over 60 years of age.

Lindsey: She said the biggest issue right now is the economy and job creation and their roles in education, explaining how her two older siblings have already left college, but still struggle with paying off their debt and how there are others who have a full education but cannot find work. “When I listen to a candidate’s policies, I want to hear how I will be helped,” she said. “I want to know that I won’t be a burden on my parents, that there’s aid out there for me.” Berndt: “I think the economy is coming back,” he said. “I’m afraid if a Republican gets elected, it may go backwards again.” He said he is “scared to death” that if Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is elected and cuts off the Chinese — as he said he will — the Chinese will want to collect the debt the United States owes them. “Financially, (the Chinese) can ruin us,” he said. Woolverton: “Jobs is a big one.” She added that she would also like to see people become more independent and selfreliant. What are your thoughts on the presidential race? She said she — like many young people — gets her news and information online, but things are very skewed and they don’t tell the whole story. Berndt: “All that money (spent on ads and campaigning) can be used to contribute to the country...I think it’s a waste of money,” he said. He said the problem with candidates accepting large donations from large groups or corporations is that if they are elected, those groups and corporations are going to want something in return. “They want payback.” Woolverton: “I want it over,” she said about the length of the campaign. “I’m totally tired of it.” She added that she feels the race has been so negative and
What are your thoughts on the presidential candidates? Pavlov: He said he thinks the candidates represent their respective parties well and do a good enough job to be electable, but he can’t say if this is the best for the country. “They are selected based on their electability,” he said. “(President Barack Obama) is photogenic and that is important.” Lindsey: She said she considers herself a moderate and agrees with policies put forth by both candidates. However, she said there are many websites that lean heavily toward one party or the other, which can skew people’s views. “I feel like there’s so much bias,” she said. “There’s so much fog.” Berndt: “I think Obama pulled our butt out of the (economic) hole,” he said. “Romney brought up a lot of stuff that he can’t back.” Woolverton: “I love Romney,” she said. “I just feel he’s been given a bad rap.” She said she believes Romney can turn the country around — though, not overnight — and put the country “back on track” and preserve the environment. She said she believes Obama means well but his ideas of taking money from the rich to give to the poor is what is dividing the country.
What are some qualities you think Washington’s governor should have? Pavlov: He said the governor should be able to represent the people and protect their interests. Lindsey: She said with how divided Washington is, “a fairly moderate standpoint is crucial... you need to represent everyone.” Berndt: “They’ve got to improve our schools because what we’re producing in our schools is how our country’s going to go,” he said. “If we’re producing a bunch of dummies, that’s how our country’s going to go, downhill.” Woolverton: “The governor should (have) leadership,” she said, adding that they should be able to work with “both sides of the aisle” and not be so gridlocked with their decisions. “It’s almost like a marriage. You compromise,” she said. What are your thoughts on Referendum 74 (a measure that would make same-sex marriage legal in Washington)? Pavlov: “I support equality of marriage and I support equal rights,” he said. However, he said he doesn’t believe it should be within the government’s ability to involve itself in a private matter. “These are private choices by private citizens.” Lindsey: “I’m fairly moderate on the issue,” she said. “I’m in favor of marriage for all.” She added that she thinks this should be
decided on a state level, not the federal government. Berndt: He said he thinks the institution of marriage should be kept as it is. “(Same-sex couples) can have all the rights,” he said. “(But) I don’t think we should have to give up our institution.” Woolverton: “I just can’t validate it,” she said. “Yet, I have it in my own family...I just feel it confuses children.” How important is it for young people to vote? Pavlov: “I think it’s very important because politics...it affects everyone in the country,” he said. He added that campaigns are targeted toward those who vote. Young people don’t vote because they are not targeted and are not targeted because they don’t vote. “It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy.” Lindsey: “I think it’s crucial,” she said. “I think the lack of participation is disappointing... Is it just going to go downhill from here?” She said many in her generation think politicians don’t care about them, which is not true. “Government impacts us more than we realize,” she said. Berndt: “Very important, I mean, it’s their country,” he said, adding that young people are just as responsible in the country’s future as senior citizens are. Woolverton: “Probably more so than anybody,” she said, adding that young people are the next generation to come.

The City of Redmond has an opening on the Human Services Commission for anyone who lives or works within the city limits. The city is looking for a candidate interested in a broad spectrum of human service issues including basic services, health care, counseling, domestic violence and family support. The commission’s role is to advise the mayor and council on general human services issues and to make specific funding recommendations as part of the city’s budget process every two years. Desirable qualities of a commissioner include a strong interest in the issues, a willingness to learn and a passion for working to strengthen the city’s effectiveness in addressing these issues. The seven-member commission currently meets the second Monday and fourth Tuesday of each month from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the council conference room at Redmond City Hall. The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. on Nov. 2. Redmond Eye Doctors fulfills its vision to open at new location
public Safety
Public safety consists of 24 percent of the total budget, with a total dollar amount of $139.56 million — threequarters of which is employee salary, benefits and compensation. This priority funds a number of departments including police and fire, as well as planning. Redmond Police Chief Ron Gibson said the city pros-
Montecillo said the new 3,400-square-foot space is three times bigger than their previous 1,200-square-foot space, which is located about a block south of the new building on Northeast 85th Street. With this additional space, she said she and Gouin will now
ecutor and public defender’s offices also fall under the safety priority — as does animal care, control and licensing. Gibson said one of the things their budget covers in the Redmond Police Department (RPD) is equipment, which includes the department’s fleet of vehicles. He said police cars are typically replaced once they reach 100,000 miles. City of Redmond Finance Director Mike Bailey said there are some cities that have not been able to do this and stay current on replacing city vehicles due to budget cuts. Gibson said two new positions have been added to the upcoming biennium’s public safety budget. Both of these positions address emergency management in the city. One position is focused on educat-
ing and preparing citizens for emergency situations. The other position’s focus is internal and how to keep the city government up and running during a disaster.
Community building
Community building consists of 5 percent of Redmond’s total budget, with a total dollar amount of $29.05 million. Redmond Parks and Recreation Director Craig Larsen said this priority includes citywide events such as Redmond Lights, Derby Days and Eggstravaganza. A large part of community building is the programs and classes offered at the Redmond Senior Center, Old Schoolhouse Community Center and Old Fire House Teen Center. In addition, Larsen said the
city also offers programs in a number of local schools. “We’re all over the city,” he said. Larsen said taking the programs to schools is a recent development and the move has been a “huge hit” because there are some teens who do not have the means of transportation to get to the teen center. The city has also worked with outside organizations to bring a variety of events and activities for citizens to enjoy such as the annual Ananda Mela festival in the summer and the three-part performance by Lucia Neare’s Theatrical Wonders. “We’re way past a tradition parks and recreation (department),” Larsen said.
Business manager Melanie Limtiaco agreed. She said they don’t want the office to feel like a clinic. They want people to feel welcome while receiving high-quality care. This focus on customer service shows not just in staff behavior and attitude, but in the new office’s design, as well, which includes a large front lobby with couches to relax on and large windows to let in plenty of natural light. Limtiaco said the new office’s design has been Montecillo’s vision from the beginning and never changed. “She stuck to it,” Limtiaco said.

What is the role of a State Auditor? State Auditor must be fair and even-handed and have the respect of all parties to make government run more efficiently. Here’s what newspapers around the state have to say about perpetual candidate James Watkins: Watkins is guilty of “a series of mudslinging distortions” and his “mean-spirited tactics raise concerns.” “More alarming, though, is the lack of fairness and disregard for context displayed in Watkins’ statements toward his opponent.” --- Seattle Times, October 14, 2012 We would “send Watkins to the penalty box.” “While Watkins says he wants a clean election, he’s the one throwing the mud.” ---Tri-City Herald, October 8, 2012 Audits “must be fair” but Watkins is a “tea party Republican” who must “bottle up the bile.” ---Spokesman Review, October 26, 2012
Before the invention of toothpaste in its modern form, the ancients formulated their own versions from ingredients such as crushed eggshells and powdered pumice. It was not until the 1890s that Colgate introduced the first tube of toothpaste. By the 1950s, enamel-strengthening fluoride was added to toothpaste as an effective decay-preventive element. Today, whitening toothpastes are slightly more abrasive than regular toothpastes, which, along with ingredients like peroxide, help them more effectively remove stains. In any case, the primary purpose behind tooth-brushing is to remove plaque, which coats teeth on a daily basis. Unless this pale yellow biofilm is removed, it will continue to build up and harden, and acid produced by the colonized bacteria will attack tooth enamel. Did you know that the wavy layer of toothpaste that sits atop toothbrush bristles is known as a “nurdle?” It makes good sense to start preventive measures against dental disease as soon as possible. Although Critchlow’s job is to fit people for glasses, she is cross trained to be able to pitch in and help in other areas — just as most of the staff in the office is. This allows the practice to run more efficiently. Critchlow, who commutes from Snohomish to work, added that Redmond Eye Doctors is also a place people feel good about working there. “It’s like family and that’s what we want (for) our patients,” she said. “To be comfortable.”

It may have taken half a decade, but Redmond Eye Doctors is finally in its new downtown location at 8630 164th Ave. N.E., Suite 100. The move was a five-year process that began shortly after owner Rania Montecillo bought the practice in 2007 from former owner Jeffery Forrey, who had retired that year. “And then we grew and so we decided we needed to expand,” Montecillo said about what prompted the move. She said Redmond Eye Doctors, which has been in business for about 25 years, has grown about 20 percent since she bought it and they now see about 3,000 patients. Before buying the practice from Forrey, Montecillo was already working at the

Montecillo said this will offer patients more hours and flexibility to see their doctor, adding that they plan to bring in more doctors eventually. In addition to more doctor availability, the new space will allow Redmond Eye Doctors to update and expand in the technology arena, as well, because they now have the space to bring in the latest equipment. The practice has also doubled its optical space, giving patients a wider selection of frames to choose from — including large and petite frames and brands ranging from J. FROM HARTMAN TO CHILDREN’S
From left to right, Redmond High cross-country runners Mekenna Mossman, Maggie Harger, Mari Fester, Nandita Gilroy, Megan LeGresley, Kelsey Dunn, Lila Rice, Kate Wagner, Claira Young and Mandy Rusch celebrate placing fourth at the 4A district meet last Saturday at Lakewood High to qualify for state tomorrow at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. It will be the 12th consecutive state appearance for a Mustang girls team. Courtesy of Diana Wagner kenna had her first surgery at around 2 a.m. Monday morning. Because the flesheating bacteria was so severe, she had a total of 18 surgeries with four teams of surgeons (general, infectious disease, plastic and orthopedics), received 400 stitches and spent 22 nights in the hospital. During the surgeries, she lost half her blood volume, which is in the process of replenishing itself, Kristen said. Mekenna recalls the eerie scenario of watching her wound progress from a small red dot the first night to seeing redness spreading up her leg while at Children’s. Kristen noted that the surgeons used the analogy
of a forest fire to describe the bacteria. “The infection just absolutely comes alive in the tissue and you have to contain the borders. You have to go in, and the only way to do that is to cut the tissue and lay it open. You have to take big enough cuts around the border and take enough tissue, not be so conservative, so that way you can just keep going back and killing the fire,” Kristen said while shaking her head. She added that the antibiotics Mekenna received on Aug. 19 helped slow down the bacteria’s advancement up her leg. Initially, surgeons kept getting behind the infection,
RECOVERY, RUNNING AGAIN
There was a point during Mekenna’s stay at Children’s when one of her surgeons told her that he could remove her leg to stop the infection from spreading. Even then, she still believed that she was going to be up and running again soon. Mekenna had Oct. 12 marked on her calendar as the date one of her surgeons said she could run again.

whole situation and running in the JV Kingco race,” said Redmond High School cross-country coach Denis Villeneuve. “It was a very symbolic run and she overcame great odds to be able to do it. She is coming to state with us and I hope she will be an inspiration to the other girls. “Mekenna is an outstanding runner, student and person. One of the finest I have had the privilege of working with over the past 30 years,” he added. It was one of the hardest things she’s done, Mekenna said of running at Kingco, but it was also an amazing feeling to be participating once again in the sport she loves. When she completed her run, she sat down by a tree to rest and Kristen rushed over to give her daughter a hug. Together, they cried. “I couldn’t handle the finish,” said Kristen, whose husband, Mike, was on a business trip but Skyped her and watched the finish on her iPhone. “It’s a good thing I had another mom that came up and stood beside me, because when she crossed the finish line, I just broke down and I just sobbed.” Last year, Mekenna competed on the varsity team, which finished third at state. On Saturday, she’ll travel with the team to state again to Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. She won’t run in the meet, but she’ll cheer the team on from the sidelines. Mekenna says she’ll be back on varsity next season. And soon, Mekenna and Kristen should be running together, as well. They’ve run two half marathons together and Kristen has run 15 marathons, including the Boston event three times. Kristen’s had injuries that have kept her from running, but now she’s inspired to get going again. “Now my injuries are nothing,” she said while glancing at Mekenna. “She’s made my life better. I love running more — I do.”

She kept that date firmly entrenched in her mind — the cross-country runner wanted badly to be participating in a 4A Kingco race with her teammates. She giggles when she recalls her first night at Children’s and what she said to someone before the first of her 18 surgeries: “I told them I wanted to be at practice that night when I was there at 2 a.m. I said practice is at 2 p.m. today, I need to be there.” It took awhile for Mekenna to return to Redmond High School. She missed most of the first month of school, went part time for two weeks afterward and was back full time at the two-month mark. Kristen said Mekenna kept up on her schoolwork without the aid of a tutor. Following her surgeries, Mekenna used a walker and crutches to get around, and that’s when Kristen realized, “It’s just a different life, and you just don’t understand until you live it. It’s not what people at Redmond High School are living. I wish that everybody could see that there’s so much more to be thankful for.” All the while, Mekenna hounded her physical therapist about when she could return to running. It wasn’t Oct. 12, but on Oct. 18 — exactly two months after she was injured — she ran the 5K junior-varsity race at the 4A Kingco championships at Lincoln Park in West Seattle. It wasn’t a full-strength run, but Mekenna achieved her goal of making it back on the course. Mekenna’s Mustang teammates — who visited her and brought her gifts in the hospital and texted her about their running success — cheered loudly for their friend who’s not back to normal yet, but is making long strides to get there. (Mekenna has a numbness in her leg and has many follow-up appointments with her surgeons on the horizon, Kristen said.) “I am very proud of her for battling through this

At about 11 a.m. on Aug. 18, Mekenna joined some of her cross-country teammates for their last unofficial run before the start of the season. They know the Hartman Park trail well and have run it many times since it’s their home course, but it’s a mystery to Mekenna what she tripped on and then fell on to cause her injury. Thinking quickly, one of Mekenna’s fellow female runners wrapped her shirt around the bleeding wound and some of the male runners carried her back to their car. Over the course of two days, Mekenna visited two local urgent-care facilities and received nine stitches and strong antibiotics, but she was in great pain, the wound was infected and she was transferred by ambulance to Seattle Children’s Hospital for further examination. They arrived at Children’s on Sunday evening, and Me-
Mekenna said, but one day they went a foot ahead of it and stopped it at her hip. If the infection would have reached her abdomen and spread to her organs, it could have caused loss of limb or life, the Mossmans said. “Most cases of this that you read about, when they have this many surgeries, they lose a limb or they die. Just like her surgeon said, ‘You defy the odds,’” said Kristen, who praised the Children’s surgeons for their work. “We didn’t know if we’d ever see her run again,” Kristen added. “It was hard — very hard. It’s been emotional. We were spending every ounce of energy trying to get her well.” Mekenna provided a positive outlook on the situation from start to finish: “I kept on telling her, ‘I’m fine mom, I’m not gonna die, I’m gonna be just fine,’” she said.

White Gold
Digging British Columbia’s legendary motherlode.
Here’s how it happens: you sink into a turn and a swirl of crystals envelopes you. A curtain of cold smoke hangs in the air as you link several more explosions before pausing for a well-deserved breath. As the cloud dissipates and sound drifts off like a wind dying in the tree-tops, a weight is lifted from your life. Maybe you don’t feel it right away because the void is filled by what you see: mountains on every horizon— rugged peaks, hanging glaciers, and welcoming bowls hemmed by gentle evergreen skirts. Above you, snow-ghosts picket a ridgeline, alabaster sentinels marching into a cerulean sky. Below you is a vast expanse of unbroken white. Snow of such elemental purity it defies description. In other places it’s called champagne powder, but here, following the mining traditions of the many British Columbia towns it blankets, it’s known as White Gold—because finding it brings a fortune in fun. You’ll know that after your first run. It might be the best skiing you’ve done in a lifetime of great skiing or just a spectacular introduction to wild and free and ridiculously good. And, as you slide back onto an immaculately groomed run to head back to the
lodge, you’ll wonder this: if this is just another winter day in B.C., what’s an exceptional one? Perhaps it’s time you found out. The scope and variety of B.C.’s ski areas is staggering. Whether your choice is located in the spectacular Coast, funky Interior or jagged Rockies, the variability in resort size and ambiance, the amount and diversity of groomed and offpiste terrain, and the consistency of quality snow that ranges from 10-15 metres (30-50 feet) each winter, you’ll know you’ve struck paydirt. Like Europe, B.C.’s vast spaces and convoluted ranges mean you can stay at a world class resort or an undiscovered gem just around the corner. You’ll also find friendly people, modern lifts, lodges ranging from rustic chic to ultramodern, and fabulous, award-winning food. Best of all, getting there is simple. Vancouver & Kelowna international airports act as gateways to B.C.—you can be skiing the same day you leave home. And if the snow happens to break around your knees as you dig into that first turn on your vacation, well, you’ll know. You just struck White Gold. SKI IT TO BELIEVE IT.com

Jesse Leuenberger and Gabe Rongve scored three goals each in Bear Creek’s 2B/1B district playoff wins over Grace Academy (4-0) and Shoreline Christian (4-0). In Wednesday’s Grace Academy victory, Rongve led off the scoring in the third minute on a penalty kick, Sajan Nauriyal scored in the 27th minute and Rongve and Leuenberger tallied in the 44th and 47th minutes, respectively. Against Shoreline Christian on Monday, Luke Blankenbeckler scored the Grizzlies’ first goal five minutes in, Leuenberger scored in the 30th and 33rd minutes and Rongve scored in the 73rd minute. Goalkeeper Michael Worley had a pair of shutouts for Bear Creek (15-1-1 overall).

Overlake’s Erik Risa and Dylan Reynolds qualified for this Saturday’s 1A state cross-country championships by finishing 20th and 21st, respectively, at last Saturday’s tri-district meet at American Lake Golf Course in Lakewood. Risa finished the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 23.8 seconds, while Reynolds notched a mark of 17 minutes, 28.0 seconds. The Owls took sixth place in the team standings, one spot away from going
to state. Twenty-one teams participated in the meet. State will be at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. Overlake went undefeated this year in regularseason league meets and took home the first-place trophy at the 1A Emerald City League Championships on Oct. 19 at Lincoln Park in West Seattle. This season’s standouts were senior Risa (twotime state qualifier), junior Reynolds, freshman Omar Aldahleh, senior Connor Buhaly and sophomore Cole Tsang.

your child to bed so that he/she will have enough sleep so be loving but firm. • Put some thought into finding your children’s ideal bedtime. Notice when they are starting to slow down and get physically tired. That is the time they should be going to sleep so complete their bedtime routine and get them into bed before that time so set a fixed bedtime and stick to it. If you wait beyond that time, children tend to get a second wind. At that point they will be come more difficult to handle and they will have a harder time falling asleep. So keep consistent playtimes, mealtimes and nap times. • If your child still naps but stays up late as a result, it may be time to eliminate napping. Experiment with weaning your child from naps and instead make a much earlier bedtime to allow sleep to be more consolidated and likely therefore more rejuvenating for your child.
• Give your child some “heads up” time to put away toys and get ready mentally for bedtime. • A warm bath is a good way to wind down after a lively day. • A special toothbrush and toothpaste could be part of the routine. • Try to keep the bedroom at a comfortable temperature with a dim nightlight if it helps. In the summertime, try to block out bright daylight. Blackout shades work well. • Use the bed only for sleeping, not for playing or watching TV. • Limit food and drink before bedtime, but at bedtime provide a sip of water so that your child doesn’t get out of bed to ask for one. • Allow your child to choose which pajamas to wear and which stuffed animal to take to bed. Some children have a favorite blanket that is definitely part of the routine. • Do not crowd the bed
with so many soft toys that there is not enough room for your child. • Read a favorite story or recite a favorite poem. Quietly go over the highlights of the day and then mention what will be happening tomorrow. • Soft, gentle music or a “Sound Soother” that emits white noise, waves, rustling leaves, etc. can help block out distracting noise. Stick to the same music or songs every night for preschoolers. • Tuck your child into bed snugly for a sense of security, give a kiss, say goodnight and close the door (or leave it slightly ajar if the house is quiet) and leave.

A child who does not get enough sleep may have behavior problems, attention problems, be more likely to hurt him/ herself and just not be doing as well as expected. Here are some tips that should help make bedtime easier: • Make a calm, happy ritual of going to bed and getting up in the morning and keep bedtimes consistent. • Make bedtime a special time with a predictable, calming routine. Consistent routines and getting enough sleep can make a tremendous difference to your child’s day. The recommended amounts of sleep per 24 hours are 11-13 hours for 3-5-year-olds and 10-11 hours for 5-12-year-olds. If, when your child goes to bed, he/she falls asleep easily, wakes up easily and is not tired during the day, then he/she is probably getting enough sleep. The best way to tell
if your child is getting enough sleep is to see how he/she acts during the day. Take a moment to notice if: • Your child falls asleep in the car almost every time you drive; • You have to wake your child up most mornings; • Your child seems overtired, cranky, irritable, aggressive, over emotional, hyperactive or has trouble thinking during the day; • On some nights, your child is tired much earlier than his/her usual bedtime. If your child falls into this pattern, then he/ she might not be getting enough sleep. Sleep-deprived children may have more trouble

Parents keep a watchful eye on baby safety lists — beating out everything from strollers to childproofing locks to toys. Baby monitors can buy you peace of mind by transmitting sound and — in the case of video models — images for those times when you must step away from the crib. But be forewarned: There are all sorts of models out there, and experts say the biggest challenge is finding one that works with minimal interference from other nearby electronic products.

One way to skirt that problem is to look for that rare monitor that uses Digital Enhanced Cordless Technology, or DECT, like VTech’s new Safe&Sound Digital Audio Monitor DM221 (www. babymonitors.vtech.com). If there’s one thing that new or expecting parents can take comfort in, it’s this: Your greatest fears are shared by others just like you. Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Your baby falling or choking. All topped the list of parents’ safety concerns cited in a new survey conducted by the research firm Toluna, Inc. “Parents today know that keeping kids safe involves round-the-clock diligence,” says Stacy DeBroff, founder and CEO of Mom Central (www.momcentral.com), an online resource that provides moms with household and
parenting solutions. In fact, according to the findings — and don’t be surprised if you recognize yourself here — a whopping 71 percent of respondents labeled themselves as one of the following: • “Protective.” Parents who’ll “stop at nothing to ensure the safety and well-being” of their offspring. Child-proofing is as second-nature to them as investing is to Warren Buffett. • “Close Supervisors.” While not as relentless as the aforementioned category, these parents admit they “hover” and take regular precautions. No surprise, then, that the same survey ranked baby monitors as the top non-clothing item on parents’ must-buy

for the future. There is something to be gained by helping children become capable people. We can do this by believing and having faith that all children, regardless of their appearance or background, are truly great people with great potential. There are so many benefits from nurturing them as they grow to become full-bodied people. What is most important in children’s development is not stuffing as much cognitive information as possible into their brains, but helping them develop a very different set of non-cognitive

What is the most important gift we can give our children? According to the book “How Children Succeed” by Paul Tough, it is the gift of grit, curiosity and the hidden power of character that helps kids succeed… And it can be taught. I have been a parent and educator for 30 years, this
has always been my belief system, too. It nurtures my passion and gives me purpose to work with children and parents every day. Being a parent takes on many dimensions. On the face of it, parenthood is a huge investment of time, energy and emotion. I believe the moment your child is born you will begin preparing them to leave you. What kind of character traits do you hope to instill in your children? It is so important to have a vision of long-term goals for all children. They are the joy of the present and our hope
skills of character building. These skills include being a problem solver, having persistence, self-control, curiosity, conscientiousness, grit (or resilience) and self confidence. When children learn these skills, it allows them to build a moral compass and integrity by being kind, respectful, empathetic and grateful. We instill these characteristics by teaching children how to think, not what to think. By doing this, children can then develop a sense of positive power, thus allowing them to believe: “I like myself. I can think for myself. And there is no problem so great that it can’t be solved.” When adults strive to be continual learners and seekers of knowledge, we

Larson empowers women one post at a time Redmond resident launched her popular blog, No Makeup Required, in 2010 Redmond resident Tracy Larson was born to write. Beginning when she was 8, Larson found herself constantly keeping notes of her thoughts. Her dream of writing manifested into her blog, No Makeup Required, “a digital haven of wit and wisdom for real women,” as her tagline states. As the founder and writer of No Makeup Required, Larson doesn’t just love to write. Her passion for empowering and inspiring women has driven her to use her writing for a purpose. Her goal is to make women feel better after leaving her blog; to feel less alone in their trials and triumphs. Larson’s love of writing translated into her blog after reaching a moment of inspiration. One of her friends was struggling with the death of a child, while another was adapting to becoming a new mom; two women at the same time, on opposite sides of the spectrum. Larson saw the strength of these women, and made a decision. “In that moment I realized there’s a lot of real
life going on between women that needs to be written. I thought, I need to start this, I’m not waiting anymore,” said Larson. Since 2010, No Makeup Required has been ranked in the top five parenting blogs for the Kindle, in competition with the blog of a Washington Post columnist, among others. Larson’s blog has clearly drawn an audience. Although it’s a key demographic, the site isn’t just for parents. Larson makes the point that when you’re a mom, you’re also a woman. Women are sisters, aunts, daughters, friends; Larson reaches many identities other than solely those experiencing motherhood. It’s a women’s blog, with a slice of mom in it. “When you’re a mother, sometimes you’re focused so much on being a mother that other parts of your life get lost in the shuffle. We are more than just moms,” said Larson. To reflect this, Larson made other adjustments and decided to re-design No Makeup Required after a year and a half of being online. She wanted to add more features,

The date of the re-launch this past spring had a purpose. May 20 was the anniversary of Amelia Earhart’s Transatlantic Flight, and Earhart is one of Larson’s favorite women in history, so she chose the significant day for her launch. Assistance League donates clothes to homeless shelter
Assistance League of the Eastside recently contributed new clothing to Friends of Youth’s (FOY) young adult homeless shelter in Redmond, the Landing. FOY officially celebrated the opening of the Landing, at the Together Center at 16225 N.E. 87th St. in Redmond on Oct. 10. The Landing is the only emergency young adult shelter on the Eastside and is a safe place where homeless young adults are offered a hot dinner, shower, laundry facilities, a safe place to sleep and the opportunity to begin the process of moving toward stable housing.

real quality Larson has worked hard to maintain. Catching Curveballs, Wisdom Wednesdays, Who is She, Conversations with Men and Conversations Between Girlfriends; all six contribute to setting No Makeup Required apart. They reflect Larson’s belief that women and moms can learn from each other, from other generations and from women of the past. The features play into Larson’s goal of looking at life differently than typical blogs. Instead of always writing about how frustrating life is, she strives to remind women that time is going fast and they should try to enjoy their lives.
Assistance League collaborates with other local agencies to help in the short term to fill specific unmet needs in the community in a timely, responsive and flexible way through the Assistance League Outreach program. Through this program, Assistance League and FOY have collaborated on several projects in the past few years: Milk was supplied to the Landing so the young adults could have milk with their cereal in the morning and new, sturdy backpacks were donated for Landing guests to store their things. Other recent Assistance League Outreach projects have included funding one week of healthy food for Pantry Packs, who supply takehome weekend food for children who might

As a busy woman herself, Larson lives by her words. When asked about balancing being a mom, a wife and working, Larson’s answer is simple: Balance is a myth. Sometimes the dishes get left in the sink overnight, the dog has an accident on the carpet or the kids need something brought to school; life happens. When life happens, priorities come into play. “I know I’d rather spend time with my kids than work in my garden. I can fix the garden when they’re gone, right now I’m enjoying them,” said Larson. In November, No Makeup Required plans to help LifeWire supply cell phones to domestic violence victims to use for calling for help in life-threatening situations, or as a means of contacting support as they move through being a survivor. Larson believes every woman should feel connected and supported. Through the participation of No Makeup Required in a cell-phone drive, Larson hopes to make a difference. Dorothy (Eldridge), Gilroy
Dorothy (Eldridge), Gilroy, age 82 - a 12 year resident of Redmond; died October 25, 2012 in the Critical Care Unit of a Seattle hospital after apparently successful aortic valve replacement surgery. She was an Iowa farm girl, the valedictorian of her high school class; an elementary school teacher, and a wife and mother. She was also a medical librarian who managed three small special libraries affiliated with the University of Cincinnati. She was the “local mother” to two daughters in law (one from India, one from Argentina). She was the grandmother of three granddaughters and one grandson. She volunteered in the libraries of their elementary schools, and in the Friends of the Redmond Library. She left three brothers, two sisters, a husband of 60 years, two sons, two daughters in law, and four grandkids – to cope with her unexpected death. Two memorial services are being planned. One at Emerald Heights on November 17th; the other at St. Jude Church on November 18th. 698074
