After several years of hard work, a group of determined community members have founded the nonprofit East Pierce Fire and Rescue Foundation. East Pierce Fire and Rescue provides a multitude of services to the communities it serves, but as a tax-based entity, its resources are susceptible to depletion. The foundation provides funding to bridge East Pierce’s financial gaps. It currently focuses on three initiatives, one of which is a pilot program called Sentimental Journeys. Sentimental Journeys is a collaborative effort between the foundation, East Pierce and Good Samaritan Home

Health & Hospice to provide terminally ill patients with the chance to embark on a journey of their choice. The program has facilitated three journeys since it began in January. Most patients have simple dreams that seem impossible because of the need to constantly access medical equipment and medications, according to Teresa McCallion, program director and foundation president. East Pierce provides a medic unit for transportation and the foundation reimburses the cost. The units are staffed by offduty firefighter paramedics and firefighter EMTs. Firefighters aren’t typically versed in palliative care, but those who participate in Sentimental Journeys receive special training to assist hospice patients. Destinations may include sporting events, a loved one’s wedding, church, or

even to see the wildflowers in bloom on Mount Rainier, McCallion said. For example, a Bonney Lake woman desired one last lunch with her family at their favorite restaurant in Gig Harbor. Family members are encouraged to attend and are given pictures to commemorate the experience. The presence of trained personnel provides emotional support by easing any fears they have regarding a sick loved one venturing into the world, McCallion said. Sentimental Journeys is a pilot program inspired by a similar project in Colorado, the only other of its kind, according to McCallion.

As the city grows more homes are being built, which means more children and the need for more schools. The Bonney Lake City Council approved ordinance No. 1478 at the council meeting on Feb. 25. This ordinance is a school impact fee for the Sumner School District, which will go into effect about April 2, according to Bonney Lake City Administrator Don Morrison said.

The Sumner Spartans girls and boys basketball teams played the final game of the season over the weekend. The season came to an end after each lost in regionals.

Girls The girls played the Lake Washington Kangaroos Friday at Puyallup High School. The Spartans fought hard but it wasn’t enough to advance Sumner to the state tournament. The final score was 51-44. For the first half, Sumner managed to keep up with Lake Washington and on a three-pointer by freshman Joy Mahnken

Panther swim halted, Spartans advance to finals By Theresa De Lay Staff Writer

Bonney Lake The Bonney Lake Panthers boys swim team competed at the state preliminaries Friday, Feb. 21 but did not advance to the final championship meet. The 200 medley relay finished 21st place overall, with a season record time of 1 minute, 51.55 seconds. The relay team included Cody Miller, Josh Weaver, Ryan Engledow and Skylar Livingston. Engledow also finished in 24th place for the butterf ly and diver Scott Jackson finished in 21st place, missing the first cut for finals. Coach Jay Paulson said the boys swam well at their first state meet and even

though the team will lose a few seniors this year, he is excited to see the younger swimmers improve next season. “I’m very happy with the performance of our boys. The level of competition at the state meet is very high,” he said. “We lose some seniors this year, but still have a very young core of swimmers that I look forward to working with the next couple years.”

Sumner The Sumner Spartans went all the way at the state meet and took 21st place overall. Coach Jerry Turner gave credit to Paulson for his collaborative coaching efforts with the divers this year. Diver David Kakuk missed first place by .15

points, coming in at second. Bryce Corrigan placed sixth. “These two divers have had an amazing career here at Sumner. They’ve both overcome a lot to find a true niche in diving and in the great pool culture we have at SHS. Both have the talent to compete at the collegiate level and we are excited to hear where they end up,” Turner said. The 200 freestyle relay came in at 19th place with members Kakuk, senior Hunter Molen, Cameron Retzlaff and senior Devin Drobny. Drobny also earned 21st place in the 100 freestyle and tied for 17th place in the 50 freestyle. Molen led Drobney, Retzlaff and Stephen Bone to 18th place in the 400 freestyle relay.

Sumner senior commits to play shortstop east of the mountains Sarah Wehmann Staff Writer

Another high school senior showed their commitment to play at the next level. Sumner senior Brandon Walsh signed his letter of intent to play shortstop at Big Bend Community College in Moses Lake. Walsh has always played baseball, he said. He also played tennis for five years. He chose baseball because it is the sport, he said, he takes the most serious. “I’ve always enjoyed playing baseball more than any other sport,” Walsh said. “I take baseball more serious than tennis because I just played (tennis) for fun. I wasn’t trying to make it anywhere (with) tennis, unlike baseball.” Regardless, Walsh did qualify for state in tennis the last three years. Wa l sh ’s pa rent s ,

Russell and Susan, said he has loved baseball for as long as they can remember. “Even before he could walk, he loved to watch baseball and the Mariners on TV,” his parents wrote in an email. Walsh will start at Big Bend in the fall after graduating from high school. He chose Big Bend because he likes the campus and enjoys Moses Lake, he said. Moses Lake has a lot to offer outside of playing baseball, he added. “I’ve also heard many good things about the coach and it just seems like the best fit for me,” he said. “I like how it’s a smaller school so you’ll know most of the people there.” After graduating from Big Bend, Walsh said he plans to transfer to Centra l Washing ton University and continue his baseball career. The Spartans season starts with an away game

against Steilacoom on Friday, March 21. Looking ahead to his senior season, Walsh said, “I look forward to having the best season of baseball and a state championship.” He also looks forward to more challenges on the field and meeting new people while at Big Bend, he said. His parents said they “are very excited for him to purse his dreams of going to college and play baseball.” They added that they hope “he can follow his dreams as far he can.” Af ter he f inishes school, Walsh said he can see himself continuing to play. “My ultimate dream is to play baseball in the Major Leagues,” he said.

I spent a lot of money rescuing that cat, but I did the right thing and my stress level has dropped significantly. The last thing on my list is the piano no one has played for two years. Craigslist hasn’t worked for that, but now my neighbor wants it. Another one down! Anyone else? Funny that the people living with me are so quiet these days.

a logistical nightmare. Plus the drama of it all was stressing me out; I’m the one home alone with them all day. I didn’t want to just drop her off at the pound and none of my friends could take her, because it was obvious she needed to be an only cat. So I listed her on Craigslist, where I could interview people for the right, forever home for her. I found a lovely family with a 14-year-old son who knew everything about cats because he used

I have been purging my life lately. I came to a point where the feng shui of the house wasn’t working anymore. Okay, I don’t know what feng shui is, but it sounded better than “I need to relieve myself of a lot of guilt.” It’s just plain old, life-sucking, weighing-heavily-on-mymind guilt. Let’s start with our 8-year-old lab. She deserved better than us. She deserved a family who would exercise her and enjoy her exuberant personality. I listed her with Seattle Purebred Rescue and after several months and many interviews, I found her a better home. She lives by a lake now. I think I did well; guilt diminished. A couple weeks ago, I was cold-called by a tree company soliciting work. “As a matter of fact,” I said, “I have a cherry tree in my back yard that needs to be cut down and some branches from the neighbor’s trees that needed to be trimmed back.” We also need to rebuild the shed the tree was hanging over, so it was a convenient, well-timed phone call. The tree was gasping its last breath as the original owners of our house put a tire around the base of the tree. By the time we moved in 22 years ago, the tree was too big to pull the tire off. We tried to cut it off, but the steel belt of the tire was too tough to cut through. The tire was choking the life out of the tree, not to mention the huge branch that was dying a slow, painful death. A week after that call, the tree is down, the branches trimmed back, just a few trunk rounds to remind me of the last tree of my daughters’ childhood backyard. Another item off my mind. Next on the list was the cat we rescued five months ago. I thought it

would be a nobrainer to introduce another cat into our home. We have a nineyear old cat that has been on the other end of the spectrum; she’s been the cat we introduced into our home when another cat already lived with us. It started out typically, lots of growling and hissing, but once I put them together in the back of the house, they seemed to be figuring out how to get along. Then it all went bad. Apparently, our rescue cat decided that since she wasn’t going outside anymore, every-

schools FROM 1 “I appreciated all the discussion by council around these fees and coming up with a solution for multi-family,” Mayor Neil Johnson said. “Since this fee is not a city fee but a fee based on the school districts capital facilities plan, it is important we adopt these fees so that the school

district can collect them which insures our schools have the funds necessary for their capital projects.” The idea, Morrison said, is that new development should help pay for additional facilities needed in the school district. The fee that was adopted at the meeting is set for $3,215 for every new home built and $415 for each new apartment unit that is

built, he said. “The school impact fee offsets a portion of the cost of new schools so the existing residents don’t have to pay so much for the additional schools needed to serve the new residential growth,” Morrison said. This is an increase of $210 for a new home and $415 for an apartment unit. Morrison said the

addition of the fee for apartment units is because those who build apartment complexes are renting to people who have children. He added, the rate is lower for those in apartments because studies show that the average number of school age children who live in apartment complexes are lower than the number of children who live in

single family homes. “We are hoping that the city of Sumner will follow ours and Pierce County’s lead in adopting these updated fees,” Johnson said. Contact Bonney Lake Sumner CourierHerald Reporter Sarah Wehmann by email, swehmann@ courierherald.com or by phone, 360-8252555 ext. 5060.

Never right, even when I am

My plan with this week’s column was to write about something brainy, like free speech. You know that First Amendment thing politicians and community cranberries throw around like a dayglow Frisbee. Once I started writing, my brain began to hurt and images of buttermilk popsicles began dancing in my head. Here is the rub. No one really likes free speech, unless it’s their unfiltered gossip. That is why Dennis Box we have a First Editor Amendment (that apparently no one reads if they can possibly resist). Free speech means someone has the right to annoy, irritate and infuriate someone else with political speech … whatever that is … I think … kinda. My daughter, Katy, exercises her free speech on me all the time. I never knew I was such a dumbwad until she learned to free speech me when she was 2. Now I get free speeched all the time. My best attempts at suppression just seem to get me in deeper trouble. That may be the problem with daughters going to college and getting all smarty. A week ago or so, Katy made me buy a new smarty-

Governor puts stop to death penalty in state Jay Inslee endorsed the death penalty for his entire political career. But once the Democrat became governor and got his finger on the switch, he realized he couldn’t push it. He pronounced Tuesday that no death-row inmate would be executed on his watch. “This is a hard decision given what this means to everybody in our state,” he said. “I’m at peace with it. I’m comfortable that this is the right decision.” He did not commute the sentences of the nine inmates now on death row; he’s given them a reprieve during his time in office and a future governor still could authorize their execution. And Inslee didn’t propose erasing the death penalty law voters tried to put in place and lawmakers eventually did 33 years ago. He’s left that task to others. Still, will Washington ever conduct an execution again? Maybe not. With its long winning streak in gubernatorial races, Democratic Party leaders are confident Inslee can capture a second term in 2016

The Petri Dish Jerry Cornfield Contributor

when the death penalty will certainly be a campaign issue. If this happens, executions would be on hold until 2020. Any Democratic candidate looking to succeed Inslee at that point would be hard-pressed to publicly reject the approach of the party’s reigning incumbent. Turns out one prominent Democrat who might consider running already knows he doesn’t want to do executions either. Attorney General Bob Ferguson said Tuesday he agreed with the governor’s rationale for pushing the pause button on executing death row inmates by lethal injection or hanging. He declined to elaborate Tuesday.

But his opinions on the death penalty aren’t a secret. They came into sharp focus in the 2012 campaign for attorney general when Ferguson made clear he opposed the law but would uphold the state’s right to impose capital punishment. He implied in a March 2012 statement to Washington State Wire it included conducting executions in some cases. “I have long been a supporter of the men and women who risk their lives to protect our communities, and should a tragedy occur on my watch where an officer is killed in the line of duty, I will use every legal tool available under law, including capital punishment as appropriate.” In that campaign, opponents questioned that resolve by citing comments he made to a student law journal in 1993 after he worked on a case for the Arizona Capital Representation Project. His efforts as a researcher in the appeals case for a cop-killer on death row resulted in the inmate gaining legal representation.

(Note: I got nothing but abuse for the color of my phone from Mr. Scott Gray, publisher with apparent hair and also known as the person who can’t tell Pepsi from Coke.) Yesterday while I was writing this column I had to take a picture with my new smartypants phone and send it to someone. I hit every button thing I could find and could not figure out where the dippy device hid the photo. I finally caved out of desperation and called Katy to find out where my phone from the evil region put the photo. It was cleverly hidden under photos. What sort of logic is

Wednesday, March 5, 2014 • The BONNEY LAKE Courier-Herald • Page 7 that? I got a lot of free speech from Katy for that one. After being thoroughly annoyed by my phone, I decided to do something I was good at – cooking. I made some popcorn. While it was popping on the stove, I became distracted with my hellish device looking at some recipe apps, and burned my popcorn. (Fortunately I have discovered a cure for burnt popcorn. Mix it with buttermilk and hot sauce, and I didn’t find an app for that one.) Once I cleared the smoke from the kitchen, I went back to searching for apps. Every app I found either tried to tell me where I was, which I thought I knew, or where I was going, which I don’t want to know.

I just started downloading everything I could find. I don’t know what all these stupid apps I downloaded are really supposed to do, beside force me to call Katy and get yelled at when I can’t figure out whatever I am supposed to be doing … I think. A couple of years ago I wrote a column about goofy app talk and a young woman on a bus sent me a message from her fancy-smanchy phone with every app on earth yelling at me, exercising her darn free speech, telling me what a dolt I am. What I need is an app to tell me what apps are really for, and how to suppress free speech of daughters and young women on buses yelling at me when they are right. That darn free speech.

SCHOOL DISTRICT VISIT US ONLINE: SUMNERSD.ORG

SUPERINTENDENT MESSAGE Thank you for your strong support of Sumner School District through the passage of the Maintenance and Operation and Technology Levies. I have to admit, levy season had me feeling a bit anxious. As many know, my educational career has been in Oregon where voters don’t have the option to support schools through voting “yes” on a levy, so working on this project was new territory for me. In my heart, I was convinced of the full support of our communities, yet I knew the outcome of the two propositions were pivotal for our students and schools. Now, with the election behind us, it is wonderful to see how voters reaffirmed their commitment to students. The passage of the two levies allows us to continue to provide excellent instruction, every day, in every classroom, for every student for the upcoming 2015-18 school years. Thank you for your fantastic support! My heart is full of gratitude and I promise to be responsible and thoughtful with every dollar we spend.

Speaking of “excellence,” I had the pleasure of attending our District Science Technology Engineering, and Math Fair! The 5th annual District Art Show was also held in conjunction with the STEM fair this year. I was very impressed as I viewed incredible art, robotics, applied math, drama, technology and science projects displayed throughout Sumner Middle School. The STEM and Art Fair were an opportunity for students to showcase their talent, learning, and abilities. Our students are indeed talented and creative. They have the opportunity every day to sharpen and refine their skills at school. Parents and community members packed Sumner Middle School as they once again championed students through active engagement and celebration at the Fair. Sumner School District appreciates occasions to celebrate and support Bonney Lake and Sumner communities. We love to join with you to make this a fantastic place to raise a child. It is our pleasure to serve you and your children with excellence.

“SERVE BIG” - 21ST ANNUAL COMMUNITY SUMMIT Join with local leaders, youth, and organizations at the Sumner/Bonney Lake Communities For Families Coalition’s 21st Annual Community Summit and become informed, inspired and involved! Issues will be discussed impacting the health and well being of our local children and families.

This event is free and open to the first 300 registrants; pre-registration is required. Register online or call the STARR Project at (253) 891-6066. REGISTER FOR KINDERGARTEN Kindergarten registration is now underway! All children enrolling for kindergarten for the coming school year must be five years old by August 31, prior to the start of the school year. Early learning is a top priority in the Sumner School District. As such, the District is excited to offer free full-time kindergarten programs at all elementary schools for the 2014-15 school year. Beginning in the 2014-15 school year, the District will no longer offer a part-time (red or blue) kindergarten program. Research shows early learning is an integral part of student success. Superintendent, Dr. Sara Johnson notes, “Kindergarten is an opportunity to develop and strengthen foundational skills necessary for success in school and lifelong learning.” Full-time kindergarten students attend school every day and have the same school calendar as students in grades 1-5. Students enrolled in full-time kindergarten receive extra instruction time to learn basic skills for first grade. All children enrolling in kindergarten will participate in a screening process held later in the spring. Families should contact their neighborhood school for registration information beginning February 18, 2014, or download a packet from the District Web site. Completed registration forms should be returned to the school. PAID ADVERTISEMENT.

Equal Opportunity: The Sumner School District complies with all applicable federal and state rules and regulations and does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, national origin, families with children, sex, marital status, sexual orientation, age, honorably discharged veteran or military status, or the presence of any sensory, mental, or physical disability or the use of a trained dog guide or service animal by a person with a disability. This holds true for all district employment opportunities. Inquiries regarding compliance and/or grievance procedures should be directed to the school district’s Equal Opportunity Officer and/or Section 504/ADA coordinator, telephone 253 891-6000.

A GREAT PLACE TO LEARN!

MARCH 2014

FOR EVERY STUDENT, EVERY DAY, IN EVERY CLASSROOM BONNEY LAKE HIGH SCHOOL DRAMA PRESENTS:

BEAUTY & THE BEAST

This classic musical tells the story of a prince who is transformed into a hideous beast as punishment for his cruel and selfish ways, and an adventurous young woman named Belle whom he imprisons in his castle. In order to become human again, the Beast must earn Belle’s love before it’s too late. The original Broadway production of the show opened in 1994 and ran until 2007, becoming Broadway’s eighth longest-running production in history.

2014 DISTRICT ART SHOW The 5th Annual Show celebrated the arts in Sumner and Bonney Lake schools with pieces of student work in various media including watercolor, oil, charcoal, colored pencil, mixed media, and ceramics on exhibit. This year the show included digital photographs by middle and high school students. For a full listing of STEM Fair and District Art Show winners visit the Sumner School District Web site.

The curtain goes up at the Performing Arts Center at 7:00 p.m. on March 7 and 8. Matinee performance will be held at 2:00 p.m. on March 8 and 9. The Performing Arts Center is located at 1707 Main Street in Sumner. Tickets are $12 adults and $8 for children, students and senior citizens. Tickets will be sold at Bonney Lake High School leading up to the performance dates. Box office opens one hour before the show. The performance is under the direction of drama teacher Brenda Williams and music director Amy Fuller.

BHS Drama & Music is donating 10% of the ticket proceeds to the Sumner/Bonney Lake Family Center to support needy children in our communities.

YOUTH HEART SCREENING The District seeks medical volunteers for an upcoming youth heart screening. The Nick of Time Foundation in partnership with the University of Washington Medical Center has selected Bonney Lake High School to host an on-site heart screening event for adolescents and young adults ages 14-24 on March 28, 2014. Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of sudden death in young people and is typically the result of undiagnosed structural or electrical heart disease. The goals of the Nick of Time screening program are: •

To detect hidden heart conditions with the potential for sudden death in the young.

To reduce sudden cardiac death through early detection and appropriate medical interventions, activity modification.

To raise awareness and educate schools and communities about sudden cardiac arrest, warning symptoms, and the value of heart screening.

The number of screening appointments available is contingent upon the amount of medical volunteers (doctors, nurses and technicians) that can volunteer the day of the event. Please contact the District Communications Office at (253) 891-6087 if you would like to assist us with this great opportunity to provide youth heart screenings for our community.

SPRING ASSESSMENT UPDATE Third through eighth grade students in the Sumner School District will participate in field-testing the new assessments developed by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) this Spring 2014. Sumner is among about 20 percent of districts participating in 26 states to be chosen by the Consortium for this opportunity. This means our students in grades 3 through 8 will get a head start on Washington State’s requirement of full implementation in the 2014-15 school year. Students in grades 3 through 8 will not take the math, reading and writing portion of the Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) assessment this Spring. The Smarter Balanced approach includes a number of differences from most state assessments today. These assessments will be administered online and will go beyond multiple choice questions to include performance tasks that allow students to demonstrate research, writing, and analytical skills. In addition to a year-end test, teachers will be able to administer interim assessments throughout the school year to monitor student progress and make adjustments to instruction. Accommodations for students with disabilities and English language learners will be built into the system so that the progress of students can be accurately measured. An online reporting system will provide clear, easy-to-understand data on student achievement and growth. These reports will present parents, teachers, principals, and other local and state leaders with information they can use to help students make even greater progress. For more information on the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium visit the OSPI Web site.

Lettuce plant the seeds of cool-season crops Early spring is cold and wet, but many plants may thrive

and don’t use the leftover seeds from last year like my penny-pinching father. Yet all his peas sprout and we plant at the same time and live nearby. I am very frustrated! T.R., Olympia I have two guesses about your peaplanting failures. Either your soil drains more slowly and you are planting too early (the peas stay too wet and rot) or you have hungry mice or crows that help themselves to your crop before it even sprouts. Try this: Scatter the pea seeds onto a damp dish cloth and wrap it up. Leave the peas indoors for a few days in the damp cloth and then plant outdoors after they have sprouted. Pre-sprouting peas will keep them from rotting in cold soil. Then cover the area with light netting to keep out the crows and place a mouse trap in the row under a bucket or pot

A.

The beginning of March is a good time to plant seeds of cool season crops like peas, sweet peas and lettuce. It is also time to buy hellebores in glorious bloom and prune roses and ornamental grasses if you have not done so already. Pruning earlyflowering shrubs like forsythia, f lowering plum and cherry can produce the benefit of fresh flowers for the house. Just add the cut stems from the budded branches to a vase of warm water and watch how easy it is to fool Mother Nature. Do you know what it is? L.M., Enumclaw Yes, the checkered lily or Fritillaria meleagris is one of the few spring-f lowering bulbs that will thrive in damp soil or even in meadows that get flooded by spring rains. This makes it a great early-spring bloomer for damp sites where other bulbs would rot. The markings on the petals really are extraordinary so remember to cut a few blooms to bring indoors and admire up close. Superint. Message March Music AAA Award Class. Employees Calendar Willy Wonka Draw Squad Help Our Students 3.14 Pi Day

MESSAGE FROM JANEL Thank you, voters! The White River School Board and I extend our deep appreciation to the entire White River community for showing such support for both the maintenance and operations and technology levies. This is the first time in history that the district has passed a technology levy! These White River kids are our kids and the community stepped up to make a difference in their education. Our teachers, administrators and support staff are thankful to each of you for showing confidence in us and in our ability to provide a high-quality education to our students. A high quality education extends beyond the classroom doors. Our winter sports teams have had a banner season! This is the first time since 1993 that the Hornet boys have won the district championship and the first time in school history that both teams have won the district title in the same season. Congratulations to Hornet wrestlers, Hannah Lewandowski for her 2nd place finish and to Trevor Kurtz for his 3rd place finish at the Mat Classic. Hornet athletes and coaches, you’ve made us proud! Recently I was struck by a quote from Seattle Seahawks coach, Pete Carroll. He stated, “To win the Seahawks had to be GREAT at the ordinary.” For the staff in the White River School District, being great at the ordinary starts with best practice in core instruction in the classroom every day. This starts with the gift of collaborative time for grade level and content teams to meet on Monday mornings during the late start. Teams of teachers and paraeducators are: •

Planning units of instruction

Engaging in a deep, rich study of the Common Core State Standards and clarifying the meaning of each standard

Focusing discussions on questions such as, “What would student work look like if this particular standard was met

Developing rubrics for high quality student work which naturally leads to the discussion of common scoring of student products, and ultimately discussions about grading and reporting of pupil progress.

Analyzing student learning data

Planning additional time, support and enrichment.

A NOTE OF THANKS TO VOTERS The Board of Directors, Staff and Students of White River School District wish to express our deep gratitude to the voters for supporting our schools with your YES vote. Draw Squad, a Spring Break Drawing Camp for young artists in grades 6 through 8 will be happening this year through the White River Community Activities Program. Taught by a professional artist, the camp will focus on drawing techniques in a fun and interactive environment. Participating young artists will receive a sketch pad and supplies. Fee for the week long camp is $90. Space is limited! Contact the Community Activities Program at 360 829-3366 for more information and to register.

CELEBRATING 3.14 PI DAY Some may figure it’s irrational to expect fourth and fifth graders to understand the concept of pi, still we do celebrate Pi Day in our classroom on March 14th! We love to investigate the relationship between the diameter and circumference of all the pies brought in to share. The young mathematicians measure the pies and organize the data we gather in different ways. We also graph our favorite kinds of pies-as a pie graph, of course. This allows us to practice our skills with fractions, decimals and percentages. The best part of Pi Day? Celebrating our new found understanding of the concept by eating the pies at the end of the day!
